Last night when I got up for work I discovered my youngest cat had fallen asleep in the bathroom and never woke up. Absolutely NO idea what happened to him. No signs of distress or discomfort. In fact I thought he was asleep (not unusual for him to sleep on the bathroom floor). So I said hi, but he didn't even wag an ear at me. So reached down and pet him and he was cold.

The hardest part was hugging him inside my jacket so my son wouldn't see him. I'm not entirely sure how he would have handled the idea through his autism, and I wasn't going to leave for work with him in a distressed state and my wife going to bed soon. So I bundled Smokey up in my jacket, took him outside and buried him. I had to make sure I put a couple cinder blocks over the grave so the dogs don't dig him up.

And now I feel like total **** because I just discovered I don't even have a single picture of him. :(

So sorry. :( Glad it seems to have been peaceful - maybe he even was asleep on the bathroom floor when it happened.

RIP. :(

A horrible experience but with the consolation (if that's the right word - probably not) that it seems to have been peaceful.

Oh that is so sad. I'm so sorry. It sounds like a peaceful way to go though.

RIP Smokey.

Ah that's awful, especially for your son. Really sorry to hear you had to kick the weekend off with such bad news.

There is an upside though, you do get to pick out a kitten. :D May I suggest I Bengal?

I'm so SO sorry, it's awful when a cat dies especially if it's completely unexpected. Sending out *hugs* across the ocean to you :(

It's not like when a car dies and you get to go and get another one. That seems like a terribly insensitive thing to say.

Sorry to hear about your cat, Darrin. Charlotte, the bunnies and I send our love to you and your family :)

Aww sorry to hear that - it's never nice when a member of the animal family passes on. :(

If my car dies, I fix it.

Being a cat owner, I think I'd always have to own one so I'd go and get another in the sad event of it passing on. My intention wasn't to twist the knife, hence my earlier words of sympathy that you neglected to quote in your reply. :p

Randal, I understood what you meant. But we still have the other seven kitties to take care of and love, so we won't be getting another any time soon.

Unless a stranded kitten shows up at the side of the road again...

And thanks for all the kind words, folks. He really was a great kittie. A big, grey softy that would love you back twice as much as you did him.

RIP Smokey. I know how it feels when a cat dies. Cleo died when I was at Uni. Used to imagine seeing her in the corner of my eye walking into my flat. :(

Lo and behold, I go outside to check on what my two dogs are barking at and there's a tuxedo cat up one of my trees!! I got out the ladder and got him down, brought him in to get him warm (the tops of his ears have been frost bitten) and get him some food and water.

He's currently investigating the house and getting hissed at by all the other cats. Not sure if he's going to be staying or going to a friend's house or not, but so far my son has named him Flash because of the little bit of white fur on his right ear. No idea why that's significant, but that's the thinking of a 13 year old autistic boy...

Now you just KNOW that you're going to keep the little mite!

Especially after doing a couple simple tests and discovering that he's deaf!!

Poor wee mite. The rest of the brood are just going to have to get over themselves and get along with him!!

Eh?

Catching him while he's looking away and clapping my hands about 6 inches behind his head. My wife was looking at him at the time and he didn't even blink. Every other one of my cats will at least sag their ears, if not turn around to see what all the commotion is about.

He doesn't even perk up and look when you rattle the food dish, and yet if he's looking at you and you touch it, he's all over it like he's been starved for months.

Various other things that lead me to honestly believe he's as deaf as a post. :(

So does my Dad whenever we suggest he might be going deaf.

Wasn't funny the first time, and now several thousand times later even less so!

Indeed. Looks like fate has delivered a new kitty in need of TLC right to your door step (or tree) :)

Fate is a master at doing that. I've actually been banned by some local rat rescues from wanting any more rats as 3 times now I've thought seriously about it and 3 times there have been mass-rescues within 5 days :o
