I think you are probably best reading the wikipedia entry for it, especially the themes section :)
I believe the clue is its setting in South Africa ;)

The south African man saying the f word has me in stitches every time.
Hahaha! I get why he's South African... I just don't get *him*! His character! Just... weird!
I shall go forth and read wiki!
Am off to see Rango 3D shortly. Doing well for freebies at the moment, so far this month I have seen (well, February/March)
Gnomeo & Juliet 3D
I am Number 4
Rango 3D (tonight)
Fair Game (next week)
Limitless (week after).
Can't complain!
Hahaha! I get why he's South African... I just don't get *him*! His character! Just... weird!
This is partly why I gave a final score of 10/10 for the film - Wikus is a very different character from any I've ever seen before. He seems quite jobsworthy and nerdy to begin with; the creepy guy in the office who only has responsibility because of his personal connections to the higher-ups. His views on the aliens don't appear to differ all that much from the general populous and if the mirror of apartheid were knocked down his views and comments would probably be considered racist. He comes across as being of average intelligence also.
That said, we root for him in the film as his dilemma becomes more and more serious. Why? It's an ambivalence I can't quite shake. He has a certain humanity to him but is very selfish on the whole, even towards the end of the film.
It's a bit of a clichéd remark, but I found Wikus himself to be quite alien in so much as he doesn't appear to fit... anywhere.
Briliant film, brilliant characterisation.
I am number 4
Was expecting this to be a bit dire, but was very plesantly surprised! Effects were very well rendered and believable. The only part i didnt enjoy was the lead guy was too buff and made me feel very jealous. Grrrrrr

Waiting for the sequels!

But the other girl in it made up for it no doubt ;)
He was so fit...and born in 1990 *shame*
I am Number 4
Limitless (week after).
I want to see these two :)
Do you know when Limitless is out? Despite the brilliant marketing for it I didn't have time/wasn't easy to see the date :p

I genuinely didn't empathise with him at all. Not in the slightest! I didn't route for him or anything during the film! I felt he was annoying and unrealistic... I couldn't establish a connection even though I really wanted too! The only character I thought "aww, I like this dude" was the kid prawn. That was about it!
I think the film completely missed the point with me!
This... is what annoyed me most:
The dudey and prawn breaking into MNU. The dude blatantly had absolutely no physical skills what-so-ever and despite being in a great deal of knowledge about prawns and their weaponary and things... his common sense and intelligence was greatly lacking. Therefore, how could HE devise a plan to break into MNU and get back the fluid when there's a mass hunt for him going on throughout the world and only him and one prawn versus an army of people?
Now, putting aside my feelings for him being completely daft as a brush, if it was possible for him to be able to fight with such force and success then how the devil had the other prawns being ruled by a gang of humans with standard guns? Okay, there's a supply of cat food, but their guns and strength versus humans is far more superior... I don't understand why they were so frightened of humans and so willingly drawn to be ruled by them? Obviously they're out numbered but then....
....In such a large community of prawns, why did they all seem just idiotic? These beings have technology that far exceeds ours and yet all they were depicted doing was being volatile and unintelligent minus the one prawn we follow during the film.
It just made no sense. I understand more now the whole who the prawns are supposed to depict now after reading wiki, but it's just so far fetched for me... so many flaws and holes.
Perhaps I was reading too much into it. I think I was expecting more which doesn't help in the broad scheme of things!
Disappointed!

Leon - Special Edition, on Blu ray.
Still one of the best films I've ever seen. Simply awesome all the way through, and the extra scenes tie the whole film together better than the original.
10/10
True Grit
Pretty good, and absolutely hilarious in places (especially where he chucks the kids off the porch - hysterics), and the lead girl was magnificent; best child performance I've seen in years. The only thing that kind of spoilt it was the very, very end which gave little satisfaction to a decent story.
7/10
Seeing True Grit this week - excited to say the least :D
I had free tickets to see this but didn't go - didn't fancy it.
I watched D9 at the weekend -
didn't like Wikus either until the very end shot! :D

Despicable Me - 8/10 :)
Just about to watch Fair Game!
My favourite film of all time. I might even watch it again tonight... it makes me laugh so hard!
Either that oooorr Push or Atonement or Marley and Me.
Very tempted by Marley and Me but I just know I will be in tears... I knows it! And I am in a stupendously happy mood!
See thing is... do I watch it when I'm stupendously happy knowing I won't end up being utterly miserable after or watch it when I'm a bit sad and risk feeling completely depressed after?! Hahaha!
Watched Get Him to the Greek the other night.
A film of two extremes. Some bits I thought "purile nonsense - this isnt funny" then 5 minutes later im all but wetting myself.
Hard to judge, but overall I felt a little let down.
7/10
The King's Speech
6/10
I just didn't like it that much, certainly not one for DVD collection and probably not something I'd watch on the TV again. Maybe it was the hype.
Fair Game 6.5/10 - more if you're into political/conspiracy stuff. Very much like a long episode of 24.
Whenever I see the title Fair Game I can only ever think of the 90s crapfest starring Cindy Crawford and one of the Baldwin brothers.
I watched Marley and Me...
Plot line is basic about a married couple and their life and obviously their dog, Marley.
Didn't really enjoy the film as such (became bored about half way through and was reading my Focus magazine and half concentrating on the screen) but the last 10mins...
I am Miss Snotfest.
If you've ever owned a dog whom you've loved greatly... it will break your heart! Even if you don't get a connection with Marley... nothing like my doggies in the past.
Heart breaker!
Ermm overall though?
4/10
Not my kinda thing
I thought it was a rubbish film (plotline/actingwise).
I've never had a dog so I didn't have a snot moment either.

Well this is it... I think the film would only affect those who have had or have dogs.
Other than that... bored!
I've never watched it because the book was wonderful and I don't want it to spoil the memory of it!
No and it contains two of the most annoying people in the movie world trying to act as a COUPLE!!!
There was NO chemistry!

Hahaha Mei you're totally right!
I can never stop staring at Owen Wilsons nose. His nose has a kind of hypnotic affect on me. I don't really know what he's said as I've been watching his nose.
It's the same as one of my managers and his nostril hair. You should see it. I don't know how he breathes. It's amazing. But. I don't hear what he says as all I can think is "NOSTRIL HAIR my GOD LOOK AT IT! I wonder if he gets snot? Does it make his nose more efficient? how far does it go being that thick?! Maybe he has a hairy throat! HA!"... and then I just have to agree with him despite not knowing what he's said.
Weird.
Hahahaha! I totally get the Owen Wilson nose thing too!
It looks like a broken willy.

