Having not used Winamp for years, I decided to install it since I'd just re-installed Windows on my gaming/media rig. It appears to come with a new-fangled (to me :p) thing called 'Winamp Remote' which, when activaed, allows me to access my music/video collection from pretty much any device which has a decent interweb connection and a browser. This means I can listen to/watch anything from my collection on PCs, Wiis, 360s, PS3s, phones etc.

I've just set it up and have been listening to 'Never Take Me Alive' by Spear of Destiny on my new mobile phone (Samsung G800) over 3G to test it - it works great.

I'm well impressed

Anybody else use it or anything similar?

Is that basically a front end/rebranding of shoutcast merged with a control interface?

One thing you can do with WinAmp thats quite funky is the web interface. Change your tracks from anywhere in the world over the internet :D I used either my PDA or my phone as a remote for my tunes during house parties etc. You can even queue up tracks and stuff remotely.

I've dabbled with a web interface plugin before. Sometimes I'd open up the URL and post it on forums when bored so that people could select music for me to listen to :p

Never having used shoutcast, I couldn't really say.

Basically you set up what is presumably some sort of server application which you can access remotely through a web browser (with a login, obviously) and pretty much see exactly what you see when you open up Winamp on the local machine. You can then play the content through the browser on the remote machine.

I don't pretend to know how it works but it works and I like it :D
