Got my iphone this morning! It's very funky.
I managed to get my PAC from 3 after 20 mins of being told by some bint that you could buy an unlocked 3G iphone from the Apple shop for £300 which she would be able to save me on the contract :p
Do you know how long it takes for the number to change? She said 2 working days then up to a day without service but I think this must be to cover themselves.

Bah, I always get \ and / the wrong way around when I'm using the Macbook. I'm fine when using a PC keyboard because I know which button it is on the keyboard, rather than which character I need.
Ah well, glad it's sorted.
Seems like I made the right choice not waiting for T-Mobile :)
For a similar plan, they wanted £160 for the phone and only around £40 cashback on Quidco. They've also changed the phone casing a little and I've also heard that there is less RAM on board, although I've not found confirmation of that.

Looks like a decent phone, at first glance it didn't seem that much different from my SPV m700 but there are some nice little touches that make it seem worthwhile. However I don't think my contract is up for a little while, maybe an HTC Touch Diamond Dual is on its way? I'd really like to have a phone with a keypad for drunken texting.
Touch Diamond Pro has the keyboard but isn't out for a good few months yet. Started getting too chunky for my liking too.
Well my m700 is quite a bit bigger than the diamond so maybe i could trade size for keyboard, harder to lose aswell.
Edit: I mean phonepad not keyboard, like a regular phone.
Phoned Orange last night to find out what was happening. The Diamond is now out of stock and won't be back in until near the end of August. So what is the point in saying in stock when I place my order? Surely a handset should be allocated to my account?

To take make their comission without giving you a phone? ;D
Spoken to Orange this morning to sort out my payment details. Looks like it's back in stock and should hopefully be sent out today :)
The guy I work with has had his (from Orange) for a week or so now. He loves it, and I loved playing with it. He does day accidental dialling is a problem though - he was constantly calling his missus. He had to put a dummy number in his phone book to stop it happening.
Shame, hopefully they'll patch it. Hasn't put me off though.
Phone dispatch is now confirmed :D
I have it....and oh my it's beautiful :D
What did you get? I started reading this thread and it got too geeky :p
Is it on Orange and if so did you have to pay extra mooola for it?
Thankyouplease :)

Isn't it :D Smaller than you'd think too.
You did well too. T-Mobile have put the thing on their site and the prices are nowhere near as good as the deal you got.
I'll sort some pics out tonight :)
Just think of it as a better, smaller iPhone ;D
What did you get? What is the model?
Is it on Orange and if so did you have to pay extra mooola for it?
Also.. can you somehow in someway put TomTom software stuff on it?
What would the best tariff on Orange to get with it?
:p
BB x
It's an HTC Touch Diamond and cost me £40 on a new contract. Also got £150 Quidco back :D
Yeah, you can run TomTom and loads of other stuff on it. However, and it's a BIG HOWEVER, these phones aren't for everyone. It's Windows Mobile based which means you can muck around and do lots with it, so I'd say unless you like to play, fiddle and do more than just use a phone as a phone, it's not really for you.
Looks great from what I've heard :) Might have to consider whatever the equivalent is come contract renewal er next October ;D

Nothing else out there that interests me at the moment

I'd really suggest looking at one first though Mei. They are so different from most phones you might find it a touch too fiddly. More than happy to let you play with mine next time we meet up (fnnaarrrrr!!!!)

Thanks :D ;) will call into the shop aswell tomorrow actually... I know they are only models, but can have a look at what else is on offer again.
Thanks for advice :)

Oooh can I have a fiddle when you come up here too? :D
So much fnnaarrrr there ;D
Everyone can fiddle, I'm not shy :D
Another thing I just thought of....these types of phone are not great for battery life, so if that's important to you then it's another thing to be aware of.
Depends how much you use it and what you use.
I don't know how the battery capacity compares to my HTC TyTn, if I'm travelling I'll quite often be reading stuff off the web (graphics off so not much traffic but the screen on all the time) and that'll drain the battery to <70% within 2 hours.
On the other hand, if I'm not using it much I leave it with wi-fi and bluetooth disabled and it'll quite happily run for 5-7 days between charges.
Just think of it as a better, smaller iPhone ;D
Yer, my eyes bleed when I try that.
OSPS are doing this with 600mins & unlimited texts for £35 a month on an 18 month contract with £192.50 back by redemption over five claims.
Bit tedious claiming the money back but looks like a storming deal for such a new phone.
Interesting report on El Reg (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/07/25/orange_may_get_iphone/) that the iPhone _may_ be coming to Orange. This'll be good if it's accurate.
Got a colleague at work who's very interested in the Diamond so if you could post any pics of it and give your initial impressions when you get a chance that'd be fab :)
Here's a couple of quick pics...

Will take some shots with it next to my N73 to show the size.
The phone is just different to use. I'm used to Symbian based Nokias so some of the things that jump to hand are little more long winded on the Diamond. Having said that, it's just so much better. The built in GPS is great with TomTom and Google Maps...no need to hunt down and turn on the separate GPS unit. The WiFi is good for a bit of browsing at home or file transfers. My only complaints so far would be that it picks up fingerprints too easily and the touchflow can be a little laggy. Still, I'll have that sorted by tomorrow when I flash it with the TLR ROM :D Other than that, I can't think of anything...it can only get better as I add more apps.
Cool, thanks for that.
TLR ROM?
There are developers out there who take the original ROM and make changes and improvements to it. TLR have done one that people have said make a big difference to the speed of the interface so I'll be popping that on to start with :)

And it's much smoother.

