Seven Samurai is high on my list. Only problem is I watch my movies on my iPod nano, so I don't know how well the subtitles will come out on a tiny screen :D

Inception

9.5/10

Christopher Nolan pulls together an all star cast headed by Leonardo Di Caprio. Set in a world of corporate espionage, Cobb (Di Caprio) is about the best there is at "Extraction", i.e. going in to peoples dreams and extracting information from their subconscious. Cobb longs to return home to his kids but is barred from the US and any country with an extradition arrangement.... until he's offered one last job, unlike any other attempted before, that will pave the way for a return.

I absolutely loved it. Beautifully executed, engrossing story, fascinating concepts. Took Kari about half our drive back from the cinema to figure out whether she actually liked it, once she'd wrapped her head around it. Make no bones about it, this film is an absolute mind job, but it's not without its laugh-out-loud moments. Suitably entertained and enthralled :) Kid a few seats over from me was absolutely on the edge of his seat for most of the film.

Really solid performances all round, great to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Tommy from 3rd Rock from the Sun) playing an adult role, which he does really well Loved the changing gravity fight sequences, and the kiss. I'm looking forward to seeing Ellen Page in more roles in the future too. I've not seen Juno so this is about the first time I've seen her in a major role.

A full 10/10 for me, one of my favourite films ever. I do have to deduct 0.5 for the totally unnecessary 'is he out' thing at the end of the film. Was great to have a film in which the two main male/female leads in the film didn't fall in love or even show any romantic attraction in the slightest.

I really want to hold off on doing a review as I'd rather see it again first, but I'll say now that I think this will be one of the most important films of the decade. I agree that it deserves a 9.5, possibly 10 out of 10. The half a point I'd knock off is not for the same reason though as I happen to think that the point you raise Garp was a cherry on top of the Epic Sundae, and trying not to give anything away I think it finished the movie in the best way it possibly could.

The half-point I'd knock off is for Leonardo DiCaprio.

The man can act, and he played this part as well as it could have been played but who will remember his character? When I watch a Johnny Depp film I think back and I remember Edward Scissorhands, Ichabod Crane, Willy Wonka, Jack Sparrow, Raoul Duke... I don't remember Johnny Depp. Leonardo DiCaprio once again plays a troubled version of himself as he seems to have done in almost all his films since What's Eating Gilbert Grape, or maybe The Quick and the Dead or Titanic. He did what needed to be done but after such a fantastic film I really feel like I ought to be able to bond with the main character far more than I did (and let's be fair, the film was almost entirely about his character). It really feels like any mainstream Hollywood actor could have taken this role and done it justice, but few could have made it their own and I don't think DiCaprio does this. On the other hand maybe I'm wrong and I just don't like DiCaprio. *shrug* Paradoxically, I've never enjoyed anything Joseph Gordon-Levitt has done until this.

Either way, the horror of becoming trapped in a dream will stay with me for a long time, moreso than any other film that has portrayed dying in real life, and I think that's what endears me to this most of all. A fate worse than death if you will.

Loved it :) Excellent film. Can't quite decide if it's my favourite film of the year so far (Shutter Island would be the other for me) and I'd certainly like to see it a second time, but it was brilliant. Deserved all the hype imo.

I saw it, and for all the hype, I honestly wouldn't recommend it as a 'it's 3rd in the imdb.com list' kind of film. It was very good, lovely special effects, great score..ish, but just not worth all the hype that seemed to surround it for the last few weeks'

I often wonder if hype really spoils films for people these days. I knew nothing about Inception when I went to see it except for the names Nolan and DiCaprio, and now it's one of my favourite films. Compare that to Avatar which I saw a month or so after release and dragged myself to see it after all the hype... I could take it or leave it.

It probably does for many people.

I'd heard a lot of people rave about Inception on Twitter but I didn't actually know anything about the film as I'd avoided all reviews and articles on it. Mind you, if there hadn't been any hype I'd have certainly gone to see it just because of the director.

Predators

Adrien Brody
Topher Grace
Alice Braga et. al.

7/10

I went in to see this slightly skeptical but after having heard a few good reviews. Lets be honest, the Predators have got progressively less scary with every movie appearance, and I had fears that this would be yet more of the watering down. The only difference this time being that it's R rated here.

9 humans wake up to find themselves in free-fall with a parachute strapped to their chests, and they land in a jungle. All had the same story, they were just going about doing their normal stuff, they saw a white light and then next minute it's free-fall time baby.

All but one are killers from a variety of races, American ex-black ops turned merc., Israeli Defense Force, Russian spetsnaz, Japanese yakuza enforcer etc. And then there is this random doctor amongst the bunch, totally out of his element.

Fairly quickly the story is pieced together: they're "game" in a hunting preserve for the Predator race and the Predators are out to kill them.

All in all I rather enjoyed it. Adrien Brody is strong as the lead character, appropriately muscular for the role rather than the over-the-top 80s look of Arnie. Alice Braga seemed to be trying to get her teeth into her role, but the dialog let her down, though at least it wasn't a stereotypical woman in action film role (either airhead or ridiculously macho.)

All the actors carry off their roles believably. The film is a little predictable in that you can pretty much peg the death order within a few minutes of them meeting, and to be honest I missed some of the 80s cheesy lines. If you enjoyed the first film you'll probably enjoy this one, though I'm at odds to say whether it's worth seeing it on the big screen or not.

Watched this yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it :)

Would probably score it about the same as the dialogue is fairly weak. But it has predators in it :D

Some very nice nods to the original film, and proof (if proof be need be) that Yakuza are hard!

I watched that the other day as one of the top 100 movies. I only gave it 6/10 but then I think my expectations were askew. I found it to be incredibly dialogue heavy and will probably need to see it again to appreciate it more. Sellers was awesome in all his roles, but I think I just have a general dislike of Kubrick films. Unfortunately there's about five in the top 100. :/ Once I have 2001 out of the way at least I have the more enjoyable The Shining and Full Metal Jacket left.

Saw Inception a week ago and I'm struggling to shake the feeling that Inception is a film to be admired more than enjoyed.
It's a dazzling technical achievement from a a writer/director operating absolutely at the peak of his game, and showcases Nolan's consummate skill at keeping all his metaphorical plates spinning whilst riding a unicycle in a hurricane.
However did anyone get fully emotionally involved in it? Intellectually, yes, I got a buzz from the cerebral workout, but at any point did I actually care?
Compare that to Toy Story 3 which is like being made redundant, winning the lottery and having a favourite pet die in the space of 2 hours.
Perhaps DiCaprio is partly culpable in this but thinking back over Nolans body of work I'm starting to think that this is an area he really needs to pay more attention to as it seems run through all his movies except possibly Dark Knight.

Valhalla Rising

dQgoGccHJD4

A man with a remarkable talent for violence must fight to survive when he sets out on a remarkable journey in this fantasy from director Nicolas Winding Refn. One-Eye (Mads Mikkelsen) is the nickname given to a nameless, mute warrior who has become a slave to Barde (Alexander Morton), a wealthy Scotsman who obtained One Eye for his remarkable fighting skills. One Eye is a fierce warrior but shows little loyalty to his master, and when the opportunity presents itself, One Eye murders Barde and his mercenaries and sets off on his own, with a young boy (Maarten Stevenson) tagging along to speak on his behalf. Eager to leave Denmark behind in favour of freedom and adventure, One Eye throws in his lot with a band of Christian Vikings, who've set out on an ambitious quest to travel to Jerusalem and claim the Holy Land as their own. But the voyage to the Holy City is a difficult one, and the Vikings are met with violent resistance, forcing One Eye to rely on his talents as a warrior to protect himself and his young apprentice.

