I don't understand how you guys get any pleasure out it this activity, never been able to do it, hated it at school when they made up run, it always felt really awkward, I'd much rather use a cross trainer and exercise my arms too, even when I had a gym membership I avoided the treadmills and although I enjoy walking outside wouldn't consider running unless I had too :D

are you James May? ;D
Well done on the running Kate :)
Yikes! Are you a Terminator? ;D
I've just started out and have a quick question, how do I stop/prevent stitch? My legs are ok and my breathing isn't too bad but I have to keep stopping because it feels like my liver is being stabbed with cocktail sticks, it's really frustrating. :(
It hurts the first few times. Just keep pushing through it and you'll eventually not notice it. That's what I did anyway and it doesn't bother me now. :)
MB - When you get to a target or whatever it is quite an enjoyable activity. It's fun to see how far you can push yourself and what your limits are.
Well done LostKat! :)
I'm doing just over 3km now. It's a lot for me but I'm managing :) Going up about 0.5km every week so will be ready for race for life in June :D
Thanks guys :)
Sounds like you're doing really well dogma. Keep at it and you'll be at 5km in no time!!

I got stitch just about every time I ran when I started out. I found that deep breaths help as does making sure that you're running up straight. Make sure you're not leant forward or anything. Lift your arms up in the air briefly just to stretch yourself out. If that didn't work, I just kept running until it went again. You get used to it eventually. However, I don't seem get stitch anymore *touch wood*. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps I've improved my running posture so I don't get it anymore. Maybe my body just got used to running? I don't know really.

You exercise your arms with running by pumping them back and forth to propel you along. They don't get left out of the pain :p
I'm not sure why I started running. I hated any form of PE at school, especially cross country. We were forced to do the 1500 metres every bloody year and although I did it (most girls conveniently forgot their kit if they didn't want to do it), it took me 16 minutes one year iirc. The only sport I really liked was rounders and that was only because I could hit a "slogger". I used to run for 20 mins on a treadmill at the gym, but only because the gym instructor put it in my workout plan. I hate running on the treadmill now. It's mindnumbing.
However, I've always enjoyed walking and love the outdoors. Running is also the only thing which really clears my head out and that's something I need at the moment with work being as bad as it is. Believe it or not, it's a stress reliever. Don't get me wrong, it absolutely kills me for the first 15 mins and all I want to do is stop. When I get into my stride though, I could go on and on. It's purely mind over matter and overcoming the "OMG STOP NOW" feeling is absolutely brilliant. I'm even contemplating a half marathon at some point
Actually, I think I do know why I like running. The gym does my head in. It's stuffy, boring and you never get anywhere on the machines. I love my classes because it means interaction with other people and it's always something different (unless it's BodyPump :p). With running, I can map my route and go run around a reservoir looking at ducks, or through the countryside. I just like being outside in the fresh air. Plus with tracking my progress I'm in competition with myself.. which is the best kind of competition for me :)

I'm far from an experienced runner but try taking deep breaths and visualising/forcing them right down in your torso - imagine you are pushing them down to your stomach and you might find that regulates you a bit more.
The only other tip I've got is to stop yourself tensing up as much, if you are quite relaxed then running is much easier. One thing I heard was to lightly touch your thumb to the fore or middle finger of your hands (obviously each thumb touches the fingers on the same hand as it before someone starts :p) and that means you shouldn't be tensing up your shoulders - apparantly that was what Emil Zatopek advised and well, the boy could run a little, so if it is good enough for him..... :)
Good point SPW. I was told to imagine that I'm holding one of those wafer ice creams between my thumb and forefinger so that it relaxes your hands and in turn your arms and your shoulders. Makes a huge difference and you don't return from a run with aching shoulders. Never ever run with clenched fists.
Also, try and tense up your abs ever so slightly. They don't need to be rock hard, but you should use your "core" whilst you're running. Stops everything slopping around and causing pain. Takes a bit of practice though.
I love outdoor running, especially along the estuary near me.
There's no other exercise that gives me that huge buzz at the end. Worth every ache for that high.
Was at the beach yester and I jogged with my dawggy across a good dozen beaches. I prefer running on sand. Much easier on the knees and ankles :) Would be more inclined to run down the beach than anywhere else.
Still not convinced I enjoy it at all!
Running on the beach is supposed to be very good for you because it's much harder, but very gentle on knees etc. like you say. I think it's fair to say that it should only really be done in a red baywatch bikini though :p
Well I set myself the goal of doing the distance of 2 marathons in March and I've just achieved it in the nick of time. Official marathon length is 42.195 km, which made my target 84.39km and I've done 85.49km :D
I also hit a massive milestone today by running my first full 10km. 10.19km to be precise in just over an hour. My personal goal is to run the 10k in July in less than an hour, so I'm really really proud of myself.
Well done! If you stay injury free the sub 60min 10k should be a piece of cake. If I were you, aim higher. You will find that you will run much faster on the day though a combination of excitement and adrenaline. After all, you have trained hard for the day and you will want to give it your best. Just don't start off too fast and fold at four miles!
Broke the 30 min mark over 5 miles on the weekend, averaging 5:53 minute miles (29:45). It is something I should have done a while back but never got around to. It is not really my distance and the savage pace and lack of margin for error makes it difficult. Have the Edinburgh Marathon looming in May . Bring it on
Bloody hell, that's a fantastic pace!! Well done :) How many marathons do you do a year then? How did that nasty 20 miler go too??
I've started incorporating a lot more stretching and warming up/down into my runs because I was getting pain in my shins. Touch wood, it seems to be working so far. I'll aim for getting my 10k to sub-1 hour for now and then see where I can go from there and have a look at other people's times in RW. Don't want to push myself too far.
There's also the Leicester half marathon in October... do you reckon it would be an achievable goal to aim for after the 10k? I'm not really interested in running a whole marathon (yet!!!), but a half seems like a good distance. Leicester is pretty flat too so I can't imagine it being a difficult HM.

Umm... I got us lost and we missed it :o My name is dirt! Edinburgh is my first marathon, although my mileage is hovering between 70-80 miles a week at the moment.

Yes, the half marathon is achievable and is a fantastic distance. It is a little more than two 10kms stuck together, about 21km. If you continue they way you are going you will have no problems.
Just think:
It, like the 10k, is a goal in itself. It is something that comparitively few people can do.
Your middle miles, when the initial starting frenzy has worn off and before the pull of the final mile or two are near, are your hardest. This is the same in any race and, to a lesser extent, training run. What you may like to do is break everything down in to smaller chunks. Take every mile/km individually and then break it down further. You end up thinking more in the 'here and now' rather than "Crap, eight more miles of this to go!"
It is easier to move form 10km to 21km than from 0km to 10km. You are now a runner! Why stop at 10km? The half is my fave distance and you really do appreciate the work you put in as you may be on your feet for a while.
Go for it.
Sounds like you'll be blitzing the Edinburgh marathon!! That mileage is incredible. I worry that I'd get seriously bored if I started training for a full marathon. :) I really don't know how you find time or energy to do all of that!!
Thanks for the motivation too. I've posted in the Leics Marathon thread on RW and general consensus is to just go for it. So I will :) Just waiting for entries to open now. I do feel that I could carry on going at the end of my 10k runs, so perhaps I'll start upping my distance in preparation so that I'm fully trained by October. Need to try not to be too ambitious though as I don't want to do myself any damage.
Oh and I had another, very unexpected victory this week. I managed my 10.2k in 58 minutes, a full 3 minutes off my previous time. I've hit the less than 1 hr mark. Hurrah!!! I think I have the little Chinese man who was running behind me at the start to thank for that, because I was determined not to let him overtake me and sped off, lol. I was very pleased to see that he'd vanished just before I hit the halfway point though. However, then some moron riding a bike on the pavement then tried to run me down... so I swore at her :D (well, she should have been on the road, especially as it was 6am and there was no traffic!)
Anyway, dead chuffed with my new 10k PB and will keep plodding along. Can't believe how far I've come since I started this thread :D
No WAY can I talk to someone whilst jogging along. It gets me even more out of breath.
I also have this one conquered now.. apart from when going up hill and for the first 15 mins of any running session :D
That's some brilliant progress. Congrats :D

