Which tools are good?

I tried iPodifier but it was a gigantic pain to convert just one video and then once i'd managed that, as soon as I started to transfer the finished file to my iPod it started to reencode the file and deleted the one it had already done and iTunes was trying to transfer. So that was a bit of a fail.

What else can I use?

I've used Alive iphone video converter as recommended by a friend with a nano. Seemed to work a treat :)
That was for converting divx.

Windows, converting a mixture of XviD and DivX encoded AVI files mostly.

I'll give that a try Haly, cheers.

edit - i'd rather free stuff if possible, Alive is pay for or it only does 60% of the file.

If you have trouble finding it, let me know and I'll upload it somewhere :)

That looks a decent little tool, just what i'm after.

File in, MP4 out. Sorted.

Cheers :)

PSP video 9 is good as well. Has a 1 click drag and drop profile for ipod touch/iphone.

Question.

Does it reduce the size much if I use the Slow, Size option?

Because the first conversion I did was Turbo, Size and it came out bigger than the source file, which is going to be a bit lame considering my iPod is only 8GB.

Get videora

Use the power convert settle, set it to convert vids to Ipod 6th Gen, the file size will be much smaller than the original, i say about 1/4 of the size. If you convert it for the itouch, the size for some reason is close to or sometimes bigger than the source file. Quality wise, the difference is tiny, although you can tell the difference but it is very close.
