Basically Vince Vaughan films are ****e then? ;D
BB x
Nope, dodgeball is brilliant :D
As is Wedding Crashers. The problem is he's one of those people who plays the same character in everything and it's hit and miss whether it works for that particular film. More miss than hit unfortunately. It's like the old idiom that a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Desperado
Good story, well shot, excellent music, good humour, wonderfully violent & a sneaky peek at Salma Hayeks' boobs.
What more could you want from a film?

Oh God, I bet I can guess what we'll be watching this weekend then ;D
And yes, Dodgeball was teh Awesome.
Belmit's got it spot on. Ben Stiller is the same in this respect.

TT3D: Closer to the Edge
Quite simply this is a documentary on the 2010 Isle of Man TT race but it covers a lot more than that. As a non bikist I enjoyed the brief history lesson on the TT and the coverage of the various riders so I could get up to speed but most of the film is focussed on the exploits of Guy Martin. I lack the ability to describe Guy but I will say that his is eccentric in a way that only the British can get away with and totally loveable.
The footage from the bikes and around the TT course is brilliant and terrifying at the same time, I didn't watch it in 3D but I can't help wondering what it would be like in 3D on a cinema screen, I think it would be epic.
You don't need to be a bike fan to enjoy this film though I suspect that an interest in motorsport would help. Highly recommended.

Agree 100% with Del Lardo on this one - really enjoyed this but won't be to everyone's taste. Actually watched it at a LAN event and everyone was stopping, watching for a few mins and then going "wtf is this!?" :)

The Thing
The original is one of my favourite films of all time. This is just a carbon-copy remake pretty much. It's ok I suppose but even the effects aren't that impressive and, for me at least, merely emphasise how amazing those of the original were back in '82.

Saw Puss in Boots in 3D tonight. It's pretty much what you'd expect, similar lines to Shrek...some really funny bits, and I love the cat, so what can I say ;)

Never seen it before but it was ace! Michael Caine plays it totally straight while acting almost entirely to puppets. Very funny.

Off to see this at the Cinema in London on Friday (aduls only showing too - no screaming brats!) :D
I'm not a christmassy person, but I love this film. Mainly for the muppets though. ;)
Was Brian Henson's first directing job too. Did a fantastic job.
Don't think it would be much different :)
Edit: Sorry, that was in reference to Puss in Boots being in 3 or 2d :)

Interesting. I loved it when I saw it. Just goes to show that we all like different things, I suppose.
The Inbetweeners Movie
Daft, cliched and predictable but what do you expect. It was still highly amusing and even the wife, who usually considers this sort of humour annoying rather than funny, found herself crying with laughter in some places.

The Warriors
Starring Michael Beck James Remar Dorsey Wright Brian Tyler
Thriller film
6/10 It's a decent enough film but I don't think it has aged particularly well, maybe it's because I'd heard too much about it beforehand regarding how good it was but I was left slightly underwhelmed by it.
Miller's Crossing
Starring Gabriel Byrne Marcia Gay Harding John Turturro Jon Polito
Coen Brothers' film
8/10 A really good film with solid performances throughout, in some ways just a pastiche of many previous gangster films but so well handled and done with such obvious reverence for the originals that it would be churlish to hold that against it. Gabriel Bryne puts in a great turn as the amoral anti-hero - it is however quite distinctly a Coen Brothers film so if you don't like their films I'd suggest deducting a mark.
Night Of The Living Dead
Starring Duane Jones Judith O'Dea Karl Hardman Marilyn Eastman
Thriller
4/10 I just didn't get into this film at all, I'm aware that in some quarters it is thought of as a masterpiece but I can't help feeling that nostalgia plays a large part in that. There was little to nothing that made me feel any relationship to the characters, the zombies weren't particularly scary and it just seemed devoid of any real interest. Maybe that's due to me having watched more modern and graphic films meaning this failed to hold my attention but I don't think so, I suspect it's another one where nostalgia pays a big part in its high rating.
Warriors....come out to playyyaaaayyyyy!
A film I don't want to re-watch as I can imagine it not ageing well as you say. I'll happily live with the memories :)
The Losers

Dead Denny.. whoops I mean Clay (sorry, Kari has been watching a lot of Grey's Anatomy recently), is a colonel in charge of an elite unit of soldiers who find themselves double-crossed by a somewhat dirty and well connected CIA agent (Max, played perfectly by Jason Patric), who arranges for them to die when they refuse to kill innocent children. Fortunately for the film he fails and the story focuses on their attempt to get revenge, aided by the mysterious Aisha (Zoe Saldana being.. well Zoe Saldana)
The squad is very generic. Chris Evans is the comedic geek role (but still a good soldier), Columbus Short plays Pooch the witty black guy, Idris Elba the angry big black guy, and Óscar Jaenada the mysterious sniper who has probably only a dozen lines in the entire film.
The plot isn't quite so generic, but still doesn't present any particular surprises. That said Kari and I both enjoyed it a lot and laughed quite frequently. It doesn't bring anything particularly new to the table but instead focuses on bringing a polished film.
My only quibble really comes towards the end of the film when they almost ludicrously set the film up for a sequel, and then try to add a feel good ending that ignores the consequences of that setup almost entirely.
Still I reckon it's worth a watch. Neither Kari nor I remember adding it to our netflix queue, so were a little surprised when it turned up in the post but figured it was worth a watch anyway. Glad we did.

Went and saw the new Sherlock Holmes on Friday and loved it :D they put more of the calculation/thinking scenes in which I though was simply brilliant in the first film and was sorely disappointed they didn't do more of throughout it.
Today I watched The Life Aquatic which was a really nice, really simple film - no huge storyline, no huge violence/fights/drama - just oddly pleasant :)

Alvin and The Chipmonks 3
Terrible. Truly awful and predictable. Megan enjoyed it, but it was basically a musical so she was going to love it anyway. Toby on the other hand was rather disappointed when we had a toilet break and he realised we were going back in to watch the rest of the film.
The only saving grace was that we went to the small independent cinema in Louth where it would seem it costs £25 for 1 adult and 2 kids, 3 small popcorns, 3 small drinks, 3 chocolate bars and 3 magnums during the interval- so lovely that they still do an ice cream interval :)

Karate Kid (2010)
This is the one with Jayden Smith in. Quite simply the biggest steaming pile of turd I have had the misfortune to put in the PS3. The yardie take on this drove me bonkers and after 35mins I turned it off (which included skipping forward to see if it improved). It was meant to be 2hrs 15mins long.

Utterly awful and nowhere near as brilliant as the first film :(
Random things that made no sense (children able to sneak out, mum left unguarded) and also the totally unexplained ability of Robert Carlyle in zombie mode to be selective about his hunting of a very specific target.....

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Just could be more impressed with this film. Absolutely loved every last bit of it, even though Cineworld apparently had a fire, yet didn't sound an alarm and just left us all confused in the cinema. Didn't even evacuate us before the fire brigade arrived and gave all clear! Even better they restarted the film "5 minutes back to make sure nothing is missed" to start just a few seconds before the rape scene! Just wow, seriously they haven't got a clue there...
In Time
Utterly fascinating concept which I found really intriguing and threw up all sorts of "oh yeah" moments. The film wasn't quite as action-oriented as I was expecting but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Plot was a bit formulaic and predictable but I still really enjoyed it.
For anyone interested, the basic concept/premise is below - explained very early anyway so doesn't really spoil anything.
Aging has been beaten. At 25, physical aging stops and your clock starts, with a year to begin. When the clock hits zero you die. All currency is time, you earn it, trade it, pay for things with it. The poor live day to day, hour to hour, whilst the rich are basically immortal.

