Lady at work brought her laptop in as it was riddled with spyware and trojans. After installing AVG, Spybot and Adaware, I've cleared out all of the crap and it seems to be fine....apart from now there is no internet connection. It was working fine before I did anything but now nothing shows at all in Network Connections and nothing is listed when I ipconfig /all.

Any ideas as to what is going on? I did remove some things from startup using MS config and Spybot, but I searched the net for each string to make sure of what they were and thought they were OK to clear. Only one I'm not sure of now is one that started netdde.exe bout something called Aaou.

Any ideas on where to start?

Still no joy after running through Leo's link. Only thing I can do is install SP2 which it downloaded yesterday but hasn't been installed yet. What do ya reckon?

Nope....it's like there's not even any network stuff installed, even though I know there is and it was working fine.

Can you ping to 212.58.226.232 from a command line. If you can ping to this, but not the BBC, then it's a DNS resolver issue.

I know that with some installs of XP, it's taken a while for the IP address to renew.

Are you also saying you can't see the NIC in your network connections? If that's the case, the driver isn't installed for the NIC. Make sure you have the correct chipset drivers (normally inc Ethernet drivers) installed.

**** it.....going for the SP2 install.

Huddy, I can't even ping the router. It's like there are no network connections even available but I know they're there and all drivers are installed and working fine.

I think I've had this before but my memory is as crap as ever. Just go through the process of deleting all network settings & then manually putting them in yourself. I know it looks like it's done but only deleting & redoing it manually works.
Now don't go running off trying that just think about it for a mo as like i said my memory is crap.

But under Network Connection there is nothing showing in the control panel, so I can't even put settings in manually.

Ok I know you are not stupid so forgive me if I'm throwing basics at you but have you checked the drivers in device panel. Have you tried running network connection wizard.

Are the link lights On on the NIC?

Install SP2 anyway.

Yes mate, been through all of that. It's just really strange that it was all working fine one minute, then just stopped.

I can't help thinking it's a dodgy NIC and/or bad NIC driver. See if you can grab the latest driver for the NIC and retry. The fact you can ping to local host suggest there's nothing wrong with the TCP/Ip installtion on your machine. PnP should pickup the NIC as soon as it's installed. If both LEDs are on, then it must be the drivers.

What NIC/Mobo/Laptop is it?

Have you tied connecting to internet with the Router?

Still installing SP2 now so not trying anything else right now.
If this doesn't work, I'll try and reinstall drivers. It's some Compaq latop, not looked at the specifics yet.

I think it will work with SP2..

Is the network card showing in Device Manager? (R click My Computer - properties - hardware etc) It might be disabled in there. Any yellow excalamtion marks?

If it's not showing it might have got disabled in the bios somehow.

You can also uninstall and reinstall it from there. If it's missing let the system do a search with the mag glass icon.

Worth checking the networking services too (Start - run - services.msc) but it's been too long and I'm too drugged up so I can't remember which services need to be running now :(

DHCP, DNS, Network Connections, NLA etc

FFS, why do we take on these things? Finished installing SP2 and now on reboot I get the following error...

STOP: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
The image ole32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

This is going to need a proper rescuing now :/

Sounds like the spyware got a little deeper into the system than you expected. Clearly wasn't detecting the NIC which could be corrupt drivers, especially if other files are now coming back corrupt as well. I'd be wary of the hard drive just incase that's on it's way out.

Currently downloading a copy of XP Home so I can get into the recovery console and replace the offending file.

All sorted now :)

Replaced ole32.dll in the recovery console and then restarted. Still had problems with no taskbar and RPC not starting. Did a system file check and scan and it's all repaired and up and running :)

Then reinstalled the network driver and it's working a treat. AT LAST!!!!

Cheers for all the input :)