0.5/10
it would be zero, but I have to save that just incase there is something worse.
This is all about photography, think how top gear film cars, that is all this is almost 2 hours of fancy camera work on scenery, with one line of speech every 5 minutes. There isn't a huge amount of violence in it a scene every 15 minutes. The rest as I say is scenery, literally minutes and minutes of scenery where nothing happens.

Compare that to Avatar which I saw a month or so after release and dragged myself to see it after all the hype... I could take it or leave it.

I think it certainly does. Let's face it, when it seems the world and his brother are telling you a film is the best thing since the big bang, you expect it to be a life changing event. So, you go and see this awesome, once in a lifetime event and discover that, after all the hype... it's just a film.

People like films for various reasons. Some appreciate the acting, others the cinematography, others the complex dialogue, or intricate plot, or madcap humour or whatever. If you consider the taste of entire population, every film is merely average. Some you'll like more than others, because they fit your tastes better. But the media hype suggests that, unless you find film X to be utterly amazing, there must be something wrong with you. Take Avatar... I haven't seen it. The media hyped it as basically the best film ever, but, well, I know the blue men from the Intel adverts need some kind of employment, but flying around on lizards against a CGI backdrop is not my kind of thing. I have seen trailers from it and have no desire to see it at all.

That's what annoys me about hype and critics. the insinuation that, unless you agree with them, you don't know what you're talking about and your opinion is catagorically wrong. It's like all these food programs nowadays, MasterChef, Great British Menu and such... a couple of arrogant freeloaders telling people thier food tastes like s**t.... nice! How about they get in the kitchen and cook me something I like first?

Nah, I much prefer to go and see a film without any preconceptions of what the media and professional moviegoers want me to think. That way I can make my own judgement without feeling pressurised into feeling something I don't...

Kitten

Just watched Citizen Kane. I'm pretty sure I should have paid more attention to what was going on on-screen as there was undoubtedly subliminal clues placed in various scenes that make this film more than it is. Plus the 'twist' at the end is pretty well-known by now and kind of ruined it partly for me.

That said, the performances were awesome and the cinematography sheer brilliance. Orson Welles is a complete powerhouse and quickly becoming one of my favourite actors. It's weird seeing all these old films now and spotting actors and actresses in some together. A month ago I didn't know who Joseph Cotten was, and could barely have picked Orson Welles out of a line-up. I've now watched them together in two completely separate films mere weeks apart and gone "Oh look, Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten were also in The Third Man together".

Certainly worth an 8/10, maybe more when I see it again.

9/10 Wow. This is a brilliant film, I'd heard the hype and that tends to worry me a bit about films so I'd quite deliberately left watching it for a long time. Clint Eastwood is great as an irascible Korean War veteran who almost despite himself finds that he likes and wants to protect his neighbours - there's a message of redemption and not looking just at face value in there but even if you just watch it as an engrossing story it's fantastic. I don't think there's a bad performance from any of the cast.

I get discount vouchers through work or orange Wednesday, neither of which can be booked in advance, and of course, the booking fee which is ridiculous when you ring up, book and collect/print out - they should be paying me!

Anyway, it's usually fairly spontaneous when I go to the flicks - deciding earlier that day for example, and I just pop in on the way home or pop in before getting something to eat so there isn't a queue. With Inception, we just 30 mins or so before it started, queued for 5 minutes and walked in. That was the day it opened! Filled up by the time it started though. Orange Wednesday isn't that much of a problem either, just get there early, buy the tickets then head off to get some food and come back when the films due to start. Blood: The Last Vampire

6/10

Based on Anime that I've not seen before though will probably make the effort now, this live action film focuses around half-demon Saya.

The plot isn't all that bad, though to try and appeal to a larger market they've added the stereotypical late teens US Army General's daughter, who provides very little real substance to the film other than a convienient hook for plot points.

What is absolutely dire is the CGI. Its low budget and it really, really shows. I swear even Sci-Fi / SyFy originals (like Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus) have better quality CGI than this. It really, really lets the film down which is a shame because the fight sequences would seem so much better if it wasn't for it, but every blood spurt, every sweep of a sword betrays how little they spent on it.

If you can excuse CGI that makes Blade 2 look like the pinnacle of CGI quality, then you'll enjoy it (like I have mostly)

8/10 It's a great film and I know that but in some ways it's not an enjoyable film, on a rewatch I may revise the score but probably upwards as I notice more. It is however still powerful and remains relevant for a critique on mob mentality with commentary on what can or should constitute justice and who is capable of enforcing it.

5/10 From the sublime to the ridiculous to use a cliche. In some ways a good choice to follow M as there's no thinking involved here just good old fashioned bombastic yeehaw, guns, guts and glory although it could really do without the clumsy attempts at a moral at the end of the films. It's not the worst film ever by a long way but at around 2 hours 25 minutes it could have done with a significant amount of editing, yet another film that prizes quantity over quality.

Charlie Wilson's War

Starring Tom Hanks Amy Adams Julia Roberts Philip Seymour Hoffman
Drama based on real events

8/10 I'll start by saying that for some reason I'm not really a Tom Hanks fan, I was actually discussing this the other night and he's the cinematic equivalent of magnolia paint for me - he goes well with almost everything but I tend to barely notice him (which is probably a sign that he's a great actor). However this is a fantastic film, it's very well written (the screenplay is by Aaron Sorkin who wrote The West Wing too), the performances are universally good, there's quite surprising levels of humour and it tells an intriguing story in a taut running time of just over 100 minutes.

I am undoubtedly being a bit harsh on Mr Hanks, I've enjoyed lots of films that he has been in but unlike with some other actors I never find myself thinking that "ah, he's in it, I'd quite like to watch it then" and I can't put my finger on why that should be.

The Last Airbender 3D

From IMDB: Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, the lone Avatar hash the power to manipulate all four elements and teams up with Katara, a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka to restore balance to their war-torn world.

Some great effects, a really good film for the kids. The baddies are bad, the goodies are somewhat annoying but that's probably just me. The 3D is really good in parts but for the whole, pretty disappointing, I'd probably watch it in 2D and save the expense (you could pretty much watch it without the glasses on except in certain parts where waterbending and firebending was going on.

6/10 - probably 8 or 9/10 for the kids.

Dead Man Walking

From IMDB: A convicted murderer on Death Row and the nun who befriends him. Through the portrayal of finely drawn characters and their interactions as the days, hours, and minutes tick down to the condemned man's execution, powerful emotions are unleashed. While Matthew Poncelet and Sister Prejean desperately try to gain a stay of execution from the governor or the courts, scenes are intercut from the brutal crime, gradually revealing the truth about the events that transpired. In addition to her temporal help, the nun also tries to reach out spiritually and assist as a guide to salvation

I've never caught this film before but have wanted to for some time - and have to admit I was pretty disappointed. Expected much more. It didn't hold my attention and I didn't really care about any of the characters (except the murdered kids' families).