Phoned O2 this morning to cancel contract and get PAC. PAC should be text to me in next 48 hours. No idea how long it will take from there.
Daz, PAC code came through from O2 within 48 hours by text as promised on the phone. Just phoned Orange to get it transfered and they said it should be done by the 31st so it's only a couple days to transfer.
Cheers dude :)
Got a link to that ROM? I'll pass it on.
You need to use HardSPL (I used 1.23) from here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408621
and then flash it with the TLR ROM from here... http://www.modaco.com/content/htc-diamond-diamond-modaco-com/270282/tlr-diamond-rom-3-based-on-1-93-456-2-with-uninstallable-updatable-tf3d-manila/
All instructions are in the second link which also contains the link to the HardSPL stuff as well.
How weird is this? Had a text from Orange this morning saying to restart the phone. so I think, cool, number transfered. If I phone out from the new phone it uses the correct number but all incoming calls still go through to my old phone. So both phones are sharing the same number
I guess I'll wait a few more hours as maybe it's midway through transferring?
It's pretty common, I've had that happen with all the phones that I've ported over. You'll find at some point that new calls go to the new phone then a short while later the old one will drop off the network.
I'm in a quandry as I found yesterday that the Diamond doesn't play nicely with the bluetooth in my car - the phonebook doesn't transfer over. I can still use the voice activated dialling as that's a separate phonebook in the bluetooth module but it's a complete bitch to setup.
Ah right. I've ported a number before but never noticed anything like this. Hopefully by the end of the day it will be sorted :)

Is it an issue with the Diamond or WM6.1 in general?

I'm not positive but I think it might be a generic WM thing. I dug out my old TyTN and that did the same as the Diamond.
It isn't a huge problem I guess but I do like having my entire phonebook available either through the screen in the instrument cluster or the sat nav. I suppose I could add my most frequently used numbers to the voice dialling system (even though it takes about 5 minutes to do each number) and then make do with picking up the handset each time I want to dial another number.

The iPhone nano was apparently mentioned in the Daily Mail. So not the most reliable of sources then.

I saw a US patent application on digg before so it looks possible.
I've just ordered an HTC Touch Diamond to replace my knackered Samsung SGH i600 work phone.
I did want to have a play with one to see if I'd get on with it, but I can always send it back to Vodafone if I don't want it.

I know I'll want one when I've had a chance to really play with it (assuming I can get the thing to eat my self signed certificates), but I also know it isnt for me. I need as open a platform as I can get and that is never gonna be Apple. Plus it's not as if the Diamond isn't going to be slick, just not as slick as the iPhone.
It's perfect for Dee though. She can get push email from our Exchange box and replace her old dying iPod at the same time.

There's tons you can do with an iPhone though. Write all your own apps if you like.
I dont wanna get drawn into the Apple vs World debate. Some people are happy to accept the experience Apple delivers and the way they maintain it - it's just not for me :)

Touch Pro number 1 en route! :D
Pro has some nice features, but it's way too thick for me.
If it's a little thinner/lighter than my TyTN then the Pro may be my upgrade (I need the keyboard - I know how much easier it has been for me to send texts since I got the TyTN). If not I may get it anyway and see if I can get that and something lightweight for cheap(ish) and swap SIMs as I need. One of those E51s Feek was offering might have been ideal for that job.
iTunes App Store. Get a program called Simplify Media, currently free. Download the client from www.simplifymedia.com and you can then share out your entire music collection. So your iPhone has access to all your tunes at home over wifi, 3g etc.

Oooh, tasty. Still got a long time before my next phone upgrade (14 months or so I think) but it's nice to see lots of sexy phones available for the future.
Vodafone messed up a bit and sent my Diamond to the office rather than my house so unless I head over to the office over the weekend I'll be waiting until Wednesday to get it as I'm off to Sweden on Monday.
i played with the diamond today, it's really nice. Much as I hate to say this as I am admittedly an apple fangirl, the i-phone is starting to feel a bit 'Primark' to me at the moment. Everyone's got one, I mean, when your 75 year old Great Uncle is pulling out an i-phone and using it to text his kids, it's time to move onto something else imho. It was ace when we first saw it in the US before it came here, but now it's just a seeming a little, i dunno, common, I suppose.
ssssh :p I've not seen any round here :D but then again it is a bit unique round here ;D
All being well my next phone will be the Xperia - it just looks awesome.
I had a play with the diamond and it seemed, well it seemed slow??
It looked so good...saying that I did only get minutes with it.

You've crossed a line :p Maybe your great uncle is just that damn cool :D You should see us photographers though. Its like an Apple store some days :D
It better live up to the hype, I am still getting mine tomoro :D
It so does. Theres a new app out for photographers that does all sorts of geeky things like calculate hyper focal distance. Personally I don't try and overcomplicate things, I just go "Oooh nice" and take a photo. But it has a feature that tells you the sunset time for your location. Quite handy.
Sweet
Ive been trying to ring O2 all afternoon to see if they have any in stock :(
One of the girls I work with was coming past my house en route to visiting some family so she dropped the Diamond off a while ago.
Even the packaging and charger look nice! It's smaller than I thought it would be but from a very quick play about it's perfectly usable. I can't be arsed to dig out the laptop and setup the connection to Exchange so I'll leave it for the weekend and do it on Monday before I go to Sweden.

