View Full Version : Someone tell me everything I need to know about Counterstrike.
I've got the original Half Life which I own, purchased, paid for and never completed.
What's Counterstrike all about? I've never played it. I understand it hooks into Half Life somehow. What [exactly] do I need to download/do?
Am I so far out of date that it's not usable and I need to get something else?
Explain to this luddite what it's all about. Use simple terms and links. Treat me as though I know absolutely bugger all about it, this should be easy because it's accurate!

Install the game, install Steam from here (http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow)
shout at me when it's done and i'll make a server (must find bots)
Nooooo it's not out of date.
Original CS (1.6) is much better than the crappy Source that comes with HL2.
What you do need to do though is get a copy of Steam from www.steampowered.com then it'll download a mass of files from the installer and check with you what games you've got. Tick for CS and HL1 and it'll download the relevant files and should ask you at some point for your CD key (it's been a while since I installed so I can't remember exactly I'm afraid).
Right, an explanation of Counterstrike.
It's a team FPS game. Basically there's two teams, Terrorist and Counter Terrorist.
You load up the game and connect to a server (there's thousands of them available) and you'll start playing a map. There's loads of maps too, most common are de_dust and de_dust2.
The point of maps beginning with de_ is that the Terrorists have to plant a bomb at one of two designated bomb sites, while the Counter Terrorists are meant to stop the bomb being planted. If it is planted then the Counter Terrorists need to defuse the bomb within a short amount of time before the bomb goes off.
There are other maps such as cs_ maps (such as cs_office). These are hostage maps. In these the Counter Terrorists have to rescue hostages from a set location and return them to their hostage drop off point (always by where you start the map/your spawn point), and the Terrorists have to stop them.
Maps typically last 30 minutes with a round lasting at most, 3 minutes or so, unless the entire of one side is killed or an objective fulfilled.
Unlike other FPS games such as Unreal Tournament, you have to be a bit more careful. It's easier to get killed and once you do get killed, you're out of that round of the game. Also sound plays a crucial point to the game, you can hear people running and shooting, and can pinpoint where they are if you're any good and got a decent set of headphones.
There's also some interesting recoil on the weapons so you have to get used to that too.
There's a point, when you start a round, you're able to buy weapons, armour and grenades by pressing the 'b' button. You are allocated money according to how many people you've killed, how many your team have killed, whether the bomb has been planted or defused in the previous round and a few other bits and pieces.
Just experiment with the weapons first of all, best weapons are the ak-47 (for the terrorists) and the colt (for the counter terrorists) but you do have to get used to firing them.
I'll have a look for some links for you now as I've probably just rambled confusing crap at you :D

Good explaination Jen. I got quite into CS:Source for a while (I never played 1.6 so have no idea what I'm missing), but I went away from it and never went back. If you get into it then it's definitely a very addictive game.
OK, I've done the Steam thing and accepted everything it's offered to download, looks like about 4 gig of stuff so it'll take a while as I've got other stuff downloading at the same time *cough* ;)
/edit
It's downloading:
Counter-Strike
Day of Defeat
Deathmatch Classic
Half-Life
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Opposing Force
Ricochet
Team Fortress Classic

TFC rocks, I prefered that to CS tbh
MB
I still have my original copy of HL and have Steam installed for HL2 etc. I was put off playing online by the amount of idiots but loved playing it over LAN. If someone from here is setting up a private server I'll gladly start playing again - I really liked just Halflife deathmatch, especially the level with the nuclear bunker.
TFC was a great game :) I played that originally before CS and it was really good fun. Pity there's so few servers around for it now although there's still enough to make it worth a game.
Day of Defeat is pretty good too although I never really got into it.
CS1.6 though, last Summer I played it sometimes for 12 hours a day :embarassed: Which admittedly wasn't healthy, but just an example of its effect on me ;)
Source is good but I just don't find it's got the same draw as 1.6 does.
As an aside: 81.19.209.5:27015 is my Clan's server IP address. Have a play on there if you want and if you have any trouble, i'll kick the gits for you :D I play as either Haly or HalyBadger.
Well I'm really crap at this sort of game but if there's a server I can attach to with people I know to just practise a bit and and at least work out what I'm doing without getting ganked in a few seconds then that'd be superb.
I didn't like any of the Feek options I was offered as a name (damn internet people stealing my name. I'm therefore AnjinSahn.
I take it all the things it's downloading are just variants on the theme?
Nope they're all different games thrown in with the package :)
Counter-Strike = one I described above.
Day of Defeat = WW2 FPS multiplayer team game. Bit reminiscient of Call of Duty.
Deathmatch Classic = just deathmatch, a la Unreal Tournament/Quake 3.
Half-Life = Half Life
Half-Life: Blue Shift = Half Life expansion pack which is a different take on the original story.
Opposing Force = another Half Life expansion pack
Ricochet = I can't remember :embarassed:
Team Fortress Classic = team based multiplayer FPS game where you have to choose from different classes, i.e you can be an engineer or a scout. Matblack may be better at explaining this because my memory's fuzzy.
Okeydokey, that figures, ta.
And the :Source versions are just a newer version of the same game which uses a different graphics engine?

Yup, they come with HL2. They have a physics engine as well as better graphics. But imo they messed up CS: Source because the skill in shooting seems to have gone out the window.
Huge contentious issue though amongst players :)

Yep, some new maps and stuff but essentially the same to take advantage of the new engine.