Bloody hell Kate, you're doing fantastic ! :D
Excellent Kate!
I need to see a physio as my foot pain is causing me to walk/run awkwardly so is now causing knee problems.
I'm falling apart I tells ya!
Ouch, that sounds nasty. Any idea what's up with it? Hope it's not affecting your job!! :(
It's not affecting my job because I'm ignoring it as if it isn't happening!
No idea what it is. Some sort of ligament thing possibly. Hurts like buggery!
I'm so unfit, didn't even survive 15 minutes running. Even if I was going too fast as normal that's still shocking :-(
(My Mums comment of agreeing with me really helped).
Most people can't even manage 5 minutes when they start out. The thing is, if you're starting a running programme, you shouldn't be aiming for 15 mins pure running anyway. See here (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml) for a running plan to get you up to 5km. You need to build up your stamina slowly otherwise you'll try and fail to do 15 mins a few times and then give up out of frustration.
You're also right about going too fast - most people new to running do exactly that and wonder why they can't run for more than a few mins. Slowly does it!
Thanks for that, will be giving that a try.
Just didn't realise I was so unfit, I used to walk/cycle everywhere and then it suddenly hit me I'm off to Europe and will be doing a load of walking - in 3 weeks and didn't want to be the guy holding things up.
Still, hopefully if I can stick to this I won't be quite as lathargic. It's not like I don't do any excercise, I go for a stroll every lunchtime and always sprint up/down stairs at work (at least I don't take the lift!). I guess going with mates - atlunch who tend to walk at about 3mph instead of my old 5-6mph is having a detrimental impact.
It's amazing how quickly you lose your fitness & stamina when you're not doing much. Sprinting up the stairs and going for a stroll at lunchtimes won't really help build up your stamina either, which is all you really need to get you started with running.
If you feel like you can jump to week 2/3 in the plan, do so. Just make sure you take it easy and don't punish yourself if you can't get to the next level. Just repeat the week you're on. You'll get there and once you're past 15 minutes then it gets a lot easier :)
If I can manage 10km then ANYONE can start running (injuries permitting of course).

Listen to her, she makes sense. Take it easy and walk/jog to start out. Your aim will to have time on your feet, leave all the speed stuff until another time when you have a good base. Just get that time in and reduce any walking time until you can run non-stop for half and hour. Use that to build on. It gets a whole lot easier.
Lostkat, you're doing great! You'll fly though the course come the day. Well done :D
OMG, you mean I actually know what I'm talking about? At last!!! :D
Thanks for the motivation guys. Feels so good to be making progress and still enjoy it.
Did my 10.2km this morning 1 second slower than last week, so at least I'm consistent.. and I don't need a little man chasing me around to get my arse into gear :D
I want this 10k to hurry up now because I'm ready for it. I've had a look at other 10k's before July, but the dates aren't good for me. Should have done the Derby 10k the other week, but I was too late to enter.
Did a quick 7km last night, and entering the Moors Valley 10K weekend after next. Should be good! Not done an organised 10K before. Will be doing a local 10km route this weekend as a tester.
Good going all!
I did about a 10km walk at the weekend - to work and back. Think I rushed it too much as shins still aching now but at least I was able to keep going for longer. Definitely should have taken the time to strech down in work though, big mistake :(
Woohoo. I set off for a 7.5km run this morning and ended up doing 11.5km, my furthest yet :D I decided I wanted to explore a footpath that I always see on my way home and just carried on up the road until I found it. Don't feel tired at all after that aqnd just really enjoyed it. My pace was 10.2km/hr which is where I need it to be for a sub-hour 10km in July. I also took my earphones out as I was running on the road and found that I rather like the peace and quiet and sound of my own breath as I'm running along.
Anyway, I've mapped out a route last night which is 13km and was thinking "oooh maybe in a few weeks", but I'll give it a try on my next "long slow run" and see how it goes.
This half marathon looks more and more doable :) Only problem is they're not sure if it's running because of lack of sponsorship. There's one in Nottingham that's in September so I might go for that instead. Only annoyance is the £27.50 entry fee

Crikey Kate ! That's superb ! Well done :D
You've really found your thing haven't you :)
Thank you :)
Well it certainly seems like I've found my thing. I'm really enjoying myself and it's going well so far. I've always enjoyed hiking up mountains, but never in a million years thought I'd actually enjoy running. I still feel like a bit of a fake when I put my gear on and go out running... like I shouldn't really be there.
Anyway, I've just found out that the Leicester Half Marathon is definitely going ahead, so I'm just waiting for entries to open and then it'll be full steam ahead training for that in October. Only 3 weeks to go until I go along to the running club for the first time. ARGH!!!
Just did a 10km route out and around Alton with my dad. Had to run at his pace but I think I pushed him along in places! Did it in 57 minutes and 24 seconds which we're both pretty pleased with! Had some tough terrain to contend with and one massive hill which was a huge energy sapper. Roll on next weekend!
Edit: Noooo! Just converted the data from miles to km. It was 6.205 miles, which is only 9.98597952km!
14 metres short.
LOL That'll serve you right for blazing into my thread and running 10km in less time than me :p :D
Sounds like you'll be there in no time! I still can't get to the point where I'm really enjoying the run, which it sounds like you have. I was also very tired from 8-9km and only pepped up at the end because I knew where I was in relation to home.
Well to be fair, I was less than a minute behind you.. but that's not the point :p
I was dead on my feet the first 10k I did. I remember opening the front door, stumbling in and lying on the floor. Got back from my run today though and caught my breath immediately. Nothing aches this evening (touch wood!). I'm just absolutely amazed at the apparent increase in fitness level in such a short time. It does come, but you need to keep at it.
Enjoying it is key for me though. If I didn't enjoy it, I just wouldn't stick with it. Hopefully that'll come to you at some point soon. Are you racing next weekend?
Yes, Moors Valley 10K. I'm hoping the camaradarie will spur me on and the time will pass quicker. Legs are aching this evening after that run, they're not used to the distance!
Go Kate!
Am just about to call my physio as even just walking is causing me pain now! Bah!
Oh bloody hell :( Hope you manage to get it sorted. Not being able to rest it due to your job really can't be helping at all.
Managed it, not quite the 5km in 30 minutes but I worked out work is 3.44 miles away, if I take the longer route to go through the park and castle instead of running past huge traffic jams.
Anyways, between walking and jogging as recommended made it in 34m52s, just under the 35 minute target. Did a 5 min walk then 2/2, 3/3, 5/5, 3/3, 2/2 jog/walk for the rest. Had to run (lurch) the last 50m to make it in time tho.
Just got back from the Moors Valley 10K, with an unofficial time of 50:08. Quite chuffed!
That's excellent. Well done :D How did your Dad do?
He wasn't doing it, just helping me practice. I did it with a girl from work and her mate (oo-er!) - he got the exact same time as me because he was ahead in the last 50m and I sprinted to catch up, and she came in almost dead on the hour, so everyone was fairly pleased. My first medal too!
So what are you going to enter next then?
He's going to enter the Alton 9.98597952km as he's good at that distance ;D
Will either go for another 10K or maybe attempt a 10 mile. If I do 10K I'll want to beat 50 mins though! :p
10 mile is a good distance. If you do that, you may as well do a half marathon. It is just 3.1 miles/5k further
Starting my marathon taper now and finished with the hardest of training. Have a half mara on Sunday and a 5 miler on the following Tuesday. Will probably use them as some speedwork to complement the long runs I have been doing. Starting to feel tired on a permanent basis now. Two days off running is the longest I have had off since turning an ankle.
Watched my running partner get her first sub 40 10k on Sunday. Great experience! Watching the hard work coming to fruition is excellent stuff.
Hope everybody is enjoying their training.
Watched my running partner get her first sub 40 10k on Sunday.
Blimey, good going!
There's a 10k near me in 2 weeks time and I think I might just go for it. It's only £8 entry and I'd like to get one under my belt now. It's quite a hilly one and looking at past times I'll be one of the last people to come in, but hey.. someone's got to be last :p
I did about 28 minutes running today. Not good by anyone elses standards, but considering I was struggling to hit 8 consecutive minutes a week or so ago (I was doing 2 running/2 walking because I'm fine on a treadmill but AWFUL on the road), so I'm quite pleased with that. Only stopped because I had the dog and the field was muddy so I didn't want to go on my ass ;D
Still a long way to go though and 4 weeks to get there :/ I've been offered an incentive to finish under 30 mins so I want to do my best to get it.
Fantastic work Kitten, well done :D :D
Sending off my 10k entry form today along with.... my half marathon form for the Leics HM. Entry forms went up last night and if I don't get my finger out and do it now, I never will. EEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!
Well, I went along to the local running club tonight and had a really good time. They put me with a mid-speed group and they were the perfect pace for me. We set out to do 4-5 miles and ended up doing 6.3, so that's prepped me nicely for my 10k on 7th June. It's just nice to get some variety into my routes and just have someone to run with really. I've brought home a membership form so I can join up. £15 a week, which I don't think is bad at all :)
Brilliant work Kate! :)
Went out running tonight... realised that my usual run is 2.5k so technically 4 of those = 10k :/
I reckon I will be able to do the 10k, but will have to build on my stamina a bit more. I think I will just aim at completing it rather than running for a time.
BB x
That was my first aim Bubux and then all of a sudden I had hit my 10k goal before I expected to and had to set myself a new target. I'm absolutely positive you'll be able to ace 10k sooner than you think. The first 10-15mins is hardest and you've already done that bit :)
Cool! I will enter then! :D
*shivers*
(I am running for our Charity of the Year and as the Charity of the Year Co-ordinator it kinda feels wrong not to :/)

