View Full Version : Charity Fund Raising Idea!
This... is GENIUS!
I have been umming and arring for well over a year. My last idea was a BD calender but as so rightly pointed out to me it would be hard to raise enough monies for it.
So I have been pondering upon pondering and then pondering some more and then this... just cropped up into my head.
*drum rolls*
I thought I could roller skate across the whole coast of France visiting all the D-Day beaches enroute!!
Charity wise - obviously for a veteran charity of sorts. Not figured out a good one as only had the spandangle idea the last couple of days.
Good things about it:
1. Well.. it's not cycling/running or anything that's been done before (as far as I am aware), meaning *hopefully* I could get more coverage and thus more monies. YAY!
2. I could *hopefully* wangle some media coverage - South Today or something and get lots more monies! Yaaaaaaaay!
3. It's in France and I love France :D
Bad things about it:
1. Roller Skating. I haven't rollerbladed for... 10 years now. I *used* to be quite good (could do kerb skids and things) buuut... that was when I was young and bones wouldn't brake - they'd just bounce! On the up side - it would be mainly flat roads! Hurrah! :D (I'd have to train like nuts)
2. Would take about a year to set up I reckon buuut I have the time and patience to do it!
What do you think?!? Hmm hmm hmmm? Bit too mental? Would it work? Anyone know of any good charities I could support for it?! Contacts? Ideas?!
*loves doing challenging charity stuff*
I think you're lovely!
:D
Seriously though?! Good plan or no?!
Oh yes... and by random calculations... it looks like it would be around 360miles (ish). Not toooo bad then ;)

I was not expecting that. ;D
Do you ever consider the middle ground for anything Pheebs?! I can just imagine you getting up in the morning... 'Hmm, porridge for breakfast? No... Full English at Harrods' food hall?! Yeah, come on everyone, we can hop there by Sunday!'.
I imagine the cost of the trip could potentially outweigh the charity money unless you really got a snowball rolling on the publicity. Did you have any other ideas along a similar line?
Costs of trip I'm not bothered about. I can blag that pipsqueek (if we managed to get Richard Branson to lend us a couple of planes out to Kosovo a few years back I'm sure I can sort out a ferry trip or two) I can blag accommodation too though I would probably camp it where I could :D
And no! No middle ground! If I'm gonna do an event I want to do something BIG BIG BIG! :D
Big = more money = happy charity people :D
Plus big = a challenge = fun for me :D
Oh and I had an orange for breakfast ;) :p
\o I'll do it. Sounds mental :D

GENIUS !!!
Fantastic idea, I Love France & plan on doing a WW2 based tour to honour my Grandad & Lost myself.
Doing it on skates & for Charity is Superb, kudos to you
You'll end up with Superb legs as well, Bonus
This is just making me lust after the white disco rollerboots I've wanted for 10 years so much more.

Sounds cool to me :)
The whole (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_length_of_Frances_coastline) of the French coastline?

NononononOo!
My bad!
I meant just the D Day beach part! (saaaaay starting at Honfleur (I heart Honfleur) and ending near Quineville!) Or maybe ending in Barfleur! Honfleur to Barfleur!
Could be good!

I haz spotted z flaw in this plan.
Sand + Roller blades = Not worky :p

I was just going to mention that. I've always wanted to take up rollerblading since I was in Toronto. Everyone does it there, even businessmen in suits. I think starting with invading France is a bad idea though. However I like the idea. I'll follow in the non-rollerskate shoes of Robert Capa. He was a war photographer who decided it would be fun to join in on the d-day landings. I'll just take pics ;)

:eek:Haha. I was thinking the coastline of France was a little more than 360 miles.

I'd go on the road smelly people :p
Look... like so mebbe:

Heh, Honfleur to Barfleur looks a bit silly really as I would be blading a lot of the way no where near beaches :D Sooo... Ouistreham to Le Madeleine looks the best bet :D
People do realise I am being 100% serious here don't they?!!?!
There's a Chris De Burgh song in there somewhere...

Best ask Jeremy Clarkson for advice on dealing with the gendarmerie, just in case. I believe he has some experience. ;D

Pheebs, where is Le Madeleine on the map? Can't see it.

You see the little red dot below the Utah arrow - that's Utah beach memorial area and pretty much just behind it is Le Madeleine! (above Pouppeville) :)
Ohh beg your pardon - LA Madeleine :D
And Malc - hopefully not :( I would hope that if I endurance train I would be more lean and not really build a great deal of muscles (I hope... hope hope hope)! I dunno, would have to wait and see!
:D
It's genius though. Will look into it a bit more in the next week or so... throw some ideas around at a few people and see what they think!

I made the mistake not you (though you theoretically made the mistake too by copying my mistake ;D)
Charity wise I'll have to research. A veteran fund of sorts. Any ideas?
I'll come with you, drive and do the publicity, the write up later and the follow on book (with pics ;))... DEAL??
DEAL! :D
Anyone want to come massage my feet and legs at the end of each day?!

Somewhere, in a dark corner of Essex, a man's head has just exploded.

Hey Pheebs!
Great idea! As a matter of interest, what are your local newspapers? I could probably sort you out with some publicity if you decide to do this :)

Not the Fe-Mail Kitten? :D
*I thank you* ;D
The more I think about this, the more I love it. The more I walk up hills, the more I think "LOL, I will get half way up on roller boots and then just WHEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEE go backwards all the way down again ;D"
I think I'm going to want ski-like poles for this! With maybe little brushes on the end to sweep stones out my way ;D
Hahahahahaha!
This is fab fab fab!
As Kitten said Starscream - Exeter Express and Echo are down here... buuut theoretically I could wangle the Southern Daily Echo too as my parents are up that way... so I could relocate for extra coverage ;)
Anyone wanting to join in the fun and help out you're more than welcome to - be it photographing/writing/throwing water at me enroute so I don't collapse from heat exhaustion/cheering me on/pushing me up a wee hill/giving me a hug/shouting obscenities at me to make me go faster... it would be fab! I would say though, if you are serious about the whole roller blading then I would make sure you trained mahoosively! If it goes ahead then realistically we'd be looking at next year. :)
I plan on speaking with a couple of the roller skating society people today (if I get the chance...) and seeing what they say about it all. I might be able to get a few training seshs in with a couple of them to ensure I have the right technique and then find someone local willing to push me to my limits, cycling around with me. I will also try and find out if there's a world record anywhere for furthest distance rollerbladed and if the above distance is anywhere near it, it will be extended in order to break it :D
The Royal British Legion sounds like a good plan... though I do feel somewhat guilty for those who fought and were not British.
If I can pull this off... it will be AWESOME! I will intend to raise *shed* loads of money too. Though guys and girls... I will need like... uber amounts of support here :) UBER amounts!
Gonna have to pull out some old history books too! Something I didn't realise - on Sword beach, the first landing area was code named Roger! (Pickys name!) How funny!

Well I'm sat in the SDE office right now, so let me know if you want me to ask :p
Heh well... not quite yet! I need to make sure it's 100% doable first :D
But thank you! I will let you know when I know :)
I'd certainly be willing to help in whatever way I can :)
