Mine is very simple. I don't use weights as I'm not looking to particularly build muscle, I use my own body resistance and fitness bands (giant pieces of elastic of varying thickness) to maintain lean muscle, and am trying to lower my body fat. I don't have a set resistance training routine but will generally pick about 6-7 of the following in 3 circuits. Almost all of the following I use the fitness bands for except press-ups, anything that involves jumping, and abs exercises:

20 press-ups/dive-bomber press-ups
20 squat jumps
20 alternating split squat jumps
15 band squats
15 cable overhead tricep extensions
15 lateral raises
20 seated row
20 standing chest press
20 stationary lunge
20 standing shoulder press
20 standing rotations
20 bicep curls
15 hip thrusts (huh!)
45 seconds plank/single-leg plank
15 double-crunches
15 burpees
20 45-degree lat pulldowns

So I'll pick 6 or 7 of those, alternating legs, arms and core so I can keep going to the end, rest for a minute, then do two more sets. That's Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I run to the gym, do 20 minutes of HIIT on the treadmill and run home again.

The great thing is that none of it is particularly strenuous and rarely lasts more than 30 minutes. I find this suits me so much better than prolonged gym sessions or 90 minute jogs. Half an hour a day is nothing as long as you can motivate yourself to get on with it. I have unfortunately seriously neglected it in the last two weeks though and will be starting anew this Monday. :)

Burpess ... OUCH !!! :D

My routine should be done within an hour and I'll be doing it straight from work so it doesn't take up too much time in the evenings :)

Well due to work my routine is now out of the window. However on monday I will be starting again.

Mon: 2 mile run along millenium path (gorgeous!)
Tues: Pole 45+ mins (combination of CV and strength and endurance)
Weds: 2 mile run (as mon)
Thurs: Power Yoga 45+ mins
Fri: Pole 45+mins

Weekend off - Becks birthday.

During all this week I'll be working on routines for classes and also jumping on pole to try out a new move if it suddenly appears to me.

Am also joining an adult gymnastic club on weds night to increase my flexibility and give me interesting new ideas for pole floorwork.

I vary exercises a lot between days. And I alternate weeks, i.e. 1 week I do heavy, 1 week I do light.

I do it on a rolling roster, in case I can't do that day I just carry it on to the next days. On days where I don't do weights I go to the gym and play basketball, or do some rowing and some (ugh) treadmill.

Also it's quite complicated :o I sometimes split Day 1, and day 2 with day 4 depending on time.

I've showed a range of weights they vary from light days and maximum on heavy days (and my current 1RM in brackets) - of course I don't do every exercises listed in one session as I said I've just showed every routine I do do. :)

Weights in KG.

Day 1:

Chest:

Incline Bench 60-95 (105)
Flat Bench 60-110 (125)
Decline Bench 60-100 (110)
Incline DB 22.5-35 (40 max DB weight :()
Decline DB 22.5-37.5 (40 max DB weight :()
Cable Flies 20-45 (55)
DB Flies 15-25 (30)
Narrow grip Dips 3x 12 reps + 1 rep till failure
Wide grip dips as above
Weighted Dips 5-15 (20)

Biceps:

Preacher curls on W bar 27.5-50 (60)
21s on olypmic bar 25-30 (32.5)
Hammer curls 15-22.5 (25)
Oylmpic bar standing curls 15-30 (35)

Day 2

Legs:

Olympic bar Squats 60-150 (170)
Front squats 60-80 (90)
Leg press 100-280 (300)
Calf raises 60-100 (125)
Lunges 60-80 (90)

Triceps:

Skull crushers 22.5-32.5 (40)
Cable pull down 20-60 (70)
Tricep extensions 12-20 (22.5)
Weighted tricep dips 20kg plate

Day 3

Deadlifts 100-170 (190)
Powercleans 60-100 (105)
Bent over rows 60-100 (115)
Lat pull downs narrow grip 60-100 (100 is max weight)
Lat pull downs wide grip 60-100 (100 is max weight)
Cable row 60-100 (100 is max weight)
DB pull overs 35-40 (40 is max db)
DB one handed rows 35-40 (40 is max db)
Cable cross over back extension 20-45 (55)

Day 4

Shoulders:

Shrugs 100-130 (150)
Lateral raises 12-17.5 (20)
Side lateral raises 12-17.5 (20)
Military press 50-80 (90)
Arnies 20-25 (27.5)
DB press 17.5-25 (30)
cable raises 15-30 (35)

It's relatively accurate. Certainly on the middle range weights my 1RM vary a lot though on average the weights are going up. I'm hitting the limit of my gym equipment in some areas which sucks.

How many sets is that?

I don't do them all in one sesh. I choose usually 3or4 from that list, and split it with Day 4 which is my overlap day. :)

Admiral Huddy

I was gunna say :D

Here's mine

The emphasis here is to limit each body group to 8 sets per session but hitting them twice a week. Rather than leaving them for a week using the normal split training method. This means 24 sets per session which seems quite a lot, but since they are split over 3 different muscle groups, it’s easier than it sounds. You’ll also notice I’m supersetting which basically keeps you moving. There’s no hanging around here or time change your ipod tracks. It's solid hard work for an hour and a bit.