Red Rose - Stephen King. Some freaky **** this was with stuff creeping up behind me. :( Good story though but it does fade towards the end. Well worth a watch though if you have a good few hours to kill & want to get goose bumps & jump out ya skin. :D
Gran Tourino - Clint Eastwood. I watched this a while back but have since bought a copy & I suggest anybody that hasn't seen it to do so as it's more than a film it's a work of art.
I'll be back as I've borrowed about 15 films off mates to test drive me new set up with. ;D

Yeah Rango was funny. Bit too much story not enough payoff for me, but funny. And the eyes! the detail was amazing!,
Now, Limitless.
In a word - Fabulous! Very different, very smart, very well done. This movie is going to be synonymous with Cooper's name - he IS the film, and it's really going to propel him into being *the* hottest property around! I loved it - 9.5/10.
The Fly

The Fly
Prepare yourself to witness a fusion of man and insect that has to be experienced to be believed! Dr Seth Brundle plays fast and loose with the laws of nature. Experimenting with "live" matter transmission. The day comes to test the ultimate guinea pig... himself! But that's the day the fly gets into the works and his DNA, genes and molecules are interwoven with that of the insect. Brundle watches helplessly as he is transformed step by step into a living, grotesque mutant - incredibly agile, super strong and driven by insane appetites he cannot control.
6/10

Yeah Rango was funny. Bit too much story not enough payoff for me, but funny. And the eyes! the detail was amazing!,
The detail is indeed amazing. I thought the "stagecoach" part was amazing in the way they had replicated "traditional" camera angles and so on. They had really thought about how a western should look. It was all visualy sumptuous. However, the laughs were few and far between for me and at times it did seem to drag on a bit. Also, the core of the story was pretty predictable (although I suppose it was meant to be, in a way) while the hooks were... well... somewhat random, to say the least...
In hindsight, I think this film should not be viewed in the same stable as Toy Story or Shrek. It's not really a comedic romp through an alternate world, it's really just a lighthearted homage to the westerns and should really be judged on its visuals, voice acting and the occasional nod to those films that inspired it.
Love the old one, makes me laugh!
'Heeeeeeyyyyyyyllllllllllllppppp mmmmmmeeeeeeeeeee! Heeeeeeeyyyyyylllllllllllp mmmmeeeeeeee!'

Just got back in from seeing Battle : Los Angeles
****ing ****. I'll do a better review in the morning.
Battle: Los Angeles
Well, what can I say? This film takes itself FAR too seriously. I was expecting a bit of fun like Starship Troopers or Independence Day, a good action sci-fi flick with a bit of humour and a brilliant feel good film of earth conquering the alien enemy. Instead we got endless amount of close-ups of gritty sweaty faces with angry stares. Endless amounts of irritating real hardcore military drumming music (mainly used in the close-ups of gritty sweaty faces with angry stares) and endless amonts of "god damn it", "hooooahhh" and other cheesey one liners that had no place in this film. Either make it serious or make it cheesey and fun....don't do a half way house and expect it to work. My mate Tubbs just stood up at the end and said "that was dog ****". I think he summed it up well.
It's a shame though, because it could have been a really good and different type of film, if they had just cut some of the crap. But it totally ruined it for me.

Martial arts film
8/10 It's not the only film I've watched recently but it is one of the few that I've felt is worth mentioning or that I've not watched before. It's a semi-biographical film loosely based on Yip Man, the first master to teach Wing Chun openly. It's probably obvious by now that I've got a bit of a liking for martial arts films almost irrespective of their qualities but this one actually has a bit of a storyline, dubious historical accuracy perhaps but the acting is solid for the most part, the martial arts are well executed and it's entertaining.

Scientists have developed technology that allows a person to be relive the world of the last 8 minutes of someones life, over and over again, nicknamed "The Source Code". This isn't a case of just living the same events over and over, he can actually move around and experience the world as it was, right there and then, and the world reacts appropriately.
A bomb explodes on a train on the outskirts of Chicago, a calling card from a bomber threatening to blow up a nuclear device downtown. Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) is sent in to relive the final 8 minutes courtesy of a brain recovered from the wreckage, being killed by the bomb over and over again until he can track down and identify the bomber.
It's well written, well acted, smart and engrossing film. Director Duncan Jones (Moon) shines again, this time with the advantage of a Hollywood budget. Michelle Monaghan is a thoroughly enchanting romantic lead, even if it's hard to build up much romance when she resets every 8 minutes or so.
I'd say it's well worth the watch, and on big screen if possible.
It did lead to Kari and I watching Groundhog Day that evening ;D

Film about people with super hero powers. Poor POOR film directing and just general camera work. Very very amateur feeling to it and look. Imagine the series Heroes... and then minus Hadyn Panitierre (omgee I just googled her to check spelling of name and have fallen back in lub.) and anything awesome... and you've got Push.

Gran Torino
Starring Clint Eastwood Christopher Carley Bee Vang Ahney Her
Drama
9/10 Wow. This is a brilliant film, I'd heard the hype and that tends to worry me a bit about films so I'd quite deliberately left watching it for a long time. Clint Eastwood is great as an irascible Korean War veteran who almost despite himself finds that he likes and wants to protect his neighbours - there's a message of redemption and not looking just at face value in there but even if you just watch it as an engrossing story it's fantastic. I don't think there's a bad performance from any of the cast.
I don't think I can add anything to that! Top notch film :)

Red Riding Hood
Storyline is of a little village which has been haunted by a werewolf over two generations. The focal point of the story is around Red Riding Hood who is caught up in a love triangle.
Directed and what by the Twilight lady... so really should have expected as much as I did. All in all... it was a let down. Such a shame as, like so many films I seem to stumble across lately, it had so so much potential. Zomg. If Tim Burton got his mitts on it this film would have been epic.
The only thing I can say I was impressed by was the werewolf. I haven't seen that many well done werewolves and this wasn't too shabby.
Poor scripting... bad BAD acting (particularly by some of the girl actors in the film. Honestly, utterly static and emotionless). Very obvious story line if you're switched on due to poor scripting/directing. So much potential, such a shame.
Funniest part of the whole film: some dude in the front row got up to... I presume go for a wazza. This was just after it is kind of revealed who the werewolf is. As he crept out of the cinema though, he did it in an over exaggerated Scooby Doo style walk. I absolutely killed myself laughing - it was like he was all "Uh oh... they've cauuught mee oooout!"
Ahahah! Brilliant!

Plot line:
Mexico has an infected area of alien life form which has been bordered off to prevent further spread of the creatures. Caught up on the wrong side of the fence is a journalist/photographer who has been requested by his boss to escort his daughter back home through the infected zone to the American border.
Thoroughly enjoyable film! Mainly focuses on the two persons relationship and how it develops throughout their journey. Do not expect anything like District 9, this is more of a drama/slow moving sci fi than anything.
Thought both the characters were well developed and brilliantly casted. Just a really good film. Was half expecting something silly with a title of monsters or something cloverfield... but it's nothing alike!

The Mist
Based on the Stephen King novel - a thick mist engulfs a small town. Hidden within are blood thirsty creatures... trapping a group of shoppers in a supermarket, leaving them battling to stay alive. Weird psycho religious nuts, barmyness and ass kicking grannies included.
All in all? Candyfloss film. Not scary, kinda predictable... but edible. If you like thinking about how you would get out of weird situations (ie zombie invasions) and what actions you'd take, will probably be an mindless film you'd happily watch if bored. Only thing I will say is the ending is typically Stephen King and it makes the film!

Spanish Film - English Subtitles.
Plot: Film crew hang out with a fire brigade for a shift. Shortly into the night they're called to an apartment block where they discover an insane crazy bloodied granny of doom. Upon contact with said nutcase, the film crew, fire persons and remainder of the apartment block are quarantined with no real explanation and left to deal with walking bitey scary om nom people.
I'd seen it before but needed to refresh my mind to then watch rec 2 (not got round to this yet). Zombie/infection film... I thought pretty scary - particularly the last 10mins! Enhanced by camera held filming and part improv with the actors, just a generally good film. Some silly decisions... why would you approach a blood curdling being (especially if they're small and psycho looking) when you've just seen another biting someones face off and know it's all infectious?! It's like thinking licking the industrial shredder at work would be a smart way to get rid of a furry tongue. Stoopid.
Anyway, all in all I think good if you're into scary mary stuff and don't mind subtitles! Looking forward to rec 2!