Hehehe, good point. If you're looking for 10K training plans, there are some on RunnersWorld here (http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=84). You'll only be able to see the 8wk ones because the others are for subscribers only. Don't think I'd want to train for a 10K in 2-4 weeks anyway though!!
They also have lists of the races that are up and coming to help you decide which one you're going to do :)

I thought it was bloody expensive !

Excellent! After you join, you will receive an England Athletics competition licence after a bit and you will entitled to money off races, approx. £2. It pays for itself after a while  If you add races as targets it will really help motivation to train and you will see your times tumbling. Joining a club is a brilliant move.
You may also get a funky club vest that makes you look sooo sheksy.
Training plans: There are dozens on the internet, just make sure that you select one appropriate for your ability.
Anyone who is concerned that they are finding it difficult just starting out should remember that it is the hardest part. You will go for longer, and faster, the more you put in. Also remember that it NEVER gets easier, it just gets faster ;D
Got my race number for next weekend. Hope it's not as hot as this. Can't believe I'm actually going to do it! :D
The club are affiliated with England Athletics and somewhere else and they said I'd get my card at some point to get money off races. The vest is grey with a diagonal black stripe through, so not particularly sexy, sadly :p

Grey with black diagonal? Heh, the one I'm in is white with a blue diagonal. Not very original! I wanted a flaming skull or a rampant tiger, you know, something classy.
Got Edinburgh marathon on Sunday. I bloody well hope it is cooler than it is right now or it is going to be rough :'(
Pretty soon you will be wondering if there is a better way to attach race numbers ;)
A rampant tiger would be extremely cool on a running vest :D hehe
How did the Edinburgh marathon go? I bet it was an absolute scorcher and really don't envy you at all.
Went to running club tonight and we did a speed session. 10 minute warm up run, 6 x 400m sprints with a 2 minute recovery in between and then 10 minute cool down run. Hard work but it wasn't too bad and I was quite pleased with the speed of my recoveries.
I also raided my pennies jar and paid my membership fee :D They seem to think I'll do OK on Sunday and have said they'll enter me into their women's league... eek! I'm also being lent a club vest to run in... wit wooo :D They were all a lot more chatty with me this week (think they were making sure I wasn't a 1 week wonder) and they're a really friendly bunch :D Glad I joined!!
Kate you are amazing! Where do you get all this energy to run?!
Up at crack o dawn to do 2hrs of classes then late nights...and running all the time.
I wish I had your energy!
BB x
Great work Kate, looks like you've found your feet :D
I went for my first run in a long time tonight....and the first on road for years. Did 4.17km in 25 minutes. Will try and stay out longer next time :)
Cheers guys :D Feels quite good at the moment.
BBx - I've absolutely no idea where the energy comes from. It's my rest day today though and I'm shattered. Hoping to get out first thing tomorrow again, so early night for me. I'm not usually a late night person at all. It's just because you arrived. I'm often asleep in bed by 10 on a Friday :p Exercising in the morning usually fills me with energy, but I'm very tired by the evening!
Well done on your run Jamie, that's an absolutely brilliant distance to run, especially as you've not been out for a while. Make sure you don't push yourself too hard and stretch out properly after.
Cheers Kate :)
I'll do the same run next time and just add a little extra to the end each time so I'm gradually upping the distance. Must admit I'm a bit crap at my stretching :( Although I did make sure I had a good walk around afterwards rather than just plonking my arse down on a chair.
Know any good sites with some stretching guides?
I use the stretches in a very good book I have called "Run for Life". It's a book aimed at women, but the stretches are very good. Will see if I can photograph it and post it up for you.
Well, I did my first 10k race today in the torrential race complete with thunder/lightning. Thank god the hail passed by just before the race :D My aim was less than 1 hour and I managed to do it in an unofficial time of 53:26, which I'm absolutely over the moon with. Think my official time was 54:09 (it takes a while to get over the start line), but I'll wait for the results to come out. I never thought for a second I'd do that well :D :D I had a pretty even pace throughout, which was good and did a slightly fast middle sector. Started flagging a little in the last mile but managed to pull a sprint finish out of the bag, helped by people from my running club cheering me along. They were proud of me :D
Oh and my running vest isn't grey & black, it's slinky silver and black. BLING BLING :D Don't think anyone got any photos because it was absolutely tipping it down.
That's a bloody good time! Well done. :)
Great work Kate. Wonder if I can work my way up to 10km :/

I'd be happy with 1km ;D

Congratulations on your first 10k, that's quite a bit better than the time you were hoping for so that must be very satisfying. :)
I'd be happy with 1km ;D
Aint nothing to it but to get out and do it :D
Course you can!
I might just one day :p
Furthest I ever went was 7km on the treadmill and that was a long time ago. I've not had a decent (3km for me) run for a couple of months so when I went out on the road and did over 4km on my first outing I was quite surprised and pleased with myself. If I can just add on a little loop to my course here and there I think I'll be building it up in no time :)
The first 2-3km are the hardest. After that it gets easier :) Of course you can do 10k, no problems :D
Well done Kate! :D I have 5wks till mine... eek!

You can do it put yo ass into it. You absolutely flew round the 5k RFL when we all did it together, so you'll be fine :)
I have 10 days to mine. Just went out for a run, did half an hour, nearly died!
Well done Kitten! (not on nearly dying, you understand!)
haha, i guessed ;D
Still, it's the trying that counts isn't it!?!
Trying to die? Just don't try too hard.
Burn baby, burn.......running infernooooooOOOOOOOO!!!!! :D
Just been out for my second run....5.4km :D
Pretty pleased as it's only my second run out and, to be honest, I could have kept going but Sinead has had a crap day at work so I stopped to make sure I'm home to cook dinner :)
35 minutes all in so I'm quite please with that.
Bloody fantastic. Half way there already :D Well done!!!
Cheers :D
I'm just going to keep adding little loops on each time to gradually build it up :)
Only mistake I made last night was to run up the steps outside Chicagos....that hurt a bit ;D

I hope you did the Rocky celebrations at the top? ;D
Good work on the running. :)
;D No, I didn't. I did look behind me to see if there were 100 screaming kids chasing me though :D
Maybe next time I'll run up the steps and then in to Chicagos....do two laps around the bar and then back out again ;D
DO IT!
While shouting 'AAADRIEEEEEEENNNNE!'
Well I did my Race For Life. I had stopped training beforehand as I didn't have the time. I was completely not ready for it so had to run and then walk some bits. Came away with the highly embarassing time of 40 minutes. I was expecting to do it in half the time! :(
You did it and that is the main thing!

