Garp I love your reviews, I know they aren't meant to be funny, but that one made me chuckle :D
That was kinda the intention with that one. I'm sure Lana will appear at some stage and talk about how wonderful it was ;D
Little Miss Sunshine
I'd heard so many good things about this film that I was expecting to be let down, but it was everything everyone said it was. The performances are, without exception, superb. Each character has an untold story that I wanted to know more about after the film had ended... and what an ending! I think I may have had my hands over my face for the finalé.
I didn't know what I wanted to watch when I sat down last night, but it turns out it was this. Those of you doing the IMDb top 250 challenge thing are in for a little treat.

One of my new favourites. :)
PS I Love You
Absolutely ridden with the kind of clichés that women love... but done quite well! Gerard Butler pops his little Irish clogs and leaves a series of letters containing tasks to help wife Hilary S**** get over it. It has the bullish mother with a heart of gold (Kathy Bates), the man-hating best friend who's just looking for a rich, handsome husband (Lisa Kudrow), and the socially inept male friend who's in love with the widow and she knows it (Harry Connick Jr.). Some tender moments, some embarrassingly clumsy ones, and a couple of half-surprising twists towards the end.
Beware: Horrible Irish stereotypes/accents lurk within.
6/10.
Edit: Ahahahahaha! Poor Hilary. :D

In P.S. I Love you, why they got a Scot to be Irish I don't know :/. I like Hilary S**** but she was totally miscast as the main in a Romantic Comedy. Brilliant in drama's, but not a Romantic lead. She's the total opposite of Meg Ryan for example. The plus point for me though was Harry Connick Jr. who I thought was superb.
On the topic of Little Miss Sunshine, it was brilliant for about 2/3's of the movie, the first and third parts being good, sadly, it wandered into a bit of boredom around the middle. I am a big fan of Greg Kinnear though, and again, he was brilliant.
I absolutely loved Little Miss Sunshine :) Wasn't disappointed one bit despite concerns after it being hyped so much.

P.S. I love you would be fantastic, if you hadnt read the book like me, and then seen the film, cos then I didnt like the film so much.
It Could Happen To You
Highly implausible film, but still a lot of fun.
Nicholas Cage is a New York cop, good at his job, liked by the locals. Married to the ever irritating Rosie Perez. On my list of disliked actresses she's high up on it. Her high pitched whiny voice gets my back up faster than any one I've ever listened to. However she's perfect for this role, a whiny, selfish, money grabbing, hispanic wife.
Bridget Fonda is a waitress at a local diner, approaching bankrupt, when Nicholas pops in for coffee whilst on shift. Having no tip he agrees to split his lottery ticket with her by way of tip.
Of course he wins. 4 million dollars. He sticks true to his word, wife flips and starts legal proceedings to get the money back, he and waitress spend increasing amounts of time together, falling in love and doing lots of highly implausible but very nice things for locals, such as letting them ride on the subway for free... and the story goes on on fairly predictable lines.
In essence its a fairly straight forward rom-slightly-com. Nothing particularly special about it. It's the first (and possibly only?) time I've seen Nicholas Cage portraying a particularly believable character. Somehow, though, the film seems to touch something in me. I love it.

Total Recall, Robocop, Basic Instinct, Hollow Man...
2 are good - 2 aren't...
Do I have to guess which two? :p
He does appear to be a rather hit and miss director but none of the films I've ever seen of his suggest that subtlety or satire are especially high on his list of abilities which is why I can't quite place whether Starship Troopers is intentionally the way it is, regardless it is a highly enjoyable film and I'm quite prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I'll take both your and Kitten's advice though and avoid the sequels unless I'm completely stuck for something to watch, which is a rather unlikely scenario it must be said. :)

Porco Rosso
One of Studio Ghiblis less well known films it has the unlikely premise of a seaplane pilot being cursed with the aspect of a pig. Beautifully animated and laugh out loud funny in places but the story meanders without any real momentum behind it. 7/10
The Lakehouse
Literally just finished on BBC1. An intriguing film about two people living in the same house and corresponding using a letterbox that sends the letters two years through time. A beautifully filmed flight of fancy that dawdles a little before reaching a slightly unsatisfying conclusion.

Eagle Eye
Jerry (an actually likeable Shia LaBoef) is a wash out, the 'stupid' twin of an undercover CIA operative. His twin brother ends up getting killed right at the start, triggering off a chain of events impacting Jerry.
Rachel (the charming Michelle Monaghan) is a divorced mother of one.
Both end up getting phone calls from a mysterious woman who manipulates them, threatening their lives and and family, forcing them to act according to her will. Not only that but as the film goes on it becomes clear that the caller is manipulating a large number of people. The caller also appears to be able to see everything taking place around the characters. Imagine one of the Operators from The Matrix if you will, and she is able to provide very detailed instructions to both of them, whilst keeping them firmly in the dark.
Spoilers going into what actually is happening:
The scary reality is that the voice is an AI produced by the government to process terrorist data and deal with appropriate targets. She has decided that based on the decisions of the government to bomb targets without highly accurate data, they constitute a terrorist threat and need to be removed from office.
The IMDB rating and reviews didn't lead me to feel it would be much cop, but I find myself rather in disagreement. All parties performed brilliantly, even if the plot could feel a tiny bit implausible at times.
I slowly find myself getting a grudging respect for Shia. Despite the recent over-exposure in films, I'm beginning to feel there is actually potentially great acting talent there. Jerry really didn't feel like previous characters of his, he did a good job with him.
Towards the end I found myself getting quite into the film and hoping for the characters, getting quite scared of the phone lady too.. though ultimately I don't think she was used for as much dramatic effect as she could have. I'd love to have seen her be even more menacing, and ruthless in her determination to achieve her goals.
8/10 - Well worth the watch.

Death Proof
I wasn't expecting much after hearing that its not very good, though I really enjoyed it. Its not to be taken seriously and is very much a parody. Which is possibly why some people dont like it. One thing which really stood out for me was the lack of CGI work for the stunts, everything seemed very real and edgy. As with all Tarintino films there is a high focus on conversations between the charactors, making for some realistic interactions. Overall it was a fun romp slightly let down by the rather weird/brutal ending.

