View Full Version : Would you like some new fora?

It has been suggested that as we grow we might want some new forums added, so far photography and sport have been suggested. In the past I've been a bit concerned personally about speading ourselves a bit thin (ironic eh?) but judging by the success of Dym's food forum I'm no longer concerned.
So what would you like?

If newcomers are to be attracted in to the public section, they need something tempting. I think this is great idea..
I would like to see consoles seperated from PCs. :)

Not sure I agree with that myself. It's a nice (relatively) busy forum at the moment and I wouldn't want to lose that.
I think we certainly have enough photography nuts to warrant a sub forum :)
Bare bums forum :)

This thread is rude.
I approve.

Scarred for life, more like.
I'm going to sit on the fence on this one (medic - spike up the unmentionables - ow :o). I wouldn't have initiated such a request myself but I certainly wouldn't object to them and can see the benefits if the vote for removing the moat around this place goes according to plan.
I would have said yes to photography some time ago, but I dont think enough people here are that interested to warrant a whole seperate forum.
So no thank you :)
I remember asking for 'Sport' a while back. Voted for the smut though.

I don't think i like the idea of a smut forum really as far as i'm concerned it was only funny between friends. A smut forum would actually make me rethink my membership here.
As Dee said i don't think there is enough uptake for a photography forum just yet, maybe in the future we can add a sub-forum in audio/visual. :)
I do think a sport forum would be good though, as we have our gym bunnies and our football lovers we can lock them in there to let the unhealthy folk feel better ;)
Agree with my northern chum, no thanks to a smut forum and I think sports would be good for that that want it.
I agree with the others. I don't think theres a strong enough photography group here. Thats not to say there isn't any photographers or people looking to get into it. I don't think anyone's really posted anything here for a long time.

tbh I dont because there ISNT a photography forum. Since stopping OCUK, I've not been as photographic because I dont feel theres a place for me to really talk about it in the odd spare minute I have.
I think a photography forum, or at least one with some link to photography would help me (personally and selfishly). Somewhere I could be proud to show off one shot I thought went well or worked. Of course it wouldn't pretend to be a professional discussion place, but one for n00bs like myself I'd like.. :dunno:
^^^ Not since you introduced me to TP ;)
I'd never get myself into a dedicated website for photographers because quite frankly I dont think I'd be taken seriously and would feel I'm wasting peoples time with my sporadic and sub standard attempts. I'd much rather discuss them informally with a group of people who know who I am.

In the nicest possible way, you would actually fit in. I'm trying to be very careful with my words here :) TP is mostly filled with amatuer photographers posting everything from birds to bees to cars to flowers and such. Its a solid forum for a newbie to join and get advice on things. But I can understand that you would prefer to post here amongst friends.
If one is made I'm all for it. I felt that there wasn't enough people to really make use of it, at least posting photos here. I know there are people into photography here so I'd pimp out Talk Photography because of the like minded atmosphere.
Just to make a point clear though, I'm not currently active on TP so even though it may seem like I've been pimping it I'm not. It doesn't currently feel like my photo home right now. So if a photo forum was made here I would be supportive of it, if there's a big enough crowd who'll use it.
I'm with Pickers (and Kitten). While I know it was my own insecurities and not anything anyone else did (and certainly no insult to anyone here), I felt like I was getting shot down even on OcUK by those who spend hours (and thousands) on their 'habit'. As a result, I'd certainly not join anywhere like TP. I'll be honest and say I'm not even sure I'd post pictures here, but it's more likely than anywhere else.
I've come off the fence btw. My view is that there's no harm in trying new fora of whatever form the membership decides (within reason). If they don't work, it's a quick and easy task to move everything back and pretend it never happened. While I know it was only tongue-in-cheek, I would draw a line at frivolous stuff. Smut is one of those things that's great in small doses but soon wears out if overused.

I know what you mean there. Its often me doing the shooting, and not in the best possible way. So I can appreciate how posting a photo of something you like only to get some cocky muppet slating it can make you feel a bit meh :)

*Ahem* :) Good times!
Whats happened to me hey, i'm never on here anymore and i hardly feel like i'm participating its annoying, and its something i need to change...