Is that the 5k one? I'm still running fairly regularly and can't get under 30 minutes for about 5.5km (took me 35 yesterday including some walking). As Roberta says - you did it, that's the main thing.
I ran to the Millenium Dome and back tonight - was a bit disappointed to find out it was only 6.5k!!! Well thats the furthest I have run so far... only 3.5k less then I need to do..
6.5k in 55mins... I could have gone on but was conscious of time. This was just pacing myself too in the hot sun... didn't have music either so was damn bored! :p
Goodness knows how I'm going to make it to 10k!!!
BB x
Hey _dogma_, nothing wrong with 40 mins at all. Personally, I think you were ever so slightly optimistic in thinking you could do it in 20. Top female athletes run 15 minutes, so 20 is bloody quick! Well done on your time :)
jmc41 - Are you just sticking at 5.5km or working on increasing your distance? If you just want to stay at 5.5km but get faster, then why not incorporate some speedwork such as Fartleks into your runs? You should find that they will help and they're really easy to do. 10 mins of jogging to warm up and then pick a point around 50m ahead of you and sprint to it, then jog for another ~50m. Repeat a few times and then 10 mins cooldown. It really does work.
How's it going BBx? When's your race again?
I've had a couple of weeks off because I've been on holiday. Managed to go for a 6k(ish) run whilst I was there, but that was it. We did do lots of walking though, so I haven't been sat on my arse for 2 weeks. Back into things this week as I have a 10k in 2 weeks. Not looking for a PB because it's RFL and it'll be busy but I still want it to be less than 1 hr. After that, I need to start increasing my distances for my Half Marathon in October. Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things :)
I'm sticking at 5.5km, it's the distance to work if I take the long route through the park and castle so I tend to walk in and then run home 3 times a week.
I'll try to get some of the sprinting stuff you mention in, though I'm still at a ~60/40 jog/walk anyway!
In that case, I'd just concentrate on getting up to 100% jogging and sod the times. IMHO, 35mins sounds quick 5.5km if you're walking 40% of the time, so you may want to consider jogging slower. You might find that if you slow down, you can jog the whole distance. It doesn't feel natural at first, but it does work. Running too fast is a mistake that a lot of newer runners make, myself included. Give it a try.
My race is on the 12th July - thought you had already done yours!
My friend did a 10k this weekend and did it in 1hr 12 :/
Not sure I will beat that! Bit annoyed cos the entry forms ask you to put your approx finish time on it and someone said thats because they section you (faster ones at the front) so goodness knows what will happen as we don't get shoe timers.
5k RFL this sunday, if I am able to register on the day!
PS Bonne Vacances?! :D
BB x
If it's not a chipped race, then the clock will start ticking the minute they fire the gun, regardless of how far you are back from the start line. That's what mine was. So my actual 10k distance time was about 30 seconds faster than my "official" time because it took 30s for me to get across the start line in the first place. It's good etiquette to let the faster runners go first etc. Whatever time you get, it'll be a personal best so it's all good :)
Haven't done my RFL 10k yet, but I did do a proper timed "league" race a few weeks ago as a warm up. The RFL is the one I've been raising money for, so it's the "big one", even though the league race was probably more stressful :) Looking forward to it. Just going to enjoy the day :)
PS Oui, trés bien merci :)
I'm off out for a run again tonight :D
Did one last Thursday up to my sisters house. We were at the gym on the Wednesday night doing legs after a 3 week lay off so my legs were aching like hell but for some reason I decided it was a good idea to run to my sisters. 4km, most of it a long uphill ::/: I did it all though and whilst my legs felt really heavy, not once did I feel the need to stop. Getting quite please with my progress now :)
Got a brilliant app on my phone called RunGPS. It does all the usual tracking and uploading of routes to a website, but it also reads our your progress as you go giving you training time, distance, altitude, pace, etc. It's great and I've set it to let me know every two minutes.
i have similar - iMapMyRun - one of the main reasons I ended up going for the iphone. Just so seamless. I think Matt installed that GPS thingy for me on my winmo and it worked but not as well.
Heading out for a run tonight and the weather has turned scorching here
Anything I should do or keep an eye out for? Never run when it's this hot. I've kept myself watered well all day so think I should be OK.
If you're well watered you should be fine. Just make sure you stop immediately if you start to feel light headed or anything. It's a good idea to wear a hat to prevent sunstroke and suncream to stop yourself burning in hot weather. Oh and warm up and post-run stretching is just as important in hot weather ;)

Thanks for the advice, after a 5 min warm-up walk I tried to go as slow as possible and managed just under 27 mins jogging (solid except for a stone in the shoe).
Which I grant you is also a PB, and it is hellishish humid weather out there, and I had a backpack with stuff like jeans and my waterproof in it. And I felt like I was about to die and did indeed lie eagle style on the drive for a few moments after making it back
I think the main problem is I tend to walk pretty quick anyway so jogging at what must have been about 6-7mph when I walk 4-5mph seems odd. Still, worked so thanks for the tip, just gotta try and duplicate it now!
Excellent, especially in the heat. Well done :D
For some reason this thread is showing a 37th page, but every time I goto http://www.boat-drinks.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8296&page=37 I get re-directed back to http://www.boat-drinks.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8296&page=36
Agreed, it is far too hot. Went to running club last night and there were only a few people there. I went out with a lady who's normally a bit slower than me and we did just under 7k, which would normally be pretty easy. It took us 40 mins and nearly killed us both. Not good!
Came home and lay in the garden with a wet towel draped over me as I could NOT cool down.
7km in 40 mins is still pretty good going - certainly more than I can manage and as you say it's a nightmare out there especially with limited shade.
New PB for 10k - 50:28. Really pleased with myself as I wasn't expecting it at all. I was just hoping for <1hr due to the course being busy (RFL), hilly and grassy. Dare I say it, but I might have to start aiming for a sub-50. Not in the next one though as it's my super hilly home club 10k. First 6k is uphill... definitely not a PB course :p
Half Marathon training starts next week and I'll be cranking the mileage up slowly to get to the 13 miles. Quite apprehensive, but I know I can do it if I put the work in :)
All this from the woman who said she'd never manage to run 10k! Well done lady!
Great time. Having not been running in a few weeks there's no way I could touch that right now. Very impressive!
Well done Kate, that really is good. My running has also been pretty slack recently, must start getting out again ::/:
Understandable. It's so easy to fall out of the habit.
Off to running club tonight. We're doing "Snaking". It's supposed to be a 'fun' kind of speedwork... HA, yeah right!
SNAKING!!
· The idea here is to sort ourselves into the usual 'structured' night groups of similar pace.
· Groups then set off on the given route. The idea - to find a comfortable EASY pace that ALL can manage in the group for the duration of the route.
· Sort yourselves into single file during this period.
· After 5 minutes running (self-monitored) the person at the FRONT of the single-file shouts 'GO!' (HINT - you may want to fix it to be this person as this person gets maximum rest!)
· Upon hearing this (shout loud in a gale) the person at the BACK then has to get to the front of the single file
· Obviously to do this they must run FASTER than the overall comfortable pace the group is running. IT IS UP TO YOU HOW LONG THIS TAKES but taking a mile to get there is probably taking a Liberty! (Lee/myself will probably treat it as a flat-out-sprint - everyone should at least try to increase the effort, from the comfortable pace, by say 25%)
· Upon getting to the Front - this new leader does 2 things:
1) Immediately slows back down to the overall comfortable pace (THIS IS IMPORTANT!)
2) Shout 'GO!' to start the process looping.
i.e. in a group of 10 - only 1 is working hard at any given time - 9 are running comfortably.
· Monitor the spread of the group - if contracts too much no-one gets rest/efforts come too fast, if expands too much it takes forever to get to the front. Adjust accordingly mid-route please!
The end of the run should be as steady as the first 5 minutes (NO EFFORTS) so final efforts should be the top of Cademan Street for the 7 mile version and Morrisons for the 5 mile version.
The Principle CAN BE ADOPTED FOR ANY RUN OF ANY DISTANCE IN YOUR PARTICULAR GROUPS SO MOST CAN GIVE THIS A GO!
This session will get you used to running at varied pace and mirrors particularly what happens to us on Cross Country or Hilly road courses and also what happens to lots of us at the start of races (off too fast running on Adrenaline) and the end of races (suddenly finding a new gear at the finish and sprinting past rivals/clubmates at a pace greater than the pace you've ran mid-race)
The course is 7 miles!!!! WAAAAAAAAH!!! :p
My mate used to do that when he was in the Loughborough rowing club. He vomited.
Good luck!
Meh, only managed a couple of miles of it before 3 ladies (our of our group of 5) said they couldn't keep up anymore and dropped off, so just ended up running 5.5 miles with another lady. It's a shame there aren't more people who are just a mid speed in the club. It's either super fast, or super slow. Still, nice run :)
8.39 miles today. Woop woop :)
Just a wee update. I'm up to 11.5 miles at the moment. Had some trouble with my knees/legs and eventually had to get new trainers. It hampered my progress slightly, but I'm back on form now.
3 weeks to go until the big day and I'm really looking forward to it. So much so that I've already signed up to another half marathon on 13th December. I figured it'd do me good to have something to keep me focussed through the winter. I had this weekend off due to a beer festival, but I'm hoping to do 13 miles next weekend. I know I don't need to do the full mileage, but I want to. I'll then start tapering :D
You're doing amazingly well Kate!
And just to think you thought you'd never do 10k!
I know :D I've even shocked myself. OK, I'm not the speediest person in the world, but I'm not slow either!
Just entered the world's first Kilomathon which is next March. 26.2km between Notts and Derby. It's a nice distance to aim for after my half marathons. Only a week to go now... EEK!!! :D
I bought myself some running shoes today. No excuses - just gotta get out there and do it!!! :D
Yep you have. Remember, start of slowly with small distances. Run/walk if you have to and gradually build up your distance. Good luck!
The very best of luck with this - rather you than me though!
Thank you :) Just want to get it done now. I've got my race number, done my final big run and am all ready. I've suddenly filled up with snot over the last 12 hours, but I don't feel bad so it should be fine.
Been out yet Picky??
My Shoes arrived Friday, but I was down in Cornwall
Just laced them up and went for a strut in the garden - very niiice. Makes a hell of a difference having decent trainers - given that the only running I've done has been in every day shoes...
It does make a huge difference. You feel very bouncy and light. I hope you get on well with them. If you're after cheap kit, SportsDirect do loads of running stuff and they always have cheap Karrimor running stuff, which is comfy and decent quality. Make sure you're wearing something reflective if you're planning on running where there's no footpaths in the dark.
In other news, I completed my first half marathon today with a nasty cold. Before I got ill, I was hoping for a time of less than 2 hours. I'd put in the work and reckoned I could pull it out the bag with race adrenaline on my side.
Last night I still wasn't sure that I'd be racing at all. This morning, I went to the start line but didn't think I'd be finishing. I had a teary moment saying goodbye to my very excited friends. 1hr 59 mins later I crossed the finish line with all my girlies screaming their hearts out for me. Almost 12 hours on and I'm still buzzing. LOVED it :) Yay!!!