Disaster Movie
It's been a very long while since I saw something quite so terrible. Admittedly I did turn it off half way through so maybe it improved, but I doubt it somehow. I can't remember the last time I gave up on a film, it's been so long, but this really was awful. So very glad I didn't pay money for it and I'll certainly be warning any customers away from it.
1/10
Hellboy II
Long ago a fight between the humans and the monsters took place, the monsters had a giant indestructible clockwork army, and eventually a truce was formed between both sides. The crown that allowed the army to be controlled was broken in three, one part went to the humans, the other two to the monsters. Now one of the Monsters wants the army to rise again...
You can really tell Del Toro was involved in this one. The monsters are superb, unique, colourful and quicky. Not your average sci-fi barely inhuman types. There is something almost Jim Henson-esque about them. He has a wonderful visual sense, and seems to be able to get the best out of the art and design teams he works with on his films.
Plot.. well I'm going to go for "decidedly average". Nothing atrocious, no plot holes that stank to high heaven, but nothing that made me go "WOW, AWESOME!" Perfectly enjoyable though, for sure. Fight sequences were good, but again nothing stunning. Felt rather transparent in their push towards some form of sequel.
Worth a watch, particularly if you've seen the first film, just don't expect something amazing.

I think that Smith put in a great performance, and how anyone could describe it as rubbish is beyond me. For example, I'm not a U2 fan but I can hardly call them rubbish with any real meaning can I?

St. Trinian's
Complete load of gash, and not in the way I was hoping.
Suffers from not really knowing what level to stick with. It's a bit like Carry On for kids but then has strange references that younger kids wouldn't even get. Almost none of the schoolgirl characters are believable as the anarchic troublemakers they're meant to be, and either seem to be seven years old, or twenty-eight.
The plot is barely there, and despite some top names in the mix it's really dragged down by poor writing and unlively dialogue. They clearly got a real boon in bagging Colin Firth for his role, as there are a number of unabashed, hackneyed references about him. His Pride and Prejudice role gets no less than three nods alone, and at one point he is named specifically as an actor outside of his character!
The only people who seem to escape with any kind of dignity are the raver receptionist, the cross-dressing Rupert Everett as the jolly hockey-sticks headmistress, and the effortlessly sexy Gemma Arterton (despite being clearly too old to be there).
Celia Imrie and Lena Headey are completely wasted in their two-dimensional roles, and Russell Brand sticks out like a sore thumb as the wheeler-dealer teacher that supposedly all the girls adore but is actually unintentionally pathetic.
If I was the kind of guy that liked seeing fully grown women dressed as schoolgirls this film might be worthy of a couple of points.

With that out the way it wasn't quite as terrible as I expected, in places I almost laughed but I still feel I'm having to be somewhat generous with the score given that we talked almost the whole way through it - this could be why I don't think it was as terrible as it really should be.

It was Daniel Craig.
And he was working out in the evening after work for James Bond too.
So we'll let him off.

Shoot 'Em Up
Clive Owen gives us an acting masterclass in a cliché-free, realistic piece of cinematography. The script is far from unsettling and not far-fetched at all. It's good to see a film that goes against the glamorisation of guns.
...are all things I wish I could say about this movie.
It's a bit of mindless fun, and it's nice to be set the challenge of suspending disbelief so many times at so high a level.

1 point for Giamatti.
1 point for Monica Belluci's lips.
1 point for using a killer carrot?
I figure that's the reason for the 3 points? :p.

Yeah, it passed 90 minutes. Giamatti is always entertaining but came across as a bit of a lame hitman. Good attitude, not enough results.

Giamatti was pretty appalling in Shoot 'Em Up I thought so I was figuring on 2 points for Monica Bellucci and 1 point for the carrot. It seems I can only suspend disbelief so far in films and believing the neurotic, slightly tubby bloke from Sideways is a cold blooded hitman was a step too far. :p

The thing about Shoot Em up is that it absolutely nails it's target audience but at the expense of everybody else. It's action film pornography - hell, I even felt a bit dirty for enjoying some of it.:o

Mercenaries for Justice
5/10 If you approach it as a brain-off action film.
1/10 If you approach it as a film full stop.
Typical "dozen a year" film from Steven Segal, featuring .. umm.. Steven Segal and Luke Goss. Yes, that dude from Bross.
Plot follows the usual lines, Segal is a good guy, CIA Black Ops, who finds he's being used by bad guy (Luke Goss doing a very good job with poor material), one of his friends get's killed as a consequence so he goes out on a revenge mission to take out all the bad guys.
So far so Segal. Plot line is dodgy, misses few key points along the way expecting things to make sense later on down the line (which they do, but don't make you think "oh right" just "you stupid writers, go back to school")
If you switch your brain off and just enjoy it as another Segal vehicle.. well it's a little lackluster in that regard to. Way too little amounts of action in it.

Are we talking best ensemble casts now? My vote would be for A Bridge Too Far. Off the top of my head: Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Elliot Gould, Edward Fox, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Michael Caine and a few more I've probably forgotten.
Some hooooge names are only on screen for about 5minutes.
Curse of the Golden Flower
Zhang Yimou cements his reputation for being perhaps the best cinematographer working anywhere by layering each perfectly framed scene with so much sumptious colour it borders on being gaudy.
The story deals with a lurid series of intrigues in the Emperors palace that feel more like a greek tragedy than a chinese opera.
Feels a bit overcooked and stodgy compared to the lean and lithe 'Hero' and also lacks the emotional depth. You won't see many films as visually spectacular as this though. 7/10

Southland Tales.
Watched it last night and I'm still unsure if I like it. A bit David Lynch and Coen Brothers like in that nothing really makes sense till the last quarter of the film. Lots of famous people and people who you know but can't place: Curtis Armstrong, Nora Dunn, Janeane Garofalo, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Beth Grant, Dwayne Johnson, Christopher Lambert, John Larroquette, John Lovitz, Mandy Moore, Miranda Richardson, Seann William Scott, Kevin Smith (although I don't remember seeing him), Justin Timberlake (who is quite good) and Eli Roth (allegedly).
Basic premise is, 2 nuclear bombs go off in Texas and America goes to war with pretty much everyone. Individual states erect armed military checkpoints at border cossing and the American military take over cyberspace with a computer called USIDent. Everything that you do and say is tracked and because of this Neo-Marxist groups spring up. It follows the story of Boxer Santaros, a famous actor and son of a presidential candidate (Dwane Johnson) who goes missing 1 day and turns up a couple of weeks later with Amnesia an idea for a new film.
That's all I can say without spoiling it.
Won't give it a score before watching it a second time.