Agree with this. Timberlake was brilliant, but Amanda Whatserface has no screen presence whatsoever and her character is pretty unlikeable. Dancing on a beach singing Abba songs = fine. Proper acting = Nah. Was very good, and I LOVED the concept, but I think it could have been a lot better with a different female lead.

I tend to agree with you. She was very pleasant to look at but a very weak actress. I thought she looked a lot like Dakota Fanning actually.
The concept was a good one but obviously full of holes. My main one being...
Why on earth would such a system be engineered so that two people could exchange time directly, with all the potential for crime and abuse that engenders. Transfers between people would obviously be allowed, but would be controlled.
Ooooh i thought she was a bit minging. Olivia was MUCH cuter !

Oh, forgot - saw a freebie of Coriolanus. It's hard to describe but a very brave concept - one which I think people will either love or hate. It's the epic Shakespeare power struggle set in modern times but using the Shakespearian dialogue. Very powerful once you can get your head around the language, but make sure you know what you're watching before you go. Voldemort is brilliant in it, Gerard Butler is good but seems a little under-utilised somehow, and Vanessa Redgrave is an amazing matriarchal figure. One of the strongest performances I've seen her put in. Oh, and Jimmy Nesbit is in it as well, really annoying character, played very well.
So yeah. It's a bit like watching a play at the theatre but up on the big screen. Hard to give it a rating really because it's so unlike most 'normal' films.

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a phillistine when it comes to these. I either like it set in it's original (or near to original time) with the language intact or set present day with the language modernised. I would like either but find the setting it in present day but with the old language is just jarring to me.
I guess each person is different, but I heard Ralph Fiennes saying he wanted to bring it into a modern setting so people could relate to it. But I think what makes it hard for many people to relate to it is the language, not the setting. I'm sure it's a good film and I love Redgrave, but pesonally I prefer it when they make the choice and either go traditional or modern and not try to go traditional/modern.
I'd agree Mubs. While there was a lot good about it, that's why I can't give it a mark because I just didn't think it fit. It should be one or the other. It is very clever though and I am glad I watched it, but I can't say that I'd recommend it. Tough one.

Solomon Kane
Starring James Purefoy Mark O'Neal Robert Orr Richard Ryan
Action film
6/10 It's not terrible, it's not great but it's fairly decent action fodder for you to switch off your brain to and watch as the titular character lays waste to near armies of men and magical beings. You'll probably notice Pete Postlethwaite, Max Von Sydow, Mackenzie Crook and Jason Flemyng in there amongst a few other reasonably well known actors and actresses and wonder why they were signed up for it as with the best will in the world it's not the most demanding of roles for any of them.
Dangerous Minds
Starring Michelle Pfeiffer George Dzundza Courtney B. Vance Robin Bartlett
Thriller
7/10 It's probably a bit too clumsily sentimental to be a great film but it's well acted for the most part with a good story.
I'm sure I've watched a few more films since I last posted but can't remember them offhand.
We watched "Drive" last night. Sooo not what I was expecting. Very gritty, extremely graphic at times:
Seeing someone's head explode into pieces, basically being scalped, after being shot by a shot gun, and a guy's face literally being caved in by someone stamping on it repeatedly... those are but 2 of the many OTT gore deaths
However, it was odd, the dialogue was brief and almost monoslyabic, and there wasn't much in terms of "action" and certainly not the car chases I was expecting.
It was filmed in a bit of a strange way, odd camera angles, and the music was much more akin to kill bill style, using lots of vocoders, and slightly "arthouse" theme to it - in fact the whole film struck of Tarantino-esque style. I can say I was glad not to have paid to go and see that in the cinema - not because it was bad, just because it was a movie that I was not expecting. Far more about the cinematography than the actual scene.
I can sort of understand some of the merits of the film, but it really wasn't for me. The plot was loose and unconvincing, and the story just didn't seem to flow for me - however I think that's part of the point, about painting the main character's slightly schizophrenic behaviour - I shan't say anymore for fear of ruining the movie for anyone else.
If you're looking for a stabby stabby, "arty" and cinematographic movie - great, if you want an exciting thriller with on the edge of your seat car chases, easy brain candy for 2 hours, then it's probably not the film for you.
In spite of that, I can see the merits of the film, but I really wasn't in the mood for that sort of movie.
6/10 - though probably owing to the fact that I wasn't in the "mood".

I generally look at it this way, however I got to see Sir Patrick Stewart as Macbeth in the West End and the setting was very eastern European / Soviet block, WW2, but with the original language. It seemed a little jarring at first but quickly came to add something of value to the whole production.
I've seen some great theatre productions with modern day settings, old language and vice versa, but I'm not sure it worked as well on screen. Dang, I can't make my mind up whether it was a masterpiece or a really bad idea ;D

Johnny English is back for more shenanigans. The jokes are predicable and clichéd but none of this matters as Rowan Atkinson delivers them so brilliantly that I found myself chortling away throughout the film and enjoyed it far more than I ever expected.

Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy
A spy thriller without any free running or car chases, what were they thinking? Well, I suspect they were thinking wouldn't it be nice if we made a well acted, well shot film that treats the viewer like an adult. At two hours long it often feels like this film is forcing you to walk along side it at a snails pace but I think that it part of its charm, we've got used to Bond/Bourne etc where some computer geek presses a few buttons and before you know it you can pin point a pin head in the Australian outback and in real life I doubt it's like that, it's painful, it's slow and you have to use your brain.
Not an easy film to watch and certainly not for everyone but if you are willing to put the effort in, you will get a great deal back out.

Moneyball
In some ways I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this, in other ways not surprised at all.
I don't really do sport and my knowledge of American sport is slim to none, I've been to a couple of baseball games in my time and enjoyed the experience but I don't follow it and the history of the Oakland A's is a complete unknown to me, so why should the story of the way they changed the direction of baseball in the early 2000's interest me?
One reason is that despite the fact that this film is couched in sport it isn't really a film about sport, it's a film about faith in other peoples ideas and ones self and the fact that there are new things under the sun.
No matter what you use as the vehicle a good story is a good story
I also shouldn't be surprised because there is something about the base passion which Americans have for sport which appeals to me, this doesn't seem to come through in British sport which is polluted with cynicism and as much bile as there is faith. Americans don't seem to have that and films like this Any Given Sunday and Field of Dreams and many others are amongst my favorites.
So basically I really liked this
8/10
Limitless
Enjoyed it, was different from a lot of the films I was expecting it to be like. Got the feeling they didn't know where to go with it towards the end though, but if they made a sequel that continued the story I'd be interested in seeing it.

Green Hornet
I don't think this knew what it wanted to be. Jack of all trades really, probably because Seth Rogen both wrote and starred in it and he wanted to look as awesome as possible. They should have separated those roles out. Christoph Waltz was very good but again never felt fully like a bad guy nor a funny guy, toying with both throughout. Cameron Diaz's character could've been played by anyone it was that generic.
Regardless, it was a better watch than Green Lantern, but that's not saying much.

Re green lantern v green hornet.
I thought both were mediocre movies, with "lantern" marginally the better of the two.
Still think Ryan Reynolds is a one trick pony though.
I found Lantern terrible because it played it straight like all the other superhero movies, except that the premise of it feels a further stage removed from believability. I'm sure it works as a comic but the whole 'whatever he thinks of he can make appear' is almost like it's from the mind of a child. See Axe Cop (http://axecop.com/index.php/acepisodes/read/episode_0/) for a version of this that works - it's an online comic created by a child and drawn by his older brother.
Hornet is ridiculous but at least it seems to know it. That's how I felt about them anyway, with no background as to what each of them were before I saw them.

