View Full Version : Somehow, I am not dead.

Yesterday in the office we were having a big long discussion which managed to encompass many strange and unconnected topics. It was fun.
One of the things we discussed was young Kevin who, being a numpty, is currently banned from driving for getting caught over the limit.
Part of his ban includes having to attend a course about drink driving and the dangers of alcohol. For this he gets homework.
Included in the homework are sheets about what constitutes a unit of alcohol, how many units certain things contain, and also a fantastic chart which shows the effects of a certain number of units.
Levels of note are:
0 Units - No risk
2 Units - Increased risk
5 Units - 5xChance of accident (legal limit!)
6 Units - 7xChance of accident
8 Units - Impulsive
10 Units - Aggressive
11 Units - 25xChance of an accident
12 Units - Double vision, memory loss
19 Units - Possible unconsciousness
25 Units - Oblivion/coma
31 Units - Death possible
So I had a look at all this and decided to figure out what the effects of my usual Saturday night in were.
We start with 8 pints of 4% lager at 2.3 units a pint.
Already we're at 18.4 units. Allegedly I am possibly unconscious. Funny how after that I carry on...
1 bottle of white wine, about 11-12% so another 9 units.
Hmmm 27.4 units... Oblivion/coma time? nope, now for some more.
1 bottle of red wine, about 14-15% so another 10.5 units.
37.9 units of alcohol!
HOLY **** I AM POSSIBLY DEATH!!!!
Of course, I don't always consume that much alcohol on a Saturday night. Sometimes it's more :p
For reference, and if anyone else wants to figure out if they are also possibly death, then the unit amounts are:
White wine - 9 units a bottle, 2.1 units per 175ml glass, 1.5 units per 125ml glass.
Red wine - 10.5 units a bottls (it doesn't give unit amounts per glass here :/)
Beer, 3.5% - 2 upp (units per pint)
Lager, 4% - 2.3 upp
Premium Lager/Beer/Cider, 5% - 2.8upp
Super strength lager, 9% - 4
Strong Cider, 8.5% - 4.4
Vodka/rum/gin, 37.5% - 0.9 units per 25ml, 1.3 units per 35ml
Whisky/brandy, 40% - 1 unit per 25ml, 1.4 units per 35ml
Happy calculating peoples :D
Possible death at 31 units? What a load of ****e, if thats the case, Ive been dead more times than I can count :p
Made for a good read though, thanks Dym ;)

Doesn't alcohol also leave your blood stream at a rate of about 1 unit per hour?
I assume it's more rapid if you've drunk a lot.
That chart is presumably a worst case as well, so unless you're an 8 stone female with 1 kidney and a failing liver it's probably not very applicable.

Oops.
Forgot to mention that that chart was based on an average 11 stone male.
There's also one for an average 9 stone female with different TERROR levels.
The chart, of course, takes no account of alcohol tolerance, or lack thereof. I've heard of people managing 20+ pints without being dead. That thanks to a considerably overside liver it seems, which might not bode well for later life. :dunno:
Now, if I tried that, I really would be dead. ;D
I think you got to factor TIME into the equation.
That is x units in the blood at one given time, not x units drunk over the course of the entire night. Considering the Liver can remove 1 unit an hour, may be more if you have a larger liver being male...etc, the number of units is not the amount you've drunk since you started.
If you drink 8 pints in 1 go in the space of 2 minutes, then Possible unconsciousness or coma would be very much possible.
I hardly drink these days. Only if I go into town which is once or twice a month.
an average 9 stone female
*mutter grumble sulks* :(
The amount I drink has gone up over the past couple of years but I think that is more because I have stopped worrying that every sip of alcohol will turn me into my mother. There is a difference between fancying a drink and needing a drink.
i think i've been dead 3 times this month....