The good thing about this routine is even if I miss a session, if I carry on in sequence, regardless of the week, then I’m still hitting all muscle groups twice within 7 days.

Day 1

Warm up muscle groups
4 x flat bench-press super-set with 4 Sets dumbbell flies
4 x Bicep 21s super-set with 4 x Narrow grip triceps presses
4 x Standing wide grip arm curls super-set with 4 sets of tricep pull downs
Cool down and stretch

Day 2

Warm up muscle groups
4 x Shoulder press super-set with 4 x lateral raises
4 x leg press
4 x bend over rows super-set with 4 unilateral side pulls
4 x leg extensions
Cool down and stretch

Day 3

Cardio
20 minutes cross trainer
20 minutes run
20 minutes row
Cool down and stretch

Day 4

Warm up muscle groups
4 x inclined bench press (dumbbells) super-set with 4 x dumbbell curls
4 x declined bench press (barbell) super-set with 4 x standing wide bicep curls (barbell)
4 x triceps dips with weights super-set with 4 x tricep pull downs
Cool down and stretch

Day 5

Warm up muscle groups
4 x shoulder press (barbell) super-set with 4 x front shoulder raises
4 x Seated rows
4 x Lat pull downs
4 x squat super-set with 4 x dead lift
Cool down and stretch

I've no idea of the weights, I just wack 'em on and see how things go.

Body Pump = thought I would try the other class as I will be going to it next week, different music and different exercises, including tricep dips and alot of tricep work - am going to ACHE tomorrow!

Thursday: 4km run = 21.49 - I wouldn't let it beat me this week! Even though I was in the hot and minging big gym AGAIN and I had to ask a work colleague to get me some paper towell to wipe the sweat from my brow. 100 situps - various styles, Leg lifts and stretch out

Body Pump - after work, I think I know my optimum weights for this new release so am going to work on improving my technique with these for a couple of weeks before upping them. Upping weights is always a difficulty when they bloody oversubscribe the classes!! Gah!
Thursday: Body Combat - just got back and I found it quite amusing - like I was in a Streetfighter game or something lol. Shoulders going to ache tomorrow from all the jabs! Did the stretches and skipping I missed over the weekend - 100 skips 10 cross skips, 100 situps - various styles, Leg lifts and stretch out.

Right, well my routine isn't very exciting to look at, as it mainly consists of classes. However, I'm going to try and add some jogs into there this week. I'm going to put my BP weights at the botton to, to keep a check on progress.

I think my routine has been a bit weights oriented of late due to the number of BP classes I do, so I think I need to add more cardio to my routine to see any fat loss. I'm going to my first boxercise class this week and want to do 2 jogs. Does this look like a reasonably balanced routine to you folks?

MON
Body Pump
(at least) 3Km jog - body pump doesn't start until 8pm so I will go the gym 1/2 hour early. Hopefully won't be too busy.

TUE

WED
Body Pump
Body Balance

THU
Boxercise - NEW CLASS!!!

FRI
REST (I'll be dead from my first ever Boxercise class)

SAT
Body Pump
Body Max (cardio & weights)

SUN
5Km jog outside, weather permitting

Body Pump Weights as of 05/04/08
Squat - 20Kg
Chest - 15Kg
Back - 15Kg (keeping light due to lower back pain) & 17Kg for last set
Triceps - 12Kg & 5Kg dumbell for sitting up extensions
Biceps - 10Kg
Lunge - 10Kg
Shoulders - 5Kg dumbells

I would be tempted to suggest dropping the BP classes in favour of a 2 day heavy weights split but you have to do what you enjoy and I know you LOVE the BP :)

You'll really enjoy Boxercise !

Thought you might say that :p I'd much rather do BP than free weights in the gym though. I know the results won't be as visible, but I just enjoy the BP so much and feel that if I dropped that classes then I'd be more inclined to skip a day if I felt a bit crappy. As it is, I have to book any classes I do which forces me to go even if I can't be arsed.

Really looking forward to boxercise :)

Yep, so I made it in every other day on average (although the absences would have most likely been weekends when I was up to other things). I've already been three times this month so I'm on track for the same again. 20 is pretty good going!

You have to do what you enjoy otherwise you won't put the effort in and it becomes counter-productive :)

I've had my PT swap my lower body routine around a little because there were a few exercises I HATED. If it becomes too much of a chore you'll find any excuse not to do it :/

Report on the boxercise once you've done it - will be interested to see how it compares to mine :D

It's amazing how your body gets used to certain things. I normally do 20 minutes of interval training on the treadmill - 2 min @ 9km/h, 1min @ 14km/h repeated. Today I bumped it up to 9.7 and 14.7 respectively and I am KNACKERED!

That's pretty good; I've done 10km in 48 mins before but that was back at uni, not sure what time I'd do it in now. I remember when I first started on the treadmill and 10km/h for ten minutes was exhausting. Now that's almost my jogging speed for the interval training!

