Car was screwed this morning. It won't go into either reverse or 1st gear.
I've booked it into the garage tomorrow but got 2 questions
1) is it OK to start in second gear and pull into the garage (it's only about 200 meters away)
2) What the **** causes that? Any idea on cost?
Luckily my flatmate is on holiday so I can nick his car for a few days

It might just be linkages, which will be relatively cheap, or the actual gearbox might be ****ed, in which case, lube up.
As for starting in 2nd, if the engine is powerful enough to pull off in second, it's fine, though IIRC you have a Corsa, so whether it will I don't know :p
yep sounds like a linkage
Either gear linkages or the clutch might be worn. First and reverse are usually the hardest to get it into when the clutch is at the extreme end of its adjustment. Might just need a new clutch cable.

Are those things expensive?
Clutch/Clutch cable wouldn't be massively expensive, though it depends what you class as expensive I suppose

£300+?
Whole new clutch might push that, depending where you get it done, doubt a cable would come that close.
Clutch cable will be about £15 for the part (depends on the car though) and they will probably charge you an hour labour on top at about £45 +vat

Where did you take it?
Garage on Payne Road near me that I've always got my MOT's done since I moved. I appreciate that it may all fall to bits :p
Yeah I know where you mean, just wondered as I know a lot of the garages around there, just wondered if you'd taken it to someone I knew :p

It's the one right next to the Elf garage.
Yeah I know the one, I don't know them though :p

It's only 1 bloke. Seems pretty sound though - Assuming it costs what it says and works :p
Master or slave clutch cylinder - probably the latter.

Got it back fixed.
The people that guess linkage were right :D
Luckily he managed to sort it without having to actually replace any parts.
oooh yeah, reply number 1, first comment - linkages. Do I win a prize?

Yeah, you win a cup-o-spunk.
It needed a new tire and a few other things to pass the MOT so was over £200 but under £300 in total I reckon is pretty good for a car that hasn't been serviced in about 3 years :p