TBH mate, I got the thing on friday and I haven't even put a SIM in it yet. I read Desmo's comments that this ROM removes some lag that is present in the OEM?
It would seem so :)
If any of you Apple folk come across a fix for this (http://www.rassoc.com/gregr/weblog/2008/07/18/iphone-and-exchange-push-and-dns/) on your travels, let me know. Changing DNS either on the phone or the server will break other things so thats not a workaround for us. Bit worried the push isn't going to be reliable even outside the house - we have a dynamic IP on the web connection, which is hidden with some DNS trickery, but if this thing is using an IP under the hood that'll cause problems.
[edit]Ok, turning the phone off and on again 'resets' the IP it's bound to. That'll do for now.
I'll flash my Diamond Touch later today. It does indeed feel quite laggy.

Can't really comment as I flashed mine without using it, but post-flash it's still not instant when pressing buttons.
If you don't want to flash your Diamond straight away, there are a few apps with treaks built in that should help speed it up as well. At least you can try those and then flash if still not happy.

Mine is giving me a few problems. For some reason even though I've got a UMTS (or GPRS) connection active I can't get to any websites, get email, update weather or so on. If I reset the device then it works fine but it seems that after about an hour it stops working again. If I try to manually terminate the data connection then it just sites there with the silly spinning symbol thing in the middle of the screen until I reset it.
I did wonder if it is to do with me being in Sweden but I assume that the roaming data connection would either work, or not work.
Mine does crazy things like that too!!! Not exactly what you said, but I think it crashes :/ Sometimes the middle of the touch screen doesn't work ... if it persists I'm going to ask for a replacement. Usually recommended by a restart of the phone - but this shouldn't happen.
But I am thinking its something I have not done (turned off maybe) and am yet to discover.
BB x
I have occasional issues with GPRS on my Touch, but it's usually down to T-Mobile, and the connection is sort just by killing the GPRS and restarting it.
Haven't used the data in another country, too fudging expensive!
Data when abroad costs a bomb, something silly like £7/Mb I think but it's a company phone so I don't really care :)
I've not come across any of those probs but then I did flash it with a totally different ROM after a couple of hours. It might get rid of your problems, but I guess it would invalidate any warranty.
Are there tools to backup your stock ROM Des?
Dunno mate, didn't bother looking ;D
I'd guess there would be and if there isn't, there should be somewhere to download the stock ROM for your device depending on where it came from. I've seen T-Mob ROMs floating around so I'm sure there are others for Orange, O2, etc.
Be handy for resale or warranty situations :)
May possibly get mine next week - depends if T-Mobile retentions want to play. And I'll definitely be flashing theirs if I get it - pink menu's and anti-virus :/

What, no funky diamond like back at all?!?!`
I'll see if mine starts to behave when I'm back in Blighty. If it doesn't then I'll shove another ROM on and give that a whirl.
What, no funky diamond like back at all?!?!`
Nope, they changed it to a plain back and changed the camera lens section...
http://x.msmobiles.com/portal/images/events/cebit2008/cebit2008-14-mda-compact-iv.jpg
That's the best pic I could find. I believe they also changed the lugs inside meaning you can't put on another case or even the official extended battery and case.
TBH I'd prefer a flat back. The Diamond effect looks pretty swish but it's a pain when the phone rocks about when I've got it on the table and am using it.
Me no likey :(
I prefer the black diamond case... sexy!

It's handy because even if you're visiting friends, most will have a USB cable that will fit so you don't have to worry about a charger :D
Yup. All recent HTC phones seem to be like that. The 'proprietary' bit is the extra pins to carry audio.

If things go well I'm hoping to tie a Diamond up with one of these (http://gizmodo.com/5038298/leaked-dell-inspiron-910-mini-note-specs-and-release-date), so a tux one might be a nice touch (see what I did thar?)!
Mustn't get ahead of myself though. Not even sure I'll be in a position to get the phone anytime soon and Dell haven't even mentioned anything about pricing yet.
I've been back in Blighty a few days and the data connection is still arsing about so I'm going to flash the phone with the ROM that Desmo posted.
I've given up on the thing for now. For some reason it wouldn't connect to ActiveSync this morning so I had to hard reset it to get that working. Then I found a new Vodafone branded ROM so gave that a try but it still isn't right.
I'm connecting to the Exchange server over the air using a PPTP VPN and it doesn't want to bring up the VPN connection. ActiveSync (on the phone) keeps telling me 'waiting for network'
I'll have another go next week when I've got more time to play around.
I've had all sorts of trouble with PPTP on Windows Mobile - from Pocket PC 2003 through WM5 and still on WM6. I gave up, it just didnt work consistently.
I had it working perfectly on my WM5 Samsung something or other and it seems it does work on this Diamond when I'm using WiFi but not with GRPS/UMTS which is far from ideal.
I'll give one of the other ROMs a bash next week and see if that makes any difference.

I haven't tried reinstalling ActiveSync on my laptop yet though... but other probs I have had so far:
*after a phonecall, it crashes and when turned on, there is just a cross in the top right hand corner and a black screen
*randomly turns off :/
*start menu/keypad icon vanishes at random times
*can't turn it off (hold and turn off) can only put in standby
I can only get it working again after all these probs by taking the battery out and turning it on.
Am typing this here so I remember to tell Orange in the morning when I call them... I know I haven't looked into the activesync problem, but all these things shouldn't be happening so its going back next week.
Grrr!
BB x
You'll probably want an original ROM on it before you send it back. Orange may not like it otherwise. :(
Ever since you put the Rom on that weekend Jamie
That wasn't a new ROM :p It was just a tweaks prog that makes a few settings changes.
I reckon they'll suggest upgrading to the latest official ROM. Having said that, I don't think Orange have actually released their version yet.
I read somewhere that Orange use the bog standard HTC ROM.

