View Full Version : How do you guys get Parcels?
I am currently have been waiting for a parcel for about 2 weeks now. First it delivered when i was at work, then arranged for Saturday Delivery which never came. Apparently I should have got a pone call to confirm it but i never got that call. At last resort I asked them to delivery it to my local post office so i can pick it up on Saturday. Went up there today to find that the parcel is still in the depot.
:angry::'(
Called them up and asked what's going on, and they clearly don't know as the system shows that "delivery instructions received", the instruction being delivered to my post office.
I was calm all the way through but really wanted to have a go at someone, but it's not the fault of the person i was speaking to and he has guaranteed that it will be delivered to my post office this time round.
So how do you guys get parcels delivered when you work all the time? Do you take a day off just for it?

You Need a Neighbour Like Me & You need to give your mobile number to whoever the Courier is ;)
Couriers Love having the customers moby number & will get those drops out the way first in the knowledge that they will get the drop done quickly. Every single time I get a bell on the Moby, Starts with the normal crap but I take over with some friendly banter & local instructions on how to find my house with a Tea waiting if you want one comment. They Never stop for a tea but appreciate Local directions, tips on any dodgey parking spots & Direct comms by moby with whoever is signing for the parcel.
So you know that bloke/neighbour you slate off for not working & standing about in the street chatting to everyone. Get to know him ;D
With Royal Mail, they return it to the depot (5 mins walk from my house). They open at 8am so I drop in before work the next day and grab it then. With most other couriers they try one attempt, leave a card and come back the next day. If you sign the card with instructions on where to leave the parcel on their return they will do so without a signature in person. Helps that I live in a good area for that though! If it's something important I ask my retired neighbour if I can address it to him.

I go collect it from the depot, if it arrives when i'm not home
I can't do that, too far away for me to get to as I don't drive.
Wait for them to card you (if royal mail) then call the redelivery service and get them to send it to your local post office. you can then collect right up until 5.30pm most evenings.
when it wasn't delivered I called up the office again and demanded that they take it down there that afternoon - and they did :) brought it down with the last collection.
The perils of living on your own and working every day of the week.
its a nightmare really. Fortunately my new employer is OK about having stuff delivered to work. I pushed a bit the other day by having 8 tyres delivered though :p
The advantage for us is that Phil has Friday afternoons off - he spent yesterday racing round Norwich getting a number of parcels that had been attempted delivered in the week!

Bet people had trouble getting to your desk with 8 tyres surrounding it, The pic in my head is Hilarious. You are My kinda Gal
The depot for parcel force is not the same for Royal Mail for me, and it's much further away, without a car it is difficult to get to as it is on a industrial estate. Moreover, it is only open office hours, me being working during office hours means I am at work when they are, plus they don't even have a manned counter, so even if i turn up, the only way I could pick it up is by chance i run into one of the couriers drivers just coming back or leaving so i can catch him.
The thing is i don't open the post so getting non-work related items delivered at work will get opened thus its not very professional, especially if one of the partners sees I go and pick up a bunch of DVDs or whatever at the post room.

Now that dad is off sick (for nearly 8 months now) there is usually someone in when the post comes. If not then i nip down to the depot just down the road.

Unfortunately I put them straight in the car (well only 6 fit - 2 went in my workmates car!!!)

Well that's a bit boring isn't it.
Don't s'pose any of your race meets are at Mallory or Donnington are they ?
Reading this thread makes me very glad I live with my parents :D
They're only out intermittently as my Dad's only teaching part time now so 9 times out of 10 someone's in for a parcel.
Plus we know the postman really well so he'll always try various neighbours before giving up. Nice to finally have a great postman.

I couldn't do that anymore, hit 21, graduated - had to leave :p
I value my own complete independence over everything.

That's assuming a lot about me. Different strokes for different folks. We're all in entirely different situations I'm sure :)

Nup - most of them are on airfields, although the MR2 Challenge has meets at both those tracks (I think). Probs too far for us to go though, we are spoilt with Snetterton just down the road :)

I didn't mention anything about you :)
I just said I couldn't do it, as I feel that if I was living at home I wouldn't be independent.
I know plenty of people that still live at home and are independent :)

Ok then :) it didn't seem overly clear in your earlier post. But makes sense now.

I still say get chatty wth your Neighbours, All of them.
Not enough social interaction between neighbours these days & this is a Sure fire way of interacting with them. When asking a simple I'll do the same for you is all that is required to keep it all friendly. Nobody wants people knocking round cadging but Everybody wants locals to watch out for them ;)

Sorry, I do see how it comes across - I guess the one thing I'm "jealous" of is that over 80% of my salary just vanishes wheras if I could live with my mum it would be more like 40%.
But as you say, different strokes :)
If it's royal fail, I just pop down the local depot as it's 5 mins away. If it's City Link, the local depot is now a lot closer so just pop there. Normally if I know there is going to be nobody at home, then I get stuff delivered to work. 1 of the perks of working for your dad :D
Luckily my mum has retired and only teaches part time every so often, so most of the time someone is in.

I think that if I go and speak to the back door man (ooer) at work I can get stuff delivered to work, but working in diagnostics labs means they have to open everything that comes in to make sure it won't contain any contaminants.