Graphics I couldn't care less about though when aiming is so over the place and a matter of luck, like it is in Source.
But like I said, it's an argument that will never end and I can't be bothered to argue it because it's all subjective anyway.
Ahah, I see the account name on Steam is not related to the game name, therefore I'll be Feek.
Signed into your server, Haly but nobody there :(
Yeah it's a bit quiet in the daytime. Evening is when it picks up a bit.
I'd join in but bit busy sorting a few things out first.
Other server I play on is 83.142.54.107:27030 but it can be a little hit and miss regarding the other players manners.
Oh couple of other things:
To drop a weapon or the bomb: Press G and it drops it to the ground enabling others to pick them up, or for you to pick up a different weapon on the ground.
To plant the bomb: select it by pressing 5 then hold down the fire button to plant it, it takes a few seconds so hold it down till it says 'The bomb has been planted'.
To get a hostage to follow you (as Counter Terrorist): go over to them and while the cursor is pointed at them press E.
E also works for pressing switches which you may come across.
I add your server to my favourites list but when I quit it doesn't save it :(
Hmm strange. Not had that problem before :s
OK, it works if I go to favourite servers in Steam rather than in CS itself.
Man, I suck at this game. Badly.
Everyone does when they first start :)
Even after 3 years I'm still not great compared to some of the people I play against.
;D I have odviously touched a nerve. Nothing like a bit of subjectivity a and thats nothing like subjectivity ;D
Eh?
It's not like I'm the only one that thinks aiming is stupid in CS Source ;) I just don't see the point in arguing over it because I will agree that is subjective because everyone has wildly conflicting views on what is the 'best' version of Counterstrike and they have done since the beta days years back.
Aye, this isn't a 'which is better' thread.
Of course it's not private, I was just trying to make sure we didn't get into a one is better than the other situation.

People will always have differing opinions and games and graphics cards seem to bring out the flame wars. They both have + and -'s I'd suggest you try both Feek and see which you prefer a for the rest of you lets agree to disagree else we'll have various people in here saying why other games pwn CS. As I said I prefer TFC anyway :p
Play nice :D

Leaped into a game with 10 people, 5 seconds later I'm toast.
Repeat ad nauseum.

Please try Team Fortress Classic, its 100x more fun :) and you get to respawn \o/

Loading it now with a random server
havent played for a while now but used to love it
dymetrie get a BD server sorted toot sweet ;)
would be good to do battle with the mighty Feek
The AK seems very accurate, and the FAMAS. I can get headshots spot on with those guns. Not sure if CS1.6 was even more accurate, because I never played it.
HDR in CS:S looks stunning though.
It's a bit hard to explain the differences. It feels very much different and I've noticed it tends to be people that go from 1.6 to Source that notice it the most.
I'm not going into it further because really they are completely different games that probably shouldn't be compared imo (And yes I know I'm guilty of it).
The FAMAS is a great gun, very underrated because it's so simple to get headshots with.
Nooo Feek. Don't fall to the dark side. Q3 > CS :D

How did you get on with TFC Feeky? :)
MB
The few games I tried it was much the same thing, spawn, move, die. Repeat. I even managed to get a few shots off occasionally.
Seemed OK though, but practise is going to be important methinks.
Damn,... this has got me tempted to give it a go now. I have HL2 and Lost coast which I completed with much annoyance (I hate completing games - it means it's over :()...
I might look into it when I get back from Cyprus....
Practice is pretty crucial in CS unfortunately. Worth it imo though, same with TFC.

Warning... Counter Strike can get too addictive :)
Really getting quite into this now, my own server is running so I can play with it and get the feel.
Jen, can you advise me on maps - I've seen some on servers which are just basically scenes for all out frag fests but with no ultimate objective and with guns thrown around all over the place.
Is there a list of what's generally accepted to be the 'top ten' of maps somewhere? What should I be playing with and familiarizing myself with?
Todays lesson - make sure your copy of CS is patched up before you waste an evening trying to connect to Feek's server

Jen's away at a Lan for the weekend.
Stan :)
Most important thing;
Hang back, everyone tends to rush in and obviously a lot of shots get fired, take your time in getting there. By the time you get there alot of folks will be killed or wounded, you will be fully souped up with armour and beefy guns hopefully and they should be easy prey for you to smash and rack up the kills. :)
How about a tip to enable me to succesfuly alt-tab back into CS? I always end up havign to kill the process. It's nothing to do with the pc build as it's happening on my new one too.
Back now :)
William's tips are spot on.
I'm not sure about alt-tabbing because I don't have that problem with CS, although I do with Source. My gut instinct says it's something driver related but otherwise I don't know :/
Map wise, you don't want to go on maps beginning with fy_ Feek. They're just killing/deathmatch style maps.
I would say the best maps to get into are the old favourites:
de_dust
de_dust2
cs_office
de_inferno
maybe de_cbble
There will always be servers around that will have these maps running :)
I actually quite like some of the fy maps, but the cs ones do nothing for me. I've got a selection on, not huge but it does include all the ones you said.
Any way to get bots into 1.6?
We need to set up a night that everyone can make. I was on the other night and Feek popped up along with some other unknown dude. Then Feek disappeared, I shot the **** out of the other guy and then I left :P

Thats what i thought at first but i'm now playing with a new CPU, Mobo, Memory and GFX card (ATI instead of Nvidia). The onyl thing of relevance i can think of is that i install all games to my D: drive then after a format i just reinstall over the top and keep all my old settings and downloaded content etc.
