I walked past a florist today and saw some potted plants that looked really nice, but i think my mum would just prefer a day off. Might get her some new jumpers, she likes jumpers.

Yes, or the alternative warm clothing definition ;)
I got her a home and garden type mag subscription last year, but thanks Paula, I might get her something from Peacocks as well :)
I've never understood Mother's Day. Why do people need to wait for Clinton Cards or WH Smiths to tell them to show some gratitude to their parents? Its exactly the same as Valentines Day. "Hmmm, looks like everyone else is taking this one day of the year as an opportunity to think about someone else for a change and do something romantic for my other half, or for someone who I think is special. Perhaps I'd better jump on the bandwagon, for fear of being outed as a non-believer and ostracised from society, destined to live out the rest of my days as a hermit."

Because my mum does a **** load for me and even though i tell her how great she is and sometimes buy her things for fun it is nice to have one extra special day. (imo) :)
Mothering Sunday wasn't invented by the card shops though....
Mothering Sunday in the UK is the equivalent of Mother's Day in other countries (http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/blog/2006/03/mothers-day-around-world_114321976441008984.html).
It has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent (http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/easter/lent.html) since at least the 16th century. For a long time, it has been a day for giving thanks for all the things our mothers do for us.
Mothering Sunday is always the fourth Sunday of Lent (http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/easter/lent.html).

Isn't it a Christian thing rather than something designed by a card company?? Something to do with the Mother Church?? /tries to remember the brainwashing at school...
Edit - oh, surprise surprise, we celebrated it first, and it's to do with Mother Earth and Nature. Nowt new there then :D
I've always celebrated it as it means a lot to my mum, and especially now we live far away from each other.

^^^ I agree, stop moaning Pyle, and sod off out of my happy thread :p;)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating some kind of ban on saying thanks to all the Mum's out there. Mine lets me live at home, that in itself is worthy of considerable gratitude.. I just don't get why we need to all go through the motions on a particular day. It becomes an exercise in sales and marketing, and for a lot of the high street stores Mothers Day is a just a bumper weekend where they can clear more stock and sell crap that otherwise they probably couldn't shift as fast.. By all means, people should make a big effort from time to time, I just don't see why the likes of the card and gift companies should dictate it for us.
Oh my god! I am not throwing her a fricking parade! I am getting a photo printed for her to say how much I love her! Was only looking for like minded ideas :(
See my edited post above. It's a Christian thing dating back to the 16th century.

Sorry, I did add a message to my first post that said I like your photo. I missed it out copying it from Word into the little box though... I spell check my posts, 'cos I am sad.

Lol we must have posted at the same time! However I then researched and realised it's a Pagan thing dating back to 'who knows when' :D
No doubt I'll now forget about this till the day before and panic buy some random thing for her along with a card. I'm useless at remembering stuff like birthdays and the like, so normally need someone to remind me.
Ought to add that I got my mum one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gina-B-Global-Cooks-Knife/dp/B000SU7U50/ref=pd_bbs_15?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1203702131&sr=8-15) and a copy of this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nigella-Express-Lawson/dp/0701181842/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203702219&sr=8-1), so I am guilty of the exact thing I am critical of..

Anyway, who says that just because we choose to do something nice on Mother's Day means that we don't do it at other times during the year? Hmmm? I know I do! My Mum is absolutely fantastic, and this is just another excuse for me to tell her so.
I'll cooking the parents (& probably brother) a lovely slap-up 3 course meal and giving her a big bunch of flowers. I know that's what she'll appreciate over anything else. Making her a card too :)
That's in addition to rebuilding her computer and making her an apron from the leftover of the fabric she used on the kitchen curtains... which I was doing for her anyway because I'm an awesome daughter :p

I do a little something extra for my mum on this occasion.
We see my Parents infrequently due to distances involved etc, so when we do get together we always do special things and maximise our time together.

I might see if she would like to go to the cinema actually, i can't think of the last time she went (can also have chinese :))

Exactly :D
I'll often come in with a DVD or something as a treat, but it's nice to give her one extra special day. She suffers a lot with me :p
I've bought her some Hotel Chocolat chocolates in Exeter and i'm planning to buy her something else, just not sure what yet. Probably either a DVD or a DS game. She deserves more really, she's been a bit of a rock to me in past months.
I haven't spoken to my mother in a couple of years now and I've not seen her in double that so I think same as normal will cover it.
I'll probably go and buy the card Mic gives to his mum though as he always forget :p

I got Phils mums at the same time I got mine cos he never bothers ;)
Oooooh Pagan... might have known it'd originate from there :)
Seeing as most things do, it gets a little tedious ;)

I'll probably do the same as I've done the last couple of years and send her a bottle of malt. She loves her whisky but as she and my Dad are pensioners, they can't afford the really good stuff so, on special occasions, I usually treat them to something yummy. They usually save me a glass for the next time I get up to Shetland (probably May).
Flowers, I send at random intervals, when she least expects them and make her cry :D (in a good way).

I read that as you'll be cooking your parents and brother, couldn't see how she would enjoy that ;D

How about something like a spa day? Went down well for my mum for her birthday last year, we spoke to a friend of hers and she bought herself one too so Mummsy had a chum to go with. She had two treatment thingies, a massage, a 3 course lunch and a soak in the spa all for £55!