Not as bad as I thought it would be, fight scenes reminded me a bit of Kill Bill.

McLovin from Superbad is in it... so is Nicolas Cage (not one of his obvious film choices :/). If it wasn't for the little girl I don't think I would have liked it at all.

Toy Story 3 - 3D

3D. It's just a gimmick, right? Well that's what I thought until we went to see TS3 last night. The film itself is typical TS...great fun, a few jokes thrown in without going over the top and amazingly fun characters doing their stuff through the story. It's a brilliant film and probably my favourite out of the TS trilogy. Now for the 3D. Well I was simply blown away. I was expecting a few snippets of 3D through the film and wondered how I'd know when to put the glasses on but the entire film is 3D and it's simply stunning. It's like watching animated models walking around the screen. Some of the adverts before the film were also 3D and they were great and when some sport came on and a rugby ball came flying towards me I looked like

I usually leave the cinema feeling a little let down and disappointed but not this time.

It's Disney, it's fun, it's Toy Story, it's 3D.....it's 10/10

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

Michael Cera (urgh)
Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Kieran Culkin et. al.

9/10

Plot Summary: Scott (Cera) meets Ramona (Winstead), the woman of his dreams. Unfortunately to continue to date her he has to fight to the death her 7 evil exes. Wrapped around that concept is essentially a coming-of-age film, full of funny quotes, and geeky references.

It's pure unadulterated AWESOME, directed by Edgar Wright, the genius behind "Hot Fuzz", "Sean of the Dead", "Spaced" etc, and his fingerprints are all across it which is no bad thing. I'm told it's reasonably close to the source comic books, but with a few necessary changes due to the format and time constraints. I don't care, but I will be keeping an eye out for them for future reading :)

I found myself with just one criticism at the end. Scott is pretty much Nick, from "Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist", and they're basically the same person: Bassist in an unsigned band (that's trying to get noticed), who is still struggling to get over the heartache of the breakup with his last hot girlfriend, until this new girl appears on the scene. Queue awkward stumbling over words, blank/introspective (delete as appropriate) looks into the distance and so on. Whilst I think Michael is perfectly suited for both roles, it initially jars, and I think I'd rather they'd found someone else for it (or that I'd seen this without having seen him as Nick)

Going the Distance.

Another week, another freebie ;)

Drew Barrymore (Erin) and Jason thingybob (Garrett) (the one that's not Shia LeBouf) meet in New York just after his girlfriend dumps him. She's 31 and is an intern on a newspaper - she gave up her career prospects to be with a guy way back when (they've since split) and is just getting back on track, and is getting ready to leave NY to go back to San Francisco and do a journalism/reporting course.

She moves back and they do the whole long distance thing. She moves in with her sister (brilliantly played by the gorgeous christina Applegate) and her husband. CA plays the simmering, uptight, Waspish sister absolutely superbly, and I'm amazed it's taken so long for these two to be paired up as siblings, as it just works so well.

Don't be put off by the thought that this is a romcom. It is, but it's a different sort of film because it's very 'grown up'. As M&S would say 'This isn't any normal run of the mill RomCom' It's more the Hangover than Sleepless in Seattle. For one thing, they swear a lot, and although I hate to use the phrase, it's very 'real'. You believe in the characters, they aren't too good to be true and they have flaws. Embarrasing ones sometimes and there is one of the best/worst cringeworthy scenes I have ever seen when he first comes to SF to see her. THere are some VERY rude moments, but they aren't gratuitous (I don't think there's any nudity at all) and some of the conversations had by Garrett and his friends are just superb. It's the first time I've been in the cinema for ages where people were quite literally laughing out loud and struggling to contain their laughter afterwards. THere was a young couple next to us and a handful of 60+'s behind us and they were all screeching laughing at several different points.

Anyway, all in all I loved it. Didn't think I would but I did. And Leo, who really thought he wouldn't like it, loved it too. Go see it.

Toy Story 3

Worst of the 3. Far too sentimental *or maybe I'm just a heartless bastard?* Although there was a few funny moments, they were too far apart. Also, it's a touch dark for young kids. Has a couple in tears at points in the cinema last night.

7/10

Little side rant: I'm pretty sure that every trailer before both these had "In 3d" somewhere amongst them. I'll be very happy in a couple of years when they realise that 3d is a complete waste of time... again...

It's taken the cinema industry years to get the majority of screens up to the required brightness for good cinema - so they bring 3d in and the glasses take away 15% of that immediately. And the quality of the movie is decreased - 2k resolution instead of 4k...

I'm fine with 3d, but within a couple of minutes it gives the other half a massive headache and she's on the verge of offloading her lunch. I've heard that this effects between 5 and 13% of people - thats s sizeable chunk of audience.

AND you have to pay more to see a 3d movie?! Evidently to counteract the fact that not everyone will be able to watch it. I suppose that they have to keep the profits up...

Scott Pilgrim is full of epic win and lesbians. Edgar Wright has done an amazing job making a girly romcom for guys who like Capcom :D Its just fluffing brilliant, filled with tiny little nuggets of gaming, 8bit, geeky references. Its kinda like Alley McBeal for gamers.

My only one complaint is the Zelda music in the film isn't on the soundtrack. Thats just insanely criminal!

I want a Sex Bob-omb alarm clock. "WE ARE SEX BOB-OMB AND WE'RE HERE TO MAKE YOU GET THE HELL OUT OF BED!!!!" I also want the comics which are buy 5 get the 6th for free at Forbidden Planet. Dunno whether to buy them or the ones for the iPad. Soundtrack rocks too.

ALLARRRRRRRM!

Das Boot director's cut (1981)

WW2 story following the crew of a German U Boat. Supposed to be quite realistic and the whole film is suspense and terror. You get really drawn into the characters and what's going on around them, the filth, the lack of air, fear, stink. I really wanted the full length film because there has been a shorter version doing the rounds. At 3 hours 19 minutes long I definitely got what I wanted and watched it in German with English subtitles. Loved every minute, despite its epic length.

I quite liked the easter egg ending but it was so subtle that a lot of people didn't notice.

Spoiler Alert! - Highlight below to read!

In the flashback at the end on the ferris wheel if you slow the action right down you can see a pod come hurtleing down from the sky and splash into the water presumably the origin of the monster.

End Spoiler Alert!

However the movie itself was pretty lame as you say good concept but something missing from the mix.

Just watched this, thought that shot was so obvious that I was expecting to see something but couldn't make anything out. Film overall wasn't great, i'm not one who likes my plot spoon fed to me but it really could have done with something to fill the story out a bit more. Mickey Rourke's character's father helped create the original arc reactor with Tony Stark's father years ago. But Rourke's Dad was corrupt and tried to sell the secrets to some dodgy country (then got kicked out of the US for doing so) while Stark's wanted to use it for other means. This meant that Rourke's father died in poverty albeit with the relevant blueprints which he handed down to Rourke to develop with the aim to destroy Stark.

That's from memory so I might be slightly inaccurate somewhere but basic gist of it :)

Invictus

Set around the fall of the Apartheid regime and the rise of South Africa as a nation, culminating in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Mostly the film is about the nation and the people with the sport being just the pivot around which the film revolves.
Good acting, Morgan Freeman does a superb job as Mandela. Matt Damon does a good job as the captain François Pienaar. There wasn't much for him to get his teeth into though. Brilliantly directed by Clint Eastwood, a man I'm gaining great respect for as a Director. He picks his films well.

