Stupid thing! I take it in for a service and got some kind of electrical problem since. It's happened about 4 times now. Driving along and suddenly, all the dials (revs, speed, petrol temperature) all drop to 0 and the mile counters go out and indicators stop working. It does that for a couple of seconds or even minutes before it comes back again.

There's a plug which fits into the instrument cluster - it makes contact to a plastic, printed circuit foil. They can be affected by moisture/dirt, etc. but you might have some luck if you can clean it with switch cleaner or a gentle brushing with a brass brush. There's also a push-in voltage regulator - that can be faulty though an intermittent failure is usually just a poor contact somewhere.

You'll have to remove the instrument binnacle and withdraw the "clocks". It will be a large multiplug on the back. If you can operate a philips screwdriver you can do the job yourself. (ie you won't break anything by doing this).

Punching the dashboard hard seems to have resolved this for the time being.