Attack The Block
You know those fancy special effects I mentioned that budget films have access to, well someone forgot to tell the Producer/Director of Attack the Block. Not a horrific way to spend 90 minutes if you have nothing else to do but certainly not worth going out of your way to watch this film.
4/10
Attack the Block.
Utter Tosh 2/10 Hated all the characters bar one and the visitors looked like the 'hug in a mug' from the old bachelors ads crossed with a fancy dress shop gorilla. Least scary thing I've ever seen (although admittedly, I'd not want to wake and find one standing at the end of my bed)
gutted they all didn't get mashed by the aliens
We watched this, this afternoon, and I must say that I have to disagree completely with both these reviews as we absolutely loved it!
The story had a good pace, the script was well put together, the special effects were nicely understated (so as to not detract from the dialogue) and fitted perfectly with the tongue in cheek undertone throughout.
Very impressed with Mr Cornish's first big screen outing, at the helm :)
9/10
Four Lions
Absolutely hilarious most of the way through with serious undertones. It had me screaming with laughter, but has also made me really think about that way of life. I think it was very well done. 8/10
Mirrors - slow start, creepy middle, odd actiony section, twisted end
Did keep thinking of Kiefer as the guy from Lost Boys though (think thats why I never got into 24)
Seven Pounds
Starring Will Smith as a guy who's wife has died, he decides to help seven people in their lives before committing suicide. The initial story sounded intriguing but the film just turned out to be rather dull. There was just nothing there, I didn't really care about the characters or even the main lead and I only watched it to the end just to see what it was all about but otherwise I could have happily turned it off half way through and never even thought about it again. A shame as I think the story line had potential but it just didn't deliver.
2/10
TT3D Closer to the Edge
In essence a documentary about the tt motorbike road race they do in the isle of man.
Gutted I didn't see this in 3d... Really great to watch if you're into bikes and racing. Guy Martin is utterly hilarious and it's a good insight into the love and drive for the race.
Great filming too :)
I'd give it a 9/10 for a documentary film....
Not sure what non bikey people would think, I think it's funny and interesting enough to entertain but at sme time I think hmmm if some one told me to watch a documentary on the grand national I'd be like "hmmm yeh sounds great ... *rollyeyes*" ;)
Nb. Was watching after the consumption of absinthe!
Random... I just this minute finished watching the exact same film (TT3D Closer to the Edge) and came here to post about it!
9/10 from me too. That Guy Martin, what a card, got to love him. Great documentary, one problem is now I want to go and see the TT in person. Add that to the bucket list along with seeing an F1 GP at one of of my favourite tracks.

The Time Travellers Wife
Hmmmm... interesting film, full of paradox and thought provoking. Amusing in some areas, heartbreaking in others. Good acting and nicely shot. I just felt that a few areas were not so well explained and a few avenues were not well explored (although that could have been to avoid the usual time travel cliches). I did have to explain a few parts to Sue as she didn't "get it" initially.
I'll give it a decent 7.5/10
It just needed a little more explaination in parts and the tying up fo a few loose ends to make it, imho, an excellent film.

He's a singer/rapper and also played the main thug in Harry Brown.
I found Harry Brown sensationalist nonsense personally and very overrated. It is very depressing but it feels like something a Daily Mail reader would write!
I say that with the slightly bizarre 'honour' of regularly visiting tower blocks much like that in London years ago and being stuck in one during a riot outside until the police brought it under control :p Still felt over the top to me but in a dangerous sort of way that means you know some idiots will mutter how youths are actually all like that. Certainly saw some strange people at Blockbuster who thought it reinforced their views :/

J Edgar Hoover.
Complete garbage & I was hoping for good things after enjoying Gran Torino that much I bought it.
Decaprio as Hoover always bothered me but watching it is a Nightmare, The Lad can't raise his voice without falling back into that teenage high pitch crap which is just not Hoover. The story portrayed of Hoover is even more Garbage & they touch on his perversions in such a watered down way the whole film loses any validity. The whole film just brushes who he was & what he was about. Even the make up is crap & the main actors are left looking like comic plastic men. I honestly cannot remember the last time I watched such a complete an utter load of crap.
Completely dissapointed in Eastwood I didn't think he would make such a weak film.

I'm actually not sure if I enjoyed it or not! A decent storyline, good concept, fairly predictable though. I'd go 5/10.
Alice in Wonderland (the Tim Burton one!)
Lewis Carrolls books are my favourite, and I enjoy the films too. This wasn't what I was expecting, but I think it was well done and had excellent characters.
I wanted to stroke the Cheshire cat, he was so fluffy! The usual stuff was wrong (uses bit from the Looking Glass as well, and merged the red queen with the queen of hearts) but I enjoyed it.
8/10
Hall Pass
I liked the usual American comedy funny bits, but generally the concept made me a bit squeamish and it was horribly generalistic and sexist.
6/10 for the comedy.
Woman in Black 8/10
Really loved this. Definitely a 'see at the cinema' movie, the 'jumpy' bits are very cleverly done and often sort of staggered so you think it's over, but it isn't. Lots of 'corner of the eye' movement too. Don't think it will transfer as well to the small screen though, although it will still be atmospheric. Thought the ending was perfect.
Dan Radcliffe is ...well.. jury is still out, he seems to be a pretty good actor, but his facial expression is limited, and this role doesn't ask him to expand upon it so it's hard to tell.
Did keep thinking of spells he could cast to get out of tricky situations though :p
Anyway, a good way to spend an hour and half, if your idea of horror is less gore and more psychological, this is a Hammer movie, so suspend your disbelief and go and get frightened :D

In brief before I forget them all I ended up watching 4 films on the flight to San Fran.
Drive - I really quite enjoyed this, I wasn't sure what to expect given some of the comments in here but while it doesn't make a lot of sense in some ways it's quite an entertaining and stylish film.
The Hangover Part II - much the same as before so in that sense it's perfectly as expected, I found Zach Galifianakis' character to be even more annoying than last time. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again but I'm happy enough to have seen it so I've watched both.
Moneyball - a surprisingly good film, I'd heard a little bit about it as a film of the story where the general manager of the Oakland Athletics tried to revolutionise baseball and use statistics to select the best baseball players for a team rather than individual superstars. I'm not a huge fan of baseball, it's just not a sport that has ever held any particular appeal to me but you don't need to like baseball to appreciate the film. It's funny how some of the best sports films are about American sports which wouldn't seem all that promising initially.
Killer Elite - it's a Jason Statham film, there's not a huge amount else to say. If you like his films generally then you'll probably like this as well, if not then avoid it as it's along the same lines as all the rest.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - 2011
I was rather nervous about this adaptation as I really enjoyed the book and the Swedish film from a couple of years back. I must say that I really enjoyed this version, Daniel Craig does a good job as do the rest of the cast, the changes to the plot are minor and don't detract from the overall plot and the story moves along at a good pace.
The rape scene is rather uncomfortable to watch (Miss DL left the room) but then it's not supposed to be nice, you may want to fast forward through it.

Hugo: 8.5/10
Really enjoyed this. Very good atmosphere, similar in some ways to Amelie, not least that it's French. Could have had a bit more Jude Law in it for a .5 increase ;) Ben Kingsley is a fabulous actor, and his eyes are so expressive. I wasn't sure about this film for the first hour or so having heard massively good things about it, but based on the latter half, I upped my mark from hovering around a 6 to an 8.5.
Didn't really like the Sasha Baron Cohen character though, seemed out of place. When I saw Johnny Depp was one of the producers, I realised where that came from.
The Hunger Games 10/10
One of the best films I've seen for a long time. Loved the styling, the concept, the way the film was split into before/during and thought it was perfectly done. Not particularly 'teenage' as you might expect, certainly a lot more grown up than the Twilight movies which I think are aimed at the same age group. Loved the way they showed the production of the event being done, reminded me of a kinda MASSIVE version of big brother. Excellent acting and characters, and at 2.25, I didn't even check my watch once to see what time it was (how I measure how engrossing a film is :p)

Snap!
Same here really, the film could do with another 30 mins to flesh out the marines role as well as some background on the agency / other characters. The format was very much "here is a marine", "here is a CO", here is the situation ..... off you go!
Interesting concept which I am sure I have seen something very similar to recently. At 90mins it was too short. Given another 30 mins to flesh the situation and story out I think it would have been great.
Hmmm 6/10. Predictable, but the lack of development of characters really holds the film back. With the short running time you are never quite given time to get into the film.
The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec
I'm not quite sure how to describe the feel of this film...... a french sort of cross between 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' and 'The Mummy' with a bit of steam punk and ripping yarns thrown in. It seems very marmite from all the reviews I have seen, but I really liked it. If there is ever a sequel I'll be watching it for sure.