14.7 was tough though - for some reason I thought I normally did 9.5 and 14.5 and was just upping it by 0.2... halfway through I realised the usual was 9 and 14! Hopefully in a couple of weeks it'll be 10 and 15.

Oh, and Body Combat makes me imagine people attacking each other with just their torsos!

Been to the gym 3 times this week and I've done 20 mins on the treadmill each time, admittedly more of a very brisk walk than an actual run :o Getting a new weights routine tomorrow where I'll be doing a 3 day split, I'll try to remember to post it when I get home. Plus I shall be getting back into some (although not as many as I used to) classes by the end of the month as thats when the new release comes out up here (cheers for the heads up on that one Kate!) :) Been too lax the last month or so and I'm hoping this will help things.

Aw man. I am SO scared. I have been excited but now I am scared.

Starting the gym tomorrow.

I know I am horrendously unfit. I really do get out of breath so so so quickly.

Looking forward to getting fitter though. I remember being fitter last year and was bounding around so much more.

Don't think I will be posting what work out I will be doing though as looking through you guys you all are doing amazingly. I doubt I would be able to touch on your routines!

I am about to start the gym up again after a years break due to work then a knee injury, so will start off slow especially for the cardio stuff involving my legs. The weights side i am not too worried about again will avoid legs stuff till i feel the cardio work on legs has helped out.

So can't really post planned workout until i can see what my knee allows me to do at this stage of its recovery. Whatever i do i know i will be in pain after it :p

Tonights session due to my hamstring bein gay consisted totally of medicine ball exercises. 4 sets of 15 reps, no breaks. All excercises done with a 6kg ball & some with a willing training partner.

Overhead throws
Chest Passes(standing)
Chest Pushes(lying down, partner drops the ball)
Heel Flicks
Kick Backs

My arms, ACHE

It's a shoulder and back day today.

HC2PPs today.
SLDLs
BORs
Shrugs
Arnies
Lateral raises
Some other shoulder exercises - I'll work it out later.

That should do me. I'm still on a heavy shift at the moment, light next week. Probably bringing the BORs up to 110kg but I'll see how it feels.

I love HC2PPs - they are HARDCORE though. Raaaaaar. Man I'm loving the gym at the moment.

Sinead - 40kg squats?! That's nearly your bodyweight isn't it?! :p Seriously though that's a huge amount of weight for your size - I is well impressed innit! We're so going to have to have a show down  :p

OKie... well today was fun! For me, it's a hard work out, but then I haven't been to the gym/done fitness for AGES (probably near 6months - year).

My routine is:

Treadmill Warm Up: 7mins
X Trainer: 15mins
Bike: 15mins

Theeen... (I bet this sounds so so so wussy..) 4 sets of 12 of each of these...

Chest Press: 14kg
Low Row: 14kg
Shoulder Press: 10kg - 15kg (she said see how I got on as I was an inbetweener)
Seated Leg Press: "unknown weight as it was broken - and not by me! \o/"
Squat: 5-10kg 8 Reps
Bicep Curl: 15kg
Tricep Extension: 15kg

And that's it. *feels a complete wuss*.

I actually felt giddy after the aerobic exercise too :/ Boooo.

Still, will see how I get on. Luckily in the mornings it looks like old biddys go along so I won't feel so conscious (though most of them were better than me which made me feel uber poo!)

Then come first full week in May its back to the gym 2-3 times a week plus the rowing maching at home the other days. 26-04-2008, 18:29
Pheebs, do you have ANY idea how long it takes, how much work and serious training it takes to build mega muscle for women ? ;) We don't have the hormones for it ! ;D

The mega muscley bodybuilding ladies you see have either taken steroids or have really got their diet and exercise nailed - by nailing the diet I mean they literally eat tonnes of chicken and rice 6/7 times a day.

Lift heavy and you'll build a little muscle which will not only give you a nice shape as the fat drops it will actually burn fat whilst you're resting :)

I lift as heavy as I possibly can and keep pushing myself.

Will
26-04-2008, 18:43
Absolutely - you haven't got enough testosterone and HGH in your blood stream to develop huge muscles - men are more fortunate as testosterone is a mild anabolic so helps muscle growth - you don't have anything to worry about!

"Check out my bulge now!"

I fell about laughing! In retrospect he MUST have said "bulges" but I heard "bulge" - still funny either way! I had to stop the squats and go elsewhere I was giggling sooo much (I think I even threw in a couple of snorts I laughed that much!)

Gym wasn't too scary. I found running easier than last time... I dunno why... I could have gone on for longer. After 8 mins on the cross trainer I was zonked though :( I carried on but at a lower level... felt pathetic :(

BUT! On a positive note, I haven't been exercising at all lately so it's good I'm doing something!