8/10 - Slow mo in the rugby matches to highlight tension was irritating, but solid film regardless.

I Love You Phillip Morris

Not about a tobacco company as I thought, but rather a supposedly true story about a chap, played by Jim Carrey, who comes out as gay and in order to finance the life he wants for his boyfriend turns to fraud. He gets caught and goes to prison, where he meets and falls in love with Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor, on top form). The remainder of the film details their relationship in prison and Carrey's attempts to get them out.
Very enjoyable film, not as comedic as I expected, but the acting is great and the story very good, especially towards the end. Worth it imo just for McGregor's performance as the shy, soft-spoken Morris. 7/10

History Boys :

In 1980s Britain, a group of young men at Cutlers' Grammar School all have the brains, and the will to earn the chance of getting accepted in the finest universities in the nation, Oxford and Cambridge. Despite the fine teaching by excellent professionals like Mrs Lintott in history and the intellectually enthusiastic Hector in General Studies, the Headmaster is not satisfied. He signs on the young Irwin to polish the students' style to give them the best chance. In this mix of intellectualism and creative spirit that guides a rigorous preparation regime for that ultimate educational brass ring, the lives of the randy students and the ostensibly restrained faculty intertwine that would change their lives forever.

Really enjoyed this. Nothing really happens, i.e. there's no big drama that happens, it just follows these boys and their relationships with each other and the teachers.

Made in Dagenham

A dramatization of the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant, where female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination.

Made by the people who made Calendar Girls, it's set in the late 60's in an era of Trade Union strikes. Reminded me of Billy Elliot in some ways. It's funny, with strong lead characters, and I enjoyed it. This was a freebie, but I'd not be upset if I'd paid to see it. However if you're not into politics or women's rights/industrial stuff you might get a bit bored. Does focus on the human cost of strike action too, but doesn't dwell too heavily on the bad side of things. Some laugh out loud moments too and lots of women in bras ;)

Has some famous faces - Trigger from Only Fools, Bob Hoskins.

Phantom of the Opera

Beautifully presented big screen translation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical.

I enjoy this one, though I haven't seen it since I caught its theatrical release 6 years ago. Beautifully set, sung, danced and acted, a solid performance from all the characters involved. Suitably over the top as befits the fairly 2D characters from the musical but not cringingly so, and not in any way that detracts from it.

Gerard Butler does once again struggle to lose his Scottish accent as the Phantom, and Emmy Rossum gives very good credit to her classical training as Christine.

8/10 -2 mainly for the occasional plot quirks that don't make much sense.

8/10 I've watched this before and enjoyed it as a film in its own right despite being told that I'd never understand it or enjoy it unless I'd seen Firefly first but recently I've watched Firefly and felt like seeing if it made a difference - it does although the enjoyment was as much in noticing how they'd linked it together as for the storyline itself. If I ever find the person who cancelled Firefly in the first place though we're going to be having some serious words about recognising what is a good TV show and what isn't...

As a side note why is it every time that someone raves about the women in Firefly/Serenity it's Summer Glau and Jewel Staite? Don't get me wrong they're both pretty and I can see the attraction but really Morena Baccarin and Gina Torres are much sexier.

Modern Times - Bluray

One of Chaplin's more well known films, but not really one of my favourites. It's too much like a series of short films with a vague storyline throughout to hold them together. However, it does show Chaplin at pretty much his peak of physical abilities.

It was originally intended to be the first of the talkies with the Tramp, but it was decided that the Tramp was much less appealing if he spoke, so there are lines, but spoken by more minor characters.

I own the complete Chaplin collection on DVD, but the work they've done for the bluray is astonishing. The picture quality is astonishly good. The DTS-HD audio track matches thisl. The restoration work done has made it look and sound pretty much as new. Frankly amazing given that quite often silent movie prints were disposed of by heating/burning to get the silver nitrate out and those that survived were left to rot in vaults.

Still awesome. Not as much picture improvement as I was expecting over the DVD.
That's interesting. My DVD version is a two sided disk, so it's either not as compressed as usual or it's a single layer DVD. I wouldn't know which.

Das Boot is a longer film and it's all on one side.

The original DVD edition of Goodfellas was a flipper - instead of doing a dual layer disc they stuck it across multiple sides - also encoded poorly.

Next edition was the SE - no longer a flipper and also was encoded with a better bitrate and more importantly Anamorphic format. Included 2 commentaries and also had a second disc with extra guff on.

Bluray is a HD version of the SE as far as I can tell. But I was expecting a much greater change.

As soon as the SE came out I bought it. I was fed up of flipper discs. I do still have a few - but they tend to be dual layer flippers so 18gb discs.

8/10 First time I've ever watched it, I think the running time put me off watching it as much as anything else as I've meant to watch it for ages but the idea of devoting 2 and 3/4 hours to it wasn't quite appealing enough. Still I finally got round to it tonight and it's a great film with some brilliant performances, it really does come alive when Pacino and De Niro are in the coffee shop.

Knew very little about this before watching it - other than the cast and it was about a homeless guy who played Beethoven.

I was let down by the film though. Cast were excellent, but the script let them down. The flashbacks killed a lot of the mood for me. It doesn't seem to know what sort of film it wants to be. Documentary, inspirational film or a sad look at mental illness... Shame.

Let Me In - 9/10

I didn't know if I was going to enjoy this, but we went to a preview last night and I really did. Thought it was great.

It's a remake of a Swedish film called Let the Right One Inand although I haven't seen the original yet, we have it to watch so I may be able to compare soon.

It centres around Owen, bullied 12-year-old boy who develops a friendship with an odd little girl who moves into the next door apartment in Los Alamos in New Mexico in the early 1980s. Owen's Mom and Dad are split and his mom is always seen with a wine glass nearby or arguing with his Dad on the phone. He doesn't have much, and when the little girl moves in next door, they bump into each other in the small communal play area in the courtyard outside their building. She always has bare feet.

The pair strike up a friendship and the story moves on from there.

It's a very odd movie because to be honest, the thought of a human/vampire pre-teen love story wouldn't make me go and see it, but it's important to make the distinction that while this movie is about kids, it's very definitely not for kids.

The direction is classic Hammer. It manages to get that eerie, evocative 70's/early 80's style absolutely bang on, without the laughable (sorry, I love hammer, but a lot of it is so bad it's good!) elements. It reminded me of Carrie in a lot of ways, especially the bits where I wanted to rip my own hair out because I couldn't help him from the bullies. Owen reminds me a lot of the little chap in about a boy -has huge lips and eyes and looks terrified most of the time. The acting from the two young leads is superb, just brilliant. I love them both! Even the bullies are great little actors (the lead bully is David Shepherd from Lost!)

The gory bits are gory, but they're relevant and the film isn't defined by them. To say that, I mean it's not a SAW or a gore-fest. There are bits when the audience squealed and looked away, but laughed with nerves after because it was that classic kind of Hammer gore - lots of blood and people thrashing about and people watching through their hands but never over the top enough to feel uncomfortable. There's also bits where you're not quite sure what's going to happen, some bits that feel quite 'wrong' but that are explained when events unfold further through the movie.