13 Assassins

Takashi Miike film
8/10 I watched this with a couple of friends and they both enjoyed it despite neither being much of a fan of Takashi Miike or films set in feudal Japan - that said there were a few questions about what was going on. It's violent and flashy as with all his films but there's also moments of levity and even occasional subtlety. I hadn't heard much about it before watching but it's definitely worth the time if you've got even a passing interest in either of the things in the first sentence.
The Way Of The Gun
Starring Ryan Phillippe Benicio Del Toro Juliette Lewis Taye Diggs
Action thriller
7/10 Rather violent film with some pretty good acting about a couple of petty criminals who bite off rather more than they can chew by abducting the surrogate mother for a rather more serious criminal. If you dislike Sarah Silverman as much as I do then you may also enjoy it but then you could switch off after five minutes.
Warrior
Starring Joel Edgerton Tom Hardy Nick Nolte Jennifer Morrison
Sports drama
8/10 For the most part very entertaining story of two brothers who are estranged from each other and their alcoholic father but their worlds end up coming together again when they fight for an MMA tournament with the biggest purse in the history of the sport. It's well told but at the end it just feels like the writer got bored as the ending leaves so much left unexplained, there's almost no tie-up which isn't always a bad thing but here it felt less like a plot device than laziness.
Fast & Furious 5
Starring Vin Diesel Paul Walker Jordana Brewster Dwayne Johnson
Car film
6/10 If you've liked the rest then you'll probably like this one, impressively enough they've managed to shoehorn in most of the cast from the previous four pictures. It's good fun and silly except where it tries to be a bit serious which doesn't work so well, I enjoyed it but then again I quite liked the others too.

I found this a really good watch. It's not action packed and fast paced but much more of a slow and thoughtful type of film, yet it's not too deep. There's some solid acting and whilst the plot was a little predictable, there were enough little twists to catch you and it was nice to watch something a little different.

Raging Phoenix
Thai martial arts film.
A violent gang is abducting and killing women around Thailand. Sanim and his friends have all lost family members or wives and have joined together to break the gang of kidnappers. Deu/Dew (played by JeeJa Yanin, the name is inconsistent in the subtitles) was the target of a kidnapping attempt but is saved by Sanim's crew and decides to join them, learning their drunken style of fighting so she can exact her revenge.
Reasonable film. Once again demonstrates that extraordinary dedication to their art by Thai fighters. Much like you see in films like Ong Bak, the stuntmen and actors are taking some very real blows.
Reasonable plot, it's not really going to present any major surprises. Reasonable way to pass a few hours.

ReAlly miffed I watched this (well an hour 20 of it as I decided to give up and go to sleep... Sam persevered though). It had the makinngs of a good film, some lovely set designs and costumes but BY GOd what a horrendously poorly organised film. A suburban family is torn apart when fourteen-year-old Annie (Liana Liberato) meets her first boyfriend online. After months of communicating via online chat and phone, Annie discovers her friend (Chris Henry Coffey) is not who he originally claimed to be. Shocked into disbelief, her parents (Clive Owen and Catherine Keener) are shattered by their daughter's actions and struggle to support her as she comes to terms with what has happened to her once innocent life.
Loved it. LOVED IT. Clive Owen (and the rest of the cast, to be fair) was SUPERB.
Going to suggest this in the 25 films bit. Which needs updating.

Phil sold it to me by saying 'it's about a guy that can do stuff'
Well, it is, but I like the story and idea. It's well filmed and well acted. A few times I said 'why doesn't he just do ......' but then thhe is either an explanation or a reason, so it ties up a lot of questions. The end is open though and I'm not sure you are meant to believe what he is saying... 7/10

A random one that came through Tesco dvd rental. There are parts that are funny with his mate, but to put this in the comedy bracket is not right. It is about one bloke who gets diagnosed with cancer and focusing around his fight and the effects that it has on others around him. There were some aspects that were skimmed that are really haunting. Personally I recognised a lot of stuff that rang bells.
Good film, not what I was expecting at all.

Like a) Secure a source of the drug (would have been one of my first steps after the initial WOW stuff), b) focus on improving it from the get go to avoid the side effects and make it more permanent. Even from early on he had the resources to do so, and better yet the intellect. Saw this at Cineworld and they had a false fire alarm part way through the film (so slow to evacuate we were still queuing!? to get out one fire exit when they realised it was "safe" that's another issue though) just after said scene. They apparently did us a favour by rewinding to just before the said scene, so we wouldn't have missed anything. Honestly never heard such a loud simultaneous groan in a cinema when everyone realised what they'd done. Morons operating didn't once engage their brain obviously.
Even after their monumental failure (how much a ticket cineworld!?) it was still an amazing film to watch, which I guess goes to show how good it really is....

Garp, Can't answer that really because its subjective and as I haven't seen in 2D as well I can't compare.
However, for £2, unless you dislike 3D, I can't see why it wouldn't be worth it to watch it on the big screen in a way you won't be able to see once it's off the cinema. For films like that, I'd never not watch in 3D if it's available.

John Carter
You know the infinite monkey theorem that states a monkey hitting keys at random on a keyboard for an infinite amount of time will write Shakespeare. Well I think they hired that monkey to write John Carter but kept him supplied with booze, weed and shrooms whilst he was writing as only that could explain the sheer disjointed randomness of this film and that's before I start on the gaping plot holes that can't be described as Swiss cheese as never before has a Swiss cheese been made big enough to encompass the holes required to make this a valid metaphor.
This is a real shame as they must have spent an absolute fortune on the special effects, I know that we've now entered an age where we expect computer generated characters to seamlessly integrate into films but it is really impressive in this film just how seamless the integration is and just how much they are used. It's almost worth watching the film for this alone but not quite which is a real shame.

Went and saw a preview last night for the
Snow White and the Huntsman
I really enjoyed it, I have to say before I went I didn't think it would be my thing and I thought it would be pretty boring, however even though it turned out to be over 2 hours long it flew by and I enjoyed it alot. There were parts where it was quite funny, as well as very sad at others, but it had some interesting twists which I can't remember from the fairytale. My brother however hated it, he said it was predictable and rubbish ( he is only 16, suprised I got that much out of him, normally it is just a grunt lol!) but I don't see how it could have been made without being predictable at some point afterall it is based on the fairytale.
Avengers.
My kind of movie. Didn't like SJ in it, but everyone else was perfect.

The Dictator
Rather toned down compared to Borat and the format came with a whiff of desperation before it dies completely. Still it had lots of inappropriate jokes and yes I laughed at all of them. Fairly short running time but I think that was due to running out of ideas.
Would I watch it again? Yes as a laugh with beers and some mates, on my own probably not.
6/10 Came across as a tired film but still had plenty of good gags.
MIB... it was pants!
Just what the Doctor ordered!
I say that... and genuinely it wasn't too great. It's not a patch on the first which always makes me chortle muchos :)

I know little about the original books as I've never read them. I only know about them vicariously because Michael Moorcock is a fan of them and he wrote some similar stories.
However, I read a review by MM of this film and he seemed to really enjoy it. A lot of fans of the original books seemed to enjoy it too, although they all did all say that the film was too close to the "concept" of the books to be commercial... Maybe it's one of those "by fans for true fans only" things...

