Helped someone on an automotive engineering course design a modern equilivent of one of these. Carbon fibre monocoque and a 1000cc bike engine were amongst the silliness. A full size model was even built.

He even thought about building a real one - not with the carbon though. Aluminium honeycomb instead - then he found out how much it would cost. :D