The body destroys alcohol at a fixed rate for each person and CANNOT be sped up by cold shower, black coffee, exercise or even patent 'cures'.
One unit of alcohol takes AT LEAST 1 hour to be eliminated by the body
So by those guidelines then my Saturday evening drinking over the span of approximately 9 hours means that there would still have been 28(ish) units of alcohol left in my blood stream when I went to bed...
But that's not as much fun :p

Most alcohol I've consumed in 6 hours is 28 pints of McEwan's Export = 72.8 units - say hi to the Scottish corpse :p (I was about 13 stone at the time).
That chart thingummy is clearly wrong - there are factors that can affect alcohol metabolism (if that's the right word). Though the point about external factors not being relevant is fair enough.
Yeah I've definitely died several times over if 31 units is that. :p
I had a cool spreadsheet at Uni which plotted your blood alcohol over time, I'll see if I can find it
My chart probably goes
0 Units - LOL
2 Units - LOL LOL
5 Units - LOL LOL LOL
8 Units - HA HA LOL HA
10 Units - HA HA LOL HA HA LOL
19 Units - LOLHALOLOLOLHAHAHLOL
25 Units - Sharking
31 Units - Bed time
I'd have used a somewhat different measure of success with you tbh. :p ;D
You got me sorted out and in a taxi pretty well at the end of an evening, and Dym got me bedded down for a night, so neither of you do that badly. ;D

Dym, I thought you were Jarp's bitch
14 on my last smashed moment.
12 Units - Double vision, memory loss
19 Units - Possible unconsciousness
Didn't have either of those... why isn't 'sporadic throwing up' on the list?! :p

Dym, I thought you were Jarp's bitch
So did Jarp ;)
I am a complete light weight when it comes to drinking now. A smashed session for me would be about 4-6 pints or a bottle of vino
My plan, it functioned perfectly. ;D ;D :p
0 units a week \o/ :D :p
Though seriously in a day & night before I've had well over 31 units - that was a good 10 years or so ago.
I guess we're all superhuman? ;) Clearly people with larger framed bodies and more active metabolism will be able to absorb the alcohol more actively and easily. I seldom drink now, but when I treat myself to a glass of wine I don't even notice the effect it has.
No risk since November here :p
But I've never really been much of a drinker.

I think my last "binge" (I wouldn't call it too much of a binge, more a day off of work :p)
was about 35 units, but it was spread over 12 hours from about 1 till 1.
11st man is average? Cool I'm 37% more than average :D
I'm almost an average man :(

I can Honestly say (as far as GD permits me) that Death is Nothing to worry about. All the hurt & pain kind of washes away & you feel like you are floating. Then some no it all doctor/nurse type Zapps the crap out of you & you start Hurting again

I need to go get some pies down me :)
They're called love handles for a reason ;)
31 units has been beaten by me on a regular basis. Hell, over the Christmas period / New Year I drank 400 units in 12 days :/
I need to go the gym :(
hehe - well maybe my maths was wrong (i'm over 15st).
It doesn't really matter if you are heavy some people are just heavier boned, have more muscle density despite having some bodyfat.

That's what I keep telling everybody - I'm big boned. Also, it's not a beer belly, it's relaxed muscle - a huuuge, very relaxed muscle :p

400 units in 12 days :/
Average of 33 units a day then :p
I've no idea how much i drink as i rarely drink these days it seems, i've probably never died.
37.9 units of alcohol!
HOLY **** I AM POSSIBLY DEATH!!!!
Dym is Schroedingers drinker?
Don't open the (wine) box!
Death - Tall guy, skeletal body, black robe and a scythe. TALKS LIKE THIS. Horse called Binky
Don't eat the Salmon Mousse!

I'm not heavy, i'm underweight, i need to put some muscle on, hence the gym comment.

;D;D
My pint seems to be in a quantum state where it is some combination of full and empty.
Having made a measurement of it I can now confirm that it is empty.

