The shipping was with avforums, its now at hexus. Simply sign up for the forums using the same mail address that you use for scan, wait till the next day and then enjoy free delivery. You don't have to be an active member, just activate the account.

http://forums.hexus.net/scan-care-hexus/

Scan isn't always the cheapest but its normally very close, knocking off the delivery tends to make it worthwhile.

It's always been at heXus hasn't it?

I've always had free delivery from Scan, due to my heXus account from years ago at any rate.

Aye, that's what I thought. There's been a longtime relationship between Scan and heXus. Never thought to get an account there though.

I was tipped off about Novatech through work and have used them a few times since. Mostly use Scan though. I admit if I need something real quick then I still use OcUK for those.

You have to spend £50+ and have an order under 30Kg. Scan and Hexus ask for 100 or so posts, 3 a week from then on and £20 order excluding VAT. :)

Has anyone bought a hard drive from Scan recently? Bought one for my mate using the AVForums free shipping, it arrived just in a thin plastic (not antistatic?) shell wrapped in bubble wrap and was DOA. Replacement works ok so far. Just got one for me and the same pathetic packaging.

From Scan's RMA instructions:

YOUR RMA WILL BE REJECTED IF YOU DO NOT ENSURE IT IS VERY CAREFULLY AND ADEQUATELY PACKAGED, USING SIMILAR METHODS TO THE ONES WE USED ORIGINALLY ie. Use plenty of bubble wrap and external boxes to protect the product(s) from being damaged on the return courier journey.

What external box?! Freee shipping is one thing, but surely it should be packaged properly?

It'll be OEM most OEM stuff doesn't come in boxes, if you want a box you'll be paying more money for it.

BTW I understand that Gibbo formally of OcUK will be working for Novotech in the new year.

Oh I don't mean a pretty box that says samsung on it, but a brown cardboard outer box for the courier to stick his label on. Literally it was a little bit of bubble wrap and then a plastic bag.

The only place i've used that doesn't do that is eBuyer.

Though, last time I used Scan was for a PSU and that had an outer box big enough to hold a bloody full size ATX case.

Bloody hell, I always expected him to be part of the furniture forever.

I've not ordered from Scan in a while but their packaging was always good previously, even on OEM items.

The story of his departure makes for some very interesting reading and can be found over at the Mustang Owners Club (or at SPS now too, if you dare brave it :p). All very dodgy sounding, wage cuts, cash in hand etc.

Hmmm, this is after the super ted was brought in (Rupert). This probably also explains why a new director was announced on ocuk. I did think at the time "why would I care?" but that probably explains it.

I guess I've been spoilt in the past then :)

When I worked shipping 2nd had stuff we didn't dream of sending anything out poorly packaged. And I've seen exactly how couriers treat stuff...

But touch wood it seems to be working so far. BTW, ddi I have to do a full format? an hour and it's still only 48% :( Doing a new install of XP on it.

HI there

Guys to give you an update!

During all this I got a job offer meaning even better pay. I took it and so my boss put my pay back up and agreed to match the new offer.

However he went back on agreement of matching the pay but agreed to keep me on the 40k I was previously earning.

However I took the new job offer and start working at www.novatech.co.uk January 5th.

Thanks for the advice guys and happy new year.
Can't fault him really. Seems odd that suddenly the money was there to put him back up to £40k.
Also what's odd is that Gibbo was the face of merchandise on the forums, weird.

I've never used Novatech though and I've only had one bad experience with OcUK so hopefully nothing really changes at OcUK and things improve at Novatech. Only better for the home buyers.

I was wondering what all the rumours were about. It's sad to see Gibbo leave OcUK, but its interesting to see all this cash in hand stuff going on. Novatech is a much bigger company anyway, so maybe he'll get a proper BACS salery :)

Always used to use Novatech for motherboards as they used to stock a decent range of Intel produced boards. Not used them in years though.

Think they used to send stuff in boxes :p

but its interesting to see all this cash in hand stuff going on.

Indeed and it made me think back to those old accounts that got distributed from Companies House where it seemed about 20 people were getting a £30k wage between them.

I shant say any more on the matter though, as i'm sure the fellas here would rather such gossip stayed on SPS.

I don't know about the cash in hand thing, but it hasn't surprised me that Gibbo has left. I can't divulge too much I'm afraid - but it's really not that sinister.

That's actually very much not right MB, but anyway... it's not that sinister and Gib made some of the choices for himself.

This has been normal practice for as long as I've ordered from Scan so nowt to do with free shipping. The trick is to order something else that won't fit in the bubble wrapping - then you'll get a box.

I've had worse too - HDD in an antistatic bag and then just shoved in a jiffy bag. I could feel parts of the drive through the bag. Fortunately, it survived and still works. That was from guess who several years ago (they apologised and have since improved).

Bloody hell, I always expected him to be part of the furniture forever.
Same, but then again nothing is a certainty nowadays in employment.

Hmmm, this is after the super ted was brought in (Rupert). This probably also explains why a new director was announced on ocuk. I did think at the time "why would I care?" but that probably explains it.
Rupert disappeared from the scene several months back. No word was given (not that I'd have expected one).

PS - I'm a Novatech customer. Heard about them because work use(d) them for IT spares. Not sure if they still do but I didn't have any problems with the parts I ordered (mainly small stuff that was hard to come by via the usual suspects).

Well shock horror my drive is dying :( Won't read from large parts of it and when I do a scandisk it stops at 24% and won't go any further, have to switch off and on. Have put it as the non-boot drive and am trying scandisk within windows, and that seems to have the same stall point, but at least the computer runs...

Not amused at all.

What is the drive?

Seagate have just admitted to having a load of drives that kill themselves because of the firmware.

Different situation - the bad firmware just makes the whole drive 'disappear'. The data is still there but you can't get at it. In that case, power cycling the machine might help, but woe betide you if you use one in a RAID array and the firmware bug bites.