8/10 I don't think this is quite the best View Askew film in terms of dialogue or story but it takes on a big subject matter and delivers with aplomb. One of those films that even if you don't agree with it should at least make you think and that puts it above a great number of films immediately.

Not impressed at all. I wanted a semi mindless but entertaining couple of hours and tbh it was just uninteresting. No great set pieces but also I didn't find the story very compelling either. Seemed a waste of Ed Norton and Tim Roth. Best part was Downey Jr's very brief cameo really :p

I really wasn't expecting much of this. I'd heard that Tom Cruise was very strange but funny, and Robert Downy Jr was good, but other than that nothing.
It is actually a seriously funny film. Superbly done, with great turns by all actors involved.. except Ben Stiller who is just Ben Stiller all over again. Picture him in Mystery Men et al and you've got the same character effectively.
Robert Downy Jr is incredible beyond description as "a dude, playing a dude who is pretending to be a dude." Tom Cruise is down right scary and awesome at the same time.
It's nothing groundbreaking story wise, we've seen it all before. A bunch of prima donna actors playing soldiers for a war movie, who end up unknowingly involved in a real fight, believing it's all being filmed reality TV style.
Well worth the watch for scary Tom Cruise alone :)
Taken (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0936501/)
I watched this last night and really enjoyed it. The film is directed by Luc Beson(Leon & 5th element to name but a few) and stars Liam Neeson and Famke Janssen. The basics of the story are that a guy moves to live near his daughter from his broken marriage. In a show of trust he allows her to go to Paris with her friend. It all turns sour as soon as they get off the plane and end up being kidnapped by some Albanian pimps. Human trafficking and drug dealing are just some of the stand out lines on their CV
Cue Liam Neeson having 96 hours to get from LA to Paris to find his daughter before she is sold to the highest bidder. As an ex spy he uses all his ex contacts to aid his cause and so the story continues to it's natural conclusion.
A good film well acted but it's let down by a poor script. I was pleasantly suprised to see Neeson take on such an active role. Well worth watching for a friday night on rental

I've gotten used to the fact that Tim Burton makes disappointing live action films, but this is a new low. Ropey CGI, lumpy narrative and actually very bad songs from Danny Elfman. The only argument is whether it's actually worse than the Willy Wonka remake.

Steven Segal 1990s action film (pre Under Siege)
Steven Segal is a newly retired undercover DEA agent, after his partner was killed in Columbia.
Goes home to discover Jamaican's spreading drugs "on de streeets, man".
Meets up with a buddy for drinks in a bar and ends up disabling a couple of Jamaican hitmen that were attacking some of the columbian drugs guys in the bar.
He is marked for death, they attack his sister and niece, so he decides to retaliate and hunt down "Screwface"
Let see.. Steven Segal film, so..
Is he highly skilled under cover ops guy? Yup
Laying down arms / retiring / whatever? Yup
Himself, family, or close friends threatened? Yup.
Predictable plot twists? Check.
Gratuitous nudity? Check, several instances.
Every hot chick finding him sexy? Check.
Fight sequences heavily focused on Aikido? Check.
Lots of glass around to either be thrown through or sat hard upon, or otherwise break? Check.
Pretty much your average Segal film. Better in that back in those days he was still fit enough to do a lot more fighting than in his more recent junk. Kari, her father and I were playing "Guess the plot" which was a bit of a no brainer really. Only stand out performance was Basil Wallace as Screwface, the big baddie of the film, a complete voodoo psychopath :)

The ending to the two films above (Wrestler and BAR) annoyed me a bit.
The Wrestler just for the way it's left so open, I know some people might like this but I much prefer to have the story teller finish the story rather than leave it up to me.
Burn After Reading, well that just came across like they got bored and so tied up every loose end with a single conversation at the end, bish bash bosh done, next film.
However, both I think were good films overall.
He's Just Not That Into You
Quite enjoyed this. I expected a very frivolous romantic comedy that was very fluffy for want of a better word. Instead it was quite a good comedy drama, less comedy, more drama than I thought. It made a pleasant change to see flawed characters too. So used to seeing perfect characters in films like this that it was nice to see more 'normal' people. Or at least as normal as Hollywood will allow us to have ;)

Tropic Thunder
My second viewing of this as I saw it originally at the cinema last summer. Really enjoyed this again. It lost a bit of its magic as I knew Tom Cruise was in it (can't believe I didn't realise first time round ;D), but still good fun. Robert Downey Jr was brilliant in it and really made the film as he almost always does. Really good turn by him. The DVD extras were good too with some nice bonus comedic fake trailers etc on top of the fake trailers already at the start of the film.