Closing the ring
Directed by Richard Attenborough and with a cast including Shirley MacLaine, Neve Campbell, Mischa Barton and the late great Pete Postlethwaite. It tells the story set partly during the IRA years in Ireland, and then back to the second world war. Its not really a love story, but kind of is, it's about a love triangle, and a young man in Ireland who finds a ring, and decides to return it to it's rightful owner.
Not an amazing film, but I still very much enjoyed the 2 hour journey through history, and people's lives. Even though he doesn't have a massive part in it, it was also good to see Pete Postlethwaite on screen again.

Beau lady with gooooooooorgeously divine and magic powered hair is hidden in a tower for 18 years of her life and longs to leave and explore. She is forbidden though and spun a tale that the world beyond her window is a dangerous and frightful place she could not survive in. This all changes however, when a handsome young rogue discovers her and the tower when seeking to stow away from the kingdoms guards.
I needed a fluffy light fun film! Really liked this, was fun and humorous enough to emit a chuckle from me on the odd occasion! Very pretty and cutesy and just in general enjoyable! The horse in it... absolutely hilarious! I loved him! And the use of frying pans. Reminded me of my uni days :D
Not a mark on the likes of Despicable Me/Toy Story/Ice Age but really cute and bubbly.

Long day today outside and frollicking, so slightly sun kissed and warmed by the day I have relaxed and entertained myself with...
The Illusionist.
Oh. My. Good grief.
Brilliant. Utter joy for joy delightful film. Not one for romantics and dramas but this, this was fantastic. Edward Norton never lets me down.
Plot:
Peasant boy and upper class girl come together through the wonders of magic and a relationship blossoms, much to the dismay of her family. Through secret meetings they fall in love until one day their lives are pulled apart and he is left to travel the world whilst she is brought up in her rightful status. Their time together does not stop there and years on their paths cross when he performs an illusionary act within her home town to which she attends with her socially acceptable, but by no means perfect, husband to be - the Crown Prince.
Superb. My heart is suitably melted and I am entertained to a considerable elated state! I am happy. I feel like I have just digested a most sensational meal with all the trimmings yet remain comfortable and satisfied.
Plot line - very beautiful although somewhat predictable. I think the presentation eclipses the fact it is predictable. Gorgeously acted.
Definitely one to watch!

Machete
hIxcVzwLR1k
The highly skilled Federale Machete is hired by some unsavoury types to assassinate a senator. But just as he's about to take the shot, he notices someone aiming at him and realizes he's been set up. He barely survives the sniper's bullet, and is soon out for revenge on his former employers, with the reluctant assistance of his old friend Cheech Marin, who has become a priest and taken a vow of non-violence.
If you hire him to take out the bad guys, make sure the bad guys aren't you!
7/10
Thought this was marvouluse, needless killing with over the top blood reminded me of tarrintino. Ok story line but then it's a cheesy action film so what do you expect.
The Pianist
(I have issues pronouncing "Pianist". Complete brain malfunction. I'm saying it out aloud now and don't have a flipping clue if it's right or not. FAIL!)
Based on a true story this - the film follows the life of a professional Jewish pianist (Wladyslaw Szpilman) during World War II in Warsaw.
Very moving. Very very moving.
The way of the world back then just... renders me speechless.
I would say on parr with Schindler's List. Everyone should watch this film, words cannot express what emotions you go through when watching it.

Thor

7/10
Coming of age film. Thor does a naughty thing, gets stripped of his powers and exiled to earth being told to grow up.
Good film, but not excellent, established the kind of character Thor is. Solid acting all round, reasonable quality script. However:
Thor grew up too quickly. One minute he's the arrogant, vain, self confident little boy, the next he's had a couple of fights and all of a sudden he's selfless? The romance felt very strange, almost entirely unrealistic given his character when he arrived on earth. I'm sure that was meant to be the lynch pin of his personality change but the lack of depth made the whole thing improbable.
As a way of establishing the characters, ready for The Avengers, I thought it was decent, worth watching. 3D was a waste of money, absolutely nothing added at all by it.
If you go to watch it be sure to stick all the way through to the very end of the credits (two distinct sequences of credits, one fancy and one normal) for a hint at a future film. Not sure if that's Thor 2 or The Avengers.

I am Number Four
Having barely paid any attention to the trailers I was expecting a rip roaring action romp short on plot and big on explosions. However what I got was Twilight with aliens instead of vampires (according to Mrs DL) which whilst moderately amusing was clearly not aimed at me. Still there were some big explosions, some fighting and some horrifically bad acting from the main actors so I was happy enough.
6/10 though I suspect most teenagers would give it 8/10
The Tourist:
Spy thriller about a case of mistaken identity/man-hunt intrigue sort of movie.
Johnny Depp plays well but now slightly stereotypical role as a slightly bumbling clueless character.
Angelina Jolie the cool and sassy heroine - again not much different to her character in Salt. Cold hearted and on a mission.
Paul Bettanny as the overzealous interpol cop.
Not much action, more of a story dialogue, with amusing moments, and lovely scenery of Venice. It wasn't a "gripping" story, but a very easy watch and enjoyable watch. Glad I watched it though - but the suspense wasn't as uncomfortable or stressful as it should have been.
Still deserves a good 7/10 in my opinion - worth a watch. :)
The Book of Eli
Had been told this wasn't up to much but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nowhere near as 'religiousy' as I was expecting, some awesome fight scenes, a decent twist, and Mila Kunis. Did not expect any of those things.
8/10
Crank: High Voltage
This is purposefully insanely bad. I can't believe none of the actors ever questioned the things they're doing in the film because it's so over the top. It occasionally cuts away to 8-bit computer game graphics, graphically styled interludes, a full-on Godzilla fight with people in suits and countless stupid ways of charging an electrically-powered heart. At one point Statham is sent flying through a windscreen into the road, slides along for about 100 feet and gets up to dust himself down. It's a weird mix of comic book violence and comically gruesome violence. We also get a glimpse of main character Chev as a kid on a Jeremy Kyle style show. Geri Halliwell plays his mum. In another scene Ron Jeremy and Jenna Haze appear as porn-star protestors campaigning for higher wages - that's the kind of film this is.
They obviously all had a blast making this, and kudos must go to Amy Smart for her role. Not many mainstream actresses would sign up for such a terrible idea for a sequel, spend half the film wearing nothing but duct tape, and pretty much re-enact the strangest scene from the first film a second time.
I want to hate it. I want to rate it with the lowest score possible, but I can't.
5/10 - just for pure ridiculousness.

