View Full Version : Outer space is weird

This is the mess that is left when a star explodes. The Crab Nebula, the result of a supernova seen in 1054 AD, is filled with mysterious filaments. The filaments are not only tremendously complex, but appear to have less mass than expelled in the original supernova and a higher speed than expected from a free explosion. The above image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, is presented in three colors chosen for scientific interest. The Crab Nebula spans about 10 light-years. In the nebula's very center lies a pulsar: a neutron star as massive as the Sun but with only the size of a small town. The Crab Pulsar rotates about 30 times each second.
All space is weird, especially when gravity and space time get involved.
Nice picture though. Hubble has given us some of the most impressive pictrues I've ever seen. scale-wise.
I saw a photo of Uranus once.

You just couldn't help yourself, could you ;)
As for Hubble, there are loads more on this website in the original MAHOOSIVE resolutions.

You get used to it after a while.
I shall take a look tonight. The distances are just mind-blowing.

"The Universe is not only stranger than we imagine, but more strange than we can possibly imagine."
Thinking about space makes me feel really small and insignificant... :(

Nice quote. I was looking at some of the other images on the NASA site I linked to, at full resolution they are incredible (and very big!). It really brings home how small and insignificant our little planet really is, and how little we really know!

Damn, you stole my words and posted them quicker than I did!

So that makes you more insignificant than me?
So that makes you more insignificant than me?
Yes! :'(
pardon my ignorance - I know nothing about space and that sort of jazz. When it says that it is in 3 different colours for scientific interest, how many colours would actually be there in reality? Would be just be white?
*confused*
As with most of these images, if you were looking at that region of space with the naked eye you'd probably see nothing of interest. The image is rendered in false colour to show the distribution of various gases which also has the pleasant side effect of creating some funky looking images for people to be amazed by.

An invisible dot on an invisible dot?

ahhhhh, thank you :)
