View Full Version : Comfort Foods and drinks
When you are feeling ill/down/depressed/yucky, what is your primary comfort food/drink?
Mine is probably cheese on toast. I don't only have it when I feel like poo, but if I am feeling exceedingly down it is something which I will end up craving (esp cathedral city cheese nomnomnom)
If I am feeling nauseous for some reason flat diet coke will help settle my stomach.
hargan daz - praline and cream + root beer.
Mashed potatoes made with loads of cream, butter & cheese. And hot chocolate.
Not together though. Eurgh.
Lift Peach tea. Love the stuff. Drank tons of it when I was off from work post lung-op and now I find its immensely comforting :)

new york vanilla cheesecake. nom.
Chocolate milk shake. I'm drinking a lot of that at the mo. Not sure about food though, I tend to have cravings when I'm down and wont be relieved of the down-ness til I have eaten what I want.

I've had a good long think and I can't think of any particular food which I would call a comfort food
On the odd occasion I feel down, I simply get pished and kick myself up the arse and get on with it. I'm quite lucky like that. If something gets me down, I'll lob some single malt down my throat, go to bed, wake up in the morning and say to myself "Right fatty, let's get this sorted." If I'm ill, I'll whinge until I get sympathy and then feel better because somebody was kind enough to give it - job's a good un :D
Hot Cocoa made with Green & Black's cocoa powder and milk. I had some tonight watching "You've Got Mail". First cup of proper cocoa I've had for ages. Just fancied it.
Comfort food.... probably some good quality vanilla ice cream with crumbled bits of crunchie in it. Yum!
Pizza Express Sloppy Giuseppe - I'll eat a whole large one without even thinking about it (that's what she said).
Proper scones with proper jam and cream.
And for some reason, cereal. Just had a massive bowl of Dorset Cereals berry and cherry and it was delish!
Lightly salted Doritos with double layer of grated cheese in the oven...melted... mmmm...
I will also binge eat choc and crisps - big packet of.

Mainly traditional english food.
Sausage, mash and onion gravy
Cottage pie
Steak and kidney pud
Steamed pud and custard
Also - Spag Bol.
Similar to Bigstan - there's not one food I particulalry choose as "comfort food"... when I read the thread I thought "oh I know I know!!!", but then I realised that actually "I don't know" :o
Food in general - in fact I think when I'm down I just binge eat - as you know I can put away a lot of food so it ends up being a bit of a fridge clear up! :o

This stuff for me as well. Something hearty and satisfying. Add roast dinner with lots of gravy to that list as well.
You see for me it would have to be something readily available and easy to prepare... a roast whilst delicious and hearty would take too long for that "quick fix" that comfort food is all about!

Unfortunately it gets intercepted by my mouth between the freezer and the post box.
Good God, that looks like a heart attack on a plate. Sooooooo good though  Got a pic of a slice of it to see the cross section?

My comfort food is always alcohol...
What can I say? I'm simple...
My comfort food is always alcohol...
What can I say? I'm simple...
I hate to say it but if I'm ever stressed I'll hit the bottle and not even think about food. However, if I do actually want comfort food its gonna be a takeaway, Chicken Cottage makes a great imitation of a Zinger Tower burger!

That's rather depressing :/
That's rather depressing :/
That he always turns to alchohol or the fact that he's simple?
The former... being simple isn't necessarily a bad thing. :)
Proper Cornish Pasty for me always goes down well on rainy, miserable days :D
If I'm feeling hungover or ill, fruit fruit fruit, big-ass mixed fruit salad, box of cherries, litre of smoothie, love it. Works a treat as well! :)

Chicken nibbles ;D They're my favourite if I really feel down!
It tends to be loads of different things, depends why I need the comfort food!
A common favourite is chocolate. But sometimes it's mashed potato as my Dad always used to make it for me as a kid and would draw smiley faces in it ;D I love cold mashed potato sandwiches too.
Lately, after my Dad died, I've often had cravings for McDonalds. Not so much now but for the first month it was quite common. In the end I put it down to the fact my body was after salt after crying too much, and I never have salt other than with McDonalds as I hate the stuff. Probably a very good thing the cravings have gone now :p
Funny how healthy stuff never seems to be craved :D
Cauliflower cheese and baked potatoes!

