Shoes... Mens shoes.
Given the trainer thread, I thought I'd ask this question.

How many pairs of shoes is too many pairs of shoes for a man to own?

I'm not going to reveal how many I have at the moment...but I think it may be too many.

I know nothing about men's shoes. I personally keep pictures of my shoe collection on my phone so i can look at them, they never fail to make me happy. I have about 20 pairs of shoes, of varying price but as long as they are pretty they can cost £5 or £150 i don't care.

(I have a feeling that a fair few people will be unsurprised that i was the first reply)

Acceptable shoes for a man to own:

Dress shoes, for those times you need to look your best
Work shoes, whatever these may be
Weekend shoes, for, well, whenever you aren't at work
Training shoes, for running, football etc.
Dirty shoes, for doing mucky things. These are probably an old pair of weekend or training shoes.

Any more than that is officially not required and totally homogay.

I never have more than 3-4, wear them till they fall apart, get new pair.

Occasionally borrow a mates pair if they suit better :p

I have quite a few pairs but only regularly use two pairs. I really ought to throw out the old manky pairs. The rest are either walking boots I very rarely use or new pairs I've not even worn once yet.

Spot on there, more dirty shoes are acceptable but only if you can't be bothered to throw them away

I'm probably safe then, since the new (unworn) shoes are in original boxes shoved as far out of sight as possible. :)

Been wearing Converse for years. Have a black pinstripe pair for work, black denim for posh, white leather for the gym when using the rowing machine or bike, and several very old and tatty ones that I've had about 10 years ago. Even got some custom made ones done about 2 years ago.

Also have some of their limited edition ones from their Project Red range. *mmmmm - all red*

Emo - they all wear Vans or DM's around here. Usually fakes too.

I have:

1 pair of converse all stars, in navy blue.
1 pair of black shoes, relatively smartish but not particularly so, can be used for general work wear and socialising.
1 pair of smart black shoes to go with suits and whatever.

That's it. Wear them until they fall apart. My general black shoes are a new pair from a couple of weeks ago due to the previous pair having about a millimetre of sole left on them, after a good 3 - 3 1/2 years of wearing them.

I am 100% converse-less. Never even seen one 'for real' (other than on people's feet which I don't count).

I had a pair of converse, i used them for about 6 months realised they were utterly useless for walking as they give no support (they were sports shoes - made to be flexible) not water resistant (not a good thing in Scotland) and made my feet cold. Worn them when i learnt to drive as they were quite good for that then never wore them again. Gifted them to my little sister when she started learning, she has done exactly the same now she has passed.

I'm deeply saddened by the number of members confessing to having converse things

That's all i have to say on the matter!

I never used to think much of them or see the point in buying any, then a previous gf bought a pair for me a couple of years ago and I was converted.. there is just something remarkable about them. The soles seem / feel so thin, yet they're remarkably rugged and durable.

I broke mine, there were holes in the sides within the short time i owned them. But then again i destroy trainers of any kind, there is just something about my feet. I wear away the inside of the heels and the insoles first then it really goes downhill...

1 pair smart brown
1 pair everyday brown

1 pair of dress shoes (slip ons) for use with penguin suit
1 pair smart shoes for meetings
1 pair semi smart for everyday work (used to be but have been well worn)
1 pair reinforced toe cap (for bovvering ;))
1 pair walking shoes
2 pair trainers (both trashed)
1 another pair of walking shoes (cheap ones, to spare the good ones)
1 another cheap pair that are still covered in mud from quad biking last summer
1 pair rugby boots (servicable)
1 pair rugby boots (beyond repair, but ready for emergency use)
1 pair sandals

11 pairs. More than I would've guessed once I come to write it down.
I have a bad habit of trashing shoes within 2 months of owning them though so I generally need backups for when a pair fall to bits.

Hadn't really thought about it before...

1 pair River Island everyday use.
1 pair brown Italian leather fashion shoes.
1 pair standard black leather.
1 pair black leather ankle boots.
2 pairs of running shoes which I alternate.
1 pair slippers.
1 pair Reebok sandals.
1 pair Salomon walking boots.
1 pair white fashion trainers that I've worn about twice (can't remember the brand).

So about 10 I guess, of which three or four are worn regularly, the rest being for quite specific events/times of year.

You can really, and this coming for someone with a lot of shoes. There is only so many you will ever wear, you get to a point where you realise you haven't worn that pair in the corner in over a year. That is when it is time to stuff them on ebay and start building up the funds for the new pair, rinse and repeat (although not the shoes they tend not to like that). Its like a life cycle.

Shall I list all my shoes? Actually no on the other hand I had best not :p More shoes than I have would make you homogay, so for now you are safe :)

As for the Converse things I am fairly sure I had a pair of them as rollerboots when I was 12. Not owned a pair since, I'm not sure I have clothes that would look right with them now.

I'd never realised before but I may qualify as homogay then as I've got 2 pairs of newish trainers for when I'm not in work, about 4-5 pairs of knackered trainers that I alternate between for sport and just general lounging about, 2 pairs of shoes for work/going out, a pair of boots for walking or general outdoors jobs, a pair of sandals for the rare occasions my feet see daylight and a pair of slippers.

Then they'd probably fit you then. Alas I love them too much :p

This is where having a sister in America helps. Get her to buy them and I pick them up when I see her. In fact, as she is back home this summer I best get ordering.