Funny Face
Audrey Hepburn is a winsome bookish philosophy geek who dreams of visiting Paris and discussing Kant late into the night with cheap plonk and Galoises, but sees fashion as frivolous. Fred Astaire is the fashion photographer who spies her potential and whisks her away as the new face of 'Quality' magazine.
Sneaking in at the tailend of the Hollywood musical heyday the song and dance numbers are entertaining but nothing particularly novel or memorable. The plot just about rivals a Mr Men book for multilayered depth and complexity. The film relies heavily on the redoubtable charm of Hepburn and Astaire although the romance between them is a little unsettling given he's comfortably old enough to be her father.
5/10
Death Proof
The Tarantino half of the Grind House double header that got a split release outside of the states. Mostly involves various 20 somthing women in hotpants chatting in much the same way as the opening of Reservoir Dogs but with less snappy or memorable dialogue.
For a film supposedly about a serial killer there is precious little gore. The low fidelity feel given to the film stock gets tiresome after all of 10 minutes.
Self indulgent in the extreme, and bloated with extraneous waffle, it's mostly filler and very little killer. 3/10

Léon: The Professional
Watched this again for perhaps the first time in 8 or 9 years and it's actually gotten better. Jean Reno in the role he will always be remembered for and rightly so because watching him in this role is like watching a master of any trade performing for your pleasure, he's a joy to watch in every aspect and for the hundreds of movies I've watched in my life, very few come close to having such mesmerizing and enthralling performances as this, I sat watching it for the first 100 minutes and didn't move a single muscle, Léon is a power house title that delivers in every area from the casting, location, story to possibly the most beautiful soundtrack on any movie of its kind.
Then we get onto the performances of Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman. Natalie Portman is only 13 years old when this film was released, yet her performance as an actress is up there with actesses 3 or 4 times her age, it was clear that she was something special even then and it staggers me to think that someone like Abagail Breslin, whilst good in Little Miss Sunshine received an Oscar nomination and Ellen Page in Juno the same, that Natalie Portman was overlooked 15 years ago for Léon in her role as Mathilda, the daughter of a family killed by crooked D.E.A. cops and taken in by a Hitman, for an Oscar because she was truly unbelievable... I'm not one for being able to put up with Kids onscreen a lot of the time for fear of overacting, but Portman in this was perfect.
Then we have Gary Oldman, someone I've often said is the greatest actor to win an Oscar (he's never even been nominated), and in this he gives the sort of off the wall, scary performance you know he can deliver time and again, his screen prescence is immense in this film playing the head of the crooked DEA police force.
For anyone that hasn't seen this movie it's perhaps the greatest of its ilk, its only shame is that it never picked up an Oscar nomination in possibly the most amazing year of Movie making ever, 1994 (Léon, Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption), but believe me, it definitely holds its weight against anything I've ever seen.
10/10.

I hope it lives up to all of this praise.
The Italian Job (original 1969 version)
I love this film..... just about one of my favourite scenes in the whole film:
Yes, well, not to put a too fine point to it, he was discovered... in the lounge.
- Er... doing what, Miss Peach?
Where?
-In the, er... lounge.
Oh, yes, he was doing it. Yes.
-What?
Oh. Well, something quite obscene.
With Annette.
- A net?
Annette. She was terrified, of course.
-Naturally.
Yes, well, would you like some tea?

The Wrestler (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1125849/)
This is a drama about an aging professional wrestler, decades past his prime, who now barely gets by working small wrestling shows in VFW halls and as a part-time grocery store employee. As he faces health problems that may end his wrestling career for good he attempts to come to terms with his life outside the ring: by working full time at the grocery store, trying to reconcile with the daughter he abandoned in childhood and forming a closer bond with a stripper he has romantic feelings for. He struggles with his new life and an offer of a high-profile rematch with his 1980s arch-nemesis, The Ayatollah, which may be his ticket back to stardom
I watched this on Friday and it's not all spandex and testosterone. I wondered what all the hype was about and found I was impressed with the overall story. It's a funny film as at first glance you can be easily critical of it. There are a lot of sub plots bubbling away that could have easily took the film another 45 minutes longer and still grasped the audience, in essesnce it's too short as the story could have been developed a lot more.
However the overall plot delivers well and Mickey Rourke plays the part of Randy 'The Ram' Robinson quite well. Not a lot can be said unless it spoils the story but well worth watching all the same 7.5/10

Beowulf
Pretty good, and I was surprised the acting came across well for an animated film (well, it's acted but animated over the top). If you can ignore what Ray Winstone really looks like and try not to imagine it's 'him' playing the part, he does a very good job on the voice. Most of the other characters look like their real-life counterparts, and John Malkovich impresses as he often does. I'm not sure it would have worked so well as a live-action film, and would probably have had ten times the budget, so all-in-all a wise decision.
7/10
Alien vs. Predator: Requiem
The first AvP was watchable, and at least had some of the mystery and iconography that the original Predator movies had, but this was just gash on toast. Even the action scenes in this were almost entirely filmed in near pitch black so I couldn't even tell how many aliens there were, whether it mattered that they were alien-predator hybrids, or who of the human characters had perished. Of these, some were introduced and immediately killed off. Others we learn seemingly random back-stories to that have no bearing on whether they die or not, or aren't pertinent to the dynamic of the story. We don't even really find out why the aliens were there in the first place, even though the opening scene shows a Predator ship crash-landing after being taken over by aliens. What were they doing on the ship? How did they escape? Was there a ten-second clip at the end of the last one which is meant to explain the start of this one? Who knows. I'm also concerned as to why the Predator just randomly killed even non-threatening humans, and took the time to skin them alive when he's meant to be there getting rid of the aliens. What happened to the sympathetic tribal companionship we built up in the last film? I can only think the people responsible for the film hate me personally and went out of their way to contradict the tacit knowledge built up from my loyal following of the preceeding movies.
1/10, because someone gets their face melted.

9/10 Simply superb send up of rock music and excess, one of the all-time best comedy films in existence and it more or less created the genre of mockumentary. If you've never watched it then do yourself a favour and watch it, no really, do so now and turn it all the way up to 11.

Undoubtedly he plays the part well. His own life experiences must certainly have played into him playing the role well. I think it shows the past 12 months, bar a few exceptions, has been a barren landscape for quality movies if the Wrestler is a serious contender for an Oscar. All imho of course :)

Is to Tony Jaa what Rumble in the Bronx was to Jackie Chan - a great showcase for the stars supreme athleticism and martial prowess but otherwise a clumsy and poorly played story largely unsuitable for western audiences.
There's a cameo from Chan himself to keep an eye out for.

Were we watching the same film?
Maybe that's a bit harsh. Essentially the film was enjoyable, and funny in places. Kari and I both were turning and looking at each other on regular occasions because it seemed we were missing at least half the humour. They were trying to make conversations like it was old friends reconnecting with years of history, and to an extent they succeeded, but because we hadn't been there 10 years ago+ it made it feel very awkward like we were always missing something subtle.
One last pondering.. does John get his sister every job? Seems like I keep coming across her in his films.

