View Full Version : Things you don't know about the forums and are too afraid to ask?

Ok, as per title. There's often been a few things I've often wondered about the forums so It's question time.

Be prepared to be branded a complete noob!

So I'll go first.

When you quote, what are the numbers in the quote tag?

Who is hosting our forums now days?

What is the monthly cost?

Burble
17-06-2008, 08:33
The numbers in the quote are to reference the unique ID number for the quote you're actually posting. Ie, your post is post number 209607.

They come up as the little green arrow thing which will take you back to the original post if you click it

You could probably save money on the RAM. 128MB is fine for SPS which had over 200 people online once, plus another 10 or so domains.

Anyway, my question

Who made post #1 and what was it? :D

Matblack

The first post on VB was the Template Modification Changelog but there are imported posts which date back to before then :)

I am personally very pleased, I think we must have one of the most stable comunities on the net, few people leave us (members: active members ratio is high). Sometimes I get very frustrated when there are little fall outs but 99.9% of the time I am proud of what we all have here, thats not to say I wouldn't like to see membership grow but only with quaility posting active members like those we already have.

It's going to happen though. Have a large number of people all together and there will always be a clash now and again, it's human nature and unavoidable. However it's spookily rare on here, and any hatchets that come out soon get buried. :)

Echo. I love this place. It's helped me a lot through tough times, and I love seeing the interactions between new friends and new people. I'm maybe less active than I was (even though I have the highest spam count) but it's such an important place for me to be able to go to. I love the fact that it requires 0.00001% of admining/moderating (basically because Daz and Desmo do it all :p).

It hadn't been long since I'd rewatched it when things kicked off 'over there' and since its about people getting wacked, and some people were 'wacked' from a certain mod team it seemed accurate. It is kind of obscure but I like it :)

Too difficult to work out - mainly because there are a couple of ways to search for yourself, and because we dont have the web logs going back to day one.

Yep, you have to delete members to stop them appearing in the count, so the ratio of members to active members isn't representative.

MB

Chuckles
19-06-2008, 11:51
By my reckoning you've got 206 members who aren't banned so you've banned 17 accounts. So rather than 223 members (137 active) it's really 206 members (137) active which of course is a better ratio.

Am I right? :D

Yep, all mods and admins can edit each others posts here, although I believe it is a setting that can be changed. We could even delete each others accounts apart from one Super Admin account that is hard coded in to a file on the servers. Nobody can delete that account.

And they gave you access to it? ;D:shocked:;)

Desmo does seem to have taken over from MB with regards to breaking stuff.

By default, user ID 1 (The metro) is a hard coded admin. For a while there were two hard coded admins.

Is it possible to change one's user ID? (as in the number)

Delete the account and create a new one. That's about your lot really.

So I couldn't kill user ID #27 (a totally random example ;)) and make my account the new 27?

Burble
26-06-2008, 21:19
I didn't think you could specify a user ID when creating an account, I thought it just did an increment on the field in the table to give the number up from the currently highest ID.

Mark
26-06-2008, 21:21
So you want to kill Pickers? What's he done to you then? Come on, own up, that disclaimer won't do you any good. :p ;D

The answer is no. Well, not without paying Daz to reprogram the forum database for your convenience. :)

Burble, correct. For the geeks it'll be an auto-increment column in the users table or somesuch (cba to go look). :)

Desmo

Should be able to do it by arsing about with the database I suppose but there's not really an easy way to do it.

2) How many posts are made each day?

With the amount of drama on here these days we should refer to it as Drama with a capital D to denote the seriousness of the toys being throw from the prams.

I'm thinking we should produce a scale of Drama.. starting with, say, Eldorado at the bottom, and working its way up through Casualty, Holby Blue, The Bill, Eastenders and Hollyoaks before scaling the heights of something.

Do the admins think that it is difficult for newbies to become more established and familiar with the Boat Drinks old guard and long-serving membership, given that they (the regulars) all know each other so well outside of the fora?

The Edinburgh meet we just had says no :) I didn't know 4 or 5 people there, and they didn't know us, and we all got on great and went completely randomly clubbing together :)

I'll have option 3 please Bob. After some abuse of David (me227 on OcUK) it was decided that Cab Voltaire was going to be the best choice anyway and aside from the weirdos (non-internet related) it was actually a really good laugh, even they were quite funny in a way.

PvtPyle: I'm not sure how well I fit into the forum "regulars" or that description but I went along to the Edinburgh meet for the first time and had a great time, I think like many things you get out of it what you put in i.e. show a bit of enthusiasm and try it out then you'll probably do fine. Everyone who already knew each other was as friendly and as good company as I could have hoped so if there is a meet near you get yourself along and have a good time. :)

Had I known it was an Electro night you were going to, I would have come along despite having been up since 6am, done a full days work and driven over 350 miles :p As it was, it was pitched to me as generic student clubbing which screams indie and R&B which I cant usually be bothered with :p Never mind!

Hangin in there, mate. Trying to get into another house so I can start another project like yours. I've already found the donor carcass, just need a place to put it and the job to afford it. :D

And looking at the link in your sig, I REALLY need to become your US parts supplier!! You're paying out your arse for parts that I can get cheap as hell. I'm crying at the amount you've spent that I could have saved you!!!!

How crowded is the market for exporting US car parts to the UK? Could fix your "lack of job" problem right there....

Oh and we'd all know who you were if you randomly started a conversation with us. You'd be talking in a funny accent and you'd mention your truck within the first 30 seconds ;) ;D

You can't move house, how about your wood burner thingey and everything else you do. Or will it be to a similar plot size of land. We need more of your threads they rule!!!
