View Full Version : SAUSAGE ROLLS!!!!!

So on Thursday I suddenly had a craving for sausage rolls... This was somewhat exascerbated by a certain person (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, DAMN YOU!) and decided that as I couldn't get any fresh sausage rolls anywhere near my office, nor could I get some shipped in (I sent my boss a text message asking her to bring me some but she was rubbish and failed), that I would have to deal with it myself...

I found this (http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/bigsausagerolls_86258.shtml) recipe on t'interweb and it sounded ok. After buying primary ingredients then I checked the cupboard for other stuff and found that I had no tabasco... So I replaced it with garlic (mmm... garlic... *drools*).

My recipe list was as thus:

Shedloads of pork sausagemeat
Shedloads of puff pastry (which was prepared by using flour and a wine bottle to roll it out)
MUSHROOMS!
GARLIC!
Worcester Sauce
Thyme
Black pepper

I fried off the garlic and finely chopped mushrooms in butter while I had my way with the pastry using a wine bottle. Dumped everything (apart from the pastry) in a bowl and mushed it all up together and then put it into the pastry I had carefully rolled out and sealed it with some egg along the edge (as instructed) and brushed (no brush, so forked) the rest of the egg on top of the rolls...

Here come the pictures...

Ready to cook:

While Dym was making his I took a drive to Tesco to buy the primary ingredients to make the same thing.

However, while I was there I dropped into 'meh, can't be arsed' mode and instead bought a packet of Ginsters which are now in the oven.

I now regret my decision and perhaps I'll go back tomorrow :)

Don't worry Feek, I was going to make Richie L's chorizo carbonara but instead of the kitchen I found myself standing in the kebab shop asking for a large doner and chips please mate.

Good god they look good. Need a pic of the inside once cooked to ensure complete droolage.

I love SRs but am always suspicious about what goes into them so tend not to indulge. Think we'll be trying this one out :D

I shall take a photo of the spares once I heat them up tomorrow, but rest assured the innards did most greatly rock :)

Good call Lostiuskatius, I didn't go to Tesco yesterday but I did today and I've just finished a session in the kitchen.

Hot Cross Buns are made and ready to take to work with me tomorrow and the sossie rolls are in the oven now. I don't have a tray big enough to hold four of them so I've had to use two trays with two each.

20 minutes to go. I'm scared.

The kids and I have just troughed three of them and I'm saving the last one to take to work tomorrow. How I'm going to manage leaving it here all night without eating it, I do not know!

It was absolutely gorgeous, the kids who normally will turn their noses up at mushrooms both really loved them. I think I'll have another go next week but using some more substantial sausage meat from the local butchers :)

You don't really get an idea of size until you compare them with normal sized sausage rolls and, erm, a mobile phone.

I want a taste report!

I'm making more later today when the sausage meat defrosts. Going to use slightly less butter in the original stage though.

The amount of pastry in the recipe is bang on, I've been buying the pack of two sheets from Tesco and then cutting them in half.

First time I did them there was a lot of oil flowing out during cooking, I took that as being the butter that I fried the mushrooms in so this time I used roughly half the recipe suggested and didn't have that at all.

Looking good BB x, hope they taste good :)

Thanks Mr Feek! :D

I just used a whole slab of Jus Roll pastry... think it was 50g too much :/

Don't like wasting stuff though... yours look really professional :)

The fat may have come from the meat aswell?

There isn't a sausage roll in this thread that I would glance at twice before devouring. Good shows all round!

Sam's remind me of the bit in Friends where Joey thinks the penis-shaped cake looks more delicious than the rabbit-shaped cake! ;D

I've only ever used plain sausage meat out the pack and you get no oil come out. Must be from the butter and yeah, 50g's is quite a lot :D

:(

I must've either used rubbish sausage meat from Asdas or... hmm I didn't use that much butter with the mushrooms... hhmmm

Sam, I LOVE the fact that you can accidentally make sausage rolls look like something that you'd see if you paused the screen on a porno ;D

You should have seen what my snowman accidentally turned into when I tried to rebuild him :o I may be persuaded to post pics :o

Not enough egg for sealage?

Too much meat?

How is it possible that your first attempt is infintely better than the most recent?

I wouldn't go that far, they're both pretty shoddy :/

This time I was using different sausagemeat and different pastry...

Probably because I'm just not much good on the aesthetics side of things, although I'm sure someone will be able to comment on how they tasted...

Holy Thread Revival!

Made these ones today. The sausagemeat filling is accented with garlic, black pepper and wholegrain mustard.

I enjoyed the mutant ones and have saved the sensible, neat-looking ones for dinner this evening :)

Wow they look awesome, nothing better than home made sausage rolls and so easy to make.

Lets get some hot weather back, I like cooking for picknicks, it's just a collection of "naughty" food.