I don't know if it's because I remember being scared by the Hammer movies when I was too young to be cynical, but it really made me squirm at times, It's something in the way it's made, in the direction I think. Put it this way, it's certainly not a Twilight & I think a lot of people (teens) going to see it because they think it is will be disappointed. This isn't a tale of teenage angst & sparkly, clean-faced vampires. So, take bad reviews at face value - watch the trailers and make your own mind up. I'd say go and see it on Oct 31st ;)

Also, there's a great BD spotting moment where they go into a room and 'TAK' is scrawled across the walls :D

The Hurt Locker

An intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. James behaves as if he's indifferent to death. As the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos, and James' true character reveals itself in a way that will change each man forever.

Had this for a while and finally got around to watching it. Really like the style it was filmed in with a kind of gritty look to some of the scenes. Some good character development through the film as you start to see a different side to people and why they act the way they do. A good level of realism without needing to see too much graphic detail just for the sake of it.

Really good watch without being too over the top.

RED: 8/10

Enjoyed it, but then Bruce Willis is in it (looking more like Homer Simpson every time I see him). Bones from Star Trek is in it too, and it's good to see him in a different role.

Based on the cult D.C. Comics graphic novels by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, RED is an action-comedy starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren.

Frank (Bruce Willis), Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich) and Victoria (Helen Mirren) used to be the CIAs top agents but the secrets they know just made them the Agencys top targets. Now framed for assassination, they must use all of their collective cunning, experience and teamwork to stay one step ahead of their deadly pursuers and stay alive. To stop the operation, the team embarks on an impossible, cross-country mission to break into the top-secret CIA headquarters, where they will uncover one of the biggest conspiracies and cover-ups in government history.

More than passable way to spend a few hours :) Much better than the other 'get all the oldie dudes together' Expendables.

Time Travel on a Budget

It's a little hard to know what to say about this film, or even quite how I feel about it, so I'll whip the summary from wikipedia:
The principal characters are Aaron (Shane Carruth) and Abe (David Sullivan), two engineers who accidentally create a device which allows an object or person to travel backward in time. The pair initially test the device by using it to cheat the stock market, but are ultimately unable to resist the temptation of using their machine to meddle with nearly every aspect of their own lives. Through their increasing recklessness, they create problems and situations and their newfound power begins to destroy their friendship.

The film was done on a shoe-string budget, just $7k, but it doesn't show at all. They didn't fall into the trap of pointless CGI which would normally be expected with Time Travel.

What you get is an interesting yarn about the consequences of time travel, causality and how two people handle the power differently.

It's staged, filmed and edited brilliantly. It is slightly confusing though. I had to watch it twice through to make sense of it, I must have missed something on my first run through. I reckon it's well worth a watch, but I honestly couldn't give you a rating out of 10, which is rather similar to my thoughts about Donnie Darko.
Some fun can be found in digging into little throwaway bits that reveal that even the timeline we're watching has been tampered with, for example at the start of the film they have a new freezer. A few scenes later it's an old freezer that they're cannibalising for parts. That slipped by unnoticed the first time through, I didn't pick up on it until the next day when I was thinking about the film. The implication being, I guess, that the old freezer was cannibalised for parts long before the film started, but then that time line was mixed up by someone

Due Date 8/10

Surprisingly good for a 'road movie', some silly bits, some bits where you think..'uhhh....ok', but on the whole, considering what it could have been with lesser actors, pretty good. RDJ is superb (and super-hot as always) playing the highly strung *just on the right side of psycho* that he does so well to complement the incredibly annoying & dim character Ethan Tremblay.

Entertaining 2 hours or so - and better than most movies of this type that I've seen. More Planes/Trains/Automobiles than Road Trip.

Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt.

Megamind (Ferrell, sounding nothing like his normal self) and Metro Man (Pitt) are sent to Earth from two different planets that are being sucked into a black hole. Metro Man lands in a large mansion where he's adopted by two well-to-do parents ("You got me a baby?","Oh yes dear, I saw it and thought of you".. "Our baby can fly!","Only the best for my darling"), and grows up using his powers to save everyone.
Megamind lands in a prison, and turns his mind to a life of crime, and naturally he and Metro Man are forever fighting, and he is forever losing or nearly, but not quite winning.

It's hard to start on the plot without providing spoilers, but Kari and I both loved this immensely. As typical with animated films, lots of jokes aimed at every level. Some subtle and some blatant, mostly all brilliant :) Well worth seeing.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

A lot of people raved about this so I thought I'd give it a bash. The story's been done to death a million times already and to be frank, by the time I'd seen only five minutes I began to get disappointed and bored.

However that aside (which usually is enough for me to completely dislike a film) it wasn't a bad 'turn off your brain' effort. This was all about how it presented itself; the references and little comic book and 80s video games' graphics were pretty good. It led to a style of shot which for me was new, in a way like when I saw Sin City for the first time.

It's worth a watch, and looks great on Blu-Ray because of these effects. However I couldn't get over the fact that the script was pretty weak. To the point I'd wondered why the pretty decent cast took the roles and why clearly a lot of money was spent on those graphics.

8/10 graphics

5.5/10 over all...

Leaves of Grass

This film stars Edward Norton as an Ivy League professor whose career is going very well. He's very happy with himself as a result of an impending promotion, until he learns that his twin brother (also played by Norton) has passed away. The rest of his family are polar opposites i.e. they're unsuccessful - in fact his twin is a drug dealer. He returns home with an eye to sort things out.

I'm a big a fan of Norton and have liked all of his films. Great actor and a fantastic voice. This one's all about him playing very different identical twins and he pulls it off well.

The story's much better than the previous film and has quite a decent plot and score. Worth watching in my opinion.

7/10

4 3 2 1

This British film charts the adventures of a few girlfriends whose stories are all intertwined. A girl has a rubbish job at a convenience store in London and one day everything kicks off as a robbery takes place and some diamonds are involved.

It's one of those films where we see one first, then the second while noting how it connects to the first, then the third etc. etc. I don't mind that style of film at all and the decent plot makes it worth a watch. It's a low budget Brit flick, so doesn't have the fancy effects or editing of Hollywood, but that shouldn't be at all enough to be off putting.

6/10

Splice

Adrian Brody and some bird play two lovers and research bio engineers who are at the front of DNA research and the creation of new animals. They one day hit the jackpot and successfully produce strange creations, but are told by their employers to stop their work and focus on more profit driven targets. Ignoring this, and after making out a bit, they go ahead and create something from human DNA.

Natalie Portman plays the part of this thing and it's always a bit weird people play odd parts but she doesn't do a bad job.

The cast is pretty solid and it's not a bad watch. But the script is pretty predictable and it's not an amazing film.

I watched Splice last night, and Natalie Portman definitely isn't in it! :p

I expected it to be a typical Hollywood horror film with a seen-it-all-before story but it surprised me by being a lot darker and psychological than I was expecting. There was always a tenseness provided by the idea that every step of the way they were doing something morally wrong, and never for the right reasons, which added a lot to the film. Suffered a bit from a more mainstream horror/slasher ending which you could see coming from a mile off, and a somewhat tedious 'twist'. 5/10 is fair, maybe worth a little more for the 'Dren' effects.