10/10 for me, and easily the best film, of any kind, I've seen since The Dark Knight. I can completely understand why it's smashed virtually every box office record out there (though I think Dark Knight Rises will beat all the new records). So enjoyable I would happily pay to go the cinema again next week to watch it. Genuinely funny at times, especially The Hulk, who made me cover my own mouth to stop myself from laughing too much on more than one occasion. Brilliant!

Prometheus
I think that your attitude towards this film will depend on your attitude towards SciFi. If you love the original Alien(s) films and think this should be a seamless match then sorry but you are in for a disappointment. If like me you were looking forward to Ridley Scott revisiting SciFi then I think that you are in for a treat. I'm not going to bother discussing the story as frankly if you want to know, you already will so instead onto the cinematography which is very pretty (in 2D) and the soundtrack which was well suited.
So on the cast, Noomi Rapace played a very Ripleyesque character very well, Michael Fassbender is brilliant though does suffer from the classic cinema problem of being more advanced that the character that came before him in 1979 (think the Star Trek reboot) and Idris Elba just make me man crush horny as usual. The rest of the cast did a good job though personally I felt that Charlize Theron could have done better with what was frankly a rather superfluous role.
As I said at the start your enjoyment of this film will really depend on your attitude, for me it was an 8/10 and one of the better films I've seen in quite a while. For others I could certainly understand a 6/10
I think I'm going to really be disappointed by Prometheus. :(
I recently watched Aliens again (and introduced Chrispy Coates to it too!) and just have waaay too much love for it. Being a prequel I thought it would carry much of the same thread and ambiance as the first two at least. I, however, have the feeling that Prometheus is leaning towards more of a Hollywood blockbuster style film.
I have sworn if Charlize Theron is not an android I will be super pissed off. Don't get me wrong, she's a great actress, but she's too Hollywood and pretty looking for what I was hoping to get out of this film. I think my hope of grimey hard core muddy funsters and the awesomeness that is Vasquez and Ripley is going to be nuked.
/prepares to be ranty upon seeing the film!
(on the good side of the world though, the new aliens computer game to be released looks pretty hard as nails so that will cheer me up :))
Prometheus: 6/10 (Thanks, Del ;)
I found it utterly predictable, some very groany "oh no, they didn't do that" moments & I thought the characters were completely unengaging, both with other characters and the audience. I felt they staggered through some plot-points & raced through others. Charlize Theron, who I do consider to be a great actress from what I've seen (Monster, in particular) was completely flat. I know she's meant to be a no-nonsense character, but just flat and cold didn't do it for me. I thought that without the ALIEN reference, it would have been a bog-standard sci-fi film. Nothing great about it but not dreadful. Idris Elba was the best thing about it. It was alright. In 3D/iMax probably the effects would be pretty good and might have raised it to a 7. Oh and as Dr Z said on FB - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, RUN SIDEWARDS!
Dark Shadows: 3/10
Horribly disappointing. Love a bit of Depp & Burton, but I think the partnership has overrun its course now. This character was a mish-mash of Jack Sparrow & Edward Scissorhands. Eva Green proves yet again she is just a body with a moveable eyebrow (rare in Hollywood, admittedly) because she really can't act her way out of a paper bag.
Not sure if it wanted to be a black comedy, a Stardust type film or a cheesy kiddie style horror, it fell flat on all counts.

I'd agree with Kittens review. I was a bit disappointed by it. Don't feel like I was robbed of 2 hours of my life, but at the same time, it was lacking something. The trailer made it seem better than it was. I expected to be scared stiff, I wasn't.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Went into this expecting it to be a complete turkey based on other people's reactions to it, but to be fair it was no better or worse than the previous ones so I got a little more out of it than I was hoping.
I can't help but think the entire franchise would have been better if the Transformers didn't move at the speed of sound, so you could actually watch the action without it having to be close-up, dropping into slow motion every five seconds and sometimes just plain baffling as to what's going on on-screen. Half of what makes the films so watchable is the detail that's gone into the transformations, but you never get to really see it!
I also found Rosie Huntington-Whiteley perfectly acceptable as the new female lead. I think she got a bad rap for basically not being an actor when picked for it, but let's face it, this isn't Hamlet. She did fine. My only gripe is that she's so perfectly perfect to look at, being poured into countless variations of 'little white dress', that it's wholly distracting whenever she's on the screen. Luckily, missing whatever they're talking about at the time doesn't detract from the plot.
5/10 mainly because I still can't get my head around how they filmed so many of the scenes with the actors in, even with the help of CGI. Oh, and Ken Jeong can elevate any movie by at least a point!

Shocking!
Iron Sky
Partly internet fan-funded B-movie tale of Nazi's living on the moon since the end of WWII. Considering the low budget and crazy storyline, the Finnish boys done good. I especially loved the Einstein-esque crazy scientist who invented USB as a means of powering the "Gotterdammerung" flying saucer to return to Earth and start the Fourth Reich.

Drive
I instantly get doubts about it because it has Ryan Gosling in it, which has been the entire basis of a few very weird films that my gf has suggested for us.
This was no exception.
He plays a socially awkward silent type who aside from his "main jobs" as a mechanic and hollywood stuntman, used to moonlight as a genius getaway driver.
He strikes up a friendship with the equally socially awkward silent neighbour (Carey Mulligan) and her hispanic looking son. Her jailbird husband who is released soon into the film, has "prison protection" debts to be paid to a local mob head(the Russian dude from Police Academy Mission to Moscow)and after a beating from some heavies in front of his son, Gosling's character offers to help him out by driving him away from a pawn shop robbery. As usual, things go wrong, someone dies and then it gets frickin savage.
Quirky Tron like soundtrack, long bouts of awkward silence and glances, unexpected ridicuous violent acts. Not really worth it unless you really really love the Tron soundtrack!
5/10. Generously. And I love Tron!

The Dark Knight Rises
Alright. Just about wrapped things up I guess. A few things irked me about the whole thing and I'm not sure I can even pinpoint what they all were.
I'm convinced that Catwoman didn't need to be in this at all though. She appears out of nowhere at the start and is suddenly somehow an integral part of everything whilst not really serving a purpose as far as the story is concerned.
There are things in the film that are there then gone again such as Bruce's new super-kick, and Catwoman's little mate. Morgan Freeman just turned up to collect his paycheck. 'The Bat' felt oddly contrived; convenient. Near the end I was sidetracked by little things like why doesn't Batman fall through the ice? Why did he waste time putting a burning bat on the bridge? Why wasn't Gary Oldman even bruised rolling around in the back of a van with an atomic bomb, in a crash that killed the driver?
I like that the stories are intertwined from the beginning of the trilogy and that we got an ending to it all, but TDK felt flawless whereas this feels... cobbled together.

