I'm not a great fan of rowing but I do my 5 minutes before weight training as it does a great job on warming up the upper body muscles.

However since Christmas, I've been doing lots of cardio and lost nearly a stone in weight.

My FF gym are doing a promotion at the moment, 2km row as quick as you can. Anyway, yesterday, one off the young fitness instructors asked me if I'd like to have a go. I was reluctant at first but I changed my mind.

I had a good start at a 147/500 pace so I was clearly heading for a good run. I cleared 1km in just over 3 minutes and by this time I had a few people round me. The target was 6:59 set by another member who I believe is about 25. However I would have been happy with anything under 8 minutes.

I could hear the chaps in the background saying "He's going to to do it" and called the other instructors over. I relaxed the pace abit to around 1.51/500 before hitting the the last 500m when I blasted about 141/500 to finish at ....

7.07.. :)

So I'm second placed out of about 25.. At 40, I have to say I'm well proud of myself.

I have to say, it took my a while to recvover and i did feel a bit sick ... my stomach muscles went in convulsion which I've not ever felt before and my arse hurts!

That's bloody good, my best is around 8 minutes, and my mate who rowed for our university rowing club had a PB of about six and a half minutes. He was sick after that though!

For the record, your Steve Redgraves and Matthew Pincents do it in under six.

Bloody hell ! I have to ask, did you have that on setting 10?

Never really gone for it on the rower, I use it purely as a warm up machine. My average is about 4:30 for 1km. Standard 28-30 spm.

I take my time for 3km and just do it slowly so never tried, but I doubt I could get under 7mins. I'm around 8mins at the moment breaking into a moderate sweat. I'm really impressed Paul that is really impressive. My record for 1km is 3mins 22s but am completely shagged afterwards.

I might see if i can get a picture of the stats board which is on display.

Well done.

I was in the gym on friday getting my first proper bit of excercise in ages and did the 2k in 9 minutes something. I was wondering if that was an OK time but it looks like I have some work to do.
The early mornings have always put me off rowing on anything other than a machine.

I've given the bulking a rest for a bit. It was becoming to clear that my weights were suffering due to lack of fitness. So since Christmas, I've been doing more cardio than weights and loss some fat that has collected on the way. Eating correctly is a problem to combat metabolism and the weight loss has made me loss some mass. :( I feel quite tired at times but generally I feel much better. I think I might buy some Creatine to boost things a bit before i hit the next weight program. I'm not sure yet.

Thread resurrection

Been gradually giving it a bit more on the rower. Now at 1200m in 5 mins (max setting). I seem to be settling around 2min to 2:04 per 500. Which is a good improvement as I think I was around 2:15-2:20 per 500m.

I'm settling at around 30-31spm. One of these days when I don't have to do a full programme afterwards i'm going to go for it :D Still even now you do have to give it some

I should get down to the gym again. First time I used the rowing machine I set it too high and my tendons or something in my arms ached for a few days.

After that initial cockup I found it quite easy on 10. No idea what this 147/500 means though. :o

Make no mistake, rowing is brutal. The worst part will be your stomach muscles if you do too much. The above means 1min 47secs to do 500m. In other words bloody fast!

Ah right. I could do with a six pack so I might take up rowing again. :D