Burke and Hare
On paper, this has to be a good film. Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Bill Bailey, Christopher Lee, Tim Curry, Ronnie Corbett, Reece Shearsmith, Tom Wilkinson... John Landis directing... and a story about a pair of graverobbers turned murderers in 19th century Edinburgh.
Now, I knew this had received fairly bad reviews, so I wasn't expecting much, and this film really delivered. Badness, that is. For some inexplicable reason, it's not funny. It's just rather boring. My wife fell asleep and I found myself reaching for the guitar. There are a few "Ha" moments that raise a smile, but no belly laughs at all. Personally I think it's the script that lets this down. The amusing moments are pretty much all visual gags, while the dialogue is relatively devoid of humour, making the film seem interminably long.
Shame really, and it goes to show that mixing up some pretty good ingredients do not always make a palatable dish.
3/10
Ahhh I was looking forward to Burke and Hare. Might give this a skip, hadn't read any reviews til this morning and it sounds tripe!
I enjoyed The Book of Eli too Beemit. Good film.
Wanna see The Tourist... too busy!
This week seeing: Hanna and Elephants for Water then next week the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Excited about Hanna... hoping Elephants is good and know I'm going to be biased about POTC ;)
Elephants for Water? ;D
Had free tix for Water For Elephants, Attack the Block & Win Win this week but had to cancel. BOO!
Off to see Mildred Pierce (1945) tonight. I've seen it before but I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. How strange that Crawford changed her name, her real name was more Hollywood than her Hollywood name.
Having rewatched it Mildred Pierce (1945) gets 9/10. Great film, Crawford deservedly won the 1945 oscar for best actress for this. That said, Eve Arden was some scene stealer.
Elephants for Water? ;D
Just saw Hanna.
Am going bed now as tired but easy swipe of an 8.5 for me. If not higher.
Massive thumbs up!
I Am Number Four.
It was very meh. Not a bad film when there's nothing else to watch and you feel like turning your brain off for a while.
Battle Los Angeles
Very similar to the old John Wayne war movies where the American military are awesome and save the day against all odds. Again, not a bad film as such but not exactly brilliant.
The Social Network
I honestly didn't really know much about the film other than it had received a few nominations or a awards recently. I also knew it was loosely based on the creation of Facebook, and the story behind the founder. Unfortunately, the copy I had wasn't the best quality (the DVD was er.. scratched...) however it was more than watchable. In fact it made me look up the history of FB and Mark Zuckerberg. Fascinating - kinda makes you think what a simple idea it was...
Anyway, onto the film. I shall try and not let the quality interfere with my appreciation of it.
The humour was enjoyable, though sometimes the film would hop to and from different time lines, and the feeling of continuity was sometimes a little confusing. Things all seemed to happen really fast - but then again they had several years to bring into 1 movie.
The cliques within the universities, and the spread of facebook was interesting, and they could have gone into more depth about that, the trials were also quite interesting to see how they developed. Though was a little lost at times, but I probably was just tired!
Overall all however, I thought the film was really enjoyable, entertaining and interesting. Not one to watch over and over again, but certainly worthwhile seeing.

Any Which Way You Can
Starring Clint Eastwood Sondra Locke Geoffrey Lewis William Smith
Comedy sequel
6/10 Might as well review them together as they're basically the same film. It's just silly fun, Clint Eastwood is an almost indestructable bare knuckle boxing champ who can beat anyone for fun and has a tame Orangutan who's rather handy himself - there's elements of a buddy movie in there as well as a bit of romance and some sort of moral but don't take it too seriously as it doesn't take itself all that seriously.

A heady cross between Independence Day and Black Hawk Down with music from Inception (score writers, it worked in Inception but please stop ripping it off it's getting annoying).
The plot is entirely dispensable but there are some very good action sequences and if you can take it for what it is (mindless action) it's rather good fun.

True Grit (2011)
Before I start the review I've got to comment on something I spotted in the credits Mr Damon's Abs double :D
Anyways....... 1880s American girls father is murdered so she hires Jeff Bridges to hunt down the murderer and along the way Matt Damon ends up helping...
I tend to struggle with Coen brothers films, with the exception of Fargo I'm not a huge fan so I wasn't expecting too much (or to watch the whole film if I'm honest) so I was pleasantly surprised when I realised the first 30 minutes had passed without me dozing off and by the end I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had enjoyed the film :)
7/10 though I'm sure that fans of the Coen brothers would give it 8-9/10
Thor
Not a bad addition to the Marvel canon but feels a little out of place in the Avengers universe when compared with the other films. Hulk and Iron Man were sort of rooted in reality with large embellishments, whereas Thor is about beings from other planets with supernatural powers. I'm sure in the comics it works very well but something doesn't quite sit right with it in movie form as a part of the whole.
That said, the film as a standalone piece of work isn't bad. It's overly CGI'd and verging on camp for the first half an hour or so but then the action goes on hold and we actually get some decent story to build around the slightly hackneyed 'upstart vying for the throne of a long-lived and wise old king' motif.
A couple of laugh out loud moments, Natalie Portman as radiant and engaging as ever, and Chris Hemsworth does a pretty good job in the title role. I'm kind of hoping his physique was CGI as well because if it's real then, frankly, that's just not fair. Tom Hiddlestone as Loki was suitably smarmy too.

The Hurricane
Starring Denzel Washington Vicellous Reon Shannon Deborah Kara Unger Liev Schreiber
Drama
8/10 A true story about Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, at one point a middleweight contender before being convicted of a triple murder that he didn't commit. It's a powerful story about a miscarriage of justice but ultimately there's a sense of redemption in there for a man who never quite gave up on humanity. I've meant to watch it for ages but never quite got round to it as it's not a short film so I wanted to do it justice.
I also watched In The Loop today but I think I've already reviewed it so won't do so again - great fun with some very black humour with some of the best and most inventive swearing you'll hear on celluloid.
Lars and the Real Girl
Socially inept little brother Lars, lives in older brother Gus and his wives garage. After being shown the "Real Girl" website by a work colleague, Lars has a visitor come to stay with him, Bianca, the real girl doll.
Not my usual type of film, it was quite slow (no where enough guns and explosions!).
But, I really enjoyed it
7.5/10
Watched Senna last night. I was pleasantly surprised. I would have punted it as a documentary but I guess movies gross more or something. I was amazed at the amount of behind the scenes footage they actually have that they pieced together really well.
All in all I'd give it a 7/10
The Hangover Part 2
Well, it follows pretty much the same format as the 1st. So from that point of view pretty predictable. Furthermore, the memory recollection seemed less smooth that the 1st one, and seemed to have all happened all at once. However, in spite of the predictability, and similar format - the jokes were funny, there were a lot of laugh out loud moments (for me anyway! :D), and bits I couldn't help but giggle at. It's all over the top, all a bit ridiculous, and honestly, there was no need for a sequel. However, the girls are pretty (the bride to be is an exceptionally hot Asian girl which is always a bonus! :D), some of the jokes are crass and perfect for a puerile mind like mine :D
Not as good as the first one, purely owing to lack of originality, but, funny in it's own way, and just bonkers at times. I really liked it though. Great fun!
7.5/10
Totally agree Will, saw it the other day and really enjoyed it. I don't understand people slating it, saying it's identical. Wtf were you expecting, bonkers.
The town
BXY_JvOK63c
There are over 300 bank robberies in Boston every year. And a one-square-mile neighbourhood in Boston, called Charlestown, has produced more bank robbers than anywhere in the U.S. One of them is Doug MacRay, the leader of a crew of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves on taking what they want and getting out clean. The only family Doug has are his partners in crime, especially Jem, the closest thing Doug ever had to a brother. Things change when Jem takes a blindfolded hostage: bank manager Claire Keesey. After the job, Doug seeks out Claire, who has no idea that this charming stranger is one of the men who terrorized her only days before. As his relationship with Claire deepens into a passionate romance, Doug wants out of this life and the town. But with the Feds, led by Agent Frawley, closing in and Jem questioning his loyalty, Doug realizes that getting out will not be easy and, worse, may put Claire in the line of fire.
7/10
Not exactly what I was expecting love story with bank robbing. pretty decent film and well worth a watch but has nothing on inside man/kill point. But then I prefer ones based in the bank.