That's rather depressing :/
Why?
What's the difference between having a few drinks when one's down as opposed to gorging oneself on chocolate or pizza or whatever?
Do you think that a quick binge on alcohol is worse than a pound of chocolate or a bucket of chicken wings or the like? If so, why?
I'm not having a go, by the way. I would like to know why you think it's depressing to get drunk when you feel down :)
Alcohol is a depressant, drinking alcohol when you're down just exasperates the problem, rather than helps. Other than that, I see no problem with it, in moderation naturally.

Agreed about the depressant properties of alcohol but I would think that gorging yourself on unhealthy food would make you feel bloated and uncomfortable and would cause many people to feel guilty - especially those who normally try to eat healthily - I would think that would be as likely to trigger feelings of depression as a few whiskies would.
Edit: Basically, what I'm trying to say is that excessive consumption of any food or drink isn't going to do much good and any short term high one gets will soon be replaced either by feelings of guilt, or a hangover. I don't think alcohol is any worse in this case than anything else (obviously if it becomes a regular thing, that may be something to be concerned about).

It's a reflection on my knowledge of Dym more than anything and not really wanting to air overly personal things on here I shall try and generalise.
Have some cheese on toast or a piece of cake (which for me are naughty foods - and I know I'm an exception as I take my diet boringly seriously) is a far quicker "fix" than drinking (seeing as I don't really drink anymore - maybe a totaly of 3/4 pints a month if that). I fear drinking for the wrong reasons doesn't help and can accentuate the problem rather than alleviate. Eating a tub of ice cream whilst not overly good for you in terms of psychological and physiological affects will be a lot less severe.
Alcohol used as a magic bullet is dangerous and leads down a very negative spiral.
Of course having a wee dram to loosen yourself up, or a nice glass of red wine just to help you brush away the problem is not a problem. However maybe I read too deeply in between the lines and read it as "drowning sorrows" which to me sounds very dangerous. At least with a bit of gorging of food can have SOME beneficial effects i.e. you're feeding yourself, and arguably will not result to as much damage both psychologically or physically to your body. Worse comes to the worse you can get rid of it ;) Also the ammount of food vs the amount of alcohol is completely disproportionate - drinking a bottle of wine vs having a fry up cannot be compared really... can it? I mean you're never going to binge on enough food to do you as much damage as you'd be able to drink surely?
I know you're not picking a fight Stan, I know you well enough by now!! ;) :D

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you Will.
In my opinion, the odd 1 or 2 day alcohol binge will do little or no long term damage to a moderate drinker as will the odd 1 or 2 day food binge to someone who is careful about the food they eat.
Problems arise for both when the excessive behaviour becomes the norm.
Prolonged bouts of either will cause physiological and psychological damage and I don't think either is any worse than the other. To my way of thinking, an obese person who eats to fight the blues will cause themselves as much damage as the heavy drinker who drinks for the same reason.
People who exercise moderation in either will be unlikely to cause problems for themselves as long as they don't allow it to become a habit.
I think our difference of opinion probably stems from our respective attitudes to alcohol. I'm not a moderate drinker by any stretch of the imagination and accept the consequences of my alcohol consumption. I tend to notice that people like yourself, who rarely drink alcohol tend to be more critical of it's excessive use and tend to focus on the negative aspects of it's use.
I agree that drinking alcohol to beat the blues is not a good idea - but neither is sitting with a double chocolate gateau and a spoon ;)
There is something deeply pleasing about a glass of good red wine after a crap day at work. I'll rarely drink more than about a 2/3 of a bottle spread out across a week but it just seems to drop my stress and let me know I'm home. I think in total we get through about 2 bottles a week.
Pretty much everyone goes out for a blow-out every now and then though, but I have noticed when I'm stressed I do it more often.
Depends on the reason for comfort food.
Ill - Tea and some lightly buttered golden brown toast
Sad/Depressed - When I feel like that I just don't eat
Cold miserable weather - Sausages, mash and gravy / Haggis, neeps and tatties / Haggis Supper / Cheese fondue