Oh God. I argued with everyone at work today saying you'd finished in 119 minutes.... 1:19. I'm special sometimes. They were telling me you were faster than Paula sodding Ratcliffe but I wouldn't listen and completely insisted youd done it :o
Hahaha, my face will be just like that tomorrow.
Hahaha. The first woman came in at 122 minutes, so I would have been a winnar :D I think I can safely say that I will never be that quick!
However, your colleagues are also wrong. Paula is a lot faster than 1:19. Her best time is 1:05... so tell them to stick that in their pipe and smoke it :p
So, a week after starting running (equating to three runs) I feel a little more confident in my stride and recovery time seems to be shorter.
Unfortunatly I fluffed up on my first run, and did too much, 30 mins of run 90s, walk 60s.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3266880
Second attempt (one day break) I did the suggested run 60s, walk 90s for 20 mins
TODAY (2 day break) I went harder and did 90s run 60s walk for 20 mins.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3266888
Sounds like you're doing well. Are you enjoying it?
Yeah I am actually. sometimes thought of it makes me think "oh no not again", but its all good once out there!
Yep, stepping outside is always the worse bit. I still think "urgh" before running club on a dark, cold night but once I'm there I love it... unless we're doing hill work :p
My local running club twice a week and then on my own the rest of the time. It gives some structure to my training and the social side is really nice too, considering I don't have many mates who live in the area :)
Inspired after all of Pickmeisters efforts, I went for a run tonight - first time in AGES!
I think... I picked a silly night to start though! I was going to do the whole "60 seconds running, 90 seconds walking" thing but half way through my first 90 seconds of walking it absolutely bucketed down.
Like... properly bucketing!
So... I jogged all the way! Not fast or anything, more like that kind of jog type skip you do when you cross the road and realise you may get caught by the on coming bus if you don't pick up your toesies! But it was a 20min sesh which I was kind of proud of - I used to pass out after 8minutes ages ago! lol :)
Was a tad stitchy by the time I got in but all in all okay and recovered very quickly (I remembered this from when I last used to run... out running once I started to wear I would go down hill rapidly but as soon as I stopped for a few minutes I could do it all over again. Weird.)
Despite drowning and having all my clothes pasted to me by the time I got home, I actually enjoyed it! I forgot how much I like running in the rain! I have to admit I don't LOVE running but yeh... Had been having a pretty crud day up until then and the run seemed to sort it out. Lots of tension just gone by the time I got home and stretched :) So will be keeping this up until I can at least afford me some local dance classes (I'm so excited... they look awesome!) If I continue to like it then will continue to do it! I just... get bored easily which makes me feeeeeeel the pain! Unlike team sporty things :)
*is a tad soft legged but happy* :)
Well done girly. You've discovered the secret of being able to maintain a pace without even knowing it. Keep it slow and you'll be able to run further. Distance before speed :) Glad you enjoyed anyway. I also find it's a great release from any kind of stress or tension. It all goes out the window when I'm running along :)
15.7 mile cross country race for me on Saturday. The weather will be horrendous, but I'm doing it with a cracking bunch of people from the club. We're not aiming for speed at all. We just want a bit of a laugh really and they do CAKES at the refreshments stops, which was our main reason for signing up. Just hope the indigestion isn't too bad :p
lol :D As long as it's not raining (which it wil be), yes :p

Nice one Kate.. It'll be 4 month until i can start running again.
I'm sure you have already as I've not read all the posts in this thread but please make sure you get a gait analysis profile done and wear 'proper' running trainers to suit. Most decent sports shots can do this and some are free. Runners World in Chelmsforsd do I know. Otherwise, in years to come, you're knees will suffer the same fate as mine.
Thanks guys :D It's amazing to see how far I've come in the last 9 months!!
Huddy - Not sure if that was directed at me, but I've had my gait analysed and have the right trainers for my wonky legged running :p
The 2 most important pieces of equipment for running - The right trainers, and a flipping good sports bra (unless you're a bloke :p )
I'm going to go to Runners World tomorrow. My toes are bleeding again and my heels hurt after running, like I've jumped off a high wall. I've got New Balance trainers but they're not running trainers...time to do it properly!
Did a 'fast' run today. 23 mins on the nose for 3km. Not great I know but at the end of September it was 25mins29 so I'm definitely getting there. The past 3 runs have been sloooooooow speed wise and my distance until I need to walk has over doubled.
Finally! Progress!
Wooo Kate :D

Are they a chain? I'm thinking I should probably get something other than generic trainers now I'm up to about 10-11 miles/week (depending upon this cold which I've had on/off for a month).
I don't think they are jmc41, no. They have an online shop, but I think their stores are Middlesex / Essex. You’re right though, you should definitely get yourself a good pair of trainers if you are running regularly.
I've heard good things about Sweatshop, who are a chain. They have quite a few stores over the UK and will have a treadmill to try your trainers on. Alternatively, ask on the Runners World forums. There's bound to be someone who lives in your area who can advise a good local running shop. There are a couple of small independents near me and the service/knowledge is brilliant.
Pheebs – The stability and shock absorber effect of the trainer degrades over time, so your trainers probably aren’t any good if they’re a few years old.
Pebs – Don’t knock yourself, that’s really good progress! Carrying doing what you're doing. Just make sure you get yourself some noo shoooos :)

Have been doing hill sprints with Will for the past couple of weeks, partly for the cardio and partly because I might as well be doing something else apart from just going to the gym. It's actually surprisingly good fun but unsurprisingly a bit knackering.