Oh yeh, another bad thing, my towel half fell down when I was getting stuff out of my locker. The changing room was full and I must have mooned and boobified all of them :( Went bright red and ran off into the changing cubicle :( BOOOOOOOO! *will take a bigger towel next time*

**** was just getting to 7x 150 (4th set - heaviest, starting at 110) squats and went a bit too low for my ability and collapsed. The rack caught it though, I'm fine, it was just so so so irritating, I had nothing left I couldn't even hold it. My form was fine, I didn't arch my back or try to compensate I just had nothing left I then tried again but couldn't even push up once on a full deep squat tempted to do partial squats but didn't see the point - so went to 90kg ATG front squats and annihilated myself that way for a couple of sets.

I'm not going to be able to walk tomorrow. Ah well - Sinead will have to look after me! :D

Ok had my reintroduction to the gym today and working out the new programme to suit my knee recovery. So pretty similar to the old routine really

40 Minutes cardio on the usual suspects equipment wise and a new one from my last visit a cross between a treadmill and cross trainer. Have a feeling me and that machine will require some adapting to. Only issue with the knee is the resistance level on the machines is half what i can normally do but perfect to slowly build up the knee muscles again.

Weights again pretty much as was before 15-30kg range for arms, shoulders etc to begin with partly due to being very out of shape and partly with elbow issue, yes i am falling apart :p Legs stuff weight wise has been halved from last time mainly with the knee recovery and me not wanting to wreck it by doing too much.

Class wise starting off with Tai Chi on Monday and will add in more classes as i get fitter, add more weight etc once knee/elbow are in better shape.

So all in all a good start today and will look at improving my diet over weekend to aid me in the gym work.

Had my second session today which ended up being 20 minutes of cardio with 5-10 minutes of weight work on shoulders and legs. Would have been more but had first Tai Chi class today which went well and i'm booked up for it again next Monday, as really enjoyed it.

Will be back at gym Wednesday for a full session and even though its only been 2 sessions, today went so much easier after being there on Friday. Didn't get anywhere near my cardio heart rate on the bike no matter what i tried my rate stayed at fat burn level instead of cardio level and rowing machine felt very easy. Might have just been a good day :p or i am fitter than i realised cardio wise :)

I can do 15mins now on the treadmill without passing out/bursting lungs!

*impressed with myself*

I did, however, think it would be a fun idea to try running for a minute at a higher speed. So, I turned it up a few notches and started sprinting away until my boobies started to gain memento and near but derailed me from the machine :(

Well, after a lil bout of silence, I'm gonna update my status.

This week saw me pull on my spikes for the 1st time in 5 weeks. I only did light hurdle work on tuesday & thursday & decided that I was fine to run at the weekend. Today, I lined up against a few good runners, nothing amazing. I sacrificed speed for stride pattern & it worked a treat. Correct leg take off every hurdle. Time was nowhere near what I'm capable of but I'm still officially injured so 3rd in my first race back, I can't complain.

3 weeks until the British League Match in Kingston. Lets hope it heals by then.

It's the heaviest I've pushed up - I'd love to be able to do twice my weight, but at 95kg it's not going to happen! lol!

It wasn't easy or that clean, it was a painful long hard push (sounds SO dodgy!) and almost failed but dug deep and got the bar up.

I'm sure you could. :)

Wohooo !! Go you ! \o/

Yeah, really pleased - as I said above it wasn't the cleanest or easiest or most perfect lift, but like you on squats I just had to push myself because I knew I could do better.

I'm now on over 1/2 a tonne (500kgs) for my 3 major compoud exercises.

140 bench
200 deadlift
170 squat

40 minutes of cardio - 12 minutes on the evil Treadclimber, 15 on the bikes, 1000m on the rower in about 5 minutes plus walking on the treadmill and usual walk to and from gym/train station to get there.

Managed to do 2 circuits of the weights and machines i have to use so not too bad after a weeks break.

Overall i am not that sore after yesterdays efforts just my elbow, which i was in hospital with a few years back due to a serious infection complaining about the workout. Looks like i have that to slowly strengthen back up again in addition to my knee.

Could you do me a quick favour... Measure from the underside of your bicep on one side of your arm, over the top to the underside on the other side :)

(I know benching doesn't work the biceps but I'd still bet that your biceps are bigger than my entire arm :p)

lol! Well flexed after a workout they are 17.5 inches, but flexed non work out 17 inches. :)

Any other stats?! :p

That makes me feel a bit better.

And as for Thighs as big as Piggy's waist - Are you a giant?! Jesus, that's immense!

Do you watch what you eat very seriously as a part of that training?

I wouldn't say VERY seriously, i'd say I'm relatively careful but I do monitor what I eat, and count calories, proteins, carb intakes. I don't drink alcohol at the moment, I also don't drink fizzy drinks (such as coke, lemonade etc...), I don't eat sweets or cakes! It's quite boring actually!

I love my food though - I eat a lot but I eat well i aim for around 3000 cals a day of which a minimum will be 150g of protein and a minimal amount of carbs though I do love carbs :o. Don't get me wrong I do eat some naughty food, but it's like a treat.