Starring Liam Neeson Diane Kruger January Jones Aidan Quinn
Thriller
6/10 Stars Liam Neeson as a man who is in an accident and loses his memory, waking up to find that someone else has 'stolen' his life and his wife. He slowly pieces it together as people try to kill him and stop him from uncovering the truth. If you can switch off then it's fine, if not you'll wonder why much of it is happening.
I Am Number 4
Starring Alex Pettyfer Timothy Olyphant Teresa Palmer Dianna Agron
Superhero drama type thing
6/10 Another brainless film which passes the time, there's little idea of why things are the way the are but provided you don't look at it too closely it's fine. There's plenty of action for the most part to distract from the storyline.
The Fighter
Starring Mark Wahlberg Christian Bale Amy Adams Melissa Leo
True life dramatisation
8/10 Easily the best of the films on offer, the story of Micky Ward who somewhat improbably managed to turn his career round and win a World title despite seeming to be well on the downward slope. It's interesting in that many of the characters aren't particularly likeable but I found myself warming to a number of them in the end as they were well acted with flaws enough to make them human.

I went to see Bridesmaids last night.
The plot wasn't bad, it became a little predictable too early on though. Some of the humour was good in places, others it was just, frankly, terrible. It wasn't my first choice film, and I think in hindsight I'd put it in the category of 'wait until it's on offer on DVD'!
I'll score it a 6.5/10.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
Diehard video game fans compete to break World Records on Donkey Kong
Bit of background to this one, was up in Newcastle last weekend visiting my best friend and his pregnant wife, now normally we would end up drunk in toon but due to the pregnant factor we ended up getting drunk at their flat (she didn't) whilst watching films. Now pregnant lady is a she geek and insisted that we watch this film, initially I thought that it was one of the best written mockumentarys I had ever seem but half way through I was told that it is a real life documentary. Never before I have I been so engrossed in a film documentary (though I admit that I have yet to see Senna) to the point that I was screaming at the TV at the sheer injustice of parts of the film (booze may have helped). Even Miss DL who is a normal person loved it!

I agree with Johny on the Bridesmaid front. Some of the jokes were hilarious and then others were just cringe worthy! But it did have a good plot and it kept me interested the whole way through.
So I would say about 7/10
Also went and saw Pirates of the Caribbean last night. It was pretty good. I wouldn't say it was the best so far, but then I thought the previous films were very good. It still had all the action and interest but it just seemed to have a little something missing. I think the second half was better than the first half, just seemed abit slow to start off with. Would give it 8/10. Don't regret seeing it in the cinema.

Slowly the spacecraft's shocking, deadly secrets are revealed, and the astronauts find their own survival is more important than they could ever have imagined.

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves. Based on the trilogy of books by Stieg Larsson, to be followed by 'THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE'and 'THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST'.

So glad they did a dubbed edition, much better than subtitled IMO.
Although it does look like Hollywood are doing a remake, let me guess it'll suck in comparison.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would, more than 'Taken' in fact which seems to be the opposite of what most other people have said. Pretty consistent all the way through, entertaining action thriller. Bruno Ganz was excellent as usual but felt that Frank Langella despite being good was miscast.

Definitely a Marmite sort of film I feel. Fortunately for me I really liked it. Some of the scenes were uncomfortable to watch but I thought that it added to the film. As Pheebs had said previously I thought the sex scenes fitted into the film well, I could see why they were there. Impressed by the acting from everyone in this. Barbara Hershey though needs to stop doing stuff to her face, I found her quite distracting!

Yep, sorry I just forgot to change the name but Jen is right, it was Limitless. I can't remember if Sucker Punch was an option on my flight out but I watched it at a mates house on AppleTV - incidentally this contraption has an interface that makes even the simplest of tasks into a real chore.
If you were flying with either Air Canada then that might explain the similarities in film choices but I don't imagine you were. However with United on the way back was when I got Limitless and I'd forgotten that I watched most of Paul as well - reasonably funny from what I saw but since I don't know how much I missed it wouldn't be totally fair to review it.

Starring Sylvester Stallone Burt Young Antonio Tarver Geraldine Hughes
It's a Rocky film - what do you expect?
7/10 Better than I feared it would be considering Stallone isn't exactly in his prime but concentrates on a story and is a good fun film.
Harry Brown
Starring Michael Caine Emily Mortimer Charlie Creed-Miles David Bradley
Thriller
8/10 The closest comparison I can think of is probably Gran Torino although in some ways it's somewhat less believable. It's a good film overall and well acted though.
lol they must be doing the rounds...yeah we had Limitless too & although it was tempting to have some BC time seen it b4.
Instead I got it from 'Hes just not that into you' which was a nice easy film to watch.

Drive Angry
O2-hiHUh4UQ
A tongue-in-cheek and hugely enjoyable action blast, full of smoking-hot cars and drop-dead gorgeous women, with Nicolas Cage on top form. Milton (Cage) is a hardened - albeit dead - criminal who has so far spent his afterlife in Hell. Enraged by the murder of his daughter and the imminent sacrifice of his baby granddaughter by a brutal religious cult, Milton breaks out to stop the REAL evil-doers before they fully unleash Hell on Earth. Aided by a seriously hot and sassy waitress Piper (AMBER HEARD – All The Boys Love Mandy Lane) and driving a cherry red muscle car which Piper liberates from her meat-head ex, Milton is blazing a trail in pursuit of the brutal cult leader. But Milton's being hounded too – not only by the police but by an enigmatic character known only as The Accountant (a scene stealing WILLIAM FICHTNER from Entourage and Prison Break), who has been sent by the Devil to bring Milton back to Hell. Milton is mad, bad and Hell-bent on achieving his goal. He's breaking all the rules, but what are they gonna do – not let him back in?
7.5/10
Reminds me of ghost rider, but unlike ghost rider it's done very well. It's as described, it is indeed hugely enjoyable tongue in cheek. Also omg Amber Heard is amazingly sexy *drools* she's bisexual and loves American muscle cars and guns. Think I've found my future wife.
It's so fluffy... I'm going to diiiiie!

Pretty funny, some real laugh out loud moments. Drops off a little towards the end and the ending is farcial, but I'd still say it's worth a watch. I'd not have been disappointed if I'd paid to see it. I think Jenny A makes it worthwhile watching for the boys on her own ;)

Loved it. By far and above one of the best Superhero movies to come out of Hollywood in years. Hugo Weaving was suitably menacing as the Red Skull, but it's really rather hard not to hear him in evil roles and not expect him to say "Mr Anderson" in the next breath. Was great to see Dominic Cooper still picking up a diverse set of roles.
Some good laugh out loud moments, good action sequences, and for the first time in a while with one of these genre films, my heart got pounding.
-0.5 because: The CGI of Chris as a weakling felt a little off at times, his head seemed out of proportion with his body.
-0.5 more because: The technology.. it felt too odd that hydra had submarines and other devices using technology way ahead of their time, as if a lack of an abundance of energy was the only thing holding people back in the 40s, not the comparatively immature state of scientific knowledge. The original story line would have been better.
Looking forward to The Avengers next year. With Joss Whedon at the helm and such a talented ensemble it will hopefully be a strong showing.

