View Full Version : Ok, well I'm scared...
So I had a meeting with 2 students on Saturday. Lovely girls, possibly smaller than Piggy too which looks hilarious when stood next to me. They are doing a degree in Media Production and as such have to produce a film for their final year. The film is going to be about.... me. They're going to stalk me for an afternoon with a camera and film me in "action". My god I'm scared. Its going to be a film about me standing there going "Um... er...." and falling off things. People only see the end result of a photo shoot with me. They don't see all the calamity and fear behind the scenes :D I honestly have no idea what I'm doing. I'm going to end up looking like a right tit. How interesting is it going to be watching a guy point a camera at something, stand still then walk off. Its going to be rubbish. I'm sure the girls would produce a great film if they had a great subject to shoot, but they only have me. Why did they chose me?! I'm honored n all, but just so scared. On my last studio photo shoot I told a model to imagine a cock ring with a large diamond in. Most people have a voice in their head saying "Nooooooooooo!" to things like that. I don't :D I wonder if I can hire a stunt double. As scared as I am I have to do it because if theres a slight chance of it being good it'll be good. Can't say no, can't let fear win. I can let fear terrorize me for the next 5 days though ;) OH GOD!:shocked::shocked::shocked:

You'll rock and have an awesome time :D
Cool :D Good luck, you'll be great :)
Cool :D I want to see the final film :D
Too bloody right - you'll do great. You've been interviewed and filmed before ('eighthundred') and you were fine then - certainly one hell of a lot braver than me anyway. I'd run a mile at the thought (cameras still scare me).

Oh god no :p Its just going to be me completely clueless on the streets of Liverpool to arty music. I suppose it'll capture the horror nicely :)

Narrate your own life :D

That was completely out the blue. This time I have a week of fear to enjoy before turning up and dying on 8mm film :D I hate having my photo taken, let alone god knows how much footage of video! Hahaha oh dear, just remembering the last time I was "filmed" I was easily distracted by nipples. "Oooh nipples." you hear me say.

Haha. I wonder if they'll have flashback sequences, like that time I... ;)

Is there a chance you can set up a proper shoot and have them film you doing that? If you can get into the frame of mind where there's enough going on for you to be focussed on the photography and forget the camera is there then it'll not only make you more relaxed but it'll also make for a better film.

There is that chance. Funny story really. They're also documenting a band who want to do a shoot with me. So it all might come together in one film. However, I can't stress enough how much I suck :D Shoot with naked girls, I tell them about cock rings and then go "Ummmmmmmm" :D
You could always ham it up a bit and throw a big creative tantrum just for comic effect :D

lol :D "I just can't work with this light, and you people are like pigeons covered in skittles. You have no talent! This is completely non-focalised and other made up words."
Woo! You're like, a celebrity and stuff ;D
You'll do great, cos you'll just be doing what you do normally, but with someone filming :p

I'd just say (easier said than done) relax and do your work, it's their job (not yours) to make the film "interesting". I'd call a flower or whatever pretty boring but some of your photos bring out an interesting side because that's what you do. They do the same (hopefully!) with film! So relax and it's not you're fault if they're crap.
Good luck. I'm sure it will be fine!

Yeah its weird. The classic line from BttF, "If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything" works well. Like if a client says go take street portraits I do, and do it well. For eighthundred I had to take 100 people's photos in 8 hours and did all by myself. I realised the other day that I've been casually doing street photos for 3 years. The other month I had to take pictures inside a shopping centre and had no problems doing that. Its weird. I think I need that pressure to force myself to get the shots. I have to know its really important I don't fail. Without it I can sit back and be a bit lazy about it. No *real* need to force myself. Which is just silly. But even more so is that I'm still quite scared of asking people for their pictures, or seeing something happening but being a bit too shy to take the photo. I don't know if that will ever go away. I'm working on a book about 2008, and I run my VDays website so I have plenty of legit reasons for what I'm doing. Its so silly. I know loads of people who say they couldn't do it, and they're generally more confident than me and I have done it many times so why is it always so hard? Makes no sense.
So yeah the docu scares me because I don't really want people to see that side of me, the side that fails. The great thing about photography is that you can go off on your own, take pictures and show the world the best of the day. You generally don't show them how you were too scared to do this n that :)

Haha drugs could be interesting ;) They're 20 somethings too.

Yeah thats a good point. But still, if I spend the afternoon standing around saying nothing and fiddling with the camera settings its hardly giving them good material to work with :) Shame I don't have a model I've worked with a lot to work with. Need to um work on that :)
Sounds like you need something to motivate you on the day then. If the shoot doesn't come off, is there anything going on that would seem like a good candidate?
As I'm sure you're very aware as a photographer yourself, it's common for people to be conscious of the camera and to deliberately act differently as a result. Do you have something you do to put people at ease? Can you apply that in reverse to help you put yourself at ease?

Hmm, not sure of anything happening on Saturday. Sunday is the 27th and Holocaust day. Still need to sort something for that. Generally the way I make feel at ease is to act a little silly, make jokes and have a laugh. I guess I'll be ok... maybe.. oh dear lord!
stay away from my office ;D
haha :p

It'll be a car crash in slow motion where a dragon turns up quickly followed by the plague, 15 angry lions and the dead from Titanic as zombies. Both the film, and the real ship.

So it's James Cameron's new film then?
:p
Yup, no pressure. Just filming me 3 times between now and May for a total of around 6hrs footage which will make a 20 minute movie. Oh and they'll be filming the exhibition too. So, alcohol addiction sounds like a fun hobby...
LOL Nooooooooooooo </vader>
Its out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XyV8Bv0FkY). Kitten you're safe. There's no footage of you chewing on a lollipop :D

That is brilliant Pete :) so pleased for you!
Handled being filmed far better than I'd have done. Kudos. :)
Cheers :) Initially a very scary project but on seeing the final video I'm really happy with it. Emma, the video girl, got 71% and its going to be run at a gallery on Tuesday in Cardiff. I'm on tv! ;)
God was this really OP'd in January? Where has this year gone...
Will watch the movie later pmc :)
Great little vid that Pete :D
Still find your work amazing....is a skill I'd love to have.
Awesome little vid pete :)
all good up until the end.
Chester > Liverpool :p
i had a dream about you last night, I was near your house and I stopped and waited for you to come back. A guy delivered some groceries and I took delivery and signed for them and there was a packet of biscuits sticking out of the top so I opened them and ate one. As I was eating it, a bloke walking a dog comes back and looks at me and says 'What are you doing?' I said, I'm waiting for Pete. Just then my phone rang and it was you and I said 'Hi, where are you, I'm at yours' and you said 'No you're not I can't see you' and then you said 'Are you at my new flat?' and I thought 'Ahh. I see the problem'.
Apologied for eating new owner's biscuits, patted the dog and carried on my way ;D
LOL how odd :D One of my neighbours does have a dog but I'm not sure he leaves biscuits on the doorstep for passers by :D
Awesome little vid pete :)
all good up until the end.

Haha :p It did occur to me that I probably should have chosen my words better there. Simple fact is that I've never really been hugely impressed by Chester. The cool architecture in the city centre has stupid shops in it ruining all your photos. Nice river n all but pales in comparison to the Liverpool skyline, especially when its full of ships as it will be later this year :D