SHAT IT YOU SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGS!
Had my 2nd half marathon this weekend and took 4 mins off my personal best, despite a much hillier course and not feeling on form. Really suprised myself because I really didn't think I'd be able to beat my Leicester time. Dead pleased :)
Next big races I have arranged are:
Belvoir Challenge (Feb) - 16 mile cross country
Kilomathon (March) - 16.2 mile road race
Ashby 20 (March) - 20 mile road race
VLM 2010 (April) - 26.2 mile slog
That will be interspersed with some much shorter (5-8mile) league road and cross country races :)
This is getting hardcore!! :D

Congratulations, that's really impressive, you're not half getting into this running lark. :)
Right... I may have inadvertently signed up to a half marathon in may.... could be fun. Could kill me. We shall see! :p
HURRAH!!!! :D : D Which one?
You'll be absolutely fine :) Just slow it down for your longer distances.
Yeah - I'll have to work on my pace I think. I get bored going slow, but going fast is obviously going to wear me out!
Its the Plymouth Half Marathon... Chap at work has set the ball rolling and all but signed me up... might be a laugh if nothing else! :p
Anyone else struggling with the snow? Want to go out but would rather avoid breaking a leg.
Mon 4th Jan: 5.9km (32.5m)
31st Dec: 6.4km (35m)
28th Dec: ~9.5km (~50m)
Argh :(

Ice in Southampton finally disappeared & I managed a 3miler in about 20minutes this morning.
Journey, Lifehouse & Simple Plan on the go for encouragement.
What else do people listen to on training runs?
Actually, I must invest in a cheapo MP3 player, as I get bored!!!

We've got a 2GB pebble thing we don't use now because we both have iPhones.
If you're interested we'll post it down to you :)

Ohh! You got PM!
Well done camerajuan!!
I've got a 2GB creative zen stone. It's teeny, cheap and bullet proof. It's generally the same folder called 'Gym' of dance tracks, but on a long run I'll listen to something different. It was War of the Worlds last weekend :)
Thank god the snow is finally getting washed away. Did 6.5 miles last night in my trail shoes through slush, but it should all be gone today ready for a 5 mile race and run home (another 6ish miles) tomorrow :D
Loving my running at the moment. I'm very motivated with my VLM plan.
I use an iPod shuffle which is great for clipping on my belt or in a pocket - PG got me some amazing in-ear headphones for Crimbo which don't fall out / flay around when jogging so I can listen to music again :D I usually pop on something upbeat and aggressive that I find my legs matching the beat - tonight was Four Year Strong, the Bled and Cancer Bats.
I had a bit of a break from running as I didn't go out during the ice/snow at all - I've been both very busy and I'm ultra cautious about twisted knees etc after a cruciate injury a few years back.
Went out again tonight with no real 'plan' or route in mind, but felt I just wanted to get out there! Stuck my head down and headed on up the largest hill in the area to see how I'd get on - managed to peck away at it and felt stable (cardio wise) but found discomfort on the ...*ahem*... flabby bits near my hips (spare tyre area! :D). This soon disappeared once the ground evened out though- any ideas what this could be?
My second wind came fairly quickly compared to recent runs and I found myself circuiting the sea-front and running up and down each set of steps (rocky style :p) before heading home.
I'm not sure on distance, and not overly fussed either - tonight felt great and I've racked up another 55 minutes non-stop :)
Brilliant stuff, nice one Jingo :D Hmmm, thought on discomfort around your *ahem* flabby bits :p ... My first thought is posture. Are you maintaining a good posture running up hill or are you bent right forward with shoulders hunched? I had a tendancy to do that, but am very mindful of it nowadays. Also, make sure you hold your abs in when you're doing something difficult. We have a tendancy to push them out, which can lead to things hurting and again poor posture. They should remain under tension at all times. Another thing I thought of is are you swinging your arms about a lot to get you up hill? The extra motion might have put some strain on your hips.
I think the fact that it went away says it's nothing serious anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much. You're doing absolutely the right thing not focussing on distance. 55 minutes is cracking though, seriously well done :)
Going to be late for work, but will update on my cracking weekend's running later :)
Went out for a stress-breaker at lunchtime today. Was listening to an old Ferry Corsten live mix from around 2001 :D
I've not gone out since last Friday :( This is bad of me! Tomorrow I shall make up for it however! :D
I'm off out again tomorrow too - probably an early morning though to kick start what is going to be a very hectic day :( / :)
I think it will be a short one of about 20 mins but i'll up the pace a tad and it will be good to just be out there (getting out there is the hardest part after all! :p)
Yup, getting across the threshold is the worst. Once you're out there, you may as well stick at it :)
BAD Picky!! Get trotting!
Was out last night where I decided that the biggest hill I could find would be a fun challenge :p
I'm now not sure fun was the right word but I felt great and had racked up 1hr 5mins out hitting the streets :)
It would have been a lot longer run, but I thought I'd lost my back door key about 3/4 of the way around and found myself really REALLY upping the pace home from that point ;D
Nice to know I could do that though anyway! :smug: :p
Thats mighty impressive Jingo! I've not yet managed such a long run, but hope to over half term! My long(ger) runs have felt great, and the feeling lasts late into the evening too!
Yeah, you get a really big kick out of a nice long run. I'll be plodding for 16 miles at the weekend if the snow holds off... or maybe even if it doesn't :)
Brilliant run though Jingo, well done. You're getting back into this really quickly :D Pickers = HALF MARATHON!!! DO IT!
Pickers, perhaps if you ran slower then you would be able to go further! It's all about running time, not running speed for me! :)
Try running really slow - no matter who's looking etc I find I then naturally pick up the pace as I find it easier later into the run :)
Plus if you have races/events to do then it's perfect inspiration etc :)
lol @ me handing out running advice! I'm still a jogger and haven't been a runner for years!
I've found a nice slow comfortable pace for me - its just finding the time ;)
My last long one was about 50 mins nice easy pace, then 13 mins toward the end up to my "short run" pace, then the last minuture or two on the home stretch was a full on sprint. I feel as though I can maintain the slower pace for much longer, so this I shall try ;)
I already told him a million times to slow down. I think it might have sunk in eventually :D
I really REALLY didn't want to go out last night but knew I would face times like this at some point.... so decided to ignore such feelings and go anyway! :D
I had evening plans so just went out for a recommended four-and-a-bit-miler I found on the mapmyrun site- it was bloody horrible as the wind was so strong I felt it really sapped my energy but I just dug in and grimaced :p
I'm really not into working out minutespermile etc but as I knew the route distance already I was pleased to have done 4.3miles in 37 minutes; I am normally MUCH slower but I think not wanting to be out there and having a gig to go to got those legs going! ;D
How is your VLM training coming along Lostkat? And did you go at any slower pace last night Pickers? (:p)
What events/races does anybody have coming up in the near future? I have Lincoln in mid-march and are looking for as many as I can feasibly manage this year - 5k, 10k and possibly halfs are on the cards (fundraising again you see :))
Theres a distinct lack of mention of socks in your post Jingo. ;)
Well done for your running though! Good stuff :D
Hmm I've taken to extra socks... wonder if its fo the same reason!
I (or anybody else) shall clarify no further than the following statement: "I wear an extra sock." [the end]
I didnt mean to pluralise mine (either). Its for practical as opposed to posing reasons!
Crikey!!! I have no need for an extra sock :p
VLM training going well thanks. It's taken over my life somewhat :D I don't seem to do much else apart from work, sleep, run & eat at the moment. Loving it though. Running club tonight and we have a track session, so it's long speed reps. OUCH!! Not looking forward for it, but I know it's good for me :)
I went out tonight with a friend who wants to get into running beyond the tedium of the gym treadmill- They have never reached a second wind stage and always found themselves too exhausted after 10/12minutes to keep going, despite being a bit of a gym-goer.
I set the pace as very slow, and went off on a reasonably interesting (compared to treadmill) route for a planned 10/12 minutes outbound. At mid point I offered the option of a small hill, that we could turn around and coast back down if she found it too much, but she had found some respiro-relief by this point and pushed on through :D
We hit home at 24minutes and I'm sure she was chuffed to bits - she knows things will improve for her and is very keen to get further into running so I'm feeling good too :D
My charity running vest / trainer tshirt came through the post this week also so I'm even more motivated and really looking forward to my wednesday hour, and my saturday morning rural route :D
Sounds like she just needed slowing down a bit. Nice one. I enjoy runnng with others, especially if it's a slow one so you can chat.
Apart from my league races (mix of xc & road), I have a 16 mile cross country, the kilomathon (26.2km), the Ashby 20 and a half mara before the big VLM. Eek!!!
My 17 miler on sat was an absolute joy. Already have 18.5 miles planned for this w/e, which finishes at my folks' house. The good thing about the big distances is much more interesting routes. It's great :)
I'm planning a long slow rural run saturday morning so I can go some interesting near by routes that I don't have to worry about being lit!
I'm considering heading off and then asking PG to pick me up at my end destination - this way I shouldn't have to run over repeat ground etc etc :)
Don't know if this article will be of use to iPhone owners who run but you never know :)

