View Full Version : BDRSC - Tak - Pork Slices
Hope no one minds me having a go :o
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Takhisis_uk/Cooking/BDRSC2%20-%20Streaky%20Slices/Picture002.jpg
Shopping list:
Bag of new potatoes - £1 - used half (well used all but thats only because I burnt the first half :o )
Pork slices - £1.67 - used half
Winter veg steam pack - £1.50 - used half
Very Lazy Garlic - £1.48 for the jar - used about 2 teaspoons worth
Chilli infused olive oil - £1.98 a bottle - used about a tablespoons worth
Hot paprika - £1.25 a jar - used 1/2 teaspoons worth
This is a nice simple lazy meal (always lazy meals when Mic is on nights)
First I chopped the new potatoes into quarters and put them into a frying pan with the chilli infused oil
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Takhisis_uk/Cooking/BDRSC2%20-%20Streaky%20Slices/Picture005.jpg
After they had started to brown I added the lazy garlic and the paprika
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Takhisis_uk/Cooking/BDRSC2%20-%20Streaky%20Slices/Picture006.jpg
The veggies got steamed and the pork sliced got grilled (forgot to photo this)
I drained off the potatoes and used some kitchen paper to pat off excess oil (trying to be healthy :p )
Then I served

Its nothing fancy or difficult :o Only thing I'd do differently next time is add a bit more paprika to the pots :)
Interesting :)
I'll have to see how my money situation is when I next go shopping :)

aww another one i can't have a go at!
weirdly - though you can get fake chicken, fake beef, fake turkey roasts, sausages, burgers etc etc etc i have never seen fake pork... (never had pork as a 'meat eater' tho - so i can't say i miss it!!)
your veg and potatoes look yummy tho ;)
your veg and potatoes look yummy tho ;)
Are you a full veggie or a semi veggie (still eat fish)? I have cooked for both kinds before :)
I'll try to think up something with "fake" meat next time - will be a good excuse to practice :)

i (we) don't eat anything that has died, or suffered in order to produce food
no meat, fish, gelatine, nothing refined with isinglass (so lots of beers and wines are out), no cheeses made with rennet, no animal fats, no whey... the list is endless!
*mental note - inviting G&S round for dinner could prove confusing* :o

What about substitute the pork for fried haloumi slices or a roasted courgette stuffed with feta? Your choice but I'm sure there is feta and haloumi out there made with veggie rennet.

But the veggie rennet thinks it's better than the real stuff, and therefore bullies it meaning the animals suffer :(

HAHAHAHAHA - wait, not that...
well tonight i'm doing a 'fake roast' so i'll post up some piccies :)
a couple of nice ideas there jonny - we substitute some pretty crazy things into our meals, but the better half is also a very fussy eater - which means loads of veggies / cheeses are out :(
with the 'not one i can try' comment, i meant that there is no direct substitute - i could cook a chicken curry, and have it look / taste like a chicken curry, a lasagne, a chilli, even bpigs in blankets - but pork is a toughie :)

my dad says that all the time! :D

What do you eat! That might be easier :D
Tak, cheater buying pre wrapped winter veggies!? Pah, could have saved have the price on *fresh* stuff and not have to pay for someone else to chop your carrots :p

Did you take pictures? I would like to see how it turned out. I like veggie meat substitutes and roast sounds really interesting. :)
I might be making this tonight.
'Tonight, tonight, tonight.....woahohhhh!'
I don't think I'll be doing this one. Phil wont eat the veggies so there's not much point.
(I also can't think what to do :/)

it's not really a BDRSC entry - just showing how to veggie roast! (sorry for the huuuge, crappy images)
roast - make sure (when cooking for veggies) that your product states that is is 'suitable for vegetarians' not just 'meat free' as they can still have nasty animal fats and such like in

look, in horror, at the monstrosity you are about to cook
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/notsuchagreatidea/Image009.jpg
cook, as instructed, in its condom, for 30mins, remove wrap, smother in garlic / onion/ oil and bung it back in the oven to absorb the flavours
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/notsuchagreatidea/Image0131.jpg
remove from oven, and leave to stand for about 5 mins before carving

serve!

Each to there own thats fine, but although i wouldn't mind trying it out every so often, i KNOW for a FACT i could not live without meat! Quite sad really i guess!
OK, gave this a go tonight and it turned out raaather delicious! I've been at the red so I don't know how well this is going to go...
First off I put the potatoes in boiling salted water and left them to simmer. While they were cooking I attacked the meat. I couldn't find streaky slices so went with tenderloin:
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8803/p1000454ym6.jpg
I sliced it into pieces around half an inch thick and as I couldn't get chili infused oil, mixed some regular olive oil with both lazy chilis and lazy garlic and let the meat marinade for about half an hour:
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/6650/p1000455as1.jpg
I chose carrot, cabbage and leek as my veg and got them chopped and out of the way so I could concentrate on the other bits:
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/2315/p1000459ty5.jpg
When the potatoes were almost done I transferred them to a tray of heated oil mixed with the hot paprika and basted them. Left them for twenty minutes on 190. Ten minutes in, I dropped the carrots in a pan of water, and heated a little oil in a wok and started pan-frying the meat:
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2844/p1000461wr5.jpg
Immediately after the meat was done I threw the cabbage and leek in the wok and used the juice to stir-fry it:
http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/2464/p1000463kc3.jpg
I stacked the meat in layers to make a kind of tower and threw the stir-fried veg over the top. Carrots and potatoes went on the side:
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/8281/p1000465wp6.jpg
I then quickly made up some Bisto (sue me!) and mixed in a little red wine:

Et voila!
Hurrah!
Looks good Chris :) I'm liking the table decorations too :p
I have asked for posts 24-29 (but not 25) be moved into a new thread titled "Vegetarianism - the debate" or something like that. I am hoping there will be an admin about soon to do this.
As long as people don't aim to just insult one another for their dietary choices, I think it could be an interesting thread.

I was just about to do the same. Sorry for derailing your thread :o
As for the food aspect. I love streaky pork but I usually just grill it and have it with boiled tatties and a tin of processed peas (I usually pour the fat from the pork over the tatties as it tastes yummy - I know, heart attack on a plate :o).
I think I could do something with those ingredients. Maybe parboil the tatties and fry them in the fat from the pork along with some onions, garlic and paprika and stir fry the veggies in the chili oil. I don't get back home for a couple of weeks but I'll give it a go then.
As there seems to be no more goes with this, does someone else want to sort out the next one?
I haven't done a shop yet! But as I said I will be one of the 'when I get around to it's :o