Con Air
Starring Nicholas Cage Colm Meaney John Cusack Mykelti Williamson
Prison escape film
7/10 It's rubbish on any number of levels and yet great at the same time because it's so overblown and silly. I've said it before and I'll say it again, whoever thought that Nicholas Cage should have a Southern accent was a stone cold genius. There's also a fine ensemble cast including John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi and Ving Rhames.
Gladiator
Starring Russell Crowe Joaquin Phoenix Connie Nielsen Oliver Reed
Historical epic
8/10 A good film with some great performances, maybe a bit overlong though.
Watchmen
Starring Malin Akerman Billy Crudup Matthew Goode Jackie Earle Haley
Graphic novel adaptation
8/10 I've never read the graphic novels that this was based on and I really knew very little about this before buying it but it's very good indeed. Possibly a little flawed but entertaining, engaging and actually presents a fairly mature and dark fantasy world. It might have been easy to just play this for laughs but that hasn't been done and that is to be applauded.

6/10 It features the main stars of Swingers but it's nowhere near as sharp or as funny as that film. It does have a fairly decent cast with Peter Falk, Vincent Pastore and David O'Hara all making an appearance but I wouldn't suggest going out of your way to watch it.

7/10 I've been waiting quite a while to see this film and it didn't really disappoint, it's silly and dated but it's fun. It's unbelievable in almost every way but if you just go with the daft premise it's a good way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
A little behind the times with these but here's a few I watched over the weekend...
District 9
Love it. Been waiting to sit down and watch this for ages and never got around to it. I love the whole setting. Yes, the apartheid connection is there, but it was just so nice to see something like this NOT going on in America. I like the whole mix of normal filming along with some fly on the wall documentary style. The level of action was just about right, not too constant or over the top and it kept the pace up when needed but also backed out totally to allow you to see a slightly softer and deeper side to some of the characters. I try not to get too in-depth with films and just want to come away having enjoyed it...and this I did :)

X Men : First Class
It's OK. Nothing amazing but then I wasn't expecting a great deal. It was nice to see a little story behing the whole X Men thing and, if you're not a huge fan with all the background knowledge, they slowly pieced together some of the characters so you'd figure out who they were throughout the film. Only bit that made me proper laugh was the Wolverine scene ;D
6/10
127 Hours
Not sure what to make of this one. It was gritty and intense at times and just a bit boring at others. Had I not known it was based around a true story then it would have been dull, it was only because I know somebody actually went through it that it made me think that little bit more and kept the boredom away. A decent enough film but not sure I'd recommend it to others.

Bit of cheesy nostalgia, Kari and I spotted the movie was up on netflix streaming and gave it a watch.
Yup every bit as bad as it ever was, but fun. Full of cheesy one liners "Enjoy the trip? See you next Fall!", unbelievable plot, dodgy CGI, odd fight sequences and bad acting.
The evil super villain Ivan Ooze has been unwittingly released and plots to take over the world, killing Zordon and draining the source of the Power Ranger's powers, forcing them to travel to another Galaxy to gain the powers of the Ninjetti, new Zords (and lots of more sales for the authorized toy makers).

Gentlemen make no mistake this is a chick flick, however it is from the very rare breed of chick flicks that will not make you gouge your eyes out with a spoon and pop your ear drums with your car keys and for that it deserves some credit.

Honestly I has the displeasure of having to watch this whilst in holland, and i think 5 is kind! There is NOTHING to this film, i don't understand the name, it doesn't even have anything to do with Red Riding Hood! This really caught me, and seeing the helicopter arrive honestly nearly had me bawling in the cinema for the first time since i was a nipper, really not sure why, as some people have said it drags on the same place for too long. Exactly how i'd put it, its what you obviously expect and sill, but if it wasn't or it was too clever it would actually be terrible! I agree, i'm not one for will ferrell films or the like in most cases find them tedious but the inbetweeners has caught me off guard and i love it. I think it helps that the first series was released only a few years after i left school and could possibly relate in silly ways, i think there is a whole generation like me who were easily exploited into liking this franchise. But i don't care, its genius!
Friends with Benefits 8/10
Witty, smart. Lots of nekkid Justin Trousersnake for the girls and Mila Kunis for the boys. They make a cute couple and there were some real LOL moments :)

A sex doll!?!
Ryan Gosling is on top form playing a socially awkward loner in a small town, who lives in his brother's converted garage. One day he introduces his brother and sister-in-law to his new girlfriend, a tall, wheelchair bound, brunette.. 'real' sex doll, who he believes is real, interested in her not for sex but something deep and meaningful.
What follows is a really beautifully acted tale focusing around Lars and his relationship, and the small town that goes along with the delusion to support the sweet-natured guy they've always loved.
Well worth a watch, I thought the premise was odd but saw a few people on twitter highly recommending it, and now I know why. Kari and I both enjoyed it very much :)

Hmmm... if you like arty, atmospheric thrillers, then this should be on your list. The acting is first rate, the sets and locations are all suitably dark and sinister and the cinematography is spot on. It is really a great film in many respects.
However, it just didn't quite engage me for some reason. It's not in any way a bad film, but at one stage I did find myself wondering how much longer there was to go. It felt a fairly long film. Not, by any means, one where I found myself thinking of other things, or counting the tiles on the ceiling, just that, while gripping and enjoyable, I knew I was sitting in the cinema watching a film, if you get what I mean? It didn't whisk me along with it. It's not a lack of action per se, it is, after all, a thriller, it's just all a bit..... slow....

It is definitely one of those films where they try to say as much with a blank stare, or a twitch of the lips, as they do with the actual dialogue. I didn't really have any trouble following it though... I just thought it was a bit heavy going.
You should read the book, it's captivating. I love John le Carre books though. :)
I didn't have any trouble following it either. Seemed relatively straight forward to me. It did feel like a pretty adult thriller in that it didn't bother with any of the hand holding things like titles along the bottom telling you what time/place they're in etc but that's what I liked about it. There's definitely a big focus on looks as well as what they say which I love. Really demonstrates how great the acting is in the film too. While I don't always want something that requires concentration, other times it's good to be treated intelligently. :)
I've not read the book or seen the original series but ordered the series and will no doubt pick up the book at some point as it certainly piqued my interest enough!

Exactly. Exactly my experience. The end fell flat for me too. Acting was superb, but tbh I was bored...and I'm not someone who needs a lot of action to keep me entertained so I dont know what it was. I like to be treated intelligently too and get bored with obvious plotlines or films with holes in, so it's not that. I just know it didn't engage me. Potential Spoiler Alert
The end seemed to suggest a relationship, and indeed a side to him, that had barely, if at all, been touched on before in the film. It was almost a "oh, and by the way..." moment. I mean, ok, it explained a lot about why the guy was repatriated and "hidden away", I suppose, but the depth and significance of that relationship hardly mattered by the end, except, perhaps, to emphasise his "only business" approach to the other guys wife

It's a Kevin Smith film, but you wouldn't know it... It's grown up, theres action happening on camera and most surprisingly, the camera actually moves!
:D
Have to say, that I think that this is Kevin's best film. It's marketed as a psychological horror movie, but it's not. It's certainly got some shocking elements in it but it's really more of thriller/action film.
Considering that Kevin has gone back to his indie roots for this film, in the process ****ing off a lot of studios and critics... He's also taken it further, he's set up his own studio to distribute the film - which is awesome. :D Unfortunately, it also means that he's got problems with some of the major cinema chains not wanting to show the film. Pity, it's fantastic.
The utter highlight for me was Michael Parks - a magnificent performance in a pivotal role of rather a strange character.

Green Lantern
7/10
Good job by all actors (mmm.. hello Blake Lively..). CGI reasonable except for Hal's face-mask. Plot okay but nothing mind blowing. Goes away from established canon quite significantly in a number of ways but I guess that's just the way they like to roll.
comic geek: Still prefer Kyle Rayner as the Green Lantern, and the quality of his constructs, rather than the fairly simplistic approach of Hal Jordan.

