...For a format + OS reinstall?
Just out of curiosity :)
I just checked Huddy's price list - £55
Depends whether it's a friend and/or you're prepared to do a deal, of course.
I'll do it for a 4 pack of Tesco Lager and a packet of Skips.

that just made me choke on my drink :D
A boink or two if I couldn't be bothered to do it myself
A girl came in with a laptop today and we found a receipt in her bag:
'XP install: £85.'
Good grief. After determining the fault was actually with the install, we gave her one for free.

Sorry, I'm better than that.
£30-50?
If you're backing up all their stuff, installing/configuring post-install getting it back to how they had it, I'd push it up to £60-80?
last one I done I got a bacon sarnie :)
next time I will ask for a fried egg too
we gave her one for free.
FNAR!!!!!!!

My friend from London phoned me when he was having problems with his PC, he got a technician out who told him £250(!), I asked him to hand the phone to the technician, which he did. So I told him to "**** off!"

I just expect people to replace the Green I have smoked whilst doing it, Therefore if it's stressful & takes ages then they owe me a Lump, If it's a piece of **** & done in a few mo's then just a little Tickle.
For a good mate, i'd do it free, for a 'casual' mate, i'd expect a drink or two, something like that. For a stranger, in a more business like setting, i'd ask for like £50 including doing drivers and updates etc. that people might not be able to do themselves.
Last few times I have done them I have charged 60 quid, certainly not work I would look for though
of course 9 out of 10 times I do it then its for a mate/family and is free
I know its only an hours work but you have to factor in potential follow up hassle
I charge a standard fee of £30 for an O/S wipe and secure delete of the hard disk and then £30 for install of O/S + drivers + service packs
If there are any hard to find drivers, I have a get out clause :)
For a friend, I will do it for a few pints and a curry.

What's your clause?
I only ask as I've quoted people money for doing a task rather than time taken before and then ended up spending about 5 hours looking for something that's just impossible to find and only got the same amount of money.
For a friend, I'd do it for nothing. Why would you charge a friend anything for doing them a favour, does that not undermine the point of them being your friend in the first plce!?

It basically says that I will install all currently available service packs for their o/s and download and install drivers on a best effort basis unless provided with the original install media relevant to the O/S being installed. Meaning if you haven't an up to date driver cd then I will google for 2 minutes, then move on to something else.
In reality though, I have always found a driver apart from a parallel port Dyson scanner, which I suggested to the customer would be cheaper for them to purchase a new USB scanner from me than make me look for the driver. When confronted with hard figures, people become less sentimental about the first ever piece of hardware they bought ;D