So I can leave it on there?
Are you saying my phone isn't broken then? I haven't heard of anyone else's phone doing the things mine is.
BB x
I'm not saying it's not broken, just saying that you are still using the standard ROM as supplied by Orange :)
The program I put on only makes some software changes, none of which should cause the problems you're having. Your one could just be cream crackered :/
Burble... the Orange ROM didn't have any branding on it at all and neither did the device, apart from the logo on the back panel. Not sure if they used a totally stock HTC ROM or if they modified it in any way at all.
I'll give em a call anyway.... thanks Jamie :)

They have another handset on hold for me for next week as they said its a fault (tbh I think the call handler knew as much about the prob as me :/)
Too much on this weekend to receive it tomorrow and faff with so gonna wait till can be delivered next fri.

The only problems I'm having at the moment are (and I'm using the TLR ROM that Desmo posted) poor battery life, and I cannot for the life of me get the thing to connect to MSN or login to hotmail.
The battery life really seems to improve after a while. I'm happy with mine now and the only battery saving things I've done are the normal backlight and poweroff settings. I might have turned on some other small power management features using Schaps Advanced Config tool but I'm not sure they made a massive difference.
Had a little play with my phone last night with some good results....and some bad ;D
Even though I used Sprite Backup to backup my contacts, messages, etc (which is meant to work across ROM upgrades), I couldn't restore the backup afterwards. It kept asking for a password but it wouldn't accept anything I tried :/ Still, I got almost all of my contacts back from Piggy's phone so no big problem there.
On to the good stuff :)
I wanted to upgrade the radio after having slightly dodgy reception in the office at work. I also swapped from the TLR3 ROM to SwiftBLv6. No real reason other than to see what a different one was like. Only thing I didn't like about TLR was that in All Programs it would list some twice for some reason and I also couldn't change what was in the main Start Menu.
The change went smoothly and SwiftBL works fine. Wouldn't say it's noticeably quicker than TLR but it does seem a slight touch more responsive (but then it is a clean install). It does however seem to use less memory. After turning off the Diamond phone skin (which uses 10MB on it's own) I get 59MB free after a soft reset which I think is more than TLR.
As for the radio, there is a definite improvement, though still not as big an improvement as I was hoping for. I'm now on radio 1.00.25.07. Some people say it might drain the battery a touch more so I'll keep an eye on that and see how it goes.
I had a real good play with my mates Diamond yesterday and really got on with it. Doesn't seem slow to me, but my current Touch isn't snappy at all, so relative to that it's lightening.
The browser is as close to the iPhone that I've used. Not as slick, but function for function it's pretty close, think I'll be happy with it. Also found out that the Diamond T-Mobile have isn't technically a Diamond - it's a Victor. Identical innards just a different chassis. Having seen it I'm actually ok with the look - I'd choose the fancy back over it but it's still a nice phone, and I do prefer the round corners. If I can get the youtube app back on I may even keep the stock rom... we'll see after using it I guess.
Gonna put the squeeze on T-Mobile today and see what I can wangle.
I'm going to attack mine with a hammer soon. It has yet again refused to connect to ActiveSync. If I have to do a hard reset on it again I'll shove the stock ROM back on and send it back.
Over the air AS or cabled?
Cabled :/ I've even tried different cables, different USB ports and even another PC.
AS starts up then after about 30 seconds says it can't connect and offers me the troubleshooter which is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.
I've been through the USB options on the phone (it can act as just a USB disk if you want) but with no luck.
The strange thing is that it worked yesterday afternoon but not this morning and in that time neither the laptop or phone have been rebooted or even used.
It's like a daemon or driver on the phone just isnt answering or something. If it was a problem with the port you'd think it would be more consistent, and possible wouldn't charge. Tres dodgy.
It's a right pain in the arse. I can't get AS working over the air because the Diamond doesn't like PPTP and I can't be bothered to setup a frontend exchange server and poke holes in the firewall just for this.
I'll switch back to my old Samsung for now and maybe try again when I've got more time to mess about.

First thoughts with the 10 minutes I've been allowed with the Touch Pro.
It's superb.
Screen is fantastic and the keyboard, although small, is very good indeed. It's pretty rapid as well. GPS seems to work well, but that was just hobbling around the office.
Prefer the keyboard on my XDA Exec, but thats definately getting long in the tooth now.
Hmmm.... How can I stea... borrow the works one?
How does it compare size wise to the Exec Flib?

28-08-2008, 11:46
Smaller in all dimensions. Not much on the depth - couple of mm in it. But around an inch narrower and shorter.
If only the keyboard tilted like the Tytn II - still, not much of a loss.
Still trying to accendentally drop the phone into my bag or pocket without noticing. ;)

Mine did that too... well the last one did, got delivered a replacement yesterday which I haven't had time to faff about with...so haven't tried AS either.
Got another pair of earphones, case and stylus though :)