Maybe it was. Heath Ledger topping himself put an end to any follow on from the previous film.
having said that, I agree on all your points.
I really liked DKR. Probably my favourite of the three, but that will change as I rewatch the others. Completely different style and tone to DK so find it hard to compare although nice to see Batman didn't have the most ridiculous voice in the film this time around.
Someone obviously told me to rent this one as it is completely off my normal watching radar.
The Deep Blue Sea
Based on a 1950s play starring Rachel Weiz. It is about a wife trapped in a loveless marriage set and she then meets an old RAF pilot. Sorry to say it is a story around self destruction and the path that leads there. A fantastic use of classical music by the director and each piece is carefully chosen. I won't give too much more away but it is a cracking story.
Hit a chord as it is something I have seen too many times (and I'm only 29!) happen to too many people. The messages meant for the older viewers I got as I have seen it with my family.
You know what, I would give it an 8/10. Certainly way off my normal kind of watch and I won't see it again. However credit where it is due, a damn good film and a nice change. Give it a go :)
I've recently acquired a bit of a zombie fixation, even going so far as to start a blog with my thoughts. I'm attempting to watch or rewatch every zombie film ever made and yeah I know it's probably a mid-life crisis but it's got to be better than getting a motorbike or having an affair...
Last night I watched Dead Snow, a norwegian nazi zombie flick set in the icy tundra. It was absurd, a bit confused in that it seemed to want to be a serious cliche horror flick as well as a Bruce Campbell parody slaughter-fest, and it was very very gory with unmemorable acting. Despite all this is I quite enjoyable it in places, and have definately seen worse.

Romero's 1985 Day of the Dead - another great solid zombie film, a bit darker and doesn't quite reach the giddy heights of Dawn but good nonetheless, 7/10.

Snow White and the Huntsman Meh. Alright, watchable, nothing special but nothing too offensive. Did find the divvy bird in it from Twilight was fairly annoying from time to time. Loving the Dark Forest scene though... trippy! 6/10
Ponyo Japanese animation... loved it! Superb animation, kicks Little Mermaid up the bum! Super mental nutty awesomeness! Definitely top of my list for animations! 9/10

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
I liked the storyline to this explaining how the apes became intelligent, it had some decent potential but it just never really hit the spot for me. It was just kind of OK throughout the whole film but never anything exceptional.

Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Shia Labeouf, Guy Pearce
Apparently based on a true story, the original novel written by the grandson of one of the Bondurant brothers. Whatever, it's still a fine piece of story telling. I thought it was well shot, well directed and nicely acted. A few amusing moments break up the tension and there's the seemingly obligatory love interests thrown in to keep the romantics happy. It's quite graphic at times, so much so that my wife almost walked out as she felt so sick. I loved it.
It wasn't perfect and as a supposed true story it felt a little too far fetched at times, but it was still one of the most enjoyable films I've seen for a while.

Cidade de Deus (City Of God)
Starring Alexandre Rodrigues Leandro Fermino Phellipe Haagensen Douglas Silva
Crime drama
8/10 A really good film based on a true story about the different paths of two boys growing up in a Brazilian slum in the 1960s. Brutal, clever and yet at the same time strangely hopeful. I last watched it a good few years ago and it's just as good now as it was then.
Killer Elite
****e name, decent film. Was most impressed with the prolonged fight scenes, especially as I never had Clive Owen down as a full-on fisticuffs action guy. Jason Statham actually gets to play a role that isn't tongue-in-cheek for once and Robert DeNiro plays a smaller but significant role.
Based on The Feather Men by Ranulph Fiennes, it tells the true (or is it?) story of a sheikh trying to get revenge on the SAS men who killed his sons in a secret British insurgency in the late 70s (film set circa 1980).
Smarter than I was expecting, though the action is too perfect for it to feel true to life enough to be entirely believable. Overall though a lot better than I was expecting.
7/10
Bronson
Biopic of "Britains most dangerous prisoner", Michael Peterson was sentenced to 7 years for armed robbery. Since then he's spent over 35 years in prison, 30 of those in solitary and only 69 days free. Starring a very bulked up Tom Hardy and a great moustache.
It's missed out a lot of what has actually happened to Bronson, glossed over some bits and made other bits up. I don't know if they were trying to "artify" the story, but all the monologues with Charlie dressed in clown makeup confused the hell out of me.
Ultimately dissapointing.

I watched this too (Sky Movies ftw) and didn't feel the same sense of disappointment you did and thought it held up well too the end. I'd give it 7 or 8 and I can't wait for the sequel.
I've also watched quite a few more films since my last post (you'll see a theme here.)
White Zombie (http://watchingthedead.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/white-zombie-review.html) Regarded as the original zombie film from 1932 starring Bela Lugosi. It's definitely feels like a film from the 1930 but actually holds up well with a good story and hammy acting. 7/10
Fido (http://watchingthedead.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/fido-review.html) A satirical box office failure starring Billy Connolly as a pet zombie. Pretty hilarious and reminded a bit of Edward Scissor Hands. 7/10
Zombie Women of Satan (http://watchingthedead.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/zombie-women-of-satan-review.html) A British northern b-movie of a burlesque group including Pervo the Clown battling a lot of topless zombies. If you get it it's quite hilarious, if you don't you'll think it's awful. 8/10
City of the Living Dead (http://watchingthedead.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/city-of-living-dead-review.html) A cult 1980s horror/zombie film from Italian director Lucio Fulci. It's disturbing and very gory but oozing atmosphere. it's all a bit surreal too. 8/10
I also watched, the new Dawn of the Dead, a good modern zombie story but not a patch on the original, 7.5/10. Return of the Living Dead, the hilarious 80s zombie comedy, brilliant, 9/10. Zombie Virus on Mulberry Street, a bit odd as they're not zombies but infected rat people, still it was done by the guy who did Stakeland and you can see his genius even if the film's a low budget and a bit average, 6/10. Land of the Dead, Romero's 4th zombie film. I bloody loved this and would recommend it to anyone who likes post apocalyptic sci-fi. Finally I looked at Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. I watched this with my girls and I can honestly say it's not only the best Scooby Doo film I've seen but a great film in its own right, 9/10!
John Carter
Well I haven't read the books but the Martians looked a lot like the guys from Unreal 1. Fairly predictable story line but nice effects. A nice film for the kids but I won't bother with it again.
6/10
Underworld - Awakening (2D)
I'm never getting that time back in my life you know! Jeez talk about yet another film cashing in on the 'Yey 3d' bandwagon. Plot..... what plot? What actually happened during this film? Stuff blew up and there was a lab, then that blew up, then there was a guy.... and he blew up. Complete with crazy amounts of lame cgi.
Worse than the other two. And no, beckinsale in leather didn't look as good this time around.

Final Destination 5.
Teens escape death, but the reaper wants them back crap-fest.
Taking it seriously 2/10
Treating it as a comedy 7/10
Oh I assume it was in 3D at the cinema as the starting credits consists mainly of things flying towards the camera.
The Machinist
Taken me ages to finally see this, and all I really knew about it was the whole 'Christian Bale shed 65lb for the role' thing which made the movie sound gimmicky. Thankfully it's brilliant and the weight thing cogent to the plot, not just 'this guy needs to look sickly'. Was expecting a drama, but got more of a psychological thriller. Quite Hitchcockian, with a wonderfully sleepy/manic performance from Bale.
9/10
Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief
Pretty good teenage fantasy romp thing. Good cast & work a watch just to see a MASSIVE Sean Bean at the end.
7/10
The Hunger games
Hmmm, definitely borrowed quite a few ideas from Battle Royale and the Running Man. A good concept but a hell of a lot was skipped or not explained. I get the feeling that the story is actually going to be in the books. Nicely timed cutaways from all gore/blood to get a nice low rating for maximum audience coverage.
In all, something to watch but another one not to bother watching again. I do get the distinct impression that you need to read the books.
5.5 I've seen worse.
Argo
2 words: Bloody Brilliant.
My film of this year.
10/10
The Thing (2011)
Billed as a prequel but virtually (embarrassingly) identical to the superior original. Infuriating as the lead keeps a cool head whilst all around her are being dicks, annoying as the ending sets up the original film despite feeling like it's set in present day.
3/10
Final Destination 5
I have big problems with this franchise in that each movie is identical with no progression in the mythology. They could be so much more. This one is no exception but it does tie in a little with the original at least. It's all about the theatrical deaths and if that's what you're after you'll not be disappointed.