I don't eat sweets or cakes too often (more down to if I don't buy them then I'll save money), but I do drink... a lot.

I just want to bulk up a little, I feel/look a bit weedy at the moment.

It's not that hard work once you've stopped doing it. I don't miss cakes, sweets etc... I don't really miss alcohol. I do have a glass of wine from time to time and a beer now and then - but from the start of the year I've probably had no more than 10 units of alcohol, maybe even less. If I'm honest I don't have the time for drinking at the moment so that's probably the big reason, and I don't like drinking during the week - and furthermore it's so ****ing expensive in London!!

It's a lifestyle change - I've changed my life completely maybe not for the better, but at the moment it's what I need to do. I'm up stupidly early in the mornings and I'm sleeping REALLY well and eating well so it's working for me for the moment. Then again all I do a the moment, is eat, sleep, train, work - repeat. A bit boring but I'm busy at the moment with the new flat - once settled I might start having more of a life lol.

However, I'm healthy, I feel good, I'm looking "ok" (super self critical), I'm sleeping well, so my overall feeling is ok. It's also helping to keep my mental health in check - I might even start being happy soon!

Around £25 per month. But I'm there 3-4 times a week, and I can use the squash and basketball courts, the pool, the tennis courts and any of the facilities they have (which I do use). It's part of my life in fact it's very important to me - I seldom drink so that £25 is just taken off my "drink" budget for example.

Ah, lot less than I was thinking then.

The local monster David Lloyd centre round the corner from work is £70 a month per person! Our company is offering a £25 subsidy towards this for anyone who wants to sign up but £45 still sounds a bit steep to me, even though the facilities are very impressive.

My local one had a special offer when it opened so I only paid £310 for 13 months. Apparently the first 200 members will get that price for life if they continue to renew, but I'll believe it when I see it! Totally worth it as I go at least three times a week, sometimes six.

Upped my jog/sprint to 10.4km/h and 15.4km/h today. Scary when I think that when I started using the treadmill I couldn't even run at 10km/h for more than ten minutes... now it's my relaxed jogging speed!

I'm deciding between LA Fitness and Topnotch at the moment, Topnotch is winning though

http://www.lafitness.co.uk/ (Its like a smaller quieter David Lloyd)

http://www.topnotchhealthclubs.com/ (Maidstone is very similar to the pics on that page, a semi blackout cardio room, electric climbing wall, bottom lit pool etc)

LA Fitness is £33 and closer by about five hundred yards, Topnotch is £35 down from £42 because I work for Kent County Council :)

Slightly scared about going back to a gym but I know this is the only way I will be able to sort myself out.

I'm almost certainly going to be doing the Body for Life programme again http://bodyforlife.com/

MB good going on the gyms and good luck with it :)

I would suggest you let the gym set you a programme to start off with especially with not being at a gym for ages and with your elbow still recovering. They can cater the programme to suit the elbow recovery, as they did for me with my knee and adding in exercises to strengthen it.

As to Body for Life i am somewhat dubious towards it especially after seeing one set of photos of someone claiming to have done this programme which were clearly photoshopped along the way. This doesn't make me think well of it if someone has to do this or claims it did this when there is doubt over the photos of the person involved.

But with you not being at a gym for ages i'd lay off on the Body for Life if you are going to do it until you get used to the gym again, your elbow is better and you are fit enough to do serious workouts. No point in being in so much pain you cant go to the gym again for a few days.

I did BfL five years ago and lost 4 stone and built a lot of muscle, the thing about it is that it is a self limiting pyramid set lifting program and a short but effective cardio scheme.

I don't have a lot of love for personal trainers in gyms and prefer to be left well alone by them unless I specifically ask them for help. I found the ones at David Lloyd particularly annoying, as they spent 90% of their time doing nothing and the other 10% talking to attractive female members :/

Admittedly BfL is a bit 'American' and they push the losses but the major + point is its is relatively simple to do keep track of. I will speak to the gym staff at Topnotch (I decided to join that one) but I'll almost certainly be doing my own thing. I'm off to the joint clinic tomorrow and if they give me the all clear I'll be stating at the gym over the weekend :)

Opposite way in my DL gym MB as the instructors are all females on the whole any time i am in during the day. At least i know the BLF does work and hopefully it does again for you, as trust friends saying more than that website due to the photoshopped photos issue.

All my DL did when i restarted last month was take me through the old programme i had added a few new exercises, i adjusted some of the resistances due to injuries and weaknesses then i have been left to my own devices. I will admit the instructors at DL in Maidstone do love to chat a lot or dissapear the moment you need them and the ones up in Edinburgh are a lot better.

Good luck at the clinic and even if they dont clear you for some exercises you can at least start on the cardio side with some of that equipment to ease yourself into the gym.

Shows i am a different build then to you just under 14 stone at present and 34-36 waist sighs.

I did go up to 36 myself, but that was after a bit of a bulk, I then cut, and am down to 34, but it won't get down much further naturally now unless I lose the muscle.. and having worked so hard to get to wher eI am now I ain't doing it! lol!