Think "The Goonies" crossed with a monster movie.
A bunch of kids are filming a Zombie flick using a home video camera, and witness a massive train crash after which very odd things start happening in their home town and the arrival of the air force complicates things somewhat.
Enjoyable, some funny moments, well acted by all the kids in it. Never seemed to miss a beat with me. Well worth watching.
Attack the Block.
Utter Tosh 2/10 Hated all the characters bar one and the visitors looked like the 'hug in a mug' from the old bachelors ads crossed with a fancy dress shop gorilla. Least scary thing I've ever seen (although admittedly, I'd not want to wake and find one standing at the end of my bed)

Transformers - Dark of the Moon
Who would have thought it, a plot that makes even less sense than the previous two put together. Luckily Michael Bay knows how to make things go bang so disengage your brain for 2 hours and 25 minutes and keep another source of entertainment on hand (BD on a laptop for example) for the first hour whilst he is doing the 'plot' bit.

What a very strange film, I've not read the comics so not sure if it's trying to adhere to them but the plot doesn't really work in the film which is a shame as it's reasonably good fun. Some good booms and bangs but the first 40 minutes should be done in 10 minutes to avoid the boredom that sets in.

Transformers 3
Dear god this was awful! After all the talk of Bay recognising his mistakes in the second film and not repeating them, this was actually worse again. Totally boring storyline that failed to hold my attention and even the action scenes were getting a bit tired and 'samey'.

Captain America
Held my interest but took a long time to get going. They obviously have to do the origin bit but took a bit long doing so. Once it got going it was better but still all a bit 'silly' really IMO. Have to say the CGI used to make Chris Evans look short, skinny & gaunt at the start was utterly amazing and totally convincing! Was like his face on a different person.

Captain America
Agree with Toby that the start was too long which is a real shame as it felt like they ran out of time at the end and compressed too much into a short timeframe leaving the story feeling a bit disjointed and very rushed. Still the SFX were brilliant and there were a suitable number of action scenes and explosions so I was happy enough.

From Dusk till Dawn
Well the special effects in this film have ages very badly though probably not helped by even the lowest budget modern films having access to computer effects that they would have killed for in blockbusters in the 90s but that aside this is still a fun film.
I think what really makes the film is the humour that runs throughout that had me chuckling through most of the film. Well worth revisiting.

Attack The Block
You know those fancy special effects I mentioned that budget films have access to, well someone forgot to tell the Producer/Director of Attack the Block. Not a horrific way to spend 90 minutes if you have nothing else to do but certainly not worth going out of your way to watch this film.
4/10
It was the worst film I've seen in a long, long time. The aliens were laughable!
The Swimmer
Trippy, random, slightly uncomfortable but ultimately cool. Starring Burt 'Mr Muscles and Teeth' Lancaster who looks incredible especially considering he was 52 when this was made. Great performance from him and a surprise appearance from Joan Rivers (has she ever looked young!?).

Brief Encounter
Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard are excellent in this. Quite ahead of it's time with how it portrayed adultery. I've always thought there was far more to this film than it being just a love story.

The Road to Perdition
Can't believe it's taken me this long to see it, especially as American Beauty is one of my favourite films (same director).
Whilst not quite as good as that, it was certainly a better production than everything else I've seen recently. There was a line where Tom Hanks is talking to his kid about money that made me belly laugh too.
8/10
Yeah loved that movie - was really surprised when I first saw it, seeing Tom Hanks in such a cold hard contrast to his previous roles.
This reminds me... I haven't been to the flicks in ages - completely lost track of what's out there at the moment, I'm sure I remember seeing lots of trailers earlier on in the year making me think "I must go and watch that!".
Bridesmaids.... is it supposed to be good right from the get go, or does it take a good 20 odd minutes to get going before it gets properly funny? I rented this as so many people told me how good it was but I sense it's so not for me after having watched the first 20 odd minutes. Humour is an odd thing though what appeals to one does not appeal to the other.

Transporter 3
This film is most likely a 15 year old boys wet dream, drive a fast car, make a sexy lady fall for you and then kill some bad guys. Alas I'm not 15 which is a shame as I remember the first film being quite good fun, the third itteration suffers from a distinct lack of quality driving and what little there is is often sped up so it looks stupid. The female lead deserves special mention for portraying quite possibly the most annoying heroine even seen on the big screen and I frequently found myself wishing the film would end with her catching a stray bullet.

Hangover 2
If you've seen the first one then you'll know what to expect from the sequel. If you haven't seen the first one then watch it instead as it's by far the better film.
The Hangover 2 reunited the old gang for a wedding in Thailand and surprise surprise despite the best efforts of the groom to behave they end up waking up in a scummy hotel room in Bangkok with no recollection of the previous night and one of their party missing.
Hilarity ensues as they try to find him but nowhere near as much hilarity as the first film because you know what level of crude debauchery to expect. Think American Pie 2, same level of humour as the first but nowhere near as funny as it wasn't new and shocking anymore.
Still it's well worth a watch with plenty of moments that had me tittering away to myself though I did nearly get in trouble with Miss DL for having rather too much knowledge about some of the seedier aspects of the film ;D

Bullitt
I was inspired to finally get round to watching this film after the disappointment that was Drive and I wasn't disappointed. The plot is fairly basic and Steve McQueen plays Steve McQueen but they do a good job of wrapping themselves around the important bit, the car chase. Lots has been written about the car chase by people far more talented than me so I will give you a brief summary, it gave me the horn in a way that nothing since Ronin has managed.

Conan The Barbarian - 2011
I'm sure there was a good film in there struggling to get out but unfortunately Conan suffers from the same problems as many recent Superhero/Mythicalhero films. The good action sequences and CGI are really let down but an incoherent story line and badly written script, the cast do well enough with what they are given and are suitably pretty, muscular and scary (where appropriate) but half way through I was already waiting for the end.

Diamonds Are Forever
You may notice a bit of a theme here as I've had a bit of a Bondfest recently (one of the advantages of being unemployed) and I must say it's altered my perception of the films quite a bit so in no particular order (though it may end up be alphabetical) here we go.....
One of my least favourite Bond films growing up though that was before I realised the attraction of a feisty redhead and revisiting it I really enjoyed it. It's one of the later Connery films, the story isn't too OTT (well compared to the Moore films that followed) and it also has Mr Wint & Mr Kidd who are brilliant assassins.

For Your Eyes Only
One of my favorite Bond films growing up and it remains so, the plot is coherent enough that it doesn't feel like it's just there to join action sequences together and I love the chase in the 2CV. The finally is suitable tense with the climb up to St Cyril's with a number of other very good action sequences especially the ones underwater.

Goldeneye
It's easy for forget just how huge this film was when it was released in 1995 and also easy to forget just how good this film is given the other relatively weak Bond films that Pierce Brosnan stared in.
For a Bond film the plot is coherent and very well written and the action sequences add to the film rather than being the film, it really feels like a proper Bond film from the 60s but updated for the 90s (I nearly wrote modern day before I realised it was released more than half my lifetime ago but that probably reflects how well the film has aged)
IMO this is one of the best Bond films out there and well deserves.....

