View Full Version : Question for the ladies...
*watches thread flood with blokes*
Anyway, I have a few questions.
First, Flowers on Valentines to a girl you like but aren't seeing, yes or no?
If we continue on the basis of that being a yes, would you be upset to receive flower from Asda.com?
I ask because they do some rather nice looking bunches, at a fairly reasonable price compared to Interflora. As you've no doubt guessed, I can't really justify laying out loads on these so, hence looking at Asda (after SINC showed me it)
For example:
Interflora

vs
Asda
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/9959/sfa561gr1.jpg
Now, personally I think the Asda ones look nicer with the extra grasses in there etc. but i'm worried that them arriving in an Asda van, delivered by an Asda uniformed bloke, in a box that says Asda on it, might make me come across as a total cheapskate.
So basically, will Asda flowers make me look cheap and which bunch do you think would look nicer anyway?
Ta for your help :)

Personally i wouldn't care if it was a bunch from ASDA it would just be nice that someone cared enough to think of me, but that is just me personally can't speak for the others.
I like the look of the ASDA ones in that picture though bigger blooms which is nice and not the 'pressure' of giving someone red roses with them being pink.
Aye, I prefer pink roses but Interflora won't deliver pink ones on valentine's day :/

Well thats gay :/ not everyone wants red ones.
In all honesty i think if you believe she will appreciate it then you should do it.
Okey dokey, thanks for your opinion :)
For years I used a local florist who used to do some amazing stuff
When Cheryl moved workplace this ruined it and I was left with the internet places
I have used Tesco,Asda,Sainsburys.M+S,Next,Interose plus a few others and all have been acceptable , though I would say Next and M+S were the best
I normally order 12 Grand Prix roses for valentines but this year have gone a bit different and ordered a single rose dipped in 24kt gold from interrrose , hope its OK

Wow that is so lovely, she is a very lucky lady (lovely too). I'm sure she will love it, it is nice to have a change. Will it keep for long? :)
M&S wasn't somewhere i'd thought of actually...

they are dipped in zinc first and will last forever ( so they say )
have ordered it in 24ct gold but have the option for platinum for £20 more, the gold seems the way to go at the moment but as a long term display thing I am still thinking re Platinum
the price is not as much as I imagined, gold is £85 + post and platinum £105 + post
thanks for the lovely comment BTW :)

I much prefer platinum to gold as it captures light so nicely. I'm sure she wouldn't be adverse to some of each :p (built up over a few valentines days and anniversaries) It's such a beautiful idea to have an ever lasting rose. /end girly mushyness

thats what I was thinking, also so much stuff in the house is chrome/silver etc it may be a better idea
gold just has that immediate visual impact though
why do women always pick the more expensive option ;)

would be nice to gather a few opinions re Gold or Platinum as you are now making me think which way to go :)
It doesn't matter where they come from, as long as they're pretty. Tesco & M&S always have some absolutely lovely bunches, as do Next, Morissons, Asda etc. A woman who snubs you because of where you bought the flowers from needs a kick in the ass. And no boys, that doesn't mean that £2.99 carnations from a garage are acceptable.... £3.99 lillies from Tesco however.... I'm another girl who's not arsed about red roses... or really roses in general. I'd much rather have a beautiful mixed bunch :)
Hope it works out for you Divine! :)
P.S. Rotty what a fantastic idea! I'm always sad when I have to chuck a bunch of flowers away. That's something really special that she can keep forever :)

i *think* asda flowers are delivered by royal mail - so no worries about your man in a lime green uniform!
(and if she cares about that anyway - eurgh)

I've always thought that the impact of flowers and chocolates at times and on days other than Valentines Day was better, it just seems to me that if you have to be reminded by a commercial event than thats going to be recognised by the recipient but maybe I'm just a miserable old git.

I think you're right - we have boxes of flowers arrive at work for residents on their birthdays and its always royal mail or one of the delivery services. They all seem to be in similar type boxes too so there shouldn't be a worry over a lime green box instead :)
I'm not a huge rose fan - if someone wants to buy them for me, hey great, but its just a bit too "formal" a type flower (if you know what I mean).
I don't get flowers very often at all, not even on v day necessarily. Most of the time if I have flowers, I'll have got them for myself from the £5 section at tesco.
The first time I ever got flowers was before I was going out with Mic. He sent them to my work at the time (woolies) unfortunately I was home sick so a friend had to bring them round after her shift - not quite the result he was after :)

You're not miserable Matt - I may be a hopeful romantic but in a way I agree. If I only got flowers on v day then, tbh I'd probably get fed up with them. In Divines case, as he isn't actually seeing the girl yet then flowers could be good and vday gives him an excuse without him looking too soppy :)
I think they look lovely :)
I'd say it's the sentiment that counts rather than the price or where they came from, and I'd be extremely pleased to have them from anyone. :)
Go for it :D
Personally if I was bought flowers I wouldn't care where they came from or how they were delivered. I'd find it amusing if they came in as Asda van :D
I'm easily pleased though, my favourite flowers are daffodils anyway so they cost about a quid from a roadside place :p
Rotty, wow you're missis is a lucky lady, I hope she knows this :) I'd be over the moon if I got a rose dipped in anything :p (except poo!!) Given the choice though I'd go for the platinum as it will catch the light better imo.
There's not much nicer than a bunch of flowers arriving. Just to know someone was thinking of me enough to make the effort makes me tres happy!
Right then, cheers for all the opinions, was just a bit worried it might be the flower delivery equivalent of taking a girl to McDonalds for dinner :p
Though, I am wondering now after reading Matblack/Taks comments whether just a card might be better and do the flowers in a month or so, so there is less 'expectation' of them...
How about a card and something silly/box of chocs for v day and as you said, flowers in a month
yeah and she'll get the card and think...well he could have sent some flowers too, the tight git. ;D Really, it's down to the girl. If she's not happy with what you buy her and you make a decent effort trying, then she's not worth the trouble :)
Exactly :)

