Just had payday, and I want to buy a decent Digital SLR camera.

Ideally I am looking for a second hand one. So slightly gutted MB beat me to the Second Hand one.

Only looking to spend £250 at most.

Any advice is good advice!

Daz found a good deal on a 400D the other night, they are still about £400 brand new, but then he found a cheaper deal, plus the Canon Cashback etc... came to about £260 I think.

I was pissed off cos I had bought mine brand new :p Want me to ask him where he saw it?

Bloody hell thats good. Basically budget is the Canon 400D or the Nikon well the Nikon is tricky. The d40/d40x/d60 all have this stupid auto focus issue with certain lenses. It means its pointless buying the camera because you'll be limited by lenses and have to upgade asap. So the "budget" Nikon is a d80. Your best bet is to go and try either side, Canon or Nikon and see what feels best to hold and use. Anything from the Nikon d40 to the Canon 1ds m3 will produce brilliant results. Any DSLR by Canon or Nikon is a very good camera. So in short have a play, find a cheap model and buy it.

^^ I'd go with this.

I've had a play with models from both camps myself and know about the silly Nikon issues but can't bring myself to move into the dSLR market (my favourite was a D80 when I was last looking).

Canon do seem to get the better deals though (once you take cashback into account).

It means its pointless buying the camera because you'll be limited by lenses and have to upgade asap.

What it actually means is that there are very few lenses you're likely to want that won't autofocus and so is barely an issue at all really.

If you're limiting yourself to £250 on the body, I reckon you won't really be that fussed whether Nikon's range of £2000 prime lenses will or won't autofocus. There are only a couple of cheaper lenses (like the 50mm) you would miss.