Cool :) Cheers Jen. I'm still at the stage where I won't pay for any aps, but I do have iMapMyRun. My Garmin does all my pace/distance/heart rate stuff, but it's good to have something in case I forget my watch or the battery runs out.

Glad you are emjoying your running Kate. I've been interested in your progress. If you are enjoying your 17 miles runs then you have become quite an established runner.
I managed to run 100m the other day.. That's meters not miles :D
;D @ Huddy!
I'm running regularly 3/4 times a week now and comfortably cover an hour each time :)
I don't run fast by any means, I'm very much a jogger, but I'm still out there enjoying it and reaping the satisfaction and health/appearance benefits :D
I have a 10k in Lincoln mid march'ish and then I'm going in for an absolute SOD of a race - the Harptree Havoc; 10k completely offroad - hills, water, rubble, burning hay bayles and all sorts of trouble I'm told = should be fun even if I do come last!! :p
Emma's friend has started coming with me now also and runs between 25-50 minutes a few times a week which is great company :)
Got a major 'testicling' from my Dad that I was running in 4 year old Skylons :p despite only running about a year, then having 3 years off apparently they're now useless so I'm finding some new ones asap :)
Hmm. One or two of those might be useful for walking. I managed to 'run' (if you can call it that) 500m the other day (which is quite an improvement on my 100m-200m previous), but it'll be a while before I can use a running app for running, so walking it is. Thanks. :)

Well you're still doing better than me at the moment ;D :(
Hopefully be able to change that soon though and having been inactive for so long I actually feel really enthused to do more exercise than I used to!
I believe there's also a mapmywalk ap :)
Mapmyrun doesn't seem to like my facebook for some reason - ho hum :(. Went for a short run today and beat my pb for two laps of my local loop! I need to sort out my iPhone music playing problems as I'm getting bored after an hour and a quarter of running familiar streets... I guess I could run a new one for a change of scenary, but could do with more daylight to get out in the country.
Thanks Huddy :) Did am 18.64 mile race the weekend before last without my Garmin. Had no idea how I was doing and just ran to how I felt, but was very pleased with my time and felt really good at the end too. Dropped my mileage last week for a rest week and this weekend I'm doing a 16 mile VERY muddy, hilly cross country race. It will be very slow due to conditions and because we're running it as a group, but it should be fun :)
;D @ Huddy!

Runner... jogger... it's all running to me!! :) Don't put yourself down. Speed doesn't matter at all. You run to the speed you feel comfortable with. No point comparing yourself with other people because everyone's different. An hour on your feet is absolutely brilliant and you're obviously enjoying it. Keep up the good work. :) That Harptree Havoc sounds like fun. I'm photographing something similar called The Beast this weekend. It's 5 miles (I think) and they have water splashes, netting to climb through, tunnels and all sorts. Should be fun... to watch :p
Well done Roge. I'm quite lucky in that I have a fairly wide area that I can run, even in the dark. It definitely gets a lot nicer in the summer though. Why don't you try getting out on a longer run in the country at the weekends when it's light?
Roge - take a look at this and see if you'd be interested- I'm going to try and do it, after a good check of my diary :)
http://www.honitonrc.com/races/hippo/hippo.htm
good grief! I dot think I could take that at the moment! I really should see the doc about my knee!
Good going :)
Pickers - in general, docs don't seem to be interested in sports injuries. You'll get told to rest it etc. Personally, I'd go to a physio or have a sports massage if you're worried about it.
It's the Belvoir Challenge for me this morning. 16 miles of undulating, mud-caked countryside. We're running as a group of 3 (was supposed to be 6, but 3 are injured), so we'll be going sloooooooooow. This is just a 'time on feet' event for me really and is comparable to a 18-20 mile run in road miles, because XC is considerably more taxing. Besides, there will be cake stops along the way. Hurrah!! :)

Good luck! Pre-6am on a Saturday, far too early.
I did a much much *much* shorter run and got stupidly muddy just post snow last Xmas, much more tiring it was. Shoes took about 2 days to dry too.
Good luck and hope you don't get soaked into the bargain - it's not looking good from down here.
It was an absolute mud bath. Loved it :D
The weather was a bit drizzley, but it felt perfect really. The last long XC we did it was blowing a gale and bucketing down towards the end. Not nice trying to run across freshly ploughed fields with rain so hard in your face that it feels like hail.
FIVE :cool::cool::cool::cool:
Makes up for my pitiful 1 at the Seagrave Challenge and proves that my marathon eating is improving (you have to practice taking on fuel on your long runs) :D
Dry(ish) weather so went for a quick one Monday, 3.7 @ < 29 mins. Decided to try another speed one today (depite mashed after 3 days wearing in walking boots for 15 miles) so went from work, light pack, 5.02 miles, 39:57, wooohoo. Wasn't flat either.
I have to refrain from eating for about 2 hours before I run or get stomach issues. Mind you had pain everywhere on the 10 miler :P
[Edit] Last run before Oz/NZ, off for 3 weeks from Sat.
You run at a great speed jmc - I'm more of a jogger and focus on total time opposed to distance/mpm :)
Knocked up 55 minutes on Sunday across mixed terrain of mud, muddy mud, muddy slime and slimey mud :p
Mostly uphill including an absolute sod of a hill which I hate, yet gain the most satisfying wave of "NERRRR!" upon completion! :D Off out again tomorrow for an estimated ~1hr 15 in preparation for a 10k come the end of the month :)
Well I normally run a lot slower, 3.7 miles home is normally ~32-33 minutes. Major difference between the two! Also all previous longer runs have been just over 6 miles in an hour. Strapped for time with holiday prep so thought I'd try some speed work and not let myself get into a routine of never improving.
Speed work is a great way of upping your performance, well done :)
8.5 miles for me tonight. Enjoyed having some me time with a clear head. Makes a change from stressing over work, which is currently taking over my life :(
Ive not had time for a run in over a week... I really must try to get one in tomorrow or friday.. Kate - pester me if not :p

I feel your pain with work :( Can I ask about your times (might be commiting a faux pas or something here?) I know you don't run for time but was looking at a local running group and they had recent race times up, the new club record was 35 minutes for a 10k. I'd be rounding about the half way point.
Don't get me wrong - running on times/speed is brilliant if you're at that level :D I just find it demoralising as it highlights how much slower I am in general to everyone else ;D
My last 10k was 54 minutes ;D Watch out for speed-demon Jingo :p