End of the first film the predator carried back on to the ship is impregnated. You see several clear pointers towards this back when he was inside the pyramid, and then at the end of the film.

Taken
Quite a few people have said that this is how Bond & Bourne should have been done. They are wrong!
It's a fun action/thriller will some good action sequences but not much more. I knew it was only ~90 minutes going in so found the story setup too long and it didn't make me like any of the characters (important when you're supposed to be routing for them). The ending was the typical Hollywood "it's all over now so lets completely forget the horrific things that have been happening for the last few days" happy ending that I should have been expecting but was dissapointed to see.
If you can get past the weak story line (it tries to be an action thriller but fails at the thriller part) then it's an 8/10. If you want the thriller aspect then 6/10 so overall a pretty solid

Aha, in that case the follow-up would have really benefited from just showing 90 seconds of catch-up. Or maybe not. The rest of it was fairly contemptuous!

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Overly long for what it is, which is the story of a young lad who idolises Jesse James and finds himself a part of his crew. Casey Affleck is superb in his role and makes it look like most of the other cast are just getting the job done. He's suitably on edge for the whole film and made me as the viewer feel uncomfortable in his presence, as he does to the other characters.
I found it hard to tell whether the narration was necessary. It kind of drops in and out and almost serves as a lazy way of explaining bits they've missed out - but then this is based on a book so maybe it was the only way to get all the info in. At least once or twice though it felt like they were explaining what the characters were thinking, when it felt quite obvious to me from the acting what was going on.
I'll just add that I thought the direction was amazing. Some brilliantly framed scenes and great use of awkward pauses and prolonged silences. Just a shame it made the film at least half an hour too long.

1408
As a Stephen King adaptation I was worried that this would stink, as they don't often translate well to screen. Thankfully they did a really good job on it.
It really is a hark back to early horror/thriller, with an awesome dynamic in the few scenes where John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson get to throw dialogue back and forth. This film could have been made fifty years ago (minus the special effects) and would stand up today, although no doubt Hollywood would have remade it already. /cynic
Although I wish the ending could have been better portrayed, there were a couple of neat turns along the way and some genuinely unsettling moments. There were still a couple of make-you-jump moments but they weren't cheap, and they used them in the right ways unlike many modern horrors that use them as a safety net.
Cusack is perfect for the main role, and I can't imagine any modern actors in his place as the perpetual sceptic; it's the kind of role that Jimmy Stewart would have excelled at.
A good gauge of whether I like certain films is if I'd watch them again just to see other people's reactions. This is one of those.
9/10
The Pursuit of Happyness
Two hours of sheer frustration as down-on-his-luck Will Smith and his kid go further down on their luck at every turn. It reminded me of shows like 'Stressed Eric' and 'The Worst Day of My Life', which were meant to be comedies but I just couldn't watch them. There's just no caché for me in 'entertainment' that relies solely on the continuous misfortunes of the characters. I lost emotional interest in the film after about the third time the main character misplaced another portable bone density scanner and had to find another way to pay a surprise bill. It felt very much like Will Smith just wanted to show himself as a good father and devised the plot himself as a showcase.*
The film just never really takes off; it's just a constant uphill slog against a series of bad luck and the character's tenacity in the face of it.
The kid plays his part awesomely though. At times I forgot he's just a child acting because he was so natural. But then his actual father is Will Smith.
Nicely made film with some good touches, but half the time it feels like watching an exercise in futility.

*I should add that the film is based on a true story, but my comment still stands.

Sex Drive.
Actually very funny with a great cast including the legend that is James Marsden.
Eighteen-year-old Ian Lafferty sets out on a cross country drive with his best friends Lance and Felicia in order to lose his virginity to a red-hot babe he met on the Internet. But the journey, filled with hilarious misadventures and raunchy escapades, teaches all three more than they expected about life and love. Randy, raucous and unexpectedly romantic, Sex Drive follows three friends on the road trip of a lifetime!
Ian Lafferty (Josh Zuckerman) can't seem to catch a break. He's taunted by his cocksure older brother Rex (James Marsden), shown up in the romance department by his 14-year-old younger brother and humiliated by his job at a mall donut shop. But Ian's biggest problem is that he's about to start college as a virgin!
Getting nowhere with the girl of his dreams and longtime best friend Felicia (Amanda Crew), Ian resorts to the Internet for dates. He soon hooks up with Ms. Tasty, a flaming hot blonde who can't wait to get busy. The only catch: Ian has to drive 500 miles from Chicago to Knoxville to consummate the deal.
Egged on by his devil-may-care pal Lance (Clark Duke), Ian risks life and limb by appropriating The Judge, Rex's prized vintage Pontiac GTO. With Lance and Felicia in tow, he hits the road for a one-time rendezvous that will rock his world!
For me definitely a surprise comedy a la Eurotrip (but not as good), I really enjoyed many of the main and supporting characters and found myself guffawing aloud in the early hours many a time.

It's funny but I was talking about this with friends tonight. I think I could watch one of the Bourne movies every weekend and still never cease to be entertained by them.
Some people just don't like sequels, but personally I don't care if they make Bourne#20 as long as it's as good as the first one.

Piggymon didn't like it either! I saw it just over a week ago and was gripped by it. It was gritty, suspenseful, and DDL was awesome. His character was meant to be generally unlikeable, but I ended up really liking him from the start, but growing to hate him. One of the best last lines in a film ever too - almost Shakespearian. I'd give it 9/10.