You're just mean to people :p
I stopped posting on TP because it logged it me out one day and I forgot my password, never got back in the groove :(
It's done it again last week too, so i've not logged in for a while.
If a photography forum was opened here, I would certainly pop in, but I would honestly much rather go to TP. Its not full of professionals, its full of n00bs like me, its a brilliant place, and they dont shoot you down for posting crap pics :p
The first shots I ever posted there were some self portraits, I didnt think they were anything amazing, but some people really liked them. *shock horror*
Ive also had some very kind people help me out over there, someone touched up a photo of mine so I could get it blown up onto canvas, another only the other day sent me a training DVD cos he heard I had just bought a 400D.
Ive just entered my very first competition, and I am not expecting miracles, it made me try something new. I just doubt we will have the same sort of place here, sorry :(

Its not only that. I dont WANT to be part of a webforum dedicated to photography. photography is a small part of my life - far too small to try and frequent a second forum with the little spare time I have.
A small corner here would suit my needs and also provide the impetus for me to take more photos again. Its also a "safe" environment where if I say "dont offer advice, I'm just chuffed with this shot" for whatever reason, I can be sure people wont try and be "helpful" when its not wanted. If I joined TP and just posted a picture but didnt want any advice on technique or composition, then any comments (such as "good shot" or "rubbish") would be from 'randoms' who have no bearing on my life and - as such - would be hollow and meaningless.
I dont mean the above to sound as 'razor sharp' as it may come across, but I cant think of a way to better explain myself :p

Sorry Dee but I fail to see the difference between a photography forum here and there if that is your criteria. Most of us are all n00bs and are learning.
Ive just entered my very first competition, and I am not expecting miracles, it made me try something new. I just doubt we will have the same sort of place here, sorry :(
There is nothing to say we wouldn't have competitions here. I agree that we don't have the photography user base TP has but personally I think it would be an excellent addition and I would post alot in there too. I joined TP a while back and have made exactly 2 posts. 1 about mac FTP software, the other to enter the competition. Other than that I don't see myself posting much on there because I'm not confident enough with the shots I take. Even though we're friends here we'd give constructive criticism to each other and we'd happily take it. I'm looking forward to a photography forum where I can post my ideas and stupid stuff I've taken without fear of "spamming" the forum. I also understand if people want to look elsewhere for help and ideas if this forum doesn't cater for that area. My web browsing at work is restricted so I don't want to have to trawl through several forums I'd like most things in 1 place unless I need something people here can't answer then I'll look somewhere else.
At the end of the day this will give the users and potential users of BD more forums to post in which will grow so can only be a good thing.
<snip>
Theres a better way to explain myself! ;D;D
I just doubt we will have the same sort of place here, sorry :(
Me too, but then why does it have to be? Of course that's entirely up to us, the members, to make of it what we want.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not expecting anything we have here to be a replacement or competition for TP, but then I don't think that was the point anyway. What's the harm in having the forum? Those that want to take their photography seriously have both, those that don't, have here. If it doesn't get used, then the admins can use the 'big red button' on it.

I think we should amalgamate our posts, you put in stuff I forgot :o ;D
Basically, the member base at TP is sooo much bigger than the four or five people we have here, I think it would die out very quickly.
But hey, please prove me wrong

I'm sorry Dee but I just can't seem to get past your negativity with this. I would have thought you'd be the one championing it saying we should have it.
The cookery forum only had 4-5 contributors but now we have lots of people getting involved. I think the same would happen with the photography forum, there will be a little apprehension at the start but I'm sure things will build up speed.
Infact why don't we just close down the c&c section because OCUK's userbase is sooo much bigger than the few we have here.
I just spent ages typing, trying to get my views across, but I know it wont make the slightest bit of difference, so I wont bother.
Have the photography forum, but I wont contribute as much as I do over at TP. End of.

:dunno: I dont think anyones expecting people with more of an interest in photography (or sport for that matter) to post more on here than they do on a dedicated hobby website.
I can see there is little point in debating this point any further, I think its been taken a bit too seriously
I see BD as a 'pub' where I can talk about what interests me. In a pub I play pool for some fun, but if I were to be a serious pool enthusiast I'd probably join a pool club - wouldn't stop me going down the pub for a quick game now and again though ;).
I can certainly see both sides of things. TP has the member base and if you're wanting to have detailed critique from a variety of people you can. However, if you want to chat about photography with friends I can appreciate the level of comfort you get from here. I chat here about games and life stuff rather than OcUK because I'd prefer to discuss things with friends not randoms. As Kitten said, the food forum has been a surprise hit and who doesn't like pretty pictures?
who doesn't like pretty pictures of food?
fixed :p
Haha. Well we could just have 1 new forum. Photos of naked people running and playing volleyball. Covers all the bases there.
I must admit I don't see the problem either. I don't think anyone is going to go policing who contributes to which forum and how much they contribute. I'm sure (indeed I have no doubt at all) there are people here already who contribute more to other forums than they do here. That's absolutely fine with me, and long may they feel comfortable doing that. It would only be when people feel they have to contribute exclusively to one or the other that I would start to get uncomfortable.
500g? That's some serious medication there. :p ;D
A photo forum, for a forum full of mates....how can this ever NOT be worthwhile?! It's all a bit elitest isn't it, saying it's not going to be up to par for the 'serious' amateurs. I think there are probably far more people here who like photography than thought (me included as you know Dee, although because I don't talk about it morning noon and night it seems I don't come into that category)
I love photography and I love seeing peoples photos, a photography forum would be most excellent so yes please :D
Hey - everyone knows how snap-happy I get at meets even if 90% of them are ****e so a "supersnaps" forum would be cool :)
I would also like a sports forum just to keep all the footie talk in one place :p but also the gym talk could go in there too :)
Can't think of any other forums to suggest atm but I am willing to keep an open mind :)
I wouldn't say its elitist at all, at least that wasn't what I was trying to say initially. TP has everyone from people who can't take a photo in focus, to people who photograph their kids and pets, to people who make a living off it. I wouldn't have recommended it peeps if I felt it was a serious amateur forum. But anyway, yes to our own :)

