View Full Version : Champions League Final Tonight

So who'll be watching it, what's everyones expectations, who's routing for who?

As a United fan it's definitely squeaky bum time :o

It's not often a Champions League final comes around in the same year as winning the league as well... and to top this year off it's the first ever all English final!

Needless to say I shall be grabbing a few beers and screaming at the TV tonight

Burble

Being a Blues fan I'll be routing for them and hoping to continue where they left off at Stamford Bridge a few weeks back.

Let's just forget about the Premiership shall we? :)

I'll be watching it. As a Liverpool fan, it's going to be a tricky one. Asking who I want to win is like being asked to I want to have my toenails or my fingernails pulled out ;D

Should be a fantastic game as a semi-neutral though.

Edit: I've been leaning towards the blues. I just have a feeling.

I just hope it's not a repeat of last years FA Cup.... "Classic"

I'm actually quite calm about it. We've already won the league, which is the more important one. Tonight will just me a massive bonus when we win it.

Great first half. United deserved to go in with the lead but you cant really take that away from Lamps, bit of luck but that happens.

Still feeling confident though, we were playing positive and creating chances. If I was a blue I'd be worried about Grant apparently not saying a word to anyone when they were down - imo story of his season really, he (as a manager) never has an answer when they go down. Off the top of my head I can only think of one smart substitution he's made this year (Shevchenko when we went to the bridge, unfortunately for us, he was the right man at the right time imo).

Anyway, 45 to go!

I was all over the place during that. Dont know what it was but I had a feeling Ronaldo would miss, but you wouldn't want anyone else to take that pen other than Terry. Just couldn't believe he missed it. After that I thought luck was with us and it seems I was right.

Buzzing now. Need to calm down so I can get some sleep :D

Bloody hell, one hell of a game :D

If only more games were that good I would not only 1. Get a sky sports subscription I would also head to games. Alas a lot don't come close.

Really good game, been a while since i've hurled abuse at the TV. Don't even support either.

Going to get a kickin tomorrow though at work as its a heavily Chelsea dominated office. I didn't realise and said Man U when they asked me earlier ooooops (as a West Ham supporter so hardly going for glory :D )

Bugger.

My thoughts exactly. Been a while since I got into a match that much, excluding England games. I was semi neutral but I have a soft spot for Chelsea and a disliking of Man Utd so I suppose not very neutral ;D
Wish more matches were that enjoyable to watch though :D

Fantastic atmosphere and a brilliant result, easily one of the best games between two English clubs I've seen in a long time.

fantastic showpiece for English club footy.

So long as you ignore the constant diving, the pushing and shoving, the slapping, the hassling of the ref etc. etc. it was brilliant :p

My thoughts too.

That game showed just how good, but also how bad the English game has become. I'm a huge Chelsea fan but it's disgusting how the players surround the referee all the time.

I didn't watch the game as I assumed it would be dull - looks like I ****ed up there :(

Did Drogba spend half the match on his back having tripped over fresh air as usual?

Looking forward to tonights excitement

It was a great match Stan, really really good.

Drogba is nowhere near as much of a diver as he used to be but once you get that reputation it's very hard to get rid of. He did prove a point to Rafa Benitez in the 2nd leg og the match against Liverpool. When he scored he ran half the length of the pitch before celebrating which he did by diving to the ground right in front of the Liverpool bench.

He got his red card for slapping (tapping more like) one of the Liverpool players on the cheek during one of the many times when the Chelsea players had surrounded the ref.

leowyatt
22-05-2008, 08:44
He must have had long arms to slap a Liverpool player :p Didier "Stretch" Drogba :p

Stan_Lite
22-05-2008, 08:45
I don't really follow English football that much and don't see many games but I've seen two Chelsea games this season and in both of them, Drogba's diving was atrocious. I always think it's a shame when really talented players feel they have to resort to diving to win games, I'd rather they relied on their talent instead.

I'm a Celtic fan and I used to get really annoyed at Stilian Petrov. He was one of the most talented players at Celtic for a long time but he used to really **** me off with his diving antics.

Not a great fan of either side but I did want Chelsea to win, for London support.

Great game depite the poor refereee.

25% of Man Utds success is based on either dodgy or biased refereeing and this match wasn't much different.

I did feel sorry for John Terry.. but Analeka was really bothered wasn't he haha

Admiral Huddy

I think even the avid man utd fan would admit that the have their fair share of decision go their way. I counted at least 4 corners that should have gone Chelsea's way that ended up as goal kicks, one man u player should have been off and a high kick that should have been a penalty to Chelsea. There are 3 Man utd fans here (All have never set foot inside Manchester :p ) that do agree.

The Rio/Malouda challenge is here
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fc06qFt-Xdk#GU5U2spHI_4

Haven't got the Rio/Cole challenge yet...

But the linesman flagged it, outside the box... but Cole kept going and the referee played on... Cole then lost the ball and moaned the ref didn't call it.

If Cole would have carried on and got the ball into the net, but the referee had called them back you would still be moaning.

It was a good call IMO, Cole took it almost to the byline before losing the ball... he had a decent run on.

That said I can't believe some people (not just on here just in general) that are finding anything to moan at as an excuse.

It was easily one of the best all English games we've seen in a fair few years, more than lived up to the hype as the "Game of Games" and it could have gone either way.

It had everything a good game should have.
The referee kept his cards in his pocket unless absolutely needed, clearing off the line, balls hitting the post/crossbar, good movement and play from players... it was just overall a really good game.

The high kick where Rio got his foot over Cole's head was outside of the box.

25% of Man Utds success is based on either dodgy or biased refereeing and this match wasn't much different.

The ref was awful both ways.

Chelsea missed out on a few blatant corners yet picked up some absolute peaches of free kicks off of 50/50 challenges or where there was no contact at all. Swings and roundabouts.

I don't think either was particularly advantaged or disadvantaged by the ref overall.

Erm, did you not see him slip over as he took the kick? Not his fault was it? He's Chelsea's best player and for a fan to be slagging him off after missing a penalty is disgusting as far as I'm concerned, especially given how much he puts into his performances every week.

And going by what you say then we may as well scrap penalties as all players should never miss.

Agree with you totally Davey. He slipped JSB unless you were watching a game to us  You seem him slip as his leg goes out to kick the ball not his fault as it had been pelting it down most of the match.

Lots of people mess up their spot kicks, he shouldn't have taken it when he did, the last fella who had his saved should have been there first.

Burble
22-05-2008, 12:55
Had it not been for John Terry then it wouldn't have gone as far as penalties. I think he should be thanked rather than berated.

To say that you'd shoot him or kick the **** out of him just goes to show what's wrong with so many English football fans. It's no wonder they hate us going to away matches in Europe.

divine

It looks to me there that his left ankle starts to go almost right away. When your target area is as small as the one he was aiming at (just inside the post I'd imagine) even the slightest slip would be enough to put him off.

Either way though I don't think he should be berated for it. The world's greatest players have missed penalties worse than that (Roberto Baggio anyone? Has the ball even come down from his kick yet?), so it's harsh to have a go at someone with the bottle to step up to take one, especially after his goal line clearance got them as far as penalties.

Admiral Huddy
22-05-2008, 14:52
I think he scuffs the ground.. looking at the water.. then slips afterwards.

I thought the quality of the penalties was prety goo tbh. Apart Ronaldo wgho had quite a Huddyism. Even Analekas was on target. Pot luck as we found out this year to our cost. :(