I've tried to get to know my neighbours, the refuse to answer the doors though - I've knocked on many occasions when I can even hear them in the house walking around. knock really loud and they just turn their TV's up louder or whatever.
As long as it isn't something too big I try and get it delivered to work. If it is something I really need to get on time I usually have to arrange to get it delivered to my folks (though they are a 30 minute drive away so it's not ideal).
Couriers aren't too bad as if they can't deliver and take it back to the depot I can always nip out at lunchtime to pick it up (all the local courier depots are in Inverness). If it's Royal Mail though it's a pain - the local sorting office is only open Mon-Sat 08:00 - 13:00 which is no use to me as I have left for work by then. As I work in a different town I can only pick it up on Saturdays. That is of course if they leave a card to say they have attempted deilvery, Royal Mail probably only leave a card in 30% of cases.
As for leaving stuff with neighbours, this bothers me that they sometimes do this without consent. I had an alcoholic abusive neighbour that I eventually refused to have any dealings with. Fortunately the times things have been left with neighbours they left it with my other neighbour and not him, but that was just through pure luck and not anything else. Lucky as well as they are all in full time work as well so generally if I am not in neither are any of them.
Royal Mail - Postie knows the drill and leaves them for me
Parcelforce - Driver knows the drill and leaves them for me
Parceline - Driver knows the drill and leaves them for me
DHL - Card me and don't reattempt. I collect from Loughborough
Businesspost - Card me and don't reattempt. I collect from Beaumont Leys
Interlink Express - Card me and don't reattempt. Have to race to the depot in Markfield because it shuts at 5 or some equally stupid time.
TNT - I have never had a delivery from! But I'd get them dropped at work, it's easier.
What is most stupid is that they could deliver it to my work address (but i don't find that appropriate and i could get in trouble), so I asked if they could deliver it to the post office in Worcester which is like 5 doors away from my office. They can't :dunno::pebbles:
Some reason they can only take it to post office in the town of the original destination, but it's ok to deliver it to a totally different address in another town all together...........
You forgot Citylink :p
No I didn't, the only CityLink delivery we've had I was in at the time, so that doesn't count.

Lies. Citylink depot is in Barrow upon Soar, which is a stupid place and miles from anywhere.
Furthermore, I am the boss of YOU :p

I get most stuff delivered to my work, it's fine as long as it's not big. Bigger stuff I get delivered to home and hope it comes on one of my days off or go and collect, either that or I get it delivered to mummykins' work.

I get all my stuff delivered to work apart from when the people I'm ordering from won't send it to another address :/
If it's send by RM it's no problem because Jamie goes to the sorting office every morning anyway ( HURRY UP MY NEW PUNKYFISH STUFFS !!! ) but if it's another courier it can be a pita :/
How do you guys get Parcels?
I usually order stuff to be delivered...;)
USPS - Am on first name basis with the postie, so he knows just to leave it in my truck or on the porch.
UPS - I helped him out of the ditch one time in the snow, so he'll go out of his way to either put it in the garage, in my truck, or on the porch.
Both of the above know I have dogs, so the packages actually have to go IN my truck (open door, put package on seat, slam door REALLY hard as it's an old truck). Both also know I work nights so knocking at the door is a REALLY bad idea for me. They know just to treat it as if I'm not home.
DHL - Normally knocks and wakes me up, or just sets it on the porch.
Anyone else knocks, then leaves it sitting on the porch swing.
Usually get it all sent to work. Everyone does. Reception are used to it :)
Otherwise get it sent to my parents. If I can't do any of those I'm lucky enough to be able to arrange to work from home/wait for it before coming into work.

I only get small things sent to work, after an incident where I ordered a five foot punchbag and it arrived full of sand. I thought it was just the bag. Was quite amusing for them I guess to watch me drag a five-foot, hundred-kilo mass wrapped in a tarp across the car park. Anyone else must have thought it was a dead body.

I normally only order stuff when I am at home. It'd be a holiday from Uni so I'll be in and awake, unless they deliver at 7.30am or something stupid. So normally its a 15 minute walk to the sorting office if its Royal Mail or somehow persuading Mum she really wants to drive to some dirty industrial estate in Milton Keynes. :D

Bloody Citylink
I ordered stuff from Ebuyer last week and requested delivery on Friday when I got home. Stupid ****ers sent it out early and Citylink tried to deliver it on Wednesday - I was still on the rig and Kelly was at work, so they carded it. I got Kell to ring them and re-arrange delivery for Friday. I waited most of the day on Friday and then phoned them to find out what was happening. I didn't get through top the local branch, must have been a regional office. The girl said she didn't usually answer calls about the Newcastle depot but from the calls she did get, she said they were "Bloody useless" - I was forced to laugh. She said the instruction to re-deliver on Friday had gone through but the local branch had simply failed to do so. She arranged for delivery on Monday and gave me the number of the local depot so I could phone them and make sure they didn't **** up again.
If it's royal mail is either gets left in the porch or the local collection place is only 5-10 mins away and open at 7am so pick it up on the way into work. Otherwise I get it sent to work who are normally pretty good - it's that or drive to the nearest depot for other companies which is normally Cov or Birmingham I believe :s