My friend said it was a total snore fest when it came out. I've since heard every single other person who's watched it since say exactly the same.
Barring Belmit now...
A lot of the enjoyment for me came from the conflict between the self-proclaimed 'oil man' and the self-sanctifying, self-important preacher played brilliantly by Paul Dano. Maybe I got a lot out of it as it challeneged my own beliefs; I was rooting against who I perceived to be the bad guy but in the end neither was much better than the other (something I maybe should have spotted earlier on had my views not been so biased). I still feel somewhat vindicated in my choice though, despite the outcome.
Seen loads of films over the past fortnight so just some quicky reviews:
Bee Movie
Very odd. With the spate of computer-generated animations over the last 10 or so years I thought I knew pretty much what to expect. For the most part I was right, but the plot is just so... weird. A bee living in a natural hive in Central Park leaves to look aorund the outside world. He finds out humans harvest honey for themselves on giant bee farms and decides to sue the humans and put a stop to it.
Well scripted and nice visuals, but I just couldn't get around the fact that the plot is so strange. I'm also not a fan of Jerry Seinfeld as a voice actor. Some funny parts, especially from the husband of the flower shop owner who is voiced by the same guy that does Joe in Family Guy... and uses exactly the same affectations to briliant effect.

A Scanner Darkly
Philip K. Dick short story with live actors but interpolated rotoscoping used to make it animated. Works well, and gives a kind of psychadelic feel to it, which is good considering the plot surrounds an undercover cop setting up a drugs bust. Excellent performances from Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr., and the animation covers up Keanu Reeves usual acting prowess, which helps with the immersion. As you'd expect from a Philip K. Dick adaptation it's quite cerebral and occasionally confusing, but overall very good. The only downside of using a short story is that often it's just building up to a single twist or reveal, giving little payback for an hour and a half's viewing. This film appears to do so, but gives a little extra at the end that makes for a satisfying ending.

Be Kind Rewind
Again, I thought I knew what to expect from a film surrounding Jack Black and Mos Def accidentally wiping all the video tapes in the store and having to remake them themselves. I was happily wrong on this occasion.
Of course there's a little slapstick, but the main thrust of the story is from its heart. If you can forgive some of the oversentimentality put in place mainly by the slightly contrived plotline (the store is due to be demolished and its elderly owner (Danny Glover) is being removed from the neighbourhood he grew up on) then you're in for a treat.
Their attempts to recreate the film are, of course, pathetically hilarious, but people start to love the amateur productions and suddenly they're minor celebrities in their own right.
Some nice little special effects for such a budget movie, and some truly innovative methods used by the characters to create their own special effects within the context of the plot too. I definitely felt a 'Clerks' vibe from it, not least because of the setting, but all the neighbourhood characters felt real as well.
I'm struggling between giving this an 8 or a 9, but either way, it's nice to see there are still some mainstream flms being made with strong storylines and characters that aren't just rehashes of older stories or cash-ins.
Employee of the Month
Slightly formulaic film about slacker employees working at a cash and carry, where the new girl (Jessica Simpson in a surprisngly understated, non-slutty, intelligent role) is believed to only date the employee of the month. I missed the first ten minutes so I never found out how they know this, but it didn't exactly impede my understanding of the film.
It's the same old 'loser picks up his game to win the girl only for her to find out he was only doing it to sleep with her' affair. The guy then makes a lame apology about how through the experience he learned about himself and wins her over. The proper entertainment comes from the bit-part characters and the store's sleazy golden boy who always wins employee of the month and is also looking to get in on the action. It's these perfomances that just about elevate the movie above the average for the genre, but since I'd rate the average for the genre as below average overall, this gets a 5/10.
Blade Runner: Final Cut
Not sure I really need to review this. I've not had a chance to properly compare the various editions but this is the 'final' version with which Ridley Scott had complete creative control. Unlike some of his peers who have tampered with their creations to detrimental effect, it seems he has put right what the studios did wrong when releasing their so-called Director's Cut.
Still as thought-provoking and grimy as when it was released, the visuals and atmosphere are spot on. One of the original Philip K. Dick adaptations and probably the best, despite its meandering from the original story and exclusion of certain premises.

Just went to see The Young Victoria. It wasn't my choice but I actually enjoyed it - very interesting powerplay and political elements to it; quite a lot I didn't know previously. The romantic side of things was nicely underplayed. If you don't like historical things generally you won't enjoy it, but if don't get put off thinking it's a costume drama - it's not. Geoffrey Rush plays David Helfgott, the talented piano player troubled by his upbringing and forced into a nervous breakdown by his own genius. Rush rightly won Best Actor at the Oscars for his portrayal, and I'm ashamed that I'd not seen it until recently.
The chap playing his father acted his part to the letter - I truly despised the character and his selfishness in thinking that his own son's success would disband the family. As expected, it was this attitude that accomplished this in the end.
Special mention must go to Noah Taylor who plays the adolescent David. He was probably portraying the character for half of the movie but never received the plaudits that Rush got. I couldn't figure out where I'd seen him before either and had to look it up. He was the geeky sidekick in the Tomb Raider movies, and Charlie's dad in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

Yeah, I pretty much agree with that. I find Dick to be a hugely overestimated writer. He mostly stuck to short stuff and still managed to dilute one half conceived idea over 20 odd pages. But it does provide a good launchpad for a film because the story isn't too complex to adapt, unlike Asimov for instance.
I love the style used during the film but there's not quite enough plot to fill the time and the narrative is a bit scruffy. Plenty of good performances as you said.

You're a bit more generous than me. I found this to be mostly sentiment and very little substance. The bits that worked really well were the sweded versions of the films - but this made up 10 minutes of the run time at the very most.

The Day the Earth Stood Still(2008 version)
I have been really looking forward to this film as I have a penchant for 1950's sci-fi classics. If you look beyond some of the wooden acting there are some really meaningful stories behind them. None less prevalent in the 50's and none less prevalent now.
On the whole I was really disappointed with the film. Not because of the acting. If you want some wooden acting you can guarantee that It's either going to be Keanu Reeves or Hugh Grant. So no big surprises or let downs there. The role of Klatu had to be filled by someone wooden as a box of wood. He acted his role as needed but there was little scope for anything else.
The story was there but the whole film felt rushed and missing something. It didn't have that epic feel that mankind is standing on the brink of self destruction and that moment would be the make or break of it.
I can't put the blame at Reeve's door because any other actor would have struggled with this movie. I have to be harsh and give it at best 5/10