Well I guess we're at a stalemate! :D
I still stand that a binge session of drinking is worse on your body (and head in the morning) than maybe over doing it on cake or KFC ( :puke: ). I could dig up a breakdown of it if you're REALLY interested in it...? But without going into it, to cause legions and swelling and destruction of liver function (even though it regenerates) takes a lot less alcohol over the same period of time to cause yourself problems with a greasy dinner or triple chocolate fudge cake! ;)
However from a psychological point of view, comfort eating and drinking are both as dangerous as each other - on that I think we are totally in agreement, not the actual consumption but the reason behind "why" becomes more pertinent.
It's not just about my attitude to alcohol though as I'd never see a drink as a relaxing comforting thing as I see it in a very different context... as in one of inebriation and social cohesion.

Absolument mon ami :)
Tequila used to be my comfort drink. But nowadays I'd only have to look at a bottle of it and I'd keel over ;D
My ultimate comfort food and drink has to be cheese on toast and a cup of tea, all made by my Mum.
TOAST, I forgot toast. I bloody love toast, I do. :D

Just to cheer Will up, here's my other comfort food, which I have been cooking as far back as I can remember...
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o237/dymetrie/DSCF0653.jpg
That's a pack of sausages (cumberland), an onion, 4 cloves of garlic, half a pack of mushrooms, a can of baked beans and various herbs/spices/sauces (you can't see from the pic but it's actually piled up about 3 inches above the rim of the plate)...
It can actually serve at least 2-3, but when I do cook it it's because I'm feeling crap and I scoff the lot (there is currently an empty soup plate on the floor which may get washed up later :/)...
Whack in some buttered white breaded toast and nom... what a feast Dym! :D
BB x
rusks, mashed up in warm milk.
Isn't that what gruel is?!
chinese takeaway is also a good comfort food and it is what I'll be having tonight
Isn't that what gruel is?!
I thought gruel was water and porridge?
I was joking, I just imagined it looks pretty much the same - a white sludge designed to fill you up rather than actually taste good!

well it was pretty much sludge, but I had 2 wisdom teeth removed yesterday, so it was the nicest sludgey thing i could think of to have :D
I love rusks :D
I'm having what I usually have when Leon is out for the night... mussels in garlic butter with crusty bread to dip in. Low in calories, HIIIIIIIIIIGH in fat and full of gorgeous. I've just been for a run though so it's OK :p

Chocolate !!!
More Chocolate for me.
I'll have some More Chocolate.
I could be way off here but I think I might be noticing a pattern here. :p
If I'm feeling unwell, which almost invariably means a cold for me, then hot orange squash/lime cordial or occasionally Ribena is what I want.
I find there is something quite comforting about a nice baked potato with cheese and coleslaw but I wouldn't say I eat for comfort anyway, it's fuel primarily and if it happens to taste nice then so much the better.
Comfort food for me would be a big dish of macaroni cheese. If I can't be bothered cooking that then I love a plain cheese sandwich with a big mug of tea.
Hmmm I see a pattern emerging here :lipsrsealed:
Comfort foods for me include all those special treat like bits & bobs that my family used to only buy at Christmas time : Clarnico mints, Tiffin, malteasers and without a doubt
Honey Roast Peanuts & Cashews!!!! :D
When I was in my first year of Uni and I had the revelation that I could do whatever I wanted I went out and bought the most ginormous (it is a word :p) jar of honeyroast cashews I could get my cheeky mits on and sat watching dvds eating them until I felt most rotund!!
*reminisces*
Ooo - xmas foods - the cheese wrapped in bacon - I get the packs from tesco and can just nom them all :D :o :o
Cheese does seem to be a running theme for several people (myself included) for this thread :)

My fave comfort food is stuffed Chicken breasts with Buffalo Mozzerella and Ham.

Primula cheese spread with prawns. With toast or crackers.... it's not really important, they are just an aside :D
I actually prefer the ham primula, the prawn one is nice but lacks lil something - the ham one I can eat out of the tube :o t'is great on toast when you come home a tad worse for wear at 3am :D so is the philadelphia with garlic and herbs on toast :D