With all this talk of waists I decided to check out my measurements - I still have a fat arse which pushes my hip measurement up (I used this (http://www.venus.com/assets/sizechart/2007/measurements.jpg) as a guide where to measure) but its about 6 inches smaller than it was if not a bit more :) 35-28-42

You're getting that perfect corset bod on the way then :D That's hella good progress :)

Excessive fat below the belly button is excessive cortisol, love handles are owing to insulin, and thighs, chest and hams are owing to and oestrogen imbalance. If you look into addressing those issues they'll help. :)

Following on from that a good way of lowering the fat around the hips, legs and chest believe it or not (oh and the bum) is as follows and is all due to oestrogens (there numerous oestrogens) imbalance:

Must Supplement to help:
Take DIM (http://www.dimfaq.com/site/toc.htm). The lower limbs on ladies is estrogen dominated but affects men too believe it or not.

Specific Exercises:
6 sessions of Lunges (BWx12 reps, then add DBs), then 6 sessions of Split Squats (3-4 secs eccentric, BW first then DBs), then repeat like that.

Lunges will hit the lower glutes more, and Splits will hit the inner thighs more (plus the rest of the legs, but the 2 aforementioned areas are the top ones).

Other Exercises:
ATG Front & Back Squats, RDLs.

I'm sure Roberta will have some comments/suggestions. What do the girls think of that? I asked some friends at the gym what their other halves did exercise wise to hit "trouble" spots which I know a lot of ladies seem to have issues with.

Please don't take this comment as anything but advice it doesn't imply I mean anything - just trying to help.

Similarly with the love handle and bellow the belly button fat is insulin/cortisol affected so taking supplements which counter act those two will help, and that's for men especially.

To be honest I've found the best way to lower fat in all areas is running. I would definitely balance that with a good weight training programme though, and the exercises you've chosen are what I would have picked too. I'd also add in some core strengthening moves (plank, sideplank, prone swimming, swandive and scissors in particular) as I'm big on core work.

Three weeks of holidays and no exercise come back to bite me on the ass!

In those weeks I tried my best to eat healthily (to a certain extent :p not easy though with so much yummeh foods!) and I went swimming twice and the gym once (my cousin has a gym and roof with infinity pool at her condo... AMAZING!!!)

So now I have a month to my next holiday ;) which is a proper sunworship hol so am back on it!

Going to aim to run at least three times a week, go to body pump and either combat or attack once a week too. Eating as much salad, fruit (after my holiday I realise how tasteless the fruit is here :() and not so much carbos.

We are also looking for a Kickboxing class... my gym used to do a social one, but no longer... darn it!

Anyway thats my update... thank goodness for lighter evenings - its quite nice to run outside instead of on a sweaty treadmill (even if it is polluted London).

I haven't been to the gym this week due to being a complete moose pie with my burnt legs (could barely move them without wincing - let alone run/squat etc!)

I am going in again in a min and gonna work my buuuuuuuttocks off!

Speaking of buttocks, mines smaller I am sure. Not by loooads but I can tell in different clothes :D I can also feel the difference around my waist :) I should probably measure it all and see what differences there are. :)

*yaaaaaaaay*

I think I'm on the same level of what I do as you Mei mei! Running and gymming 3 times a week, walking the dog everyday for 30-40mins (when I say walking I proper pace it out and run about and things - I'm generally more knackered than she is half way through!) and healthy eating! Nom nom nom nom! So happy strawberrys and melons and pineapples are about :D

I have been very slack with gym last few weeks mainly couldn't be bothered, had no cash to go :( and making sure i rested my elbow up fully before going back. I've been doing both of these for the last twelve weeks and can see and feel a difference even though I didn't have all that much fat to begin with. It's just a great, healthy way to live and I've basically changed my lifestyle with it. Some of my meals have become a bit odd as I try to fit in the protein and fibre I need, but it does work. Today I had a hard-boiled egg and an apple at 11am. :D

My Gym were doing some kind of competition today around the weights area. They were racing press ups and all sorts. After a bit of a run, I did some stretching and watched a few people wonder over to do their own routine on the weights and as they did, PTs were collaring them and pushing them in to joining in.

I just waltzed right up stairs and showered and changed there and then! No blooming way I was going to be pulled into some sit up competition against tough big muscle building macho nacho blokes.

*slightly sad I couldn't do my full routine*

Oh and I do believe they're doing the same tomorrow. Sooo.. I'm not going :) No point driving into town, parking and doing some cardio and nothing else and then coming home. I will just go for a super dooper long walk.

*make me feel bad*

Because I don't like being watched when I work out and that's what my gym felt like yesterday. Plus, it takes me long enough to get down there and back when being nice and sunny, I can just jog around with the dog outside.

They've only got it on today so it's not like it's going to stop me forever. I just don't like to be dragged into competitions on things I *know* I will look super poo at and feel super poo about and then that will make me not want to go back as I will be remembered as the super poo one.

