View Full Version : Monitor - 2407WFP or 2408WFP?
I now need to get a new monitor as my old Iiyama 19" square lcd is failing and I'm going to get a Dell 24" jobbie - I'm sure I read somewhere that the 2408 isn't as good as the 2407 but am I imagining that?
What's the better monitor of the two to go for?

I was really jumpy about going to a TFT. I saw them as a big step backawrd in quality from the 19" CRT I had. I bought a Samsung and I nearly cried when it arrived. Fortunately I sent it back.
Then came the Dells. Both TFTs you mention are fine. In fact, recent reviews really rate the 2708 but they are both rated 90%+ anyway. I'm very very happy with the 2407 I have. I think Tyson has the 2408.
The Dell 24" monitors are great, got 3 here, 2405, 2407 and 2407HC... all very good.
There is 1 here (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17895682) 2nd hand might be worth a punt.
I've got a 2408WFP on the way, it'll compliment the 2007 I've already got. Couldn't be without two monitors and my old Iiyama 19" lcd died yesterday.
Dunno if its too late but Dell has a special this month on the 27" 2709W HD monitor 1920x1200 screen for £439.
Nonsense :p its never too big :D
It is when you don't have the physical space for it!
Apart from that, I'd expect a higher resolution than that on a monitor that size wouldn't I? I know that 1680x1050 is rubbish on a 22" and would expect the same with 1900x1200 on a 27".
Can't say I've ever had any problems, and I run mine (2707) at below-optimal resolution as well. It's only 12.5% bigger than the 2408.
What resolution do you run the 2707 at, Mark?
Obviously as tft/lcd monitors have a fixed number of physical pixels, anything other than the native resolution will be a slight compromise in quality compared to a crt so I'm interested in what you run and how you find it.
1440x900.
I've found over the years that so long as you run a panel with sufficiently high resolution to start with, and one that isn't a cheap knock-off with poor hardware, then it's OK. Not as good as native, sure, but OK.
Not that I'd notice if it wasn't, mind. ;D

With the LCD's i've owned, i've found running a non native resolution to be fine in most cases unless you get silly with the res. It doesn't quite compare to native, but the scaling in the ones i've owned (cheap and one expensive) seems to have been fine :)
Pics when it arrives.
Dell monitors make me moist. :o
Not the best picture in the world. but it'll do....

Shexual :D
What's up with running a 22" monitor at 1680x1050!?
Nice setup Feek. Lots of dots. :D
I have the Apple keyboard, took lots of getting used to but I am happy with it now.

What you really want is my setup Mr Feek, 3x 24" dells, 2x Macpros, 17" MBP and finally a 24" iMac... I just need to do something about the wallpaper :o
Bloody hell, hw many screen can you look at once :p and 2 OCUK page !
Feek, how are you finding the 2408? I've got one at work and find the input lag very disconcerting, just in Windows use, let alone gaming.
Compared to my 2407 it just feels "sluggish".
Liking the dual setup too. Very similar to mine except I have a smaller Dell E198WFP as the secondary. Can't believe how useful the second screen is, especially now I've picked up a freeview dual-tuner card and routed an aerial to it - having the TV on the second screen is so useful.
Can't say I've noticed any lag at all with it, if it's there then I've just not spotted it.
Not going to get a tuner for my computer, I don't have an aerial on the roof any more!
i'm blagging myself one of these next week. worth getting the 2408 then?
Lag issues aside (obviously some are more sensitive to it than others) the Dell 24" screens are superb. Had my 2407 for over a year now and it's the single best piece of computer kit I've ever bought.
I've watched a couple of movies today and I've not noticed any lag at all but the problem I do have is getting the colour calibrated correctly. At the moment I've got a slight red tinge that I'm having issues getting rid of despite lots of tweaking.
One thing I noticed with my 2408 at work is the colour and brightness was all over the place first thing in the morning after it had been on all night. Leaving it on (but obviously allowing it to go into standby overnight) solved this for me.
I have also noticed that some colours, notably the red, is far more "vibrant" than it is on my 2407. I just put this down to the broader gamut of the newer screen.
I use Monitor Calibration Wizard on my systems to iron out any colour tints. Neither of my two 2707s have significant colour issues but an older Dell 1905 did, and this software sorted it.
No good if the problem is down to warm-up issues though.