I was trying to forget The Day The Earth Stood Still remake and you've just gone and reminded me. It's odd because I walked out saying "hmm, wasn't too bad but a bit badly done" and then I thought about it for a bit longer and started getting annoyed, it was rubbish all the way through, no real sense of suspense and as for the ending.... I'm actually tempted to state exactly what happens knowing that it would be impossible to ruin the film but I won't.
Still it does feature Jennifer "ass to ass" Connelly* but even she can't save it. It also features Will Smith's kid and John Cleese, Mr Cleese at the least should have given this a bodyswerve - dodgy hip or not.
*unfortunately whatever she does now I can never quite see beyond that moment in Requiem For A Dream.
Watched so many filums since being in here! Doh! Most recent though:
The Postman.
I recorded this thinking it would be a film Picky wouldn't want to watch after reading it was about a loner who finds a postmans uniform and post bag and decides to assume his identity and occupation. In my head I figured it would be a nice film about a chap walking around a town posting things. I *completely* missed the whole "Post apocalyptic" part :p
In short, a non official army has taken control of most of the settlements in an area of post apocalyptic America, demanding unreasonable amounts of food and stock from struggling hamlets and forcing young boys and men to enrol with them. Their commander, self named Bethlehem, is a complete blood and power hungry loon bag. Kevin Costner, a travelling actor, ends up being caught up with this army and in the process of trying to escape the regime, he stumbles across a postman van and decides it would be an opportunity to take on the dead drivers identity. Originally his plans are to use the identity to fool communities into thinking a government had been restored and reap the benefits of being a government official (food, a place to sleep etc). As you can guess, tables turn and eventually he ends up commanding a whole team of postie people, bringing hope, happiness and a sense of importance to the hamlets. This... makes Mister Bethlehem very very unhappy and a war pursues between these unguarded towns and the psycho army!
It's a bloooooming long film and a little bit weird in places, but it's really very enjoyable. I won't be watching it again soon but I certainly will do in the future I'm sure :)

Supposedly true dramatisation of the story of Charles Bronson (the prisoner).
Saw this last night on the strength of my mate showing me the trailer on her iPhone and a minute or two of 'go on come with us'.
I enjoyed it a fair bit, some of it was quite interesting and made you think a bit but most of it was mindless enjoyment. It didn't really seem to have a start or an end, so much as just being 'there' which was a bit odd feeling but didn't detract too much from the enjoyment as it didn't feel like it needed a 'conclusion' so to speak.
8/10, i'd happily sit through it again.

Enchanted
Cartoon snow white/sleeping beauty type character, Giselle (Amy Adams), lives in a house with all her friendly creatures that help her with the housework and is waiting for her "True Love's Kiss" (and sings about it)
Prince Edward (James Marsden) hears her singing and is desperate to meet his True Love and "True Love's Kiss" (and yes, he sings the same song about it spontaneously too)
They meet, "fall in love", and are to be married the very next day.
Prince Edward's step mother, the Queen, is unhappy about this as she'll have to surrender her crown should this marriage occur, so she sends Giselle into modern day New York, where everything changes from cartoon to real life filming. Prince Edward comes to rescue her.
The film gets many little laughs from the naivety of Giselle and her view of how the world should work and contrasting it to a modern New York, and especially her slow learning of how love really works upon meeting a rather cynical Divorce Lawyer (Patrick Dempsey)
In the end though, it's quite a lovely little film, charming and with laughs for people of all ages without feeling like they thought "Oh.. just put in a joke here for adults" or whatever. In many regards it still remains true to it's Disney roots, never really hits you with deep concepts or characters, just good ol' fashioned entertainment.

After a few people state that is was bobbins, I thought "What the hell" and watched it. I can now say for certainty that they were correct. Could have been a good film but just seemed 'meh'. I couldn't have cared less if anyone lived or died and the ending just seemed like a total cop out.

The Watchmen.
A comic for adults and most certainly a movie for adults, it's a very dark realisation from page to screen and surprised even me with its violence, which I was very happy with, it certainly sets it apart from the others.
It's brilliantly acted, has a very deep plot and the characters are superb. I don't want to say too much incase I spoil anything for anyone, but I'd recommend it to anyone.

Taken
Difficult one. Good acting with some utterly fantastic fight scenes. I feel i must focus on the fight scenes with this one because the thing is, i'm utterly fed up with this 'shakey cam' that so many action films have adopted recently. I'm not sure whether they were an excuse to allow for poor choreography or just an artistic decision but they are terrible, you can never see what's going on and it usually leaves me feeling a little ill. This film however did them perfectly, even while under the influence of a bottle of wine i knew exactly who was where and what they were doing and it was just utterly awesome for it. That said though, the story took the role of being shakey, the whole film seemed to scream 'send your young american daughter to europe and they will get kidnapped by greasy europeans!', it just didn't seem to make sense. When she was kidnapped and the dad asked the step-father 'have you got any enemies in europe?!' i thought, 'oh ok, it wasn't random, there was a premeditated motivation for her kidnap', nope, turns out it wasn't that, just greasy europeans.
Great ride, but left a hint of a sour taste in my mouth.

More like the feature length pilot episode of a TV series than a film - albeit with lots of effects shots. If that was the only problem it wouldn't be so bad but the plot is jumbled, the pacing is erratic and the acting is stilted. At least it's short.

I'd have to disagree, Bourne Identity is really good and the other two are a good but not great although in fairness it is a while since I've watched them so I may be romanticising the first. Daniel Craig is perhaps mildly unfortunate that Quantum Of Solace had a rubbish script, rubbish theme (truly atrocious) and it just felt like a generic action film - in fact it could have been fitted into Casino Royale with a bit more discretion shown at the editing stage.