Well....not liking it any more ;D
Whilst the signal strength can be stronger, it seems to be more eratic. One minute it has a signal, the next it's disappeared and whilst it's hunting for one the battery is getting chomped up. Will be going back to .05 tonight. It's less than a 5 minute job so no big deal.
Picked one up this afternoon, easy as that :D
I AS over the air but I had to fiddle to get it setup on the laptop (time sync and some other things) - I needed to run windows update with the phone connected to fetch a new driver before it would work. Not sure if that helps if you're having trouble with it but thought I'd post :) This is on Vista with the Mobile Device Center (ActiveSync's replacement).
Just getting to grips with it now. I just uninstalled that damn Antivirus program and Co-Pilot, doesn't feel too slow at the moment, but like I say, compared to my old phone it was lightening. Missing the YouTube app - need to decide if I want to just flash the thing and get everything I want, or hack and change this around to sort it. Getting rid of the white and pink is easy enough. Not sure if I like the look or not yet.... hmms!
Anyway, new phone wootness. Stuck with my contract and just paid for it, so I'm still on £27.50 for 12 months, which I'm quite happy with.
Des - Did you go back to radio .05?
Aye, seems much more stable to me. Most people on XDA Dev go for .05 too.
s'alright now, was having some right fun with firmwares the other night - AS over the air just wasn't working with anything but stock firmware, thought it might be something weird to do with the radio, turns out it was a dodgy t-mobile proxy which I'm now avoiding.
Running the latest HTC official now - so long pink!

Be thankful you aren't my boss. His iPhone fell off the sofa hit a plate and cracked the entire top half of the screen. It hit the plate on the side and the phone is now a mess :(
Can you claim on the insurance Dee?
Would you believe, we were only talking about insurance last night, I have mobile insurance with Lloyds TSB, and apparently with our joint account, its covered with Natwest as well, but we didnt know if it covered the iPhone. Even the O2 saleman warned me some insurances dont cover it :(
http://www.lloydstsb.com/current_accounts/added_value_accounts/mobile_phone_breakdown1.asp
Lloyds should, providing you registered the phone with them.
I just updated both our phone info on the Natwest one as well. Worst case just leave it a week and tell them it happened then :D
Caution - insurers don't like duplicative cover as it's a potential area for fraudulent claims. They might try to set off some or all of the claim against each other.
PS - I'll raise Desmo to 3 weeks, particularly with Lloyds.

Hooold the phone.
Just noticed this thread is about the iPhoney AND the Touch.
D'oh.
BTW the battery life on my Diamond sucks hard. Not impressed.
but the chances of me passing a credit check are miniscule to none.
I passed! I am the proud owner of a 16Gb 3G iPhone. I'm undecided as to whether to PAC a number over or just go with the new one. If I do, I'm not going to PAC my current one anyway but go with an old one which has been sitting inactive on my account for a few years. :undecided:
Here's a handy tip for those of you that flashed your Diamond ROM :)
Instead of using activesync, you can flash straight from your phones internal storage...
1. Copy the ROM .nbh file to the ROOT of your internal storage (NOT your phone memory).
2. Rename the file DIAMIMG.nbh
3. Soft-reset your phone and, straight away, hold VOL- & Back key together until your HardSPL loads up.
4. You will now see a menu appear that says it has found the ROM image. You can either press POWER to upgrade it or Enter to cancel. Hit POWER and the ROM will be installed.
All the usual cavaets apply. It's not my fault if you screw it up ;) You'll need to change your HardSPL if you haven't done so already (I'm using Olinex1.4). Make sure you have enough power in the phone. Don't turn the phone off until you are given the message that the update is complete. Don't play around with the phone or press buttons, just let it do it's thing, even if you think it's doing nothing. It WILL tell you when it's completed.
This can be used for full ROM's or just radios. I've just run this myself and it works fine.
Work has rolled out our company mobiles.
16 GB iPhone 3G's.
First impressions? Impressive. However Apple products usually are impressive at first sight in my experience. Swish controls and shiny cases only go so far though.
As a personal phone, I'm seeing no "major" problems but I think it falls short of Apple's hype. The battery life is "ok" even after the 2.1 update it's not great. It could/should be a lot better and even my 20 month old XDA Orbit holds a better charge than this straight out the box. With 3G, Wifi, GPS all off, the phone will last a few days before dying. With any of those on, a day. Not great so a car charger is essential if you're travelling anywhere with it. I expect it to do die on me and the worst possible time.
SMS isn't handled very well at all, and much more effort could have been put in to cater for one of the biggest methods of mobile communication. A conversation style layout doesn't feel right with text messages. With e-mails and forums sure, but with texts, I'm not convinced. The traditional cascading message list should have been left alone. No forwarding of texts is also something left out for reasons unknown. Remember how easy it is to recieve a funny joke on text and forward it to your own mates? Forget it on the iPhone, unless you fancy typing it all out yourself. You can't even copy and paste the contents into a new message because copy and paste isn't supported either. It's very basic, which is fine, but some people are paying through the nose for this phone, it should have better SMS features in all honesty.
Calls? Excellent so far. Call quality is solid and clear and the controls are a dream to use. The phone even turns the screen off when it's by your ear, but turns back on when you bring it back down. Clever.
E-mail? Mine sucks e-mail from Exchange and it's fantastic. I'm really impressed at how well it copes with a typical Exchange account. It pulls data down fast thanks to the 3G and the e-mail browser is responsive and very smart. It's so simple, out the office your phone beeps. You slide to unlock, read the new e-mail, tap reply and type your response. Sounds simple, but there's no lag, no scrolling up and down, left and right, fiddling with a stylus etc. It works perfectly, zero faults from me.
It would be nice if tasks with a reminder would pop-up, but sadly not. Calendars work well though.
Web browsing? Well, I've used the iTouch and it's all the same. Quick, easy, and sexy. Apple spin the truth a little bit on how well it copes with the web, anything more than a standard website and it falls down. Flash and javascript just simply aren't supported so some websites won't work at all. However the story is the same on most, if not all mobile devices.
Again, like the Touch, the music and video is spot on.
One final drawback? Well, maybe WM spoiled me with TomTom but it was so easy with my XDA. I had a phone and a satnav in one, perfect. The iPhone doesn't come close to that really. Google Maps is good but doesn't hold a candle to TomTom in terms of navigation software. There's apparently plans for TomTom to release a TomTom Touch app for the iPhone. I'll wait and see.
Well, I think I escape my current tie-in in a fortnight, which leaves me with one big problem:
iPhone HTC Touch Diamond HTC Touch Pro HTC/T-Mobile G1
The iPhone is certainly tempting - it's Apple, so it (mostly) just works - no messing about with stuff. Problem is I'm not sure I could deal with the Apple tie-in, or the lack of a proper keyboard.
HTC Touch Diamond seem to be going pretty cheap these days (comparitively). There's that 'no keyboard' problem again though.
HTC Touch Pro was my phone of choice, but there seem to be very few people selling it and thus no decent deals.
HTC/T-Mobile G1 is the 'new kid on the block'. Ticks the 'has keyboard' box, but it's very much 'bleeding edge' and while I'll accept a little instability (it happens), I've not read enough about the G1 to convince me it's a worthy competitor.
There's always the 'wait it out' option I suppose. :dunno:

