I've set it up on a different PC and it appears to be working, and working fairly well.

I'd appreciate it if people could give it a try.

Sorry Hudds, wasn't trying to take over, this was a lesson in learning for myself as to how easy it was to set up a server. I'll probably leave it running.

If it's source then I won't be in unless I manage to pick it up very cheaply.

And no, it wasn't firewall. All I did was install it on the other PC and point the port forwarding to it and it worked. Ho hum.

Nope, HL1 isn't and HL2 definately isn't (same thing really, just a 'nope' would have done ;))

Would it run on a POS radeon 8500? I'm thinking no.

HL would. Min spec is a Pentium 133 and "supports a variety of 3D cards, but one is not required". HL2, no idea.

For a computer 'geek', this may sound wierd, but I hate using mice - if I'm given the choice, it's keyboard every time. Also don't know what I need (I have hardware but no software)

Got HL2 files all decrypted but it's taking ages to do the CS:S files and finish downloading. It's been on 76-78% since yesterday evening. :(

I would guess that coupled with your troubles downloading F.E.A.R that your PC or connection/hardware may be fuxxored :shocked:

I would get checking anything you possibly can to see if you can find a fault

Yep, E is the standard button for USE. I've changed my keyboard controls by quite a bit though :)

I'm not 100% sure but I'm 99% sure that CT's can't pick up a dropped bomb.

I've tweaked the settings on the source one and have set up a couple of bots for practise.

I don't think you can Desmo, the account works as a single log in whatever game you play (evern for running servers) as far as I am aware. Feek may well know more though.

The server is still up (both CS/S and TS) and a bit of stress testing while I'm running eve at the same time wouldn't go amiss... I may well play a bit as well later to stress test even more!

I've kept the graphics levels down but it's deffo smoothed out the gameplay. I think the processor is still a bit of a bottleneck for CS:S though. It's only an old AMD XP2000+ (1.4Ghz). Only guessing it might be that though.

OK i have my server configured and can connect up to it via the lan tab in CS but it doesnt appear as a server in the server listing and i cant connect to my external ip. Now i'm not sure if my router just doesnt like me trying to connect to my external address or something is getting blocked (although i see no problems in the logs). Think i'll need someone to check and see if it's visiable for them, will try and catch someone tomorrow on Xfire / steam friends.

Also RCON, i have tried rcon_password password followed by changelevel mapname but it doesnt want to do it, says it is not a server. Am i doing something wrong?

Cliffy, make sure you've got all the appropriate ports open in your router and as said, connect using your local address not your external address.

Also, run it from a command prompt, not using the GUI.

And if you can do it, run it on a seperate PC to that which you're playing the actual game on.

I don't know how CS:S works, but in Q4 anyone can vote on server changes (maps, game types and so on). I'll have a look into it tonight unless one of the hardcore gamers sees this thread first.

There should be a command line version of the server files, but I'm not sure about CS:S servers as I've only dealt with 1.6 servers, and when I made a 1.6 server I just used a copy of Steam.
Should be pretty simple to add an amxmod plugin enabling people to have control over things like map selection too :)

That's exactly the same site I used for both 1.6 and :S server setups, both are independant downloads and will work without Steam. 1.6 is about 300Mb and :S is around 800Mb.

I've got quite used to playing around with the server over the last few days, it's fun!

I'm willing to ask my provider if it's OK to put a game server on my box in London. Don't see why not as the box I'm on was originally a game server. I get good pings to it, so providing the disk-intensive stuff doesn't melt it (runs every night), then it should be good. Would have to be a Linux server of course.

If you can spare the twelve quid then yes, it's worth it. Mark, it might even be worth giving it a try and if you don't get on with it then it's not a great loss. If we're going to have our own server then great, I'll turn mine off but it'd be nice if Burbs puts one on with decent connectivity that it has a similar setup regarding the bots, etc.

I've not done much in the map selections yet, really only got some of the defaults plus a nice snowy FY map ;) Input from everyone would be good regarding a selection of maps and then yes, I think a single server for us would r0x0r.

I must say that I have been thoroughly enjoying the past week's CS:S fun :) Even last night before everyone joined in and I was just slaughtering bots (hahahahahah bots fell over :p) it was great. Then after I had cooked and consumed dinner and there were more people on the server it was superb, involving lots of giggly moments.

I also learnt a very important lesson, running 2 eve clients at the same time as CS causes it to chug a bit :(

A dedicated server for BD would be awesome and whether it's Burble or Jarp that set it up, so long as it's a good connection and we all have fun then it'll be ftw \o/

I sort of prefer 1.6 because of the lower system demand - When playing you don't need all the eye candy of source but I can't find a way to add bots to the server. If I could then mine would be running 1.6 instead of Source.
