Quite cool but awkward this.

Just got a chip and pin card reader thing (looks like a small calculator) from Nationwide. The idea is that for certain transactions online and on internet banking, you have to put you card in the reader, which generates a code. This is then used to validate the transaction.

First I've heard of this and it'll be a pain if I'm not at home and want to move money around, but at least it's extra protection.

Intelligent Finance are using a mobile phone based system, I think because they are Internet based they are confident that all their users have a mobile. Its good they offer an added layer of security though :)

I've got a IF account as well. I move a standing order of money out of my main current account that my wages go into an IF one that my bills get paid from.

I got screwed the other day because I wanted to change something but they had my old mobile number. Always a good excuse to listen to a girls sexy Edinbrough accent though ;)

Having been frauded for the second time today (why on earth would I want a Medion PC) I fully support security initiatives, so long as they don't break my account consolidation (which, ironically, is done by Egg - with whom both fraud events also happened).

PS - they declined the transactions this time - dormant card, so it was obvious.

Leon's had one of these for a while with Barclays. Seems to work quite well.

Got one with Natwest, seems fine now I got setup with a card that works with it. Heard Nationwide are doing it too but not got a reader yet myself, my Grandad's had one for months.

I carry that calculator thing with me on holiday - it's a pain when I'm at work though and I need to do some urgent things. It's great for security and everything, but they won't send you a second one (well Barclays won't).

What if you lose the one you have?

I've got one from Natwest, and I quite like it. You dont have to use it for all transactions, but things like adding/removing payee's, setting up/cancelling standing orders etc. Only once have I been inconvenienced by it and I'll live with that for the extra security it brings :)

I'm with NatWest and haven't got mine yet. Anyone know why? :(

I've not had one from Natwest either, despite buying loads of stuff online and using my online account almost everyday. I guess you have to phone up or go into a branch.

Major bumpage....but for those of you with Natwest, you can order your card reader online in the admin page (I think it was). I've got two now, one for home and one for work :)

I was at a friends a while ago and needed to transfer £600 to him to order my TV, couldn't do it because I didn't have my sodding card reader.

Luckily we ordered it on his credit card in the end, so we had a couple of days till I went home.

Agree that it's a pain in the arse really. But if they say you need them then I guess we don't have much choice.

I just got one from Barclays. Will is that true? This is exactly the kind of thing I am likely to stand on one night after a few too many sherberts, I'll go mad if they don't give me another. It's a cheap ass piece of plastic, it can't cost more than £2/3 per unit.

They missed a trick with these little things by not adding a calculator to them too. Would have been handy.

Have you used it yet? Did you sign for it when it was delivered? If not, you can just phone them up in a few days and say you never received it.....

I had a Barclays one which caused so much inconvenience I got it cancelled. The only issue now is I cannot access online banking at all because I've requested my details to be sent many times over the past 5-6 months and only received one code which didn't work. With it being a student account I withdrew the max overdraft I could kept in savings and just use a current account for banking now.

To be honest as annoying as they are sometimes I'd rather have the hassle with the security than without.

I had huge delays actually being able to use mine (only the joint bills account had a compatible card and it took about 6 weeks to get a pin after they sent me a new card and no pin) but was able to use the phone system in the interim which had a real person, speaking english, and was fairly quick to connect.

That's with natwest, still not got one for my other accounts yet but if you do need to transfer the phone guys can do it with a couple of digits /charts from your pin/pw and the card number.