Have you considered the HTC Touch Dual? Has a slide out keypad just like a normal phone, so don't know if that's what you're after, or a QWERTY style keyboard. No Wi-Fi on it though I think, so that may well be a negative.
I've seen the Touch Pro and it's got you written all over it Mark, cracking device. I'd hold out for that :)
It's QWERTY I'm after. I may not use it that much, but I've found a proper keyboard to be vastly superior to all the on-screen efforts I've seen so far. I admit I haven't seen what the Touch or iPhone do for an on-screen keyboard though.

I'm less than a year from renewing my contract and that's what I'm hoping to get when I do renew, as it looks like a fantastic device.
I think you'd struggle with the HTC on-screen keyboard Mark if I'm being honest. It's quite small and fiddly, although you can chose the usual phone keypad which makes things bigger, but it's still nowhere near a proper keypad for ease and speed.
Is it just the regular WM keyboard, or do they do something funky with TouchFlo? The regular WM keyboard sucks donkey ****.
The Touch Pro was supposed to have been out a few months ago so I've no idea what's going on (though I did hear something about the radio firmware being broken on T-Mobile).
They've put a new virtual keyboard on, and it is a lot better (I use it as my default, portrait, and type with my fingers pretty accurately), but it's still no substitute, neither s the one on he iPhone. I'm lucky that I dont really do a lot of text input on it, so I can live with it.
I don't use my mobile phone much at all (no-one wants to speak to me :(). If I'm at home I use it in place of the landline (may as well use the free minutes, and frankly the audio on my mobile is way better than the landline). If I'm out travelling then text and web gets used, and that's where the keyboard comes in.

Here's (http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchhd/overview.html) another to add to the list.
Bigger screen makes the virtual keyboard a real option.
It does if you have good eyesight. :)
The big problem I have with phones is when they try to cram too much onto the screen. Full-width browsing on a 4.8in screen is a non-starter for me, so you can guess what I think about that 3.8in screen. As that seems to be the major selling point, I'm not convinced that is for me.

So don't browse full width?
IIRC doesn't the iPhone have a 3.5 inch screen?
The diamond has a 2.8in screen, as has the touch pro.
Lastly I think the Android is 3.2 inches, but feel free to correct me on this one.
Full width browsing is a pain on all mobile devices, so don't do it. The HTC's allow you to zoom in and out so easily it makes browsing less of a chore and more of an actual method of use.
Indeed, you are correct in all (that I know of) respects. I've already got Opera 9.5 installed on my TyTN, which works decidedly well (if a little slowly and prone to running out of memory if you throw something JavaScript-laden like Google Maps at it).
I still think I'd prefer a tactile keyboard, but maybe you're right, the HD is worth a look.

The HD has more memory, so you should be ok on that score, but I have to add a caveat. The HD is good.....very good in fact, but I'm missing a real keyboard now that I have a Diamond Touch. But, the only reason I'm missing it is down to what I think is a glitch in the cooked ROM I'm using. If I'm posting on a forum and I have T9 enabled, if I type a few letters of a word then I select one of the choices it gives me, the damn cursor jumps back by a couple of words. It's driving me mental, but I haven't found the same problem with the HD.
Your best bet is to goto a store and play with all of them.
If I can find a store that has all of them. That's part of my problem. I've seen the Touch Diamond and the iPhone in stores, though not played with either myself. Finding the others is proving rather challenging.

The HD is new, so that might be a toughy to track down, but *I THINK* the upcoming T-mobile Vario 4 is a rebranded Diamond Touch Pro, so you should be able to check that out sometime v.soon.

Any of you guys want BBC iPlayer on your HTC?
Run Opera
In the address bar enter opera:config (no http://)
Scroll down to User Prefs and click
Scroll down to Custom User-Agent and at the end of the pre-filled text add sgh-i900
Scroll down some more and press Save. You will get a prompt which suggests you may need to reset the phone, but for this you don’t.
Now point your browser to http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/ and enjoy. The video opens in HTC Streaming Player on HTC smartphones.

