View Full Version : My workplace is falling apart…

Basically, we were bought out last October by a large accounting firm, and since then, morale in the office has plummeted.

I am still the newest person here, and only having been here for 8 months, I've seen 6 people leave. It may as well be one a month. And like I said, I am still the newest one here, this means although people are leaving, they aren’t hiring anyone new. The workload now has to be stretched between 10 or so people as opposed to the 20 it should be. Of the 6 people that have already left, 5 gave one of their reasons for leaving as one of the managers. She is power mad, sarcastic, and just generally a nasty person. She has made every person in the office cry at least once (except me, we dont have that many run ins, and Ill sodding well stand up for myself, she has told me to **** off before, and Ive told her to **** off straight back)

Now, I shouldn’t be moaning, because I am not actually an accountant, I just run the payroll bureau, therefore none of these changes really affect me, but its hard seeing how down everyone is. I am in my own little office, which I actually prefer, but it means I cant see everything that’s happening, I have to catch up with news in the kitchen every morning ;)

Two of my better friends here have both handed their notices in, one leaves this Thursday, another leaves on the 31st. And another is currently job hunting.

Just needed to rant I guess :(

Keep your chip up Betty.

Our company was bought out/merged with one of our competitors and the last year has seen unprecedented change all across the piece. A bit like Tak, the atmosphere has been horrible, sniping, back stabbing were the order of the day. Luckily we are coming into a period of being settled now as all the new structures are in place.

well the inspection is over with now...just have to wait a few weeks/months for the report to come out :/ Still losing staff left, right and centre - we are getting some back but not at the trained level we need to met requirements :/

sorry - didn't mean to hijack :o

Really not good when that happens. Most of my mates have now left the company that I work for. I'm waiting till April 10th before I make my decision, the company is well aware of this.

It does seem from where I am sitting that the bigger accounting firm wanted the business but not the staff? I have had a manager like that in the past. She was careful to only kick off when other junior staff was around. Her mistake was kicking off at me on voicemail on a Sunday. Replayed to senior staff on Monday morning on speaker phone with her sitting there, she didn't last long.

^^^I like your thinking ;D

They have said time and time again, they want to improve things, but nothing seems to be changing, not from everyone elses POV anyway.

Personally, I am getting on fine with the new boss, he's a really nice guy and he does help me when I ask for it, maybe he fancies me ;D Nah, I just dont think he realised the amount of crap that was going on here before he started, and its getting on top of him now he is in charge.

Something has just pissed everyone off though, a new guy is starting soon, he will be starting at Manager level, yet he is less qualified than some of the juniors here, and to top it off? He is a good mate of the boss :/ Always a case of, its not *what* you know, its *who* you know :(

Thats **** Betty. :(

We got bought out by the Dragon last year and am yet to see what good things it has brought to the company... a lot of my friends have left... and the bonus structure has changed.

Am going to see what happens in April re: Pay and if I don't get enough I will have to leave as my mortgage will go up.

I think 4 years here is enough of a sentence anyway. But its the little things that are keeping me here.

BB x

Ive always said once I get to the point where I dread coming to work, and I feel sick just thinking about it, its time to leave. But luckily, I am not there yet, but some people here most certainly are :(

I am effectively my own boss here, I am left to my own devices, and I really like that, its just a shame my best mates here are leaving :(:(

Everyone here seems a bit unhappy at the moment as well. There's no reason why they should be upset by anything because it's a good company on paper, but I'm off soon as well. Just don't seem to enjoy working here any more.

Interestinly, on the flip side.
OUR organisation will be outsourcing over 50% of it IT staff (including me!) in the next 18months.
I am quite happy in my job, and kind of look forward to the change. I have beeing with this company for 13 years now.

13 years? I suppose by todays standards, thats quite impressive :)

The longest I have stayed in a job, I think is about 2.5 years, I left each one for different reasons, the best one being (on my CV) as Work vs Workload ratio ;) Was a shame, because that was one of the most chilled out places Ive ever worked, wear what you want to work, freebies from suppliers, lovely people :( I almost miss it :p

I've gone past 15 years at my place, and if you add on placement and temp work it's nearer 17, but I'm not even close to the longest-serving employee (27 years).

In the software industry that's a rare thing indeed (though there are of course obvious candidates at Microsoft and Apple).

Thats the thing about liking your job though.. I like it here and thus stayed.

Work is not always about the money :D

Work is not always about the money :D

I loved working at the college, the pace of work was great, the staff nice (for the most part) the students not too much of a pain in the neck... however I wasn't earning a living wage, and when I was in a serious relationship a few years ago and I was seriously considering marriage, I came to realise some things needed to change, I needed to up my game and get into a better paid job or I'd never be able to support a couple, or even do my fair share of supporting a couple. 3 years down the line my pay has doubled, and I'm more than capable of that now. Not so convinced I'll stick out this particular role, but it'll give me the skill set to move into roles that may well be a half-way house between the two :)

I thought you meant literally, ours is actually falling apart in places for some reason. Whenever work needs doing, they always seem to hire the cowboy's that get shown on watchdog :/

its good that you enjoy what you do, to me thats as important if not more so than money now. But I guess I am getting on a bit and have the things I want in life.

I know you have plans to do other things, and I really hope they succeed, but as always ... be prepared (not literally) for it to fall flat on its arse.. it could happen. Always have something in reserve when going out on your own venture.

Aw Kitten :(

My underling Amy has an interview tomoro and is off work until next Wednesday now, she is sick with worry about this place and has apparently lost weight through stress and its now effecting her homelife. I dont blame her for wanting to get out, but she said she knows of 4 other people who are actively job hunting. We are seriously going to be left with nobody :(
