Booo hiss EGR problem

Tochi had an engine warning light come on yesterday :( So tonight I dangled upside down into the footwell with a paper clip to diagnose the fault. I got error code 12 which is a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

Hmm I wonder if it is just all stuck open or gunked up or if it needs replaced. I hope it's the former! Well if it's that of course. The code says that but I suppose it could indicate a few things.

Well I removed the EGR valve and it was carb'd up beyond belief. The valve was jammed shut. Good soak with carb cleaner and removed the gunk. Gave it another soak and then 'pop' it opened up. Removed all excess dirt and put it back in. Reset the ECU and took it out for a long drive. No more warning lights!!! yay \o/

Eighties-ish Saabs have a mechanical EGR system on some models, that works fine. They went over to an electronic version in the 90's and not long after offered a kit to remove it and blank off the holes cos it was rubbish ;D

/me runs out to the car, back in a moment..

I had a situation a short while ago where as I took my foot off the throttle and engine braking kicked in I'd get a quick blip of the engine cutting out and then restarting as it effectively jump started itself.

Turned out that one of the connectors on the EGR part of the loom was badly corroded and to quote the garage "none of the bloody pins are touching, mate". I had it replaced and all is now good and hunky-dory!