A land baron tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.
Kari was very reluctant to watch this because there was such a fuss about how it's a local film and local films usually end up being stereotypical over the top crap (e.g. "50 first dates"). I was kinda meh about the prospect but I put it in the Netflix queue after Dym asked me a few questions on MSN about it.
Both of us ended up really enjoying it. It's outside of our usual preference in films, neither of us tends to go in for the major dramas. It's so completely "Hawaii" it couldn't have captured it better if it tried. It really shows that the book's author was born and raised locally, and the screenwriters have done a good job of not making it too Hollywood. There were no awful attempts to use pidgin or Hawaiian, just straight language, local style :) The family name, King, and their land heritage seems a very deliberate nod to the Castle family, who partnered with the Cooke family to become one of the "big five" companies that ended up owning almost all of the land here.
From some of the questions Dym had: Yes people really do business looking like that, Hawaiian shirts + slacks is considered smart. You generally won't see major business done wearing shorts but it happens. Yes locals do wear "slippahs" (flip flops) pretty much all the time. Business is the general exception to the rule but even that's not hard and fast.
The story is well presented, eventually compelling (it took me a little while to particularly care about them) with enough angles to keep things fresh. Shailene Woodley does a particularly good job as George Clooney's eldest daughter.
Paranorman 7/10
As some of you will know, my friend's brother wrote and directed this movie. He's previously worked as Head of Storyboard on Coraline & the Corpse Bride along with a few other things - this is his first foray into his own movies and I've watched the progress of this movie from when he was pitching it to uninterested agencies to seeing it on the big screen, so very exciting!
I enjoyed this but I found it a bit hard to get into the characters. The story was typical Burton/ilk fare and there were some bits at the end that were very scary, considering it's a kids film. Overall, I liked it and I would think most kids would too. Burton still edges it for me, but for a debut, it's pretty damn good.
Frankenweenie : 9/10
Given I love Tim Burton anyway, this was always going to be a winner. Lots of little nods to different types of horror movie, a cute 'cast' and a good story. Enjoyed this muchly.
Twiglet: Breaking Dawn 7/10
Probably one of the best of the franchise. The first 2 were ok, the 3rd and 4th were just filler, but this one was pretty good if you can ignore the annoying teenage sulkiness and the lack of reaction from Ms Stewart. Not a bad teenage film but if sparkly vampires aint your thing, stay away ;)
Looper 6/10
Was looking forward to this a LOT but the fact that the lead guy in it (Gordon-Levitt?!) was made up to supposedly look like he could be a younger Bruce Willis and actually looked like he was wearing a Victorian death mask including full red lips and scouse brows which I could NOT drag my eyes away from, really detracted from the story. Also, the fact that there is an utterly mahoosive hole in the whole concept, which totally contradicts something that happens earlier on in the film, really pee'd me off.
Skyfall 9/10
Not sure why so many people slated this. Great film. Really enjoyed it, some clever nods to the retro stuff - and a good theme (is older better?) I know people complained about the baddie being a bit caricaturish, but c'mon, can they win? They get slated by some faction of Bond 'fan' whatever they do, and I thought it was a great action packed film. Love Craig as Bond.

Love Craig as Bond.
You could have that sentence without that last two words and it would still read true wouldn't it...? :p
I'l try and remember to put up the last few films I watched tomorrow, there's some decent ones in there including Angels Share.
Actually, it's only really as Bond! But yeah. *goes for a lie down*

7/10 A great little story about a lad from Glasgow who narrowly escapes prison and tries to turn his life around as he's recently become a father but there's further trials and tribulations on the way. It's not perfect by any stretch but it's entertaining and you can feel a connection to the characters building which is all the more impressive when you realise that most of the young cast have very little formal acting experience.
I've also recently watched Goon, The Losers and Snakes On A Plane but none of them really merit much comment. They're entertaining enough in their own way but nothing more than a few hours of fluff in total.
Last night I stayed up 'til 4am just reading all my old movie reviews in here. Got to this page (http://www.boat-drinks.co.uk/showthread.php?p=323649) and suddenly laughed out loud for longer than I have in a long time.
Scroll to post 1227, read the review (I need to see that film again), then Desmo's response, then my response. The Isaac Hayes bit made me laugh like a drain.
Probably bad form to laugh at your own jokes but it threw me off guard. Totally forgot I'd written it.

I laughed, I also realised that I'd written a review of Hard Luck and that I've got no recollection of ever having watched it or even tried to.
End of Watch 8/10
Docu-style film following two LAPD police officers through their days. One handheld, a few clip on cameras & a car cam provide pretty much all of the coverage except what they can't see. Violent in places, very funny in others. A touching movie, full of the nuances of daily life for these guys alongside a developing problem which threatens to become life-threatening. Quite different to anything else around at the moment. Gritty buddy cop movie with excellent performances from the lead actors which makes it believable. This aint a feel good Lethal Weapon type of film though so don't be expecting one!
Brave 8/10
Typical Pixar fare. Cute characters & animals and a lesson to be learnt. So realistic in the animation, there are moments when you can forget it's not real!
Hmm...some people forgetting spoiler alerts... :/

Life of Pi 3D - 9/10
Really good. Matt's read the book and said the film wasn't a disappointment. Worth going to see in 3D (imho) because the cinematography is absolutely incredible and the subject lends itself perfectly to this. What you'd expect from Ang Lee, really. Some really sad bits but a couple of surprisingly laugh out loud moments too. Still giggling at 2 of them 3 days later.
Oh, I'm thinking of changing my name to Richard Parker, but only to Indians. I love the way he says his name!

Could you just answer one question. Having seen the trailers it looks like just a dude and a tiger in a boat in the ocean. Is that where the film is set and the only place they show?
Trying to decide if I wanna see it or not
No, it obviously takes up a large chunk of the time on the water but there is a back story and other stuff going on too. I can explain more offline if you want to know a bit more. I was thinking the same tbh but got free tickets. Had I paid, I'd be more than happy :)

I wouldn't be put off a film just because it's set in primarily one location, 12 Angry Men is one of the greatest films ever made and it barely leaves the jury room. However I don't know if that would apply to Life of Pi - I read the book years ago and can't say I've got much desire to watch the film if it bears any strong resemblance to the book, it felt as if the book was trying to be clever for the sake of it and the story wasn't enough to support that level of hubris.
That said I suspect I'm in a minority with my views on the book and so it may prove with the film too. :)
I've heard a lot of people say they disliked the book, especially the ending. I've never got round to it but am reading it now after seeing the film and am as yet undecided as to which I prefer. The book, 20% or so in certainly lacks some of the warmth & humour of the film. Have spoken to several people who have seen film & read book yet preferred the film which is quite unusual.
necroedit: Unusually, definitely preferred the film!
I'm a bit behind everyone on this one.... Despicable Me
The evilness was delicious at times, but it remained family friendly. While watching I kept thinking that if they made Evil Genius into a film, it would be just like this :D Ok, so the plot could be guessed but it was a good laugh throughout.
I would say 8.5/10.
It almost seemed too short, but it was a kids film at heart :)
It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!!
The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Remake of epic 1950's Sci Fi classic "starring" Keanu Reeves.
As far as I can tell, the Earth never stood still. KR was as wooden as ever, but as he was playing an alien in a human body, we can kind of forgive him.
4/10
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
RDJ and Jude Law return as Holmes and Watson. Jared Harris is excellent as Moriarty as is Stephen Fry as Mycroft.

