Ok, yesterday our main family car failed.

My wife was out and as she changed gear but the gear came loose as if there was no guide for 1st, 2nd 3rd gear etc. It's like all wobbly!

She had to get recovery back home but since it's stuck on the drive or should I say the mafia's drive way (don't ask) I can't get it to a garage.

I'm hoping it nothing too serious because the car is getting on a bit and it may not be viable for repair.

What do you think the problem is?

Sounds like what happened to Rob's car - the gear linkage being broked.

I'm a girl who knows nowt about cars though so I could be wrong :(

Should've cost us £125 or sommat but 'luckily' it happened in the garage while the car was in for something else.

Yep, linkage most likely.

Basically it's a couple of rods that transfer the movement you make on the gearstick to the gearbox. Normally there's 2 rods, a push-pull rod (think of that as going from 1st to 2nd) and a left-right rod which is used for going across the gearbox.

Almost certainly gear linkage - usually pretty cheap to repair or replace, just awkward to get to.

haha

Now I've had two mechanics round and both say it could b the linkage or the gearbox. :( Both have said they'll get back to me with a quote but have they? Nope.

Was looking at the S-Max yesterday - looks pretty decent family car.. :)

My parents have one of those, my father is very pleased with it, its a deisel so pretty good on petrol and you can get a load of luggage and the two big dogs in the back so should be fine for your needs, there aren't many cars out there with 3 decent full sized rear seats and loads of luggage space without going for a 4x4 and getting hit with all the associated costs.

Yes they are very spacious. Bigger than the C-Max but don't look like the MPV of the galaxy. Comes with sat nat and bumper detection as standard :)

It's a true statement though - it doesn't use any petrol at all! I wish I could get that sort of economy from my R32 :)

Whar does it take to get a mechanic out. Two guys I've called and not one has got back despite me constantly bugging them. Mafia bloke and I pushed the Galaxy from his drive to ours last night :)

Turns out to be gearbox - Best price I've had is £1,116.00 :(

I'm not sure if this is worth the repair.

 Can you ask around scrappy's? Might be an idea if you can get a recon'd one from somewhere.

Looks like at last we have it fixed. I found a really helpful car mechanic who was willing to search around for second hand gear box. Came in Yesterday and job done (£500 for part and fitting). Cars being MOT's today so hopefully back by the end of the day.

Chaps name is Will and his number is 01245-547050.. Well recomended.

We are seeing two new cars tomorrow so hopefully we'll see the back of this one.
