View Full Version : The online users list - why is it turned off for us plebs?

Why not just enable it for everyone?

I find it odd being on a forum where you don't know who's online. The place could be full or I could be the only one here

The don't want you to know they're all hiding and talking about you.

exceppt it tells you next to each forum how many people are veiwing it, so you know if it is empty :)

Jesus, you really do love your online users list thing don't you? :p

I didn't even notice it was gone until it appeared later.

It's just a design choice that was taken way back when, and hasn't been looked at since. We'll have a chat about it :)

I prefer it hidden. I'd like to think the forum is mostly full when I'm browsing and not empty.

There is a perfectly good reason why some services aren't available until a user has surpassed a set number of posts, once people surpass that number of posts they get a few other services :)

Personal services? Or executive relief?

What number of posts? :dunno:

I think it is over 10 posts, at which point you can send PMs and view who is online etc. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me. :)

Although does it matter much how many people are online? If you get responses then there must be someone around.

Actually, this is wrong ;D don't even know how the forums are set up :D

10 posts allows you to PM. We added this to stop bots spamming PM's about. We'll take a look at the who's online stuff and maybe change it.

I do not wish for you to know whether I am online or not.

But he could search for posts by you, then simply look at the online/offline indicator.....if he wished to see if a specific member was online at that time.
Unless, of course, said member was using invisible mode.

Indeed :)

If you want to be hidden for whatever reason then you can use invisible browsing. As usual, when it's all changed about we'll let the members know.

Sounds odd. Will check out the permissions over the weekend :)

Actually, seems more like a template issue. The date and number are in white text on a green background.

Does the time & # appear if you view the source?

Mark
12-09-2008, 20:28
That's what I'm thinking. Easiest way to tell is to log out. If you still can't see the date/post number, it's not a permissions issue.

Daz
12-09-2008, 20:29
We dont do anything with those in the templates I can tell you that, and neither of those are a usergroup permission, so I'd be with sleepy and point at the css for some reason.

APOL has borked the forums.

Mark
13-09-2008, 13:12
Makes a change from an admin doing it I suppose. ;D :p

Do you have any adblocking installed (plugins or via a firewall). Sometimes they can overreact to small but innocent images and block them. See also Web bugs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_beacon).

Turning those off (or whitelisting BD) and then a swift Ctrl+F5 should sort it.

divine
13-09-2008, 13:12

That should be grey, and it's what should make a grey bar behind the text you can't see, rather than plain white...

CTRL-F5 ftw?

Mark
13-09-2008, 13:17

OT but no, no, it shouldn't. Maybe your monitor calibration is a little off.

The colour is approximately #96b3ac, which, since it has more blue and green components than red, is slightly cyan.

divine
13-09-2008, 13:24
meh, look at the position on the colour chart, closer to the grey side than the colour - ergo more grey than cyan ergo it is grey :p

The monitor calibration is fine, it's more likely my colour blindness stumbling me there tbh :(

Pedantry maybe, but that's not factually correct. The original image you posted showed Google Toolbar, which counts (even though technically that blocks popups, not inline ads). It's been a long time since I've used Google Toolbar because more recent browsers have the search box built in, but I don't recall any specific problems here. Even so, it's still a possibility. Try disabling it and see if that makes any difference.

Worth having a scour around your machine for anything else you didn't think did adblocking, but actually does? Antivirus, Antispyware, Firewall (either on the PC or router), proxy, etc. would all be candidates. Also clear the IE cache and have a look around your IE settings to see if you've disabled anything that might be relevant.