Did a spa day a couple of years ago and for her birthday this year I got her loads of vouchers for her favourite beautician :) Problem is Christmas, her birthday and Mothers day work out to all be about 4 weeks apart from eachother :(
God Kel, isnt your mum selfish having her birthday between chrimbo and mothers day ;)
An advert just came on for a DS and Brain Training with the tag its a good mothers day gift! No it chuffing well isnt! My ma would neck me if I gave her that ;D

My mum always tells me she would like brain training, i have to remind her is don't have my ds anymore. :(
I gave my Mum my DS when I moved to Stafford as she played it much more than me. I got a DS lite around the same time.
We had Brain Training briefly but she got bored to death of it so went back to Polarium, Zoo Keeper and Bust a Move.

Mine's just had a DVD of the second series of Extras added for next weekend :D
Just have to make sure I remember to buy the card now :o

I'm taking my mum to see Joesph. she liked the TV show Any Dream Will Do and one of the Joseph's are in it (not the one that won but one of the ones she liked) :)
Just need to get a card and pick up the tickets at the weekend :D
I tend not to buy mum material stuff for Mothers Day, as I've found a bunch of flowers tends to hit the spot. To that end I went and arranged it in person with her local florist Saturday morning. In the past I've used Interflora (which sometimes ends up at the same florist) but decided to give the florist carte blanche this time as I know from past experience how good she is.
As for the card, Mum was looking in a shop and handed me a pile of 'em, and said 'I like these'. She doesn't know which ones I chose though (and I chose more than one in case she was looking). Doesn't normally happen that way around though. :)
Mothers day is going to be a funny one this year as I usually end up cooking for Sarah(Wife) My Mum, Sarah's Mum and Sarah's Nanna and give them some nice flowers. They usually all enjoy being together and having a good laugh. However as my Mum & Sarah's Mum aren't speaking, it will be something on Saturday night for My Mum and then the same again on Sunday for Sarah's side.
Right pain in the grass box people falling out :(

I got myself flowers today in anticipation that i wont get any next weekend
awwww :(
i think i'm either going to get my mum a pen, pencil case and some other bits to go in it - (she works in a school and the kids are always pinching her stationary) or some clothes.
although we 'do' these silly little holidays i think it's always nice to have an excuse to spoil the people you love (and i am a stickler for 'useful' presents rather than the boring tacky crap that's sold just because it's mothering sunday)
I had my photo delivered today, looks lovely blown up :)
Just need a frame now to fit the stupid dimensions ;D
Mum got her flowers. She got so many it took three vases to hold them all. :)
Anyone need flowers in Chelmsford area? Stacy's flowers in Dunmow High Street. Highly recommended. :)

I forgot about it until this afternoon :o Only ordered Mam's whisky today so it won't get there until Tuesday :(
I'm sure she'll understand though, she's well used to my memory by now :D
I've ordered her a bottle of Yamazaki 12yo. I had the 10yo and thoroughly enjoyed it but thought another couple of years in the cask would benefit it greatly, so I would think the 12yo should hit the spot nicely.
I think I'll be ordering a bottle for myself when I get home.
Joint b-day pres was Joseph tickets.
Also did a slow cooked lamb (Jamie Oliviers recipie) with roast potatos and yams today as going out to meal anyway tomorrow for sisters b-day!
Got one of those penguin cards too.
I got a fab handmade card and the new Goldfrapp cd so am very happy.
Have also got Paul here til late afternoon so all is good.
Happy mothers day to all the mums on the forum - hope you get spoilt for all your hard work :)
Bah :( Mums pressie didn't turn up.
HAHAHAA!! There were shenannigans afoot this morning, I was ordered back to bed by Daisy when I dared come downstairs earlier! Then I could hear lots of frantic whispering etc, then in they came! I got the funniest musical cards which Daisy sang along to opera stylee. And breakfast in bed!! I nearly got a hernia trying not to laugh.....I had 3 giant wraps stuffed with ham, pepperoni and salad (and hair! How I didnt barf I have no idea) and a bowl of chopped carrots and apples. I love my girlies :D
I love hearing all the whispering and plotting and having to pretend you haven't noticed!

I had my kids over to stay the weekend of Father's day one year. The youngest came into my room at 07:30 with a lovely cup of tea and told me not to move. I could hear the clatter of cooking things in the kitchen and thought "awww, how sweet". About half an hour later, the three of them trooped in with my "breakfast" which consisted of a mountain of instant mash, a huge pile of overcooked scrambled eggs and a whole tin of beans. I had to sit in bed and eat the lot trying not throw up with the sheer quantity of it. It wasn't too much of a chore though, since it was made with love. They never usually surfaced until 10:00 on a Sunday but they'd dragged themselves out of bed 3 hours early just to make me a special breakfast.

I took a gold Rolex off an assault victim and gave it to my mam.
The above was a joke before the call is made to internal affairs. :D
I got my mam an emerald and diamond pendant. Looked really nice while out shopping the other day and I knew she would like it.
