I'll try to keep this one short...
Picky, His Ma, His Sister and moi went to Carnon Downs garden centre a few weeks back and had a quick peek at their out door garden table sets. Our budget was around £250.
Upon having a nosey we spotted a fantastically gorgeous table with a stand up price tag on it saying "Berkshire set, reduced from £350 to £299".
BARGAIN! We picked up the tag, took it to the furniture man, pointed out the table and asked whether it included the chairs. He said yup - we enquired about stock and there were only a handful left as a "new range" was due out so it was discontinued.
We ummmed and arred about it and being in Cornwall had no way to get it back to Exeter so left it that day saying we'd be back. A week later we sent Alan (Pickys Dad) down to get it and once again, he went up to the same extending table we saw, picked up the price tag from it, went to the furniture bloke, confirmed all the details and then paid for it on his card. Apparently they were very helpful and helped carry all the goods out to his car and stack it in. Superb.
This weekend, Alan brings the table and chairs up to us. We bring it round the back, open the box and low and behold... it's a completely different table (much smaller and not extendable).
So, obviously we pack it away, plonk it in the shed and Picky then calls Carnon Downs up when I was at work to inquire about it all.
His response (after much of a discussion): "I'm sorry, you signed in to a contract saying it was _that_ table you wanted and that's the one we've got. The only thing we can do is give you credit vouchers".
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?!?! When I got back from work I was THE FUMEMEISTER! I couldn't believe it! Apparently they couldn't explain why the label had been on the wrong table TWICE, but I believe they never admitted to having it on the wrong table either.
So today, I call up Trading Standards. After a lengthy discussion (with a somewhat stroppy plonker) I am advised to call them and say that due to misrepresenting the item and confirming it twice by person they have misled us/given us a misleading statement thus meaning we are entitled to a full refund or they should honour their original contract (ie swap for the table they had the tag advertising in the first place).
If they don't act on that, I have been told to write a letter explaining the situation and what Trading Standards (or rather "Consumer Direct") have said and request the above.
If that fails, it could then be taken to court
I have called them and the furniture manager is going to call me back. I hope I can arrange something over the phone as I really don't want to have to put it all in writing and go down that route.
So BLOOMING annoying though. They're well out of place here - with 5 witnesses to the item being falsely advertised and two confirmations by their members of staff that it is the item for sale... how dare they only want to give us credit vouchers!