Hmmm, although i've probably "died" a fair few times, that scale seems pretty close for me, i'd say after 20 units i'm probably on my way to getting pretty drunk... Although not unconscious or anything...
Shower time? :p ;)
Best not drop the soap (or is it only Huddy that does that). :p ;)

Hahahahaha, I try not to mention how much I drink beyond a general figure but I've been "possibly dead" so many times it is barely worth calculating. Drinking isn't big, cool or clever but it can't half be fun.
I think I might have been dead last night again. Damn my luck.
I probably hit about 14 units last night - drank more than I had planned but it was cheaper than I thought it was going to be (£1.60 for a pint of doombar). Didn't feel too bad at all - this is probably not a good thing :/

A WHOLE bottle of Bud for me last night .... woo hoo :D
i think i drank the "dead" level there in just sambucca last night. thats ignoring the beer, vodka and jack.
I had two bottles of wytchcraft last night and woke up with a stinking headache. I fail at booze.
I assume you mean wychcraft, you also fail at spelling.
(/Faysh)
:D
I fail at booze.
Me too. I had precisely zero last night and still felt like I was going to die (or at least have some alien parasite explode from my body) this morning. Stupid food. :/
I had two bottles of wytchcraft last night
Yum :) I seem to like lots of the Wychwood ones :)
actually sir, I rock at spelling. What I fail at is remembering how the name was written on the bottle.
Pedant.
yeah but dude, you're not human are you? All that power hiding in your beard and invisible glasses doesn't fool anyone :D

Yes but we aren't telling you what it is.
It all comes flooding back. Did the lack of a beard surprise people too?

Hmmm..
Can't quite do the voice but I *cough* COULD WORK *splutter* *cough* on it.
Hrm, where do I fall on that chart? Well, kind of hard to fall anywhere on it since I haven't had anything to drink in 14 years...
Hell, I walk PAST an open bottle of beer I get light headed!!

Hmmmmmm I cannot for the life of me remember last night, thought its probably suitable for this thread, i don't feel all that bad though strangely. We started with a centurion, we finished at 150 shots (me and a friend last man standing but ran out of beer eventually). Then i went out had a drink and woke up this morning =/ I'd rather not do that tbh...
Centurions pwn. The first time I ever did one it properly messed me up but then the second time I was prepared and so just sailed through it. :)
LeperousDust
18-03-2008, 22:08
I think its the fact i did it before going out =/ Also 150 shots is f****** lot :( (for me!)
Still i actually don't feel all that bad, although i paracetamoled and glucosed up the second i woke up and couldn't remember what happened... That might have helped...

My BBC home page threw up this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7343737.stm) for me today and I found it a good read and actually agreed with the premise behind it which makes it appear that alcohol vendors are indeed forcing more booze down people's throats.
However this quote made me giggle:
There is no doubt at all that many people are drinking significantly more than they realise.
People are aware of units, they want to stay within safe limits, but they are being pushed up way over those limits by just not realising what they are drinking.
I think the industry is being irresponsible and needs to put its house in order.
That middle line is hilarious! I know very few people that are completely aware of the amount of units in anything they drink or how they all add up over the night.
In fact, given popular current depictions of how people go out and drink until they fall down (which is not actually that uncommon) I'd be impressed at how many people could spell "alcohol" at the end of a binge night out :p

In fact, an excerpt from discussing this with Jarp...
Paul / Garp says (08:17):
how many people do you know of actually know how many units are in a pint of beer
Paul / Garp says (08:17):
or a glass of wine
Paul / Garp says (08:17):
or jd & coke :p
Dymetrie says (08:17):
I do :D
Paul / Garp says (08:17):
yeah, but you're a freak :p
Dock workers 30-odd years ago used to regularly down 30 pints just at lunchtime, and more in the evening, at least according to one doctor...
I'd be flat under the table after a fifth of that! But then I average about 1 pint a month :P
I feel dead...
Note to self - don't drink pretty coloured shots esp when the colours are in layers in the glass... (still not sure what it was either)
I've really hurt my coccyx...ouch
