I had a few hours to blow today so I thought I would have a nose at EVE.

I've done the tutorial and I feel very lost, I followed instructions to get to another 'agent' but my ship isn't big enough to complete the mission he wants me to do so I'm doing a bit of mining. I do understand that the complexity and being emersed is kind of the point but if I have to mine stuff for weeks to get anywhere at all I think its going to get a bit repetitive and dull, any tips?

Its a bit like going to work in some ways

The thing is, was it an enjoyable afternoon?

I saw this posted somewhere yesterday....

... and I chuckled.

Mining? Isn't it a game?

I dunno about that, I like to spend an hour or two playing a game to kill some fools or race some fools, not sit there mining. :p

EVE is something I see people at LANs firing up now and then and I always end up watching them for five minutes then wandering off in a confused daze. It does look like one of the most complicated games ever conceived.

I've also asked EVE players what it's all about but I either end up with my brain trying to explode or I get cryptic responses such as the above. :p :)

Every time this topic arises I think 'is this something I could do?', which usually gets followed swiftly with ':dunno:' :)

Copied and pasted my responce from another forum where a member asked about Eve a few days ago

I have a couple of friends who play it extensively and they love it.

I have a few married/co-habiting friends who were banned from playing it by partners or quit as they were at risk of being forced to sleep on the sofa (permanently).

My experience is slightly more limited, played it for a couple of months a couple of years back and was really enjoying it up until the point some chap with a stupidly powerful ship destroyed my ship and all my cargo that I'd just invested all my money in. If he'd been pirating I wouldn't have minded too much but he was sitting between a couple of major gates just out of range of the Police killing all the ships that came through for ****s and giggles. I cancelled my account 10 minutes later.

Because my friends were playing it when I joined I was able to bypass the boring mining phase and start trading (on my own) and pirating (with them) pretty much straight away as they gave me money to buy a good newbie ship and pointed out a couple of good trading routes. Even two years ago I thought that there were too many well established members for a new player to make much of an impact without dedicating their life to the game so god knows what it's like now. It's also worth baring in mind that like me after 2 months of play some complete tit can reset you all the way back to zero.

Basically unless you can dedicate a hell of a lot of time to the game I wouldn't bother, it's really not a game you can pick up for a couple of hours a couple of times a week.