Fanboys

Geeky it may be, but this could well be one of my favourite films of the year. Laughed so much at it. Not a film for you if you've not seen or didn't like Star Wars - it's set in 1998 around a group of fanboys *and a fangirl* trying to break into Lucasfilm to steal a copy of Episode 1 before it's revealed as one of their number has cancer.

The number of cameo's in it is up there with the later View Askewniverse films - Billy Dee Williams, Ray Park, Carrie Fisher, Seth Rogen, Danny Trejo, Ethan Suplee, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes and William Shatner all appear in various roles.

George Lucas saw an early cut of the film and gave the producers access to the original sound effect library so it's now loaded with sound effects from the original trilogy.

Filled with in jokes as well, it's a total geek out. I loved it.

I can't really explain what this is about without totally giving it away, but I started watching this with no other pretext than 'it's a documentary about a guy who meets a girl on Facebook'. Sounds lame right? I thought so too and was very skeptical about how much I'd enjoy it. Luckily the person that recommended it often knows what he's talking about so I gave it a go.

By about 20-30 minutes in I was thinking 'this is a bit weird and self-involved - why would they make a documentary about this?', but gradually it becomes more ominous and, frankly, a bit scary. By the end I was seriously doubting if it was a real documentary but there's very little to suggest otherwise either in the documentary itself or anywhere online. If it is then it was very well done and entertaining, if it's not, well.... kudos to everyone involved because that would make it a modern masterpiece.

8/10... as a documentary.

6/10 I think it's been rather harshly judged on IMDB, it's not a great film by any means but I bought it knowing nothing about it and found that I quite enjoyed it. I'm not sure what people were expecting but it's a deliberately grimey film about a London of five years in the future where society has largely broken down with a moral about the futility of violence if you choose to read that into it, if you can just take it on its merits then you'll probably get on ok with it but it's not a style that everyone will like.

Just got around to watching this and thought it was simply awesome. It's one of those films that seems to suck you in and the ending, well, just great. I'm still sat here taking it all in, thinking about what happened and how it finished. Film of the year for me.

Watched it in French but with English subtitles (my French isn't up to scratch.. could have figured out enough to understand what was going on, but wouldn't have enjoyed it)

I actually don't mind the dubbed version for once as it adds a whole new layer of (unintentional) hilarity - they picked some comedy Irish accents for the voices. :D

It is a pretty good film though, it packs a fair bit into quite a short running time.

Has anyone seen The Aristocrats? Not to be confused with the Disney film of a similar name :p

It was crap!!! Maybe its because I don't 'get' that type of crass humour.

I watched the first 15mins then started doing my chores while it was on in the background, so I didn't waste my time.

The only 'good' one was the card trick one.

Rubbish.

This was brilliantly performed by Sean Penn in what I think was equal to his performance as Harvey Milk. The film is loosely based on events surrounding Samuel Byck and charts the loss of his loved ones, career and therefore sanity.

I'm going to go against the grain on this one but I've not been so disappointed in a film since the last overhyped film that I subjected myself to.

To be fair the cinematography, sound track and SFX were very, very good but that doesn't make up for a film that was easily 30 minutes too long (they could have cut 20 minutes if they didn't keep on showing that van falling off the bridge) with what I considered to be a pretty dull plot, clever for the sake of cleverness.

Worth watching for most people but I wouldn't go in expecting anything particularly ground breaking.

6/10

SALT
Trashy action/thriller where Angela Jolie pretends that her ample bosom isn't the only reason we watch her films. Action scenes are suitably action packed and the thriller scenes, well the less said about them the better. Not a bad way to waste a couple of hours but be prepared for an utterly ****e ending.

5/10

The Expendables
I knew this was going to be crap going in so I wasn't expecting much and it managed to deliver. Bad (but not in a good way) action film that tried to be a parody of itself and failed badly IMO, shame as I really wanted to like it.

3/10

The A-Team
As above I was expecting very little from this film but unlike above I loved it. Action packed, very silly and clearly doesn't take itself seriously.

7/10

The Other Guys
I'm starting to wonder if Will Ferrell turns down any film roles as this is another clanger that he's recently appeared in, it feels very strange after some of the true classics he has appeared in, not to mention staring in and Producing stuff like Eastbound and Down.

Anyways, I was so bored by this film that I switched off halfway through and trust me that takes some doing :(

9/10 I'm not even sure if there's much point in doing a review, I hadn't seen it for a while and just wanted to remind myself how good it was/is. I'd imagine pretty much everyone here has seen it by now but if you haven't then it's well worth the time doing so. It's not as taut as Reservoir Dogs perhaps but it's much better than some of his later films in terms of sharpness where he seems to have forgotten to edit anything much out.

Burlesque!

If you're going to see it as a dance movie which is like an elongated pop video, total eyecandy and with some good songs you won't be disappointed. Just don't expect anything more and you'll be fine!

I laughed out loud a few times (there's a salute to Cabaret's Two Ladies) and was a nice little film which I will be buying, although I will be fast forwarding past Cher's 'I am a strong woman' solo which just seemed totally plonked in there for no reason, plus CA's solo - if I'd paid for a Burlesque show and CA had been on stage wailing about lurve in a green dress I'd have asked for my money back!

Fun escapism! 8/10(for the music and sparkliness mainly!)

Predators

Yet another film containing Predators where we learn nothing of who they really are, what their motives are beyond trying to become better killers, or what their back-story is.

A bunch of human 'predators' (various killers, either professional/military or criminal) are dumped on an alien planet (we never find out where, or why, or if this is the Predator home planet or what) and are basically hunted for training purposes.

As we have little sympathy for these completely unknown characters aside from empathising with their desire to not be there, and there's no development to look forward to with the overall story of the Predators, ultimately the film is pointless. Gone are the days where it was pretty much impossible to kill or hide from a Predator because they were so elusive and able to find their prey so easily, now it seems it's possible to crash around a forest firing relatively antiquated guns with little consequence and just dodge their laser-targeting shoulder cannons should you be attacked. Oh, and never mind that you've been dropped in the middle of nowhere with one gun, you'll not run out of ammo in a hurry, even if you're a Yakuza with a pistol.

Decent action, with a few nods to the original, but barely worth watching beyond that. Whoever decided that a decent scene in this movie would include a death-row prisoner with no apparent fighting skills jumping on the back of a Predator with a shiv whilst shouting "Die you space-faggot!!!" should be shot at with a laser-targeting shoulder cannon... avoiding it by jumping over a log.

I thought this was brilliant, just the right mix of dark comedy with slapstick right from the getgo, I thought the only good thing was going to be the Minions but the main character is really endering and the whole thing isn't overplayed. Not hot, not cold, just right :)

The Sorcerers Apprentice

I didn't expect much from this and I wasn't disapointed although I wasn't as disapointed as I could have been. despite my better judgement I actually like the work of Nic Cage and he plays his part well. This is typical Disney fare and a bit formulaic but Alfred Molina does a good job and the effects are good without being overblown. It's a bit like the Lightning Thief but not so sucky.

SPOILERS

I've finally gotten round to seeing this but wasn't that enthusiastic about a film with Jesse Eisenberg or about Facebook. Zombieland and Adventure Land were good but I didn't quite fancy another piney performance from him. Fair play though, he's completely different in this and pulls off a great performance.