Zodiac :
This started off fairly well, and the cast put in a good performance. There's sometimes that extra sense of intrigue when a movie starts of with "..based on true events..[sic]". Though it was just too long, and towards the end I got bored. Not really a recommended watch therefore. 4/10
The Number 23 :
I got this simply because I wanted to watch a Jim Carrey film. I'm a huge fan of his and especially enjoy his more serious roles. This film started off well, and had moments which were visually fantastic. The score was a bit of dud however, and as soon as I worked out where the film was going the ending was too obvious. Carrey did well, but the script was a bit rubbish. It also handled the slightly religious/god aspect of it poorly. 4/10
Going to watch "And Now For Something Completely Different" now. :)

Western
9/10 One of those films I should have watched earlier, I'm generally not a fan of westerns as a genre but this is superb. Then again looking at the first four listed actors it would be slightly difficult to screw it up entirely.
Rescue Dawn
Christian Bale is a pilot shot down in Laos during the Vietnam war and imprisoned with the zany sidekick from Sahara and Daniel Faraday from Lost. Based loosely on a true story it's about how they try and escape the prison to escape through the jungle.
I really enjoyed it, though Christian Bale didn't really come across as someone I should be rooting for. I felt fairly unsympathetic towards his character. Funnily enough, a quick bit of research shows that maybe the 'true story' isn't quite as black and white as it's portrayed, and his real-life character not as heroic as they made him.
The Eugene character (guy from Lost) is shown to be slightly mad and snidey, and apparantly this is a bit of a character assassination. Steve Zahn plays his part extremely well - better than Bale I thought.
If you're a Christian Bale fan you'll probably really like it regardless, but don't go out of your way to see it. Suspenseful at times, especially the escape attempt, but ultimately unfulfilling.
6/10
Rambo AKA John Rambo AKA Rambo LXVIIII
Gloriously violent (final?) outing for John Rambo, rescuing some God-botherers from war-torn Burma. I expected more from the story, considering Stallone is actually pretty good at that sort of thing, as shown with the last Rocky movie. That said, it keeps a nice pace and the violence is just amazingly realistic. Bodies get torn apart, beheaded, holes blown through them, burst with sniper fire... it's done very well indeed and added an extra something to the movie, and not just gratuitousness.
The British accent on the head mercenary is shocking... especially if the actor actually is British, and detracted from the immersion for me. But that's just nit-picking.
I'd watch this again, and then go back and watch the main rescue attempt just to marvel in the gory insanity. Had they wrapped up the whole Rambo story in the same vein as Rocky, and brought it full circle, this could have been proper movie greatness. As such they only touched on the whole 'Rambo wasn't just built to kill, he was born a killer' theme, and kind of tacked a little ending on the end so we can make our own minds up. Maybe I was expecting too much, or maybe... just maybe, they could have done with a really good final push.

[REC]
Spanish horror film with subtitles.
Lady journalist and cameraman follow firefighters to a routine call while filming a mundane TV show, only for all hell to break loose in an old apartment building involving a strange infection, quarantine by the government, and a whole lot of shaky camera action.
A little too high on the character stupidity scale, and despite some stellar performances a bit too hot-blooded for my liking (in terms of overly emotional shouty Spaniards). The story is good and the camera work actually does add to the suspense, and you share the frustration of the characters in not knowing what's going on.
Some truly terrifying faces-in-the-camera-spotlight moments as the characters drop one by one from the zombie-esque infection. The final scene is pant-wettingly spooky but ends with a sudden barrage of explanation followed by none at all.
Scary (especially that bloody attic bit), but I wanted another couple of minutes just for someone to really figure out what was going on. It's kind of explained, but in the last few moments when you're trying to read subtitles and watch out for ghoulies at the same time, and sort of washes over you.

8/10. That was one of the funniest films I've seen in aages. It's stars nobody of note (though the lead actress was hawt) and they barely spoke. It was narrated, but as the old saying goes a picture (or video) tells a thousand words.
The story by far isn't a wholly new one, but the title kind of gives away what country it's set in and therefore in the back of my mind I had certain ideas of seriousness about it. Deffo recommend this.

American teen film about MMA
5/10 It's entertaining enough provided you take it just at face value but I found myself really rather disliking both the villian and the supposed hero of the piece. The best acting of the whole shebang unquestionably comes from Djimon Hounsou who should be beating his agent senseless for allowing him to appear in this film, I'm glad he did turn up though as it saved the film at least a point in the ranking scale.
In Bruges
Exactly my cup of tea. Would make a good stage play - a real tragi-comedy. All the actors play their parts spot on, and clearly Ralph Fiennes has been taking a few pointers from Ben Kingsley, or at least watching Sexy Beast a lot.
Didn't know what was going to happen from one scene to the next and it was over before I knew it, in a good way. One line near the end absolutely slayed me. I won't spoil it, but will simply refer to it as Fiennes' 'canal line' so you can identify it. Brilliant.

Gone Baby Gone
Casey Affleck, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman
Dir. Ben Affleck
Tightly wound detective thriller about a little girl’s abduction from a poor area of Boston which wraps around a core of moral ambiguity which demands discussion after viewing. Ben Affleck does a superb job bringing the story to the screen and also draws fine performances from the cast. My only minor criticisms are that he fails to reign in Freeman’s stagey dramatics to match the naturalism of the remaining cast and effectively forces a judgement on the audience with a largely unnecessary coda.

Hellboy II : The Golden Army
A glorious window into the fevered imagination of Guillermo Del Toro where fantastic creature design, make-up and effects and a focus on likeable characters almost disguise a formulaic and oddly uninspired story and typical setpiece-exposition-setpiece-exposition structure. Luke Goss (yeah him from Bros:shocked:) is rather good as the elf prince with a grudge.

The Spirit.
Not having the graphic novel I had no idea what the film was going to be like, apart from being another Sin City/300 clone. I wasn't wrong, every trick Frank Miller learned making those movies has been used here, granted it's looks like it is supposed to be semi film noir(ish) but it doesn't seem the gel witht he script which plays out like an old Saturday afternoon matinee of cheesy jokes.

Biggest pile of ****ing horse **** I've ever had the misfortune of watching. Only politeness for a friend stopped me vomiting all over the DVD case and leaving the room. Nearly two hours of Drew Barrymore, quite possibly the most overrated woman in the world in terms of attractiveness. She seems to have once possessed a face, but then decided to run over it with a streamroller. It wasn't just her face that's flat either, it was her acting, and the entire story. It could/should have had some decent twists, instead you saw the ending coming 20 minutes in, and incidentally the ending was the best part. It could have done with being sooner, as in, right at the start.
