Spotted this on BBC news and thought I'd share it with you because it made me giggle :)

NZ judge orders 'odd' name change (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7522952.stm)

A judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

Judge Rob Murfitt said that the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing.

He attacked a trend of giving children bizarre names, citing several examples.

Officials had blocked Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit, he said, but Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence and Midnight Chardonnay had been allowed.

One mother wanted to name her child O.crnia using text language, but was later persuaded to use Oceania, he said.

'Social handicap'

The ruling, in the city of New Plymouth on the North Island, was handed down in February but only made public now.

UNUSUAL NAMES
Allowed: Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins)
Blocked: Yeah Detroit; Stallion; Twisty Poi; Keenan Got Lucy; Sex Fruit; Fat Boy; Cinderella Beauty Blossom; Fish and Chips (twins)

The name issue emerged during a custody hearing for the young girl - who had refused to tell her friends her name and went simply by "K".

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," Judge Murfitt wrote.

"It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii's name has now been changed and the custody case resolved, court officials said.

New Zealand does not allow names that would cause offence or that are longer than 100 characters, Registrar-General Brian Clarke said.

Officials often tried to talk parents out of particularly unusual choices that could embarrass their offspring, the Associated Press news agency quoted him as saying.

Check out the little box which tells you the names which were allowed as well :D

In honour of the judge my first born will be called Murfitt if it's a boy and Murfette if it's girl. :)

Calling a child Twisty Poi is wrong. I was unfortunate enough to suffer from this once and it was bloody painful and required the application of much ice.:(

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my mate back in school.

"I'm going to call my first child Quasimodo."

"What if it's a girl?"

"...Quasiorcor."

I'll have to get Faysh to post a brother and sis name in here as their parents gave them rude names.

I think its child abuse calling kids benson and hedges and violence. WTF!??

I thought Apple and Princess Tiamii (have no idea how the andres spell it) was bad enough.

I named her Jazmine as in Jazz & Mine.
When she was about 5 she came home from school & said "Dad, My teacher reckons I spell my name wrong"
I said to her "You tell your teacher that your Father gave you that name" & explained the Jazz & Mine bit, She was Well Chuffed.
She was just as Chuffed when I told her that Me & her Mum sat down on the Sofa & decided to have a baby & then went on to produce her.
No Mistake but Planned & wanted from the start

No idea for first names (think I need the man before the kids anyhow :p) but I know their middle name will be Michael after my Dad. Although not sure how to fit that in if it's a girl, but I'll figure it out :p

Some ridiculous names in that article though ;D

I'm not overly keen on the name but my Dad did used to fancy Michaela Strachan so it could have double meaning :D
Not too sure how keen my hypothetical daughter would be on the idea of being named after someone her grandad fancied though ;D

I always thought something along the lines of either Jessica for a girl, or maybe Joshua for a boy.

But nowadays if I end up having a child I think I would want names abit different, nothing like Princess Paris, but something nice that is different.

But that depends on whether I have one for not! Lol

Roberta
25-07-2008, 08:37
I've already got:

Kai James (means warrior king)
Rowan Lea (means meadow of rowan trees)
Beck Ashleigh (means stream running through a meadow of ash trees)

I gave them all more usual middle names so that they could use those if they didn't like their first names but they all do. Kai and Rowan aren't really unusual in Wales anyway. Beck is a little more unusual but seeing as he won't cut his hair and is pretty most people think it's short for Rebecca anyway!

TinkerBell
25-07-2008, 08:52
Roberta I love those names! It is a good idea to put more usual names as second names, I really don't like my name but I don't have a middle name, boo!

Tiggy
25-07-2008, 11:16
I've got...

Megan Iris- which means 'beautiful rainbow'
Toby Lee- which means 'good honour'

I quite like the name India Rose for a girl.

Lana seems to like the idea of calling her first daughter Jessica Rose which is quite nice.
If / When we go down the children route we were thinking of going with some Hawaiian names as middle names, e.g. Leilani (heavenly gift), Keona (God's gift), Okelani (from heaven), Nani (beautiful)

BBx

Also a page 3 model...

So annoying you have to be careful who the name is currently associated to... or not care :p