Skyfall.
Simple and uncomplicated plot, Daniel Craig playing Bond just how he's written in the books. Bit of nostalgia.
Fantastic!
Resurrection time.. Kari and Naia have been in Virginia for the last week or so so I've had the time to watch some films.
Chronicle
Unmitigated tosh. Acting is reasonable, special FX good. Plot crap. Coming of age(ish) film with superpowers. Utterly predictable.
Prometheus
Great potential, totally wasted. Wayland Corporation's philosophy seems to be to hire the stupidest scientists imaginable, and give them lots of resources to shoot themselves in the foot with, hoping to make a profit from it somehow.
Beautiful cinematography, reasonable acting.
The rolling stone ball on Indiana Jones worked because there was no where for Indy to run but away from the ball in the same direction it was rolling.
If it's a circular space-ship rolling along a rocky plains and you don't run to the side, you're arguably too stupid to live and deserve to be crushed by it
Looper
Excellent film, interesting idea well executed. Great acting from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Seven Psychopaths
Loved it. Love the characters and the way they come together and their stories slowly intertwine. It's funny with some great lines without being an out and out comedy and the way the script unfolds and you get to that point where it all clicks in to place (hard to explain without spoilers).
8/10
I found Chronicle fairly acceptable. A bit 'teeny' and US-branded for my taste but not unenjoyable.
Saw Margin Call the other day - had no idea what to expect but very entertaining. Jeremy Irons almost sounded like he was parodying himself though!
13 Assassins
Evil Half-Brother of the Shogun who rapes and murders at whim is set to take on a position of authority, which he'll use to completely destabilise Japan after decades of peace.
13 Assassins set out to kill him.
Pretty good film, with some shades of "7 Samurai". Great cinematography. The subtitles were slightly annoying in places. I'm not sure quite what it was, either they're English as a Second Language, or someone trying too hard to get a literal translation. More than a few times I found myself re-phrasing translations into something more natural.
At one point they almost literally lifted a line from "The Charge of the Light Brigade", with one of the Samurai commenting about them "ours is not to wonder why, ours is to obey and die" (compare to "Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die").
Worth a watch, but in places it's quite gory so if you're of a sensitive nature maybe it's not for you.

Prometheus
Great potential, totally wasted.
Totally agree. Assuming the sequel does indeed happen we can only hope it has more substance and, dare I say it, more story.
Moneyball
Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and mostly baseball people from what I understand.
Mostly True story based on the book of the same name. Brad Pitt is the General Manager of the Oakland Athletics team, a team which has only a 'small' budget ($40m), compared to the big teams ($120m+). He's tired of losing guys to the big teams, and starts to question whether they're on the right tracks. Jonah Hill's character, an economics major from Yale, starts talking about a whole new model that threatens to shake up everything everyone knows about running and playing a team.
Pretty good drama, you don't have to be interested in baseball much to watch it (I sure as heck am not). Bradd does a great job, really seems to get his teeth into the role. Jonah does well I guess, but the character doesn't really go anywhere.
Lockout (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1592525/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)
In the near future, they have a giant prison in orbit. The prisoners are stored in some form of suspended animation. I have no idea how that makes any sense.
US Presidents daughter (played by Maggie Grace who you might recognise as the daughter from Taken, only this time not so annoying) get's sent up to do some psychoanalysis of the inmates to establish whether or not the US want's to use the facility. Surprise plot twist, she get's taken hostage and only one man can save her (played by Guy Pearce), a man who is in prison having been framed for murder.
Apart from the plot making very little sense, it's okay as an action film. The only problem is the anti-hero protagonist. He has almost no redeeming features. He's a misogynistic, almost unrelentingly selfish bastard. He just happens to be good at being a one man army.
6/10. I don't regret watching it per se.. I just didn't see much to particularly say "You should watch this!!!!!"
Long flight = uber amounts of films! :D albeit cut to shreds.
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2
Final part of the saga, so more of the same. If you have read the books you know what's coming. If you haven't, you probably won't be watching it anyway :p
8/10 - because I liked the series!
The Invasion
New take on 'The Invasion of the Body Snatchers' was quite eerie (I am scared easily). An Alien spaceship crashes and manages to get into the bloodstream of a guy who starts to infect everyone else... turning them into emotionless zombies. Only activated when you hit REM sleep. Story is about a Dr (Nicole Kidman) and her fight to stay 'normal' and find a cure.
7/10 - Good film probably won't watch it again
12 Rounds
A guy who looks like 'The Thing' from Fantastic Four (he's a WWE wrestler or something) has his girlfriend kidnapped from an old crim he banged up. Crim gives him 12 challenges to fulfill in order to get her back.
Crim is the rich gay one from Queer as Folk - he's done well for himself!
Was ok, reminded me of Speed. Main character was definitely a cross between The Thing and Christian from Eastenders.
6/10 - was ok to watch won't bother again.
A Cinderella Story
Not sure why I watched this one :/ seriously... think I was getting a bit deluded at this point. It's the modern day version of the Cinderella story. American High school light hearted.. blah blah.. no one that famous in it.... apart from Stifler's mum.
3/10 - for Stifler's mum. Should have watched Silver Lining's Playbook.
Return journey was somewhat better:
Lockout
Jarp has discussed the plot above. I enjoyed the comments on imdb (always look at the trivia/forums after a film). The President's daughter is a human rights activist type but she knows how to shoot a gun? Also she is capable of running around a space station having had a bullet through her leg. There are more goofs than this, but it was a good no brainer action film to watch.
Guy Pearce has come a long way from Neighbours and I actually found his character quite funny.
7/10 - for 'I guess that's why they call it the punch line'.
Jack Reacher
I don't like Tom Cruise much. Have read a few of the Lee Child books so when I saw the trailers and saw that he was playing Jack Reacher I wasn't convinced. He was ok. Hugh Jackman would have been better in my opinion. Good film and enjoyed it.
5 random people are shot in America. The police arrest a suspect who tells them to Get Jack Reacher. Why? The film tells you why.
8/10 - because the storyline was good and I like the books :)
Hitchcock
The story about the making of Psycho and its effect on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma.
I studied a lot of Hitchcock at uni so it was actually a good film for me to watch :) Hopkins is great as Hitchcock, as is Helen Mirren as his wife. Scarlett Johanson and Jessica Biel are also in there.
7/10 - good but wouldn't watch again.
Crazy Stupid Love
Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore are living the American Dream but then she announces she wants a divorce. Ryan Gosling is the hot shot Christian Grey (sans chains and whips) type who gets all the ladies and helps Carrell to reinvent himself to help him win back his wife.
Was quite a good RomCom :) I enjoyed it.

A Good Day To Die Hard
Oh dear god. Really quite awful I'm afraid. The main problem is that it just isn't a Die Hard film, but rather a (distinctly average) action film which happens to star Bruce Willis.
The fourth film had its failings and critics but still qualified as a Die Hard film for me. IMO, what makes a DH film is the villain. In each of the first four films, the focus was on a single villain throughout the film, and the plot developed into pretty much a one-on-one "grudge match" between McClane and the villain. After Alan Rickman, William Sadler, Jeremy Irons & Timothy Olyphant, this film has none of that and thus totally fails to keep your interest. It all just rushes by and is over fairly quickly (it's not a long film). If I'd seen this at the cinema I'd have felt like I'd wasted my money.
2/10
Pacific Rim
Liked this quite a lot I must say. Of course there's no involved plot or much thinking required but then that's not what this kind of film is about. It's a big summer blockbuster in the mold of Transformers and, as such, it succeeds pretty well.
Only real down-side was that it's sometimes hard to keep track of what's happening in some of the big set pieces, there's so much going on, but that doesn't really detract from the film. I'd imagine it might be worse in 3D but I couldn't tell you as I detest 3D and saw it in 2D instead.
Oh, and Rinko Kikutchi is seriously cute! :D I'm not normally attracted to oriental women but she's hawt!!