If they can get the weight right. That might well make my day. Seriously. The question is how long I'd have to stick with my TyTN while waiting for that.
In other news, there's rumours that the Vario IV might finally make an appearance within a week or so. Apparently the Touch Pro is cheaper on Vodafone, but even though I live in their home town, I'm not sure I want to go there (a comment from a sales guy in a CPW store was rather telling, and approximated to we don't do smartphones with them because they're crap).

Have a problem, and you're dealing with them and not your network provider.

Oh, I had a look at the iPhone onscreen keyboard while I was there. I could at least read all the letters which would be a good start. I'll fetch an Apple store guy and have a proper play when I'm in the vicinity of a store next weekend. :)
I'll probably go with a Vario 4 when it comes out. The 3 has been fine but the battery life is atrocious and it's extremely irritating that an incoming call dims the display - I can't believe HTC didn't release a fix for it. There are a few other problems but nothing like as bad as those two. Having said all that, I think I'll wait for a while before moving to the 4 - I don't want another buggy phone.

I have to hold my hands up and say that the iPhone IS a really good piece of kit. If it suits you, and it's shortcomings don't affect you then buy one.
It's going to be a significant compromise for sure - particularly the likes of copy/paste, which I use a lot on my current phone, but I must confess to a hankering after the App Store. I haven't used my current phone to anywhere near its full potential as a result of finding and installing useful apps being prohibitively time-consuming.

TBH, the only time I send MMS messages is when I'm overseas (as it's cheaper ;) )
iPhone: Surprisingly I rather like the interface. Safari looks slick and I like the various gestures for panning/zooming etc. I didn't play with it myself but Mr. Apple Guy gave a reasonably convincing demo (though he did assume I owned a Mac, which luckily I do). Even the virtual keyboard didn't look like it would be too bad (though it's not tactile of course, so it'd be slower whatever). I fear for the missing features however - the whole "it's Apple - like it or do the other thing", and the lack of things like copy/paste rather bother me.
HTC/T-Mob G1: Operating System is very obviously v1.0. it may be infinitely customisable but if you haven't got the basics right then all that is for nought. I don't think they have yet. IMO the user interface looks cluttered and not very friendly. I'm sure they'll get there but it isn't for me as a v1.0 device.
HTC Touch Diamond: Smaller than I expected. Screen is the same size as my TyTN, so it isn't going to give me any more real estate to work with. It'll be faster than what I've got now and hopefully I wouldn't persistently run into memory issues (which I certainly seem to be doing at the moment). Didn't find a 'live' demo version so no idea what the keyboard would be like.
Vario IV: Out in two weeks (from a man who should know). Same reservations about the screen but no reservations about the keyboard.
HTC Touch HD: A thing of beauty and I want its babies, but I can't help thinking that all that does is set me up for disappointment when I get one and find I have to use zoom in Opera just as much as ever. I'd still love that screen though, and the surprising fact s that it is barely bigger than my TyTN (much thinner, obviously).
So, current frontrunner is the HD. However, on the cheapest contract it's £292. I have a bonus due that would more than cover that, but I have a far better use for that money than spending it on a phone, however pretty it looks. I don't know if I'd get anything out of retentions (I certainly did with the TyTN) so that's a possibility, and I'll ask, but I suspect that I'm probably best served by waiting six months and then having another look, so unless my current phone breaks, or I get annoyed with it not doing what I want it to and break it, that's probably what I'll do.
Thanks for reading. :)
You can copy and paste with the iphone with the new update i thought.

I'd give the bay a go BBx :)
Thanks Leo - apart from ebay... would go on there, but don't want to but something that is likely to break in like 2 wks or something. :/
You haven't come across any online stores doing 'fake' iphone accessories?
BB x
I usually buy stuff from mobilefun.com :)
Same. :)
I've got several I don't use (freebies etc) but I expect the batteries are knackered by now, otherwise I'd offer. :(

I prefer mobilefun.co.uk ;)

Really handy store layout as it's not too hard to find accessories for your phone.
Yeah thats what I thought Wossi!
Thanks guys :)

Forgot to mention, went round a friends last night as he said he was given an iphone to try from a colleague and it wasn't charging. So I popped round with my itouch cable to see if that works. It turned out that it was a Chinese special and not a real iphone, took a while to explain to him the difference between what he had and a real iphone, his was like a brick :D
My 18 months expired and the sods at Orange removed my discount without warning. ****s.
Since I can't get the phone I want at a sensible price yet (will try again in the summer), I've given the plan a slap and gone from 500min/250text/15MB to 100min/300text/250MB for £6 less than I was paying even with discount. Had they kept quiet I'd have been happy on what I was on. That'll learn them. :)
Oh, I've been doing some backgrounds for people on another forum as well as some for myself. If you want me to knock one up just give me a link to a pic or logo and I'll sort it out :)
Thread revival...
Was thinking about this the other day - I have a design in mind if you wouldn't mind doing this for me when you get a spare mo please?
I will have to get the design together though in PS first.
:)
BB x
Yeah, no worries :)
Make a rogh layout of what you want and I'll tidy it up to make sure it works on the Diamond OK :)
Cool thank you!
I'll bodge something together and sent it to you :)

What discount did they remove matey?
Friends and family?
Nope - I had a £10/mo loyalty discount applied when I upgraded my phone. No-one bothered to tell me it'd expire when my 18 months was up. :/
Still, at least I don't have to bother being careful about internet use now, which has proven useful.
As for future phones, I've decided to wait and see what happens with Windows Mobile 6.5.