However being that Facebook is what it is and most of us like computers here, I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking he was asked to add quite a lot of stereotypical 'geek' into his performance and sometimes the portrayal of his character was pretty cringe-worthy. He was either socially awkward or not, but it was good enough such that the final line of the film was pretty apt: "You're not an asshole, Mark. You're just trying so hard to be."

Edit - both Winklevoss actors were played by one guy.

The Air I Breathe

An old Chinese notion said that human emotion bubbles down to happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love. The four emotions are four main characters, Whitaker, Brendon Frasier, Sarah Michelle Geller and Kevin Bacon and through them we get four corresponding stories. With such a strong cast, along with e.g. Andy Garcia it's done pretty well.

I've always had a soft spot for films that have a number of stories which intertwine and come together at the end. Therefore I'm a little bit biased, but it's far better than what a lot of reviewers thought made it out to be, and I'm not sure why there was little love for this.

I missed this when it first came out but it's worth catching if given the opportunity.

Starring Casey Affleck who is a MUCH better actor than his brother, this is a thriller about a 3 year old girl who disappears from her home in Boston. Morgan Freeman & Ed Harris also make an appearance. I really enjoyed this movie, it isnt the normal 'run of the mill' story but by saying any more about the structure, I'll give too much away. So suffice to say, it's very good, despite the fact that in some bits, the accents got a bit too thick & strong for me to understand & I had to rewind it!

Quantum Of Solace

Starring Daniel Craig Olga Kurylenko Mathieu Amalric Judy Dench
Bond no. 22

3/10 I thought I'd watch this to see if it was as bad as I first remembered it to be, it is and it isn't. It's not a terrible film on its own merits (i.e. as a generic action film) but it's a terrible Bond film - the title is nonsense, the title song is crap (I don't particularly like the White Stripes anyway though) and it felt like almost any action hero could have been substituted with no difference. However the biggest problem is it broke a cardinal rule of Bond films - they should all be self-contained films with no storyline passing directly through, characters can continue by all means but the thread of the story never does. If it wasn't for the Bond name it's a solid enough film and probably gets a 6/10 but as it does try to trade off the name it scores as above because it's just not a Bond.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio Joseph Gordon-Levitt Ellen Page Tom Hardy
Thriller

8/10 I'm not sure if it was all the press around this and that I already knew some of the storyline but I watched it and enjoyed it without being overly moved by the whole thing. It was nice, it was kinda clever and well filmed but I found I'd guessed a good number of the 'twists' (or maybe I'd been told them) well before their denouement. I'd also say it was a bit too long, there's very few films that I think merit more than 2 hours of my life and good though this was I'm not convinced it was one of them.

I only got around to watching this recently (the first Bond film since Goldeneye I didn't go to the cinema to see!). I wasn't that impressed but I did note that it had a VERY "Bourne" feel to the camera work, most noticeable during action scenes. Watch the last Bourne film and compare. The Kings Speech

Yeah, not bad actually. Quite an interesting moment in time as well, with the abdication of Edward VIII and so on. Firth and Rush are excellent together, and there's a good supporting cast with Timothy Spall, Derek Jacobi and Helena Bonham Carter. The good thing for me was that, while this film is mainly about serious topics, such as duty, family relationships, honour and so on, there are plenty of genuinely laugh out loud moments to break up the serious tone.

Should it win an Oscar or two? Sure, why not? It's a better film than a lot of stuff out there, with some serious acting and a great script. I'd certainly recommend a watch, even to those who think "Meh, film about some bloke with a stammer... sounds boring!". I thought that, and was pleasantly surprised.

Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning et. al.

There are people with super powers in the world, and government agencies all around the world who are trying to use them to create super armies. In the US's case it's called Division.
Kira (Camille Belle), a powerful psychic capable of pushing thoughts onto others, is on the run from Division after having been injected by their experimental drug (that usually kills super-powered people when it's supposed to enhance them). Nick (Chris) is her boyfriend, a Mover (telekinetic), and it's up to him to protect the girl and Cassie (Dakota), a Watcher (precognition).

I was expecting super-hero fluff, with thin plots. The trailer for it really does a crap job of showing the film for what it really is, something a lot deeper. It's not just a bunch of heroes and villains duking it out with their superpowers, and it's not just an action film. But it is both too.

It's hard to talk about the film without spoiling it, but in my opinion it's well worth a watch.

The Tortured Details 2010

6PmEdQB1vYI

The perfect marriage of Craig (Jesse Metcalfe - Desperate Housewives) and Elise Landry (Erika Christensen - Six Degrees, Flight Plan) is suddenly shattered when their young son is abducted and murdered. When the killer (Bill Moseley - Halloween, The Devil's Rejects) is brought to trial, he manages to plea bargain his way to a lighter sentence. Utterly outraged by this miscarriage of justice, the grieving parents decide to take matters into their own hands.

They capture the murderer, imprison him and subject him to the same monstrous acts he perpetrated upon their defenseless child. The unforeseen consequences, however, challenge their ideas of vengeance, justice and the true nature of evil.

The Invention of Lying

I like Mr Ricky so figured I had a good chance with this one! I'm sure you all know the synopsis of it as such but it's based on a chap who is regarded as a bit of a saddo who lives in a society where no one has ever been able to lie... and then one day he miraculously gains the ability to do so.

If you take it at face value it's an okay film. I did laugh a couple of times out loud - particularly at the beginning - but really I just kind of switched off. In fact, I watched it over two nights, I wasn't even that fussed over it and only watched the second half whilst waiting for a friend to turn up.

I know what it was getting at and all films have flaws but a more suitable title would have been "The Invention of Lying and Having the Ability to Not Have Tourettes and State The Obvious All the Time"

Disappointed.

3.5/10

The Machinist

Christian Bale plays an INCREDIBLY scarily stick thin chap who works in a factory as a machinist (funnily enough ;)) and is suffering from insomnia.

I'm not quite sure on this film. I think I watched it through morbid fascination on how utterly skinny Christian Bale was. To me it seemed kind of obvious what was going on and I don't think it was trying to be clever and hide it... or may be it was? I don't know. This is the problem... I'm not sure what I was supposed to think through out the film.

It's not confusing... just... I didn't know if I should kind of see where it was heading or not.

It's interesting. I would say a poor comparable to Memento if I'm honest. Great acting as always though and brilliant set design throughout if you're into that kinda thing. Wouldn't watch it again, felt it was quite slow.

5/10

The Fighter

Mark Walberg and Christian Bale in this one. Kind of a modernised Rocky style film. Boxer and Brother help train up to fight, Brother is an ex fighter with a nasty addiction. Apparently based on a true story - would be interested to read up on who it was all about (excuse my nativity in boxing if it's someone well known!)

Great acting, superb characters, fantastic sets, sturdy plot. It is very stereotypical fighter film, but it's probably one of the better ones I've seen!

Thoroughly enjoyed, made me laugh a fair few times too and had me saying a few "oooo"s and "aaaaaaahooowach"s noises whilst watching fight scenes!

Seth Rogan as a process server who along with his marijuana dealer manage to get tangled up in a murder.

Laughed out loud in a lot of places! Comedy deaths galore! Really nice little film and only £3 in Tesco! Bargain!

Disappointed.

