Yes its cheesy as hell, but we love Terry Wogans drunken ramblings. Thats all we watch it for ;D That, and Leons views on Eastern European politics :D

So anyone staying in to watch it? Double D and The Pitches are gracing Chez Lopkat for it, we had such a good time last year, we feel it will become a tradition

I'll be watching it (much to Mic's dismay) :D Last year Phil and Vix were here before/after their holiday (can't remember if it was the outgoing or incoming leg of it) :)

I doubt i'll bother this year, is it later than last year? Because i remember watching it in our dorms last year, and the same time this year most people are (including me) going home about now, so its not so much of a social place, and thats all EuroVision is about getting lashed while laughing at the stupid entries, well apart from Lordi. :)

Mark

All the money comes from four western european states. Ourselves and Germany without fail come bottom. If we pulled out then hopefully the lot would topple like a house of cards. However, suggestions have been made to either to Rickroll the lot of them or send in Mr. Blobby. Either works for me.

Eurovision is propped up in the UK by Our Tel. No question. Sounds like he's ready to throw in the towel so that could be enough to trigger its downfall. One can hope.

Here endeth my review

Mark
25-05-2008, 14:12
No, it probably wasn't the best song there. It was average or a little better. Therefore, taking that literally and removing the politics, it should have come in somewhere around 13th. As it was, it got 8 points from Ireland, 6 from San Marino, and nil points from everyone else. I'd like to see anyone try to justify Spain getting four times that (without reference to politics).

Even if we rolled out the best song in the world, ever, we wouldn't win. Probably wouldn't even make top 10. Time to throw in the towel.

divine

I think we should at least put in one last absolute piss take.

I mean, we are guaranteed a final place, unlike Ireland, so no chance of getting knocked out in the semi's, might as well take advantage and do something awful

Was he actually a pop idol entrant then? Kittens post confused me.

If we did really want to win, we'd need to put in a a hot chick with big boobs, as they seemed to fare a lot better when you took the politics out of it.

Jordan did try and enter a few years ago, got knocked out in the semis.

She wouldn't have been in the Semi's, the UK don't do them, we go straight to the finals.

He's got a good voice and had much better songs to sing than the one he had last night.

Greece and Armenia were hot though. They'd have got my vote.

25-05-2008, 22:49
well, is your opinion and you're entitled to it. However I'm not a fan of Pop Idol/X Factor whatever type things in general, certainly not Andy Abraham, and IMO the UK entry was far better than at least half of those that finished above it. Everyone who enters that show as a contestant absolutely knows they are unlikely to finish out of the bottom two. We've had 'novelty' acts the last couple of years and finished bottom. Presumably they decided to put forward a 'real' singer and see if he could fare any better. He didn't. If we really wanted to win, the X-Factor WINNER would have to enter as part of their contract.

That still wouldn't be enough to beat the political voting. Lana and I watched a film on Saturday night, and switched to the voting at the end of it, having missed all of the singing. After I predicted the first couple of countries votes, Lana was soon joining in and getting them right more often than not. This is someone who'd never even heard of the Eurovision Song Contest before I mentioned it a few days ago.

Musically we would have been better off with Beverly Knight's entry. I think she got the cheesy EuroPop blend perfectly with her song. It might have gained us a few other votes along the line, at least enough to stay off the bottom. I have to agree with other critique of Andy.. he's just too good, and not distinctive enough. He can sing well, and that's not what the competition needs. Britain forever picks safer options, or options that suit our pop tastes, rather than Europe's. It's only occasionally that you get entries like Katrina and the Wales back in '97, something that was upbeat, uptempo and 'spiritually' uplifting that we get any decent placing.. and I doubt even that would place well these days.

I wasn't expecting a win last night, wasn't even expecting to get off the bottom. Very little we do will ever change that. I think Terry Wogan was right in his critique towards the end and his assessment that all the Western European countries need to do some serious thinking about their continued entry to the contest. In its current structure it just doesn't work.

Mark
07-12-2008, 00:43
Same. As far as I'm concerned, Tel's slightly drunken ramblings made it watchable despite the fact we all knew we would lose no matter what. No surprise he's gone, but it's very much the poorer for it.

I might give next year one last chance, but as far as I'm concerned unless something dramatic happens it'll be the final curtain.

The sooner the BBC stops spending the licence fee on this **** the better.

How can we find talent like Will Young and Leona Lewis yet churn out crap that the BBC does for the Eurovision.

Mark
07-12-2008, 02:22
Huh? What's the BBC got to do with the crapness? Eurovision itself is the problem here, not the BBC coverage.

If we asked Will Young or Leona Lewis to take part in Eurovision, they'd almost certainly decline (at least without a sizeable bribe). If they did, they's still get slaughtered by the bloc votes, and it'd do no favours at all for their careers as a result.

In fact, I'm surprised Andrew Lloyd Webber volunteered, but he has probably had a long enough career not to care now, and he won't be the one on stage on the night anyway. :)