So just because one person doesn't think there is any need for a forum that's it ? We shouldn't even try it ?
Rubbish !

Let's not start throwing rolleyes around at other members here. I don't think anyone has suggested it's not going to happen because of one dissenting voice. :)
PS - for the avoidance of doubt and in the hope the above remark doesn't cause upset I'm not suggesting that dissenting opinions should be ignored either, but as has (correctly) been pointed out, there were dissenters over the 'food for thought' forum too, and that worked out OK.

Nope Kitten, I was using it in the former sense. Besides, I know I'd pay for it sooner or later if I even thought of rolleyesing you. :D

Seems there is the uptake for a photography forum that a few people, me included, underestimated. If it floats then it floats, likewise if it sinks. May as well give it a shot. :)

Blimey...
I go to Chelmsford for a few days and all hell breaks loose....
Anyhoo, as the most successful instigator of a new forum then I have a few things to say...
I'm not going to vote here because I have no interest in any of the suggested fora.
BUT
I can see interest in all of the suggested (well other than the upskirt thing, I just rely on the lovely girls who are my friends here sending me piccies ;)) for decent reasons but I can't say if they'd have staying power or not.
A photography forum would be good for some people, but also bad as our userbase doesn't support the kind of advice people need to improve their skills... Personally I see it likely that it will just be filled with links to other forums where there are people who are objective and have a lot more knowledge than most people here (except Pete).
A sport forum isn't a bad idea and I find it likely I may get involved (but only due to the current six nations idiocy) but I'm not sure how much staying power it will have when most of the sports threads are just pointing out how badly certain teams have done...
As it stands then BD has plenty of different forums to keep our userbase happy. No matter how much it's opened up then there will still be the same core usergroup with maybe a few additions.
I'm not saying no to new groups, I'm just poking a stick at the camel of the forums and seeing how fast it trots :)
FYI
Food for thought ROCKS! :p

Well... I voted photography forum FTW! I should have probably voted for a sports forum (as an after thought I figured - YAY- no more footy threads in GD ;)) but I forgotted. Boo.
Although we may not have loooads of pros for photography there's enough interest and enough knowledge I think to chuck in ideas of how to do things! We don't have any professional chefs or nowt... yet we all chuck ideas at each other in the food one (rarely any linkies to Delia or Jamie O or fuddy forums are there ;))! So yeh, it'll hold I believe!
I can therefore post all my silly blurry pictures and people can photoshop them for me! YAAAAAAAAAY!
I iz happy.
Gonna go have some fud. Maybe a tub of pringles. Nom.
*wubs*
I like the idea of a photography and sports forum personally so have voted accordingly :)
I've noticed that with games related threads (the main thing I realllllllly pay attention to), there's often people posting that I never saw post much in (for example) ocuk's Games section. I reckon similar would happen for a Photography and Sports section. I know I'd definitely be much more likely to post in either of those two, than in the equivalent either on TP or some Sports forum.
I like everything in one place, call me lazy :p
Either way, what's the worst that can happen if we try eh? :D
Hopefully that all made sense, I'm tired :o
Makes sense to me. I'll possibly be one of those people. I use 'New Posts' 99.9% of the time and I often don't bother checking which forum I'm in unless I suspect it's something that needs special care, so if I see something I like the look of, chances are I'll read/post whichever forum it's in. :)

Thats how I read BD now as I have to be stealth at work and usually short of time :p
I would like a photography forum.. I guess it could serve a number of purposes, from people's opinions and help to just posting pics of family friends pets etc.
Also I think it would be a good place to put all the photoshop help threads as there have been a few and I know I have had a few in the past.
In hindsight I should have voted for the Sports one too, if only to get all that outta the way :p ;) :D