The beginning 10 minutes of that film were the most excruciating minutes of my life, thanks to Leo deciding that it sounded like a suitable film for me to watch with my MOTHER and GRANDMOTHER.

Right - read this people - it may save you a few hours of your life:

Never Let Me Go.

Let it go.

Entirely.

Drama film, based on a boarding school and the growing up of 3 kids.

Pretend it never existed because to be honest, it barely does exist. You can figure out everything instantly and nothing happens.

For any Keira Knightley fans out there, she nearly made me call out "DIE ALREADY!" in the middle of the film. Worst acting in the universe. It was cringe worthy.

The most reaction it evoked from me was fear. But that's because of my phobia of dolls. Marie had to tell me when it had gone out of shot on the screen.

I just... I sat there thinking "Really.... really am I watching this?". Unmoving, pointless, tiring, bland, poor acting, wet. Everyone around us was echoing my thoughts in the cinema. I felt no connection to any of the characters and just didn't get it.

Best summary in one word: Drivel.

Wasnt what I epxected at all, it seemed advertised a rom-com, but it was depressing! Plus story was dire, character development was crap. It seemed huge chunks of the relationship forming were missing. The "doctor" was made out to be a simpleton, and showed little hesitation in breaking the doctor / patient boundary. In fact it made him seem like a complete wet sponge. AVOID, especially if you are feeling down! Most entertaining thing was the folk of Redruth I was forced to share a cinema with ;)

Devil 2010
C7l3nzjHYTg
From an idea by M. Night Shyamalan (THE SIXTH SENSE) and director John Erick Dowdle (QUARANTINE) comes the ultimate in supernatural horror; DEVIL. The film concerns a group that becomes stranded in a lift after it breaks down. Frightened by the uncertainty of their predicament, and tempers frayed by their claustrophobia-inducing surroundings, the situation looks like it cannot get any worse when the members of the group discover that one of them is the devil himself, but which of them is it?

Thought this was a really good afternoon filler watch. Some nice ideas and just flows nicely.

Buried Details 2010
zCce1JvD2vk
Paul Conroy is not ready to die. But when he wakes up 6 feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival. Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited. Poor reception, a rapidly draining battery, and a dwindling oxygen supply become his worst enemies in a tightly confined race against time- fighting panic, despair and delirium, Paul has only 90 minutes to be rescued before his worst nightmare comes true.

7/10
What can I say he's stuck in a coffin, some good emotions and responses and for once a decent ending.

12 Angry Men (1957)

Henry Fonda
Lee J. Cobb
Jack Klugman (Quincy ME!)
et. al.

10/10

I can't remember where I heard about 12 Angry Men. It was certainly some point in the last year anyway, and it piqued my curiosity.

The film opens in court with the Judge providing instructions to the Jury before they go to deliberate on a murder case, regarding whether a young boy (18) from the slums had murdered his father. If they all found guilty he would be executed by electric chair.
Of the 12 very different men, only Juror 8 (Henry Fonda) expressed any doubts. Almost the rest of the film is spent in just one emotionally charged jury room (apart from one quick scene in the bathroom).

It's an absolutely fascinating drama, and Kari and I were both getting quite involved in the plot. I couldn't sit still for it, I kept having to get up and start pacing, as right from the start it became clear that maybe things aren't quite so cut and dried.

Loved the film, great acting all around, the kind of quality that's increasingly lacking in Hollywood films, all of them came from theatrical and character acting backgrounds, and it shows.

What was amusing to hear was the Jurors talking about kids and lack of respect 'these days'. '57 was not long after my parents were born, and I swear the language of their generation about mine is almost word for word the same, and I hear (and think) the same things about the next generation I see. Nothing ever really changes, just the person wearing the rose tinted glasses. ;)

12 Angry Men (1957)

Probably one of the greatest films that will ever be made, I can't give it 10/10 for reasons explained earlier in the thread but I can't think of another film that I rate more highly.

The only films I've watched recently I'm pretty sure I've already reviewed such as Sherlock Holmes or District 13: Ultimatum.

True Grit

Having read the book, and watched the original (sorry, but I feel it's a just another vehicle for John Wayne to do his 'John Wayne' act in), I was really rather surprised by this film. It was soft in the right places, harsh in others, and had the right amount of humour sprinkled in. Jeff Bridges was well cast, if a little old (based on the book). Matt Damon was a little flat (but that's Matt Damon). However, I'd happily watch this film again purely to enjoy Hailee Steinfeld's role. She really stole the film and bounced off the other characters brilliantly. I really hope she wins an award for this.

It's a brilliant western, dragged into modern cinema. There is more 'realism' compared to past films, yet it's still sprinkled with dark humour and 'western myth'. The middle of the film seemed a little disjointed, however the ending rewards you.

9/10

P.S. I hate John Wayne.

Zomg I have so many films I need to watch!! Devil and Buried look good (Buried will FREAK ME OUT... I was VERY aware of my breathing watching that clip!) And then 12 angry men and and True Grit and Paul.

Nuts. I need more time!

Saw Black Swan last night. Superb. Acting was tremendous. A few things really struck a chord with me which freaked me out. Brilliant! And a few people have said to me they're a bit confused why the rudey scenes are put in there and they feel they're pointless... but I thought the contrary. It really added to the film!

Fab fab fab :)

West is West

Wasn't really sure about this. East is East was on the box the other day and I really enjoyed it as I hadn't seen it for ages. So, slightly hungover and looking for something to do today we went to see WiW.

I expected a very similar film to the first, but, just like the cast, it has grown up a bit. Not so many funny moments, and a lot more focussed on the characters. I found myself enjoying it immensely.

Frozen

I had low expectations for this, and they were met.

Three people get trapped on a ski lift in sub-zero temperatures on a Sunday evening and have to decide how to get off it because the runs are only open at weekends of course.

Slightly better dialogue than your average Final Destination film but it felt a little bit like that sort of movie from the start. Fairly tense throughout, and some truly gruesome parts made worse by it feeling more real than, say, a SAW film, which depends more on shock or 'cartoonish' goriness.

At one point I started to laugh because it just all starts to get a bit too outlandish, and I often found myself saying 'Why would you do that when you could just as easily do this?'. Some of the decisions they make boggle the mind and maybe I'm looking at it from a far too sensible point of view, but if you traverse a steel cable that cuts through your gloves and into your hands and you have a chance to stop halfway, why would you not remove the gloves and put them on backwards on the opposite hands before carrying on? Or use your socks/jacket sleeves/anything other than your bare, uncovered, already bloodied hands? Just little things like that that made it all too frustrating.

Biggest laugh was from the point where they blag the ski passes and finally get on the lift; some heinous rock music suddenly started and I sang along going 'SKI LIFT MUSIC! SKI LIFT MUSIC! WE GOT SOME PASSES FROM THE DUDE AT THE BOTTOM!' etc.

The laugh was from my housemate.

I know this has been rated before but... I don't get it?! Can someone explain it's awesomeness to me? I've heard so many people rave about it but I was a bit like "right.. what am I watching, is this a comedy? Is it a documentary? Who is this annoying South African bloke? What happened in the beginning? Why are these intellectual beings... not intellectual?!"

Good concept... but it just collapsed on structure.

Please someone explain to me if I'm missing the point entirely?!