My gym's been rammed most nights this week :( Still hasn't stopped be from going, I get there early and basically try and hog a bench - sounds really selfish, but the thing is we get a lot of kids there now who should theoretically leave by 530 (it's a school gym) - and they just get in the way. I'm lucky in that people all know me at the gym (I almost live there :o) and tend not to bother me - in fact I've become almost a part of the furniture! lol! However I don't like having to muscle my way in, hence why I get there early. It makes training hard though when you're trying to keep to a strict routine and people start helping themselved to your equipment - grrrrr.

So Pheebs I know how you feel, but you've just got to be bloody minded and jsut get on with it else I'd never spend time there.

Pheebs
13-06-2008, 08:53
I will go down there but not on competition days :) I am so so happy and proud of you to have the confidence to hog an area and get on with it - I wish I could! It's taken me so much to get to the gym in the first place... if I can't be on a treadmill away from everyone else then I will find something else to do until I can :( Personally I just can't do it :( I suck - booo! Weights wise I am fine with other people about and around me... not bothered at all... but when they're pulling people into competitions and groups of people are watching others and dragging them to do it... I just can't do it as I feel super silly!

Been told I sound like I thought doing a small amount of cardio work was pointless (in general) and it made others feel bad because sometimes that's all they can do. I am so so sorry and completely gutted if that's how it came across - it's literally because it does take forever to get to my gym and I would only go there, be uncomfortable and do a minimal work out and go away again feeling poo about myself. For other people I'm sure it works and is beneficial, but for me it is pointless - I'm better off running around back home.

I am so sorry for hurting peoples feelings :(

That kind of thing used to annoy me too. I personally don't feel the need to compete to prove myself, my battle is won or lost in the mirror or on the scale I don't need to know I can bench more than some musclehead to feel good about myself (I also get some pleasure from the fact afore mentioned musclehead is a moron).

My new gym has a weight pit but the machines are in a different place and there are two different areas of machines both of which are really cool. The first is light and airy with 4 42" TVs, no sound is on and you can plug headphones into the machines and tune to any of the 4 channels showing. The second room is amazing , it has no windows some very low overhead lighting and a MASSIVE projector screen (the whole front wall) showing music videos :D. They also have a rotating climbing wall and a spin area which is set out much like the dark cardio room.

I'm really looking forward to starting going but want to be ready.

What were you going to do in the weights area Pheebs, I'm a great believer in lifting weights, I've seen people do cardio for an hour a day every day and not get the changes they want but the ones who lift get much quicker results and as long as they don't drop to stupidly low BF% look and hold themselves better. Lifting is the way forward, and I'll be starting when I get back from the Scotland meet :)

The more muscle you have the more your body will use your energy/food efficiently to feed them and maintain them. :) Lifting weights and doing a proper weight lifting routine DOES help to shed fat, doing cardio along side accelerates the process.

Sounds like you have a good routine there, a combination of weights and cardio is the way to go I beleve. Muscle burns more calories than fat when at rest so the more muscle you have the faster you will burn fat when you exercise and even when you don't. I think people underestimate how hard it is to become big (buff) and are afraid of it, believe me it takes a long time to get big unless you are genetically predisposed to it and most people can lift to failure at around 6 reps without putting on a lot of muscle mass, some people are lucky, unfortunately I'm not one of them, I'm a hard gainer, which is annoying  but I'm not looking for huge amount of muscle this time, I'm more interested in a leaner look which I know I can achieve.

The new gym is cool but despite joining I'm not in a position to start just yet, soon though, very soon.

I have to say I do think you are big enough Will and your body is probably telling you that by reducing the speed at which it will build muscle. Last time I saw you had shoulder mass to kill for and broad lats which are for me the keystones of a powerlifter look.

The problem with body building is that it can become a little like the situation some women get into with body shape etc. We look at examples that are effectively unachieveable and set them as our benchmarks and then feel bad when we don't achieve them. The prime examples in body building only stay 'ripped' for a few days around cutting and then go back to a happy medium or bulk again, and many of the best bodies out there (even the ones on actors) are chemically assisted or touched in using photoshop style packages.

I'm not saying people shouldn't try but there are limit to what can be achieved naturally.

Again I think you're right. We're always wanting the unachieveable. I for one wouldn't use anything except a protein shake and maybe some vitamins.

I'm not too bothered about the whole bulking/cutting side of things, I like to bulk as cleanly as possible. I'm not after getting any bigger I'm relatively happy with my size, just build up my strength a little more and obviously improve the definition and shape of the muscle.

I will always feel the need to push myself though, as long as I don't feel I'm overdoing it and my body will tell me, then I don't see any harm with it. Just like cardio, I'll always try and go that little bit faster or try that little bit harder.

Thanks for the kind comments, however as you stated it becomes almost like an obsession but the endorphins of getting a good pump at the gym is just so addictive.

Have you tried Creatine? That might give you a little lift in the muscle mass and strength enough just to go a little further on the natural building side, as I said I don't think you really need to go any further. I never bothered with the bulk/ cut cycle because I feel I want to look how I look all the time and as I wasn't preparing for competition it was a bit pointless for me.

