It's officially download day, but I cant seem to break my way into any of the download sites (must be getting hammered) - anyone help me out?

For those who dont know, Mozilla are trying to set the world record for the number of downloads in a 24 hours period with Firefox 3 - which was officially released today :)

Firefox 3.0, yeah baby!

I use it at work (Hardy Hardon Ubuntu installation comes with one of the RCs), and I'm still not convinced about the new address bar thing. It's great how well it searches but its a bit too intrusive.

I downloaded it a little while ago. New address bar is taking a bit of getting used to but otherwise happy :) I think I'll get used to it soon enough as I often use the address bar to store favourites rather than use bookmarks because it's just what I'm used to doing now.

Edit: Oh the irony. Just tapped in b on the address bar as pre 3.0 it brought up BD, and it brought up OcUK instead ;D

I just downloaded, installed and ran FF3 direct from the Mozilla site. Which makes For security reasons, we recommend downloading the latest and greatest version.on the first page FF3 loads up all the more amusing. :D

NOTE:

The version of the link Leo provided (at time of writing) comes up with a build date of 2008052906 (Help -> About), so just over 2 weeks old.

That is not the final release, which is running late, so I'm told. Guess we'll have to wait for a few hours yet (suspect tomorrow morning may be the earliest you'll get for doing a proper download)

Will upgrade later in the week when I've decided what to use to replace Google Browser Sync. They've dropped support for it :'(

Nicked from over there but in case anyone needs it.
To change the address bar back to how it was previously:
i had to add a new boolean to about:config to fix it...

browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enable

Set it to false.

Not tried myself because I want to get used to the changes first and see if it's still annoying :)

Never heard of Google Browser Sync before but that looked very useful! I've used FoxMarks for bookmarks but didn't realise there were add ons for everything.

When I type b I get BBC News, Boat Drinks and FF updated. For some reason the first two have a gold star next to them, FF updated doesn't though.

Doesn't seem to like facebook quite as much but other than that seems okay.

Haly
17-06-2008, 22:20
Gold stars denote if you've got them listed as a bookmark or not :) You can click on it to edit the bookmark.
I haven't had a problem with Facebook but I've read of a few others.

They changed it - again.

On the forums it works if there's only one button that responds to Alt+S. If there are two (e.g. when editing posts), it alternates between them. That's my only pet hate with FF3 - even the address bar has grown on me.

I have no idea! They might open source it, but it's not on the cards at the mo. Looking at alternatives for now, though most of them only do bookmarks.

Not particularly. Critical holes are found in IE and Opera on a routine basis too. Difference is with Firefox and Opera the bugs get patched in quick order, instead of several months it can take for Microsoft to release IE patches.

The timing of the announcement is highly dubious too, given the official release is only bug fixes on RCs that have been available for months. It smacks highly of the announcers deliberately holding back on the announcement instead of helping insure the release was as free of critical bugs as possible.

Hmmmm, open source or not, Opera has proved over the last version it has less critical flaws found than firefox, and unlike firefox all were fixed. IE is useless though i'll give you that ;D Inherently it shouldn't be generally with the open source nature, but most stuff points to Opera being more secure. But what is "more" secure really, its hard to measure, and tbh in the grand scheme doesn't really matter, so i'll get off my box :)

Mark
20-06-2008, 20:49
Just a shame that in their drive to be standards compliant, Opera sometimes breaks stuff that works for pretty much everyone else, eh. :p

The Alt+S thing is crazy-making. If anyone has a fix, I'd like to know, before I lose my mind, although my efforts with sed heiroglyphics tonight may mean it's already too late. :)

please post and let us know whay you go with - i loves browser sync
By the looks of things, Weave (http://labs.mozilla.com/2008/06/weave-status-update/) will sort us out (and a lot more potentially), but it's a long way off being stable to use right now.

Might give the 0.2 update a go for bookmarks only, and if that works ok I'll shift to FF3.

Lep - Imo it all comes down to market share. If people were using Opera instead of IE, then it would get ripped apart just as fast. It would get patched quicker though :D

In fact a very valid point, i'd completely ignored. Too true though, same with the linux/mac/windows crowd security wise.

Daz
20-06-2008, 22:34
Aye :) These days it's not even your own code - third party code/plugins can expose vulnerabilities that otherwise wouldn't be exploitable. I'm not really sure how you objectively measure the security of OS/core app at the moment!

The lack of Google Browser Sync is what's been keeping me away from FF3. I tried one of the betas a while back but got rid of it as I'm lost without GBS.
I'll keep an eye on the Weave thingy.

Daz, if you find a version that works well, can you let us know please? :)

I also find rebooting the router or clearing the DNS cache works.

I tried ctrl f5, and that didnt do anything, so i thought it might be that little flowery looking key instead of ctrl, and it started talking to me... very odd.

rebooting router etc... I have NO idea how to do that, I don't touch the router .... does that mean just switching the power off and on again?

LeperousDust

Thats something to do with missing CSS, for some reason or another. I don't use firefox so stay with me here. But when i was aggressively blocking adverts sometimes external css with the word ad in the title was blocked and hence wouldn't load. Anything to do with that? After flushing your dns cache too :)

Just another little thing on the Alt+S thing in FF. I know it's probably stating the obvious, but once you've hit Alt+S, because it highlights the button you can just hit enter to submit the post :)

jmc41
27-06-2008, 22:57
When I hit Alt-S I get the history popping up, I'm missing something here.

I've only ever seen those issues when the housemate is bashing the connection and it only half loads. Rebooting the router normally means turn if off, wait 15 seconds, and turning it on again. The only other option is resetting it - paperclip/small screwdriver into the slot and hold until the lights blink or go off. That'll reset everything though so is normally a last resort unless you have and know how to put all the setting back in.

Indeed, 0.2 came out today :) Trying to get it to work with my own DAV server but I cant figure out how to do it in this one yet.

Issues with some distro's Firefox builds, and the binary encryption component has for now removed support for PPC Macs. Still pre-release code but word on the street so far is positive - just have to remember that it's really alpha code.

You can still download Firefox 2. Infact they've just released 2.0.0.15 which you can download here (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html).

Little update on Weave - had some faff setting it up, combination of mis-configurations on my DAV server and the weave wizards dont yet cater for hosting your own server. Once I got it up and running it's been fine - not as slick as GBS at all (the way it handles tab restoration isn't great, and the sync when you close the browser takes too long, but at least they work) - but it hasn't broken yet, and it is very early says so you can forgive some of the deign choices for now - you'd rightly want them to focus on the innards at this stage.

Doesn't work in Ubuntu out of the box right now - problem with a couple of the libraries, the fixes for which are in proposed and work. Working fine on Windows and across the two.

Might properly make the switch next week... Brave!