As said I wouldn't care where they'd been bought from, just that someone cared enough to buy them for me :)
And agreed with both Piggy and Tak too - although it's a little embarrassing, it's a really good proud kind of embarrassment! :o
I am in agreement with the ladies here, doesn't matter how much they cost or where they ar from as long as they are nice flowers. I tend to use local florists rather than anything online, however, if I need to send something to someone far away I use M&S or Next.
Personally roses don't do it for me. I prefer irises, lilies or a nice mixed bouquet of chrysanthemums, carnations etc. Thats all down to personal taste though. If she is lucky enough that anyone bought her flowers she should be happy enough with anything :)

I agree with Matt. Flowers sent on Valentine's day may well be sent with the correct intentions but they're still being sent because it's expected. I prefer the surprise attack, shows them you care without having to be prompted by some commercial scam.
You can still do romantic stuff on Valentine's day - have a romantic meal at home, run a rose scented bath for your loved one etc. and leave the flowers for when they may be more appreciated.
To show someone you're interested, it's a bit more difficult not to be lured into the spendfest - maybe you could make something or find some original means of expressing your feelings (without being too tacky).
Not having a girlfriend, I usually treat my Mam to the odd surprise bunch of flowers (always makes her cry and gets me millions of brownie points).
I use Flowers Direct, they use one of the local florists in Shetland to supply and deliver the flowers and have a very high quality standard. I ordered flowers once and got an e-mail the day they were supposed to be delivered saying that the florist didn't have blooms of a high enough standard to send that day and as an apology, they would send a bouquet of a higher value with a free box of choccies thrown in the following day. Can't fault the service.

Love you sending them to your mam Stan, that's lovely :D
One of the few people I can rely on for unconditional love - that deserves special treatment :)
I suppose a lot of it depends on the girl in question. If she's the type who likes the idea of VD (Kittens idea, not mine :p), then she probably would appreciate the gesture - and may well respond. If she's not, she might see it as a cynical attempt to get inside her knickers (worst case scenario).
As for the OP. I think the Asda ones would be absolutely fine. They look like nice enough flowers and if she likes them then you've found a girl who likes nice things as opposed to nice expensive things. If she thinks of you as a cheapskate for buying them from a supermarket then you've had a lucky escape from a life with a high maintenance, ungrateful bint.
I'd be happy with a bunch picked from the side of the road, me!
The kids' dad turned up once with a huge grin and a big bunch of daffs he'd scrumped from a local field! That was the only time he brought me flowers and I loved it!
Damn! If only I'd known ;)
I'd rather you just turned up on the doorstep to be honest, bugger the flowers!
Nothing says I love you like a bouquet of grass. Hand picked from the fields by that A road on the way.
:D - I was thinking about some dandelions in a jiffy bag tbh ;)
I'll wee the bed!
I'll wee the bed!
In that case you'll just need to get those rubber sheets of yours out ;) ;D
This time of year, the perfect bunch of flowers for me is daffs. I absolutely love them, and you can get 2 big bunches for £2 at most places. I buy them when I do a shop, as a "thank you for putting up with me" from Leon ;)
oh arse, was going to change the rose from a gold one to a platinum one but when I remembered it was too late
just ordered Cheryl a new car today so will probably be in the good books anyway :D
was thinking about getting it for delivery on valentines day but makes more sense to leave it a couple of weeks so it is on the 08 plate , she has never had a new car before and her current one has seeen better days
I am now officially skint :(

That's what being married is all about :p
Well after all your wonderfully helpful advice, I didn't get any in the end because neither of my debit cards would work anywhere. I suppose I ought to call the bank and find out why really but I can't be bothered at the moment.
Might grab some from a nearby florist if I have time between lectures later and drop them over to her house in person.

what she getting? what she getting?
as above, not very interesting but it's what Cheryl wanted, Astra 1.6sxi sports hatch in black
Leo, I'll have a Fiat500 please. An old one will do if you can't stretch to a new one ;)
I love the new one but know better than try and change a woman's mind ;D
Haha, M&S delivered those ones I apparently couldn't pay for and subsequently cancelled while I was at said ladies house for some lunch. I was more surprised than she was...

I really hope you didn't say "wtf, I cancelled those!" hahaha.
Well I did because I went and bought her some lillies instead (hence being there at lunchtime) and i'd already explained to her how annoyed i'd been at trying to order her some flowers and all my cards being broken... :p
Just thought I would drop a couple of pics of the gold rose **** knows what we are going to do with it now ;D

That is very cool, I agree with your thoughts on the platinum one :p
You need something to put it in standing up.
how about a thin vase with some pebbles in it or glass beads or something ?
will probably go for something like that, we also have to account for the probable impending arrival of 2 Kittys this summer so anything will need to be nailed down ;D