Not gloating, but phew.
for a moment you made me think they were withdrawing F+F discount.
how long do you need to be with orange for you to get that discount?
this time last year i was looking for a new contract with them after i'd already been with them for about 2 years and they didn't seem to think that 2 years @ ~£50 a month entitled me to anything 'loyalty' wise. (partly why i'm considering iphoneish thoughts with regards to the end of contract in august! well as long as apple release something new)
I went through retentions with a request for a PAC and the details of the T-mobile contract I was about to switch to in hand.
ha, maybe i'll be offered such a thing in august then.

This (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/news/show/92570/htc-announces-htc-touch-diamond2-and-htc-touch-pro2.html) is more like it...
HTC Touch Pro 2 is much more like it.
Keyboard, tilting 480x800 screen - hell yeah!
Ah yes, MWC now in full swing. I wondered what HTC would stump up. :D
The Pro2 is *almost* the Touch HD Pro I wanted. I have to admit I wasn't convinced by the tilt mechanism on the TyTN II so we'll see if this one is a winner.
PS -

Enjoy. :)
Touch Pro 2 looks very nice. :)
May have to see if it's available when I come to upgrade in June/July time.
I may have done something rather rash today:
1 HTC Touch HD Orange Dolphin £35 - 18 months Quantity = 1Product code 4MN|P04426002@ 0 GBP each
2 <b>*£175 by redemption</b> Quantity = 1Product code 1258@ 0 GBP each
I've only got a cheapo payg tesco mobile atm but playing with my wifes new windows smart phone (only an own brand O2 one) the last few days really brought out the geek in me. Add the fact I've struggled to take many pics of my baby girl (the hassle of taking a big old 5 year old camera out with me) and it can work like a tom tom which the mrs and I were after any way and I persuaded myself.
Phone is Orange Dolphin. £35 pm, 600 calls, 3000 texts with 10 months half price line rental by redemption (£175 back). Works out £455 over the 18 months.
What do people think? Reasonable deal?
Just need a 8GB (or more?) memory card for it now. Anyone got any suggestions?
Need a beer now :)
It's my first ever proper phone contract and I'm a tad worried I've been a bit motivated by the fact I wanted a new toy but I can't wait and think I got a really good deal.

The HD has well documented and unfixed problems, but that price is pretty good for a year and a half.
I like that deal a lot. I'd be very tempted given I'm out of contract but with the Pro2 on the way and being that that's the phone that was on my Christmas wish list, I suspect I should probably wait. :dunno: :(
Not sure on the best place for MicroSD cards. Seems 8GB can be had for sub-£20 though. Might be tempted by one of those myself.
I did think about waiting for the Pro 2 but being a geek for 30 years has taught me if you always wait for the next best thing you'll never get anything. This way I get this now and can look forward to something new and shiny in 18 months.
Would this be ok for the memory card? http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4-/3564175/Sandisk-Micro-SD-HC-8GB-Memory-Card/Product.html
I'm not that far behind you in the geekery department, so I know that one all too well. However, I wanted the Pro2 before it existed, which is where the complication comes from. :)
That SDHC card will be perfect.

if you always wait for the next best thing you'll never get anything.
So very true.
So then, Apple has finally got the message - Users want Copy/Paste, and MMS, and A2DP. Here cometh iPhone 3.0 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7949557.stm)
They've also added in-app payment handling. That's certainly an interesting twist.
PS - like last time the upgrade, when available later this year, is expected to be free for iPhone only. iTouch owners will have to open their wallets.
Ooooh good news! Makes me even happier to own one! :D
That's fantastic news. Even though I only occasionally use MMS I would still want to have it on a phone. I'm using a Blackberry Bold these days and even though the email side of things is awesome there are times when sending a picture by MMS is much more convenient.
It's even better when the software upgrade is free! :D I hope it doesn't slow the phone down, as it's so quick now it would upset me having a slow phone like my old windows mobile used to be.
We still need to test that push server for you Paul. :)

We do indeed! I'll have a bash at fixing the IIS config and then grab you for testing.

Can you bluetooth stuff yet?
Ive been very against wanting an Iphone because I know I will miss the bluetooth and the MMS thing if I got one. (use both a fair bit) but have to admit if theyre sorting out the MMS thing in the summer im leaning back towards one. Contract is up in 2 weeks.
All they need to do now is get TomTom on it and I'd consider one. By the time my contract runs out, that might just be the case.
Noobo question FAO Desmos
My phone is saying I need to delete stuff from it as there is a lack of space in the memory - I assume it means temp internet files etc, pictures etc.
Where can I find them? Looked everywhere :( what else can I delete - I haven't put much on there?!
Please help!

Haven't got much cash atm but kind of tempted by the shiny iPhone. :D
Only thing that could tempt me over to another phone is my uncertainty over the iPhone's compatiblity with Vista x64. Is this sorted now?

iPhone syncs almost perfectly with my copy of vista x64 :)
Only problem I have is that the calender is 8 hours off! Not overly bothered as I'll be reinstalling soon so will solve that little problem then...

Would mean actually installing iTunes as I use Winamp for my iPod stuff but it should be OK. I don't have a job atm so no money but if the new iPhone OS improves things a lot and there is a new iPhone that makes the iPhone dominant again I can't see why I wouldn't want an iPhone. :)

Make sure you haven't got multiple programs running, as they all use memory for workspace.
In the top right corner of the screen there's an icon that looks like three small horizonal lines. Click on it and it will list every program you have running. Click the "X" next to each app to close it and free up some memory.
