Quite happy for any criticism, these haven't been post processed at all, a lot of the pics seem to have an issue with a smudge but I had cleaned the lens at some point so I don't know if its on the sensor?

Very obvious on the right centre in this pic :(

That is sensor dust, its relatively simple to clean it off. It will only show up at realllly small apertures though (which is why you can see it on that landscape so much).

Take a photo of a white piece of card at f/22 and you will see where all the dust is, then go out and get a sensor cleaning kit (cheap!) but don't buy a rocket blower type thing, you want the tissue swab type :)

Thankfully the clone tool in Photoshop is *really* good at removing them, so your pics can be 'saved'.

Thanks Martin :)

What do you think of the pics though? Don't worry about hurting my feelings :D

I think the fourth one has real potential with a bit of PS :)

Hope you dont mind, had a quick play with this one, albeit in the GIMP so its not as good as it would have been in PS:

Of course I don't mind :)

You've made it monochrome and increased the blacks?

Desaturated, sorted the levels out, applied an S curve, adjusted the white balance and I think I sharpened it but the GIMP seems to be pretty poor at sharpening?

That photo was TOTAL luck, 90% of the others I took look awful, the light was very poor all week and although the scenery looked beautiful to the eye the pics don't reflect it :(

I'll have a look at the rest and see if I can salvage any but there aren't many worth keeping

The one thing thats jumping out there is the blown out highlights in the sky. I'm guessing the camera is metering for whats in front and its just not bright enough compared to the sky. Its quite obvious on the landscape shot, especially after editing.

If you shoot RAW you can rescue it by reducing the exposure or using the recovery slider in adobe camera raw. Also, desaturating to create a black and white is about the worst way of doing it. Black and white is as much an art as colour. Its a combination of altering various colour channels to create a look.

I really wish I'd shot this in RAW I'm sure something could be done with it :/

There's still things you can do in PS with that.

I've uploaded the PSD's of those two with the layers in so you can see what does what. I also applied some highlight dodging at 14% to the ground.

I wish mine were even 10% as good as some of those. Most of mine are suffering from grey world issues, mostly because most of the time it was grey, and besides I've noticed before my S3 IS has trouble with blues (common problem with smaller sensors); Been really disappointed with all of mine so far and have had to abandon a plan to do custom postcards. I'm praying they'll come out a bit when I use the bigger, much better, monitor at home, but your latter pics suggest I'm not going to win that one either. :'(

We both love that Pete I'm going to apply the same changes to the full res version and get it printed on a perspex slate :)

I know that, and I know that you know that I know that. I just couldn't figure out how to do that in the GIMP, so it was only an EXTREMELY quick blast.

Had I had photoshop to hand, the results would have been in much the same direction as yours.

I'm stuck with GIMP at the moment as well Martin, its no where near as polished as P'hop is it :( but I needed something which would let me do the resize. Its such a shame that photoshop is so expensive for the average amateur.

I know you know, but I didn't know if anyone else did. I know that a lot of knew people to black and white conversion use desaturate because it looks b&w. I wrote it for Matblack. http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Color2BW/#channelmixer Basically what I was saying.
