Well not quite.

Had an idea whilst washing up before. I am getting a bit bored of my food - I can cook "well" and all that side of things but what I have a problem with is going to the shops, seeing ingredients and putting them together with something I have no idea about. Sometimes I will buy things on a whim but perhaps not know what I should put them with or generally wander about the supermarket browsing just in case something jumps out.

My solution to this is to create a little group here on BD. I propose a £5 per person limit on spending (so if you are cooking for 2 you can spend a tenner, but it MUST scale to one person at under a fiver!).

Basically, if you "subscribe" to this what I will do is create a list and every fortnight the next person in the list will go out and create a list of ingredients and then we can all cook with those items and post up a recipe for what we did with them.

The rules will be a bit lax but I would say that the most important thing was that no significant portion of the dish came outside of the listed items.

Who is in?

OK, so we have people interested:

Sounds like a good idea, probably best every fortnight/month. I wouldn't take part myself due to being not so inventive with meals but i would love to see what other people come up with and maybe try the recipes for myself.

What the hell - can give it a go :) It would be good if it was at least fortnightly as then I can aim for when Mic is on nights - I don't mind experimenting on myself but feel guilty if an attempt at something goes wrong and he is left with beans on toast :O :p

This is a bloody genius idea. Almost to the point where I wonder why I didn't think of it first. :D

Righty, glad to see that a fair few people are interested in this!

I need to go shopping today as it happens so I will start? Might as well go in the order people signed up to the thread :)

I will post up the list a bit later on, and then what I have done with it :)

I would, but am a fussy ghet and my cooking is more of a convenience when I have the ingredients rather than planning :p

So I will post as and when I get round to cooking them, but I won't partake in the actual thing. Hope thats ok!

:D

Cool, so once we have a list, we basically have a fortnight to cook and post?

Just wanted to get the facts straight, you know me :)

Think each fortnight the "list maker" should start a thread with the list in the first post and then all pics etc can be posted in the one thread...yay?...nay?...

Tak

and no the "list maker" isn't related to the gatekeeper or keymaster :p

Yay! Good idea so we can update as and when.

I bloody hope not... that game gave me nightmares :(

(Basically above I was saying I didn't want to be a listmaker, but will post as and when I get round to cooking something :))

As its fortnightly then I see no harm in a new thread for each "round". There will be a new thread started by whoevers turn it is every fortnight, and yeah it would be beneficial to have the last one all done and dusted by then but its not going to be a hard and fast thing.

One thing I would suggest is that the primary ingredient (whatever it may be) is in the post title. So for example for my turn it might be:

"BDRSK - DRZ - Beef"

That way it will make looking back for things a bit easier in future.

I do want to stress that its NOT a competition, there is no winners and there is no prize :) Just so that there is no confusion re rounds and people joining in as and when - its all good :)

i agree, defniately no competitiveness, just good to get our creative cooking juices flowing and hopefully inspire other people too.

So if the main ingrediant is something someone can't deal with (like me and veal for instance) then they can sit out of the round.

And yeah I think a new thread per round is good.

For mine can I ask for no mushrooms in the goody bag? I'll cook and eat pretty much anything else but not mushrooms :)

I'd like to have a go at this. I won't be able to participate whilst I'm on the rig, obviously but I'd be keen to have a go when I'm home.

Shall we have a list of cupboard/fridge items or shall we just trust people to be sensible about what they use?

I am going with sensible :) It doesn't really matter if someone uses some butter or salt or oil in the cooking and not include it in the list, same goes for herbs and stuff. Things like wine and stuff might be borderline, it will be up to the person doing the buying. If they have it in then fair enough but if they are buying it specifically then perhaps not.

Right, im off to the shops as I have not long got in from a meeting!

Hmmm sounds fun, i will watch this on the sidelines for ideas, i generally make my meals by whatever is in the reduced section (for meat), work around that and try and make it different, it keeps me on my toes! But i always like something different. I'll try and think of something maybe in the future though...

i mean - if someone suggests 'beef' can i use what ever i'd usually substitute for beef?
sounds fun tho :)

I'd say so, It is also interesting to learn what we can substitute for meats.