I don't mind talking about times. I always try to stick to a certain pace when I'm training because I do tempo runs, slow runs, speedwork etc. so I need to keep an eye on what I'm doing. I also have a 4.5 hr target for the marathon, so I need to be at a certain speed. With cross country, I really don't care how fast I am though. I just want to keep going. I run for me and am by no means fast, but I enjoy what I do and I'm never at the back so that keeps me happy :)
10k PB is currently 48:52, and I nearly threw up over the line because I'd done the last 2 miles sub 8 minute miles ;D Half Marathon PB is 1:54:52 (08:46 min miles). My average training pace over 5-7 miles is around 8:20-8:50 min miles, although I'm slowing down at the moment because I'm marathon training. I did an 18.6 mile (30k) race the other week without my Garmin and ran to how I felt. I managed 2:50:22, which I was absoluely astonished with because I wasn't aiming to race it, just treat it as a LSR. If I could maintain that pace for the marathon, I'd be looking at sub-4hrs. It's unlikely though so I'm still setting my sights on 4.5hrs :)
My running club varies from the super dooper fast (<5 minute miles) to plodders, who are around 11-12 minute miles. Running clubs generally cater for a wide variety of speeds, unless they're one of the elite clubs. I used to go out with the slower group, but have recently moved up to the middle group :)
I went out for a run this evening not expecting much, but ended up going for and hour and 40 mins. I never thought I'd see the day! Had a bit of fun too, went out in the sticks, then ran along a soft grass verge alongside a dual carriageway, and subsequently had to plough through branches and brambles. nothing like a bit of pain to make you fee alive! Tho I did spend the next hour running around with a bloodied arm.. whoops!!
11 miles and I was ready to drop... Though my breathing was fine, my legs were going to jelly. Its so nice to feel confident in my lungs again - I used to get out of puff far too easily for my age and build!
Good times!
Since it's quiet in the forum I thought I'd pitch in. Did a 5K around Guildford on Thursday last week and managed to bugger my knee. I think it was the hills because it hurts mainly when I walk down stairs or down a slope. Never mind, it's on the mend and I'll hopefully be back out in no time.

plodders, who are around 11-12 minute miles
Oi :)
Oi :)
Nothing wrong with plodding. I'm quite partial to it myself :p Plodding I find inoffensive... it's when people start calling me a jogger that I get annoyed :D
Sorry to hear about your knee Jonny. You're doing the right thing though. Rest rest rest
Did 18.3 miles on Sunday, finishing up at my parents' who gave me cheese on toast, cookies, a cuppa and ran me a bath. Cracking :) It's the Kilomathon this weekend, which is 26.2km (about 16.5 miles). I was dreading this distance when I entered it.. seems like a walk in the park now... only 16? hehe. Ashby 20 next weekend. Tough, hilly course and my first 20 miler... EEK!!
Had no idea you were doing distances like that. Hats off to yer!
I ran the Kilomathon yesterday. 26.2km (16.3 miles) from Nottingham to Derby. Despite not feeling to great yesterday morning after a night of wine & bad food, I am incredibly chuffed with my result. 2h17m50s with an average pace of 08:31 min miles. Best of all, I came 218th out of a field of 1490 ladies. That's in the top 15%!!! Unlikely to ever do that well again. I don't think there were too many top athletes in the race yest, which helped my chances :D
My best mate who is insanely quick was 7th lady. She did it in 1hr47. AWESOME!!!!!! :D :D
And best of all? My badge looks like a Jim'll Fix It badge. All my childhood dreams have come true :D
That's a great achievement :D Nice one Kate :)
I have a 20 mile race tomorrow and feel slightly sick at the thought. It's only 1.4 miles further than I've ever ran before, but psychologically it's HUUUUUGE!!!!
you'll be brilliant. Just watching Eddie Izzard in Marathon Man. You going to go for that next? :p
Hmmmm, maaaaaybe not quite yet :p I've seen the first 2 of that and will watch the other hopefully later today. I felt extremely humbled by what he's done. It's an absolutely incredible achievement for a very experienced runner, let alone a 40 something man who's had 5 odd weeks training. Simply amazing!
Eddie and my gf are my inspirations for running. My gf put the idea in my head that anyone can do it. She wasn't one of these size 0 whippet crazy fitness junkies. She's a normal person. She runs 5k every other night. I was like "Huh. You can just do that?" I always thought it was this huge thing that you spend months training for but she just does it. She made me realise its something I could aim for instead of thinking it was a huge task.
Eddie reminds me that I can't give up. Just look what the man did. Marathon after marathon. When I'm tired around the 3 minute mark, which is pathetic, and I want to quit I remind myself of what he did. I pick myself up and carry on.
Since about Oct / Nov I've been training for 5km. I've gone from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Doesn't sound like much but theres a real jump from short bursts of 30-60 seconds to a few minutes. I can totally appreciate why Kate feels like an extra 1.4 miles is a huge deal psychologically. When I first started doing 2 minutes it was quite tough. Its not so much the physical thing its the mental thing. Gotta keep your mind occupied so you don't focus on the mundanity of running or on how long till I can stop.
In 30 minutes or so I'll be taking part in my first group run, a fun run. Apparently the fun part is that you can chat to people while running. What?! I can barely run let alone talk to someone. Instead of doing my normal routine I think I'm just going to go for it. With the support of others I'm hoping to just keep going. I'm curious to see whether its a mental or physical barrier I'm up against. I expect both. I fully expect not to run it all. But what I know is that every step of training I've done I've pushed myself and never really failed. Only times I've stopped were due to stitches. When the program has seemed impossible I've done it. So who knows, maybe I can. I at least want to run a mile.
Anyway, good luck Kate :) I'm have no doubt you'll do it. You're rather crazy to be doing so but then I think anyone who runs has to be a little bit :)
Good luck Pete. There's something extra special when you do a run with other people, it helps you to keep going.
Good luck Pete - Let us know how it all goes :)
My training has unfortunatly gone by the wayside a little... But I am hoping to get a short run in this evening in anticipation of a week with not a lot of time to get a few in.
Thanks guys :) Did it and felt great and wanted to do more. Next run on Tuesday. Yey \o/

Fantastic Pete, well done! You're doing brilliantly. Trust me when I say that you will get to the point where you can do 'conversational pace' and that point is marvellous because the miles just fly by. When I go down to the club on a Tuesday and Friday, I yabber all the way around the run, pausing only for hills. This time last year there was no WAY I could have held a conversation whilst running.
Today was a killer, but brilliant. It was a tough undulating course, which was 2 loops so psychologically very difficult to handle. A lady in a pink t-shirt was running next to me at 3 miles and we started chatting. We stuck together for the whole race, right up to and across the finish line. I was really struggling at 16 miles and she helped me through it by keeping me talking and keeping me going. At about 17 miles, we caught some lovely chaps up who said we could run with them to the end. They encouraged us past the last few killer hills and paced us beautifully, so I ended up with a time of 2hr56, which is more than I could ever have hoped for. I was aiming for 2hr59m59s (<3 hrs basically :p) and although the difference is only 4 minutes on paper, it's one hell of a difference between running 9:00 minute miles for 20 miles and running and 8:45 minute miles for 20 miles. Soooooooooo chuffed :D :D :D
Awesomeness peoples!
I just got back from a run... and I feel like it was a personal disaster - I expected a lot more of myself.
I am so surprised at how much difference it makes when the temperature is up just a few degrees (that, and I'd not long eaten lunch, and Im still recovering from illness)
For the first time in ages I had to physically stop, and I thought "I'm 2.5 miles from home, I'm gonna have to walk". But I pulled myself together and fought my way home for a 50 minute run. Not my best, but all things considered, I cant really complain - serves me right for being slack the last 2 weeks!
:p Time to pull my socks up and get back on it.
This week I've done 3x 5km. On Tuesday I did the full thing without stopping just to prove to myself that I could. Think I'm getting better at pacing myself. I plan to take a break for Fri/Sat. Sunday we're walking about 5km to an event, walking around that and then walking back. So easily 10km walking.
I think the only real problem I'm having is getting a stitch. I had one today around the 17 min mark so I had to walk a bit. Is there something I can do to prevent these? I've had them a few times now.
The other thing is, if I'm completely honest, I kinda expected to be fit now. I can run 5km just as well as my gf. I know healthy people who say they couldn't do it. I walked up a bit of a hill the other day and was out of breath. Shouldn't I be fit now?
I think the thing now is to push on and take minutes off the 5km time rather than pushing on longer distances.