Please please!! Somebody stop him making these films!!! The first one was good, the second ok, but this one... diabolical and not helped by the following...
JS fishing, impossible stunt, pecs, annoying girl, pecs, impossible stunt, explosion, annoying girl, totally unecessary and cringeworthy 'love scene', pecs, explosion (repeat several times) JS fishing.
Frank would sooooooo not go for a broad like that?! OMG she was sooo ****ing annoying... I was |---| this close to walking out because of her!
Was glad it finished. Could have been about 30mins shorter with her scenes edited out.
T Bag from Prison Break was in it though and a good baddie.
I've told Rob to ditch the Fiat Coupe and get an Audi. The Fiat takes 2hrs to recover from damp, but the Audi took about 20mins to recover from full submersion in a lake. Superb!
In a nutshell (lol) easy no brainer (certainly) explosion and man muscles (though he's getting a bit old now - baldy?!) film.

Cowboys vs. Aliens
There is so much to dislike about this film before it even starts, well the title, it sounds like a dodgy B Movie that you'd expect to see on a Wednesday afternoon on SciFi so I really wasn't expecting much from this film.
The film starts with a amnesia struck Daniel Craig looking suitably sexy (I'm not gay or owt but I would) and develops into a Western before surprise, surprise there is an Alien attack and Harrison Ford turns up. From this point onwards the film reminds me a lot of Indiana Jones 4, an Alien plot in a film where you can't help feeling it doesn't fit. There's something about Aliens, I'll happily accept them in a film based now or the future (or whatever they thought it would be in the 70/80s) but Aliens in the past just feels wrong. Anyways, luckily the similarity to Indiana Jones 4 are limited as that was ****e whereas Cowboys vs. Aliens is rather good fun.
Definitely not a film to be taken too seriously but a pretty good plot, good CGI and good acting left me very pleasantly surprised.

Sylvester Stallone as a prisoner transferred to a high-security institution by a vindictive warden (Donald Sutherland). Decent late-80s fare with enough tension to make it semi-believable. Bit paint-by-numbers by today's standards though. Worth a look.

Easy A
Expecting very little I was actually pleasantly surprised. Emma Stone is a 'nobody' at her school until she lies to a friend about losing her virginity. Overheard by the school Jesus-freak (their words, not mine), the rumour spreads. Catalysed by reading The Scarlett Letter, she starts to make up new stories about her promiscuity to help other misfits at the school appear more popular, with results that snowball out of control until she doesn't even recognise herself any more.
Oh, it's a comedy btw.
Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci as her parents are standout characters. Both hilarious. Apart from that it's not laugh-a-minute but any movie that can ward off my hatred of Thomas Haden Church obviously has something going for it.
It's no Mean Girls, but Emma Stone is outstanding as Olive; cute, smart and funny. I'm certain she will become the actress that Lindsay Lohan should have been.

Unthinkable
Nice idea for a film but it was always kind of set up to fail. Michael Sheen is excellent as the US citizen turned Muslim extremist who is tortured to find the location of nuclear bombs he has planted in various cities; the man can certainly act like he's in extreme pain! Sam Jackson calls it in a little as the cold-blooded torturer but, as he often does, is clearly just enjoying himself in the role. Carrie-Ann Moss is just OK.
Almost a twist at the end but it was a bit predictable. And the 'unthinkable' part that makes the film's title has already been done in one of the middle seasons of 24. Didn't help that Sheen's character's wife also played the wife of President Hassan in that same program! I guess the one saving grace is that this is wrapped up in 90 minutes though.

Age of Heroes
The true story of the formation of Ian Fleming's 30 Commando unit, a precursor for the elite forces in the U.K.
Given that it's based on a true story it's not really surprising that the basic plot for this film is quite good, unfortunately it is ruined by the script that is wrapped around it. I've got no objection to swearing in a film (and I have no idea how prevalent **** (poo) and **** (rhymes with duck) were in the war) but there is far too much swearing in the film and it makes it feel like a bunch of people acting like they are in 1943 rather that like you are watching people from 1943. It's just one example of the bad dialogue that runs through the film but certainly the most noticeable.
The next big problem with the film is Danny Dyer, the rest of the cast do the best they can with the poor dialogue but Danny, bless his little cockney socks, does his best to over act every single line and the end result is he looks like a guy from 2011 pretending to be from 1943 and failing badly.
It's a real shame this film is let down by such bad acting and such poor dialogue as the basic premise is sound, the SFX good enough and most of the cast do their jobs as well as you'd expect. Unfortunately it is ultimately a let down :(

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
As the title suggests the film explores how the apes rise to power in the Planet of the Apes franchise.
First thing you notice about this film is the Ape CGI which with a couple of minor exceptions looks damn near real which is mighty impressive given the amount of screen time the Apes get.
I'm not sure if I'm getting more grumpy in my old age and you may start to spot a theme here but I can't help feel that this is another film let down by the plot, the first half of the film moves very slowly to build up the story line but with the exception of the lead Ape I didn't bond with any of the good guys and the bad guys were just generically bad (and let down by the lad who plays Malfoy in HP) rather than being bad guys you wanted something horrible to happen to, I simply didn't care what happened to them which rather dampened my enthusiasm for the film. Things improve in the second half of the film with the plot moving along quickly and a good action sequence (this is where some of the CGI gets rather noticeable) but then the film finished rather abruptly. No doubt this was done to leave lots of stuff open and set up a sequel but it left me feeling very dissatisfied as they didn't really wrap the first one up properly.
I'm sure others will enjoy this film a lot more than me but personally it felt like a easy to knock out Blockbuster from a franchise that has seen far better.
I really want to give it 5/10 but I think 6/10 is probably a fairer score.
Right at Your Door
This is currently on Iplayer (until 1:24AM Thu, 8 Dec 2011). Not the sort of film I normally watch but was looking to stick something on while I was doing other things (I'm such a multi-tasker ;) ).
Thriller about the aftermath of a terrorist attack on Los Angeles. A couple become separated when multiple biological weapons are detonated in the area around the Californian city, with the husband sealed safely inside their house and the wife just yards away but trapped outside. With the city under siege and toxic dust in the air, he struggles to save his wife from a slow and painful death.
Not exactly high budget with more of a TV movie feel than hollywood, even so, worth a watch.

The Dilemma
Thought this would be gash as the plot sounded pretty lame - Vince Vaughn catches his best friend's wife cheating and as he puts off telling him he gradually becomes the bad guy for all kinds of different reasons. As it was directed by Ron Howard I thought 'how bad can it be?'. Pretty bad as it turns out.
The only person who seems to do any acting is Jennifer Connelly and her role as Vaughn's too-good-for-him girlfriend isn't even that prevalent. Kevin James plays Kevin James as always, and I can only guess gets these roles because he sold his soul to Adam Sandler or something.
Barely a laugh to be had and the only good scene is when Vaughn confronts the lover that his friend's wife is cheating with.
4/10
Four Christmases
Maybe I was maxed out on Vince Vaughn and already in a bad mood but I don't know how this film got made. Reece Witherspoon is delightful pretty much throughout but that's just not enough to carry this.
The two of them are a couple opposed to marriage and kids after suffering their own parents' messy divorces. They lie every year as to why they can't make it home for Christmas but this year their usual holiday plans are scuppered due to fog grounding all the planes, so they proceed to visit each of the four parents separately.
Of course each visit is painful to watch for various reasons that I can't even be bothered to go into. The only part that bordered on funny was where they sit around a table and try to play Taboo. It barely felt like a Christmas movie, and the slow plot revelation that family is a good thing through all this dysfunction was about as subtle as a truck driving through the wall.
Robert Duvall and Jon Favreau have the most fun parts by far.
A generous 3/10.
