View Full Version : WRT54G version 5
I've heard these are bad puppies, but my order from amazon sent me a v5 - curse their efficiency!
Does anyone have one of these? Should I hunt around for a version 4 and try and swap them in a highstreet shop? I'm not fussed about installing 3rd party firmware, but I hear the actual hardware in a v5 is a downgrade from a v4???
The hardware is only a downgrade in as much as you can't whack most of the 3rd party firmwares on. The v5's have less flash and RAM but that isn't a problem for the stock Linksys firmwares.
You'll be hard pressed to find a v4 or lower, but if you get a WRT54GL then you're basically getting a v4. If you can do it, then I'd say do it - the 3rd party firmwares give all sorts of crap that most people won't use, but the extra power from the wireless interface is pretty nice.

know where I might be able to walk in with a sealed v5, and walk back out with another one/upgrade, no problems/questions asked?

Completely agree. /Prods WRT54GS running Sveasoft firmware and slightly boosted wi-fi power. :)

As In here? (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0388781069.115572236 7@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddiijmgjfgcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=250537&category_oid=) Reckon PC world would allow an upgrade?
My wireless adapters are 54g ones - that wouldnt matter would it?
Although - question, why is this (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1001356204.115572250 3@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfeaddiikemkjfcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=852034&category_oid=) a similar price?
I doubt PC World or any other company will be too willing to help you out there. Can't you send the one you have back to Amazon and order a GL elsewhere?
The v5 GS has been around for several months so I'd expect most companies will have them in stock now rather than v4's.
Think the GS is old hat now, but that's a damn good combo deal you found there. No probs running at 54g - that's exactly what I do.
Quoted from Sveasoft forums:
The new WRT54G V5's have been neutered internally compared to their predecessors and have half the RAM and flash memory. They have also redone the OS to something called VxWorks, which has very little power or flexibility and cannot be customized like Linux.
We may get the stripped version of Talisman called Talisman/Micro running on these at some point but they will never be able to run the full version. There is also no possibility of offering expansion via downloadable packages.
My recommendation is to return any WRT54G V5's and purchase a WRT54GS V4 or, if you can find one, a WRT54G V4 instead.
To date we have supported Linksys hardware exclusively. We will expand firmware support and core development to routers by manufacturers other than Linksys due to this change in their hardware and product strategy.
Good luck. :(

Why is the combo cheaper than the router alone?!?!

Think I may get the combo then, and send the other router back to amazon - just gotta pay the postage :(
Oops - I hit quote instead of edit..
Let me know what happens. I may get a spare if they're disappearing.

Ignore me - I got the wrong end of the stick.

Well the guy in the store shrugged his shoulders and said it was a special offer - so I got a spare USB adapter now too. The version I got here is a version 5 still though, so is on VXworks too... I have exchanged pap for pap... ahh well nevermind!