Weights wise - today i shall be helping 3 Irish girls move into a flat in my street!

Sundays plans - Sand dunes! Absolutely hammer myself into the ground. 1 week & 1 day until I head to Bulgaria so I gotta get all the cardio I can done. Do it well & effectively & the gym in my hotel shall keep me going whilst over there.

I think I would prefer it to be an after work class, but will probably keep going to these classes for a while till I decide/can afford the membership for the Kickboxing school that I found the other week - hopefully Rob can go to that too.

Still shaking a bit from the Raarrrr punching, but it was a good session, topped off with bumping into an old buddy ;)

Cool! There was a girl in my class on monday and she had PINK ones... :p I thought of you and our knowing mutual disapproval of such item! Lol

How much were yours and where you get em from? :)

Went to Kat's gym last night - Virgin Active... the BIGGEST gym I've ever been in, there was so much space! 2 exercise studios, spin studio, kinesis studio, main gym with the CV machines and weight machines and free weights, then a smaller cv room, 25m pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, powerplates... tbh there wasn't anything I thought was missing!

We went to go to the Gliding class but the teacher didn't turn up :/ so went to Kinesis - which was different and I managed to underestimate, good fun though and also powerplate class, in between I did 10mins running and 5 on the Treadclimber (new machine for me!) and 5 on the Gliding machine. Then I did 10 lengths of the pool and had a well deserved chill out in the Jacuzzi, Steam and sauna... nice!! :D

Ooodles of towels and Molten Brown showergels, conditioners and body lotion... even makeup removal pads!

All of this for a lovely £135 a month!

I think I'll let Kat continue to pay and I'll pop in now and again as a guest ;)

I liked powerplate - but like with Kinesis I underestimated it. They both look like they are easy, but its the endurance that got me! Don't think I could do all of that more than once a week... felt v toned after - we left at 9pm!!!

Current gym routine = non-existent :( Please feel free to text me around 4pm to nag me to go, I keep coming up with excuses not to and it isn't doing me any good :(

Edit: I didn't manage to leave work until 4:45 and usually I would have just thought sod it and headed home but I decided to go along, fully prepared for it to be packed. Turned up to discover that due to staff sickness it was closing at 6 anyway and that I had the place to myself. Managed my cardio and a few sit ups before my head reminded me my migraine hadn't quite left me yet. Ended up having a chat with the instructor who was working and she is going to draw up some food lists/meals for me to try - its a kinda experiment so we'll see how it goes, should get it from her sometime next week.

My strength is coming up! I can now do a basic Flag. This move is easy for men due their greater upper body strength but hard going for women!

Just got round to seeing your vid lady - v impressive! :D well done!

Was that young Aslan trying to get in on the flag action? :p

If you don't feel 100% then it's best to leave it really, I left halfway through my workout a few weeks ago because I had a headache :(

Hope your food thing works out :)

Yeah 2 on 1 should work a treat! ;)

Cool...thank you! There's a boxing shop in Brighton that I'm going to visit at the weekend and see what they have.

Well, I had my first proper session at the gym last night and I'm not feeling too bad this morning. Arms are a bit shot but other than that I just ache a little. It was nice to get started again so hopefully I can keep my routine this time.

Finished off with some running which I've always been crap at so think it's something I'd really like to work on and improve if I can.

Not to self - trying to keep up with SoaD Bounce on the x-trainer isn't the best of ideas (even more so when you're still coughing your lungs out after being ill) :o

Not the best of ideas hun :p

I have my running/gym music and it's very steady paced, and not too fast.

I still need to buy some running shoes, will be heading to the shop in a couple of weeks.

Tabata Mmm.

During my superset period, I tend to only leave 10-20 seconds between sets. I guess this works the same way. After 2 weeks, I'm stronger and fitter and the fat falls off. Not good for bulking though.

I've just ordered loads of Protein tubs.. Should keep me going 'till Christmas.

There was a guy doing this I think at the gym today. He was deadlifting for a set time with a stopwatch, brief pause then jumped on the running treadmill flatout, pause, then back to the deadlifting. Looked really hardcore but bloody impressive.

How are you getting on with this?

It's chuffing awesome !

I do Tabata squats with a 25kgs bar followed by Tabata squat thursts followed by tabata power lunges

Including a 1K run to warm up, ab work and a stretch.. my workout is done within about 30 mins and I'm well and truly f***** ! ;D

I think it will really help strip the fat and get my fitness levels up

I went to the first pump class in a while. The gym was horrifically sweaty and my trousers stuck to my legs... scchiiiiiiippppppppp!

Ha ha... I ripped my pants during squats! :D

Not too bad thankfully! Left my leggings at work (brought them in specially too!) so had to wear my trousers...grr!!!

Haha! I ripped mine during a yoga class once!

Ran about 7k today along the seafront. Was boiling and not the perfect weather! Finished walking the 10k back to the car. Was training one of my ladies for the Swansea 10k. We're on target. Yay!
