You may commiserate me in this thread, I am the victim of the above therefore I cannot visit the gym, I cannot run, I cannot climb and I cannot hike. I have also missed out possibly the best of the foreign mountaineering season.

I feel sorry for you.

How did you do that? I may save some commiserations until after I find out whether it was caused by your own efforts.

Unlucky though, you could however still do some things at the gym I'd have thought. Some weights and those hand-bike cardio machines might be an option.

How did you do it? I have broken both my feet before, well just a couple of metatarsals and some ligament damage (you should see my feet now they're all over the shop!), it wasn't a skydiving incident surprisingly. Hope you get well soon.

I was running when I stepped on a discarded chav bottle, my foot immediately rotated 90 degrees and my weight came down upon the base of the 5th metatarsal giving it a healthy hairline fracture.

I've just never thought of touching those things.

Drinking accident?

My foots only been okay for about a month, 3 months ago I feel whilst climbing and snaped my 5th metatarsal like a twig

Nope, I've never drunk that much (I don't drink at all at the moment, work and gym take up too much of my time, and I prefer driving). I fell down a 25ft trench/ravine whilst hiking in the Alps.

Ok then, you've definitely got my sympathies, that's pretty harsh.

I wouldn't normally think about hand-bikes either but the idea of doing no exercise at all for months isn't really a suitable option for me so it must be worth looking into alternatives. Is your foot in a cast or some sort of neoprene boot/support? Just trying to work out if swimming could be an option as well.

It's the ligaments that cause a lot of issues though SPW - they tend to be inflamed and pull on the bones even when swimming and can be really painful. I hadn't realised that I had broken my feet, and thought it was just bruising or a slight bit of tissue damage. It wasn't until about 2 weeks after I had the xrays when walking was causing me all sorts of pain. To this day my feek ache pretty much all the time, but to do something about it would be too complicated and disruptive to my life.

Breaking stuff absolutely sucks. Six months ago I bust my leg and it still isn't fully recovered.

Maybe if you move a bit closer to him you'll find that your aching for him isn't so bad. ;D

That's a fair point about the ligaments, I hadn't really thought about it although you can do quite a lot in terms of just using the upper body for swimming (front crawl/breaststroke which are both ok).

That must have been fun - where were you and what happened?

Hiking/camping with some friends and family (who don't live far from the Alps) one summer in Oisans valley, my foot hold slipped as I tried to traverse a slightly steep incline, and slid down and fell down the trench. I wasn't in a huge amount of pain as I though I had just sprained myself, my friends helped me hobble to the rescue truck - we weren't that high yet, it was frustrating though.

Sounds like you were lucky - I was quite lucky when I fell. Strangely, my ass and leg took all the impact whereas I didn't feel my foot hit anything. I wonder if a muscle or ligament was whipped so quickly that it just snapped the bone. I'd never broken anything before so I didn't think it was broken, it was only after going for an x-ray that I saw the problem. Now I know what a broken bone feels like though.

I had only ever broken my nose and fingers before... the metatarsals healed very qucikly (they were just hairline fractures) it's the ligaments I'm still having problems with and why I get sore or painful feet - I get a lot of cramps now :(

Hi CBS, good to see you over here :)

If it's any consolation, the area where my tooth was extracted last week is causing me relentless pain. I'm on staggered painkillers, ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine plue anti-biotics and I'm due back at the dentists this afternoon to have an exploratory done - probably means washing the hole out. The hole is full of yellow ooze and there appears to be some blackened tissue. It's painful as I've said but it's also *very* uncomfortable - there's a real difference but it's difficult to explain :(

I can fully sympathize

I badly hurt my left foot when i was 17

being big and clever I rode a motorbike round a tight corner too fast and I got too close to a fence made up of steel poles , my foot hit them and bounced off about 20 or so at about 40 mph, it all happened so fast

the next thing I knew I was lying on the ground , I looked at my foot and at first I thought it was hanging off, luckily though I was just in shock and it was actually my trainer that had come loose ;D

Went to hospital as my foot swelled up literally twice the normal size, they found I had smashed a lot of the bones at the top of my foot, I was on crutches and off work for 4 weeks

I still got twinges of pain for about a year afterwards, the foot is also slightly misshaped, but only a trained eye can tell

Presumably not fit enough for climbing yet though?

If I break it three times I will know for sure that the Great Magnet is sending me a message
