My Car history;

1995 Rover Mini 1275 (1year)
2007 Suzuki Swift 1.5GLX (8months)
2006 Honda CTR Ep3 (6weeks)

Im now in a state thats dangerous, ive no long term plans, so if im not carefully ill end up wasting all my spare money on Stuff.

So i need suggestions for what cars to look at buying next... in about 12months time... to give me a reason to start saving up again. :)

Heres my current short List based on £18k budget;

Honda S2000 GT
Honda Integra Type R DC5 (jap)
Honda Civic Type R FD2 (jap)
Nissan 350Z Coupe
Noble M12
BMW M3
Lotus Elise 111r

From my short list ive today looked at an S2000, not a bad little car, i was shocked to see the car weighed 70kg more than my Ep3, with only a a couple of extra horsies... Practicality wise, i could fit my camera gear in the boot and the seat was comfortable enough for me to be able to sleep in at tracks... i dont do tents. :)

The more i think about the Integra and FD2 the more i dont want the hassle of a Jap Import, I expect when trading it in id get a raw deal, unless i sold privately which im just too lazy to do.

The 350Z looks a nice car, IMO its aged well... Its a heavy car, but, the 3.5V6 gives out 50% extra HP than the EP3, and about 100% more torque, so its hardly a slow old barge.

The Noble is a dream car, which if i could afford to run 2 cars id strongly consider, but the reliability is a concern and the main reason to discount this.

Bmw M3... probably the most sensible car in my list, but from what ive been told the worst to insure, especially given my experiance, by the time im buying it will be 3years NCB(hopefully), 2year experiance and ill be the wrong side of 30, so it might not be too bad.

Finally the Lotus Elise, Lightest and nippiest of the lot, nice and low to the ground, but i dont live in the nicest of areas and i would be a nervous wreck if I left the car parked at my front door... to many chavs and it could become a target.

Any other suggestions?

Oh, come on now. 4.3L of V-6 happiness, electronic 4WD, enough space to carry EVERYTHING you'd ever need (plus if you fold the back seat down you can comfortably sleep 2), and you could drive over anything that got in your way and still get 25+mpg out of it!!

Sorry for the confusion. :o

Been and had a test drive in a S2000GT and 350Z today...

The S2000 seems a little daft, and left me with a few queries to check out online, mainly because i want a hardtop.. the GT comes with a removable hardtop, but, it also has the softtop folded away underneath it, so you are carrying the extra weight, even if you never plan on using it. Im sure it must be possible to strip the softtop hood out, but why leave it in... the softtop+mechanise and motors weighs in at 75-80pound (5.5stone) its like driving about with a child in the boot...

The 350Z was awesome, and really highlighted the lack of torque in my CTR, this is currently the top of my list, the noise from the 3.5v6 was lovely.

I also saw a Merc SLK200k, which im told is a hairdressers car, but, i was shocked i could get such a sexy car for the same budget, ill be going to have a test drive in the Merc tomorrow, on paper it should be too slow and heavy.

After a chat with my dad this afternoon, i can have full access to his workshop, which is ideally fitted and sized for a car build project. For a little over £7k i could buy and build from scratch a road legal Ginetta G20 junior (with the "senior spec" 1.8zetec) this would be a great little project, and something differant and slightly more practical than a Caterham Kit that ive been looking at.

Spend your money on stuff. Stuff is good. It's not wasting.

Stuff isnt good... ive blown loads on Alloys, tyres, brake disks+pads+hoses... none of which i needed, all of which were shiny and i wanted...

If i could decide what i wanted in the future it would stop me wasting it all.

OK, here's a suggestion. A house! Save up the deposit, get yourself a place where you can keep LOADS of stuff ;D

Why would i want a house... houses=bills... bills=no toys.

But as its you, you have reminded me of 1 thing ive never replaced... My crappy Breitling... I suppose i could save up for that Panerai Luminor GMT that i wanted.

Gotta agree with Feek - house or stuff - or get a non-instant-access account and put the money in there so you're not so tempted to spend it.

No offence intended but if I'm reading your post right, you've only had your current car six weeks. Besides the reason stated in the OP is there a reason you're looking for (and test driving) other cars so soon?

I'm an absolute disaster area for spending on stuff, and I got into a hell of a pile of debt as a result. Maybe the more sensible option would be to try to kick the spending habits. Do as I say, not as I do, I know. :)

Cheers for the advice Mark... I love my CTR

The main reason for looking at other cars now, is thats, cars are my main hobby atm, so thats where i want to spend my money, a year or 2 ago id have been looking at high-end camera gear, and before that NitroRC toys... if i havent got a pre-defined goal i know i wont be able to save up, ive got access to a couple of ISAs and high interest savings accounts which will be used to save up.
But without a goal i wont have the motivation to start and keep saving...

As for the Mini, i bought it March 07, passed my test 14th Jan 08, and bought the Swift a week later, so only actually drove solo in it for about 10days.

Looking at those old photo really makes me want another, great fun little car... stick a vtec lump in the front and it would be huge fun. :p

Aww it's lovely :)

You're like me with cars, although I was generally improving Minis for a number of years, then started on other things. Happy with the MR2 now although if I had limitless cash I would probably change my car weekly. I know you were on about changing the Swift about 5 months ago when we saw you, so you wouldn't have had it that long by then!

Out of that list I'd go for the 350Z, but if I was in your position, I'd be saving for a house or buying other things ;)

Ooh, I remember those. My neighbour had one very similar.

As for setting goals, does the goal have to be buying something? How about just setting a budget for your next car and then saving to that budget. You can then do the searching for what's on the market for that money at the time you're ready to buy - or put that money aside because you're still happy with what you have and set a higher goal.

Aye, i did go off the Swift a bit rapily, im hoping the Civic has more staying power... bouncing off the limiter in 3rd gear up motorway sliproads still puts a huge smile on my face so i doubt it will happen too soon.

Aye, aiming to have £12k in the bank is 1 option, but if ive not got a definately goal i know it wont work. Ive no self-control, within the next 12months a new Macpro will be released and if ive got the cash in the bank ill buy one (exact thing has happened twice before), if i can see a picture of a 350z for instance and say to myself, which would i prefer that 350z before Xmas 2009 or a shiny new computer now... i should be able to restrain myself.

The Noble M12 is the "best" car there but it is also the absolute worst car to run by a country mile. The engine is horrendously unreliable and the interior is gash. One of my mates also has a pic of one unable to turn out of a sidestreet because they are so low it couldn't get over the camber of the road!
